4 out of 5 stars Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

3 out of 5 stars Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

Enjoy

4 out of 5 stars The Importance of Beng Ernest.......2007-05-13

Graham Nash sings and writes songs on this CD with heartfelt conviction. However, it's hard not to compare this CD with his first, "Songs for Beginners," a much more interesting and melodic CD. The songs on "Wild Tales" seem too simiple, little ditties that really never move you, except for the song that continues from his first CD, "Another Sleep Song," with Joni Mitchell adding airy resonance to this beautiful love song.
Unfortunately, the songs on "Wild Tales" have little to capture your repeated listening after one or two times. Stick with Graham's first is my advice.

5 out of 5 stars Profound!.......2006-04-21

Graham Nash has been one of the most profound artists to date. My daughter was born when this was released in 1973, and my Life at the time was troubling to say the least. "Wild Tales' was my saving grace! You are 'transported' into the story of the songs, and all else 'falls away'. 'Wild Tales' is an absolute MUST in anyones collection! Timeless!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Gem and a Classic.......2005-10-07

This is Graham Nash at his best. He reveals a side of his songwriting not seen anywhere else. It's a little bit raw and edgy and thoughtful and most heartfelt. Yes, it's set squarely in the revolution of the late 60s and early 70s, yet it still carries appeal and charm and inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Day it came out.......2005-09-19

I bought this when it originally came out in 1973. My 23-year old brother had died in a car accident 6 months earlier so I was "all tore up". This album and Songs for Beginners soothed my aching soul for many years. I don't know how these songs stand up in the historical perspective of CSN. Some of the songs do sound a little dated now. I know every song on these two albums by heart because I sang and played along for years and lived them. Friends were going to prison for 20 years for a joint in Texas and Graham was just singing and writing about what was going on around us. What a back up band he had back then. David Lindley was superb. I liked Graham so much I named my white German shepherd,"Nash" after him. He was my best friend for ten years. We named the cat, "Crosby". I never missed these guys in concert with and without Stills and Young. Wild Tales is a little more up-tempo than "Songs for Beginners." It's all a matter of taste. If you like CSN then you'll like these first two solo projects by Nash

3 out of 5 stars For Extreme Graham Nash Fans Only.......2005-04-04

As a response to all the rave reviews, I found Wild Tales okay and pleasant, but not essential. If you have to buy one Graham Nash album, stick with Songs for Beginners which has at least 4 classic songs.
Because of similar musicians, Wild Tales is like Neil Young's Harvest without Neil's songwriting, guitar or voice. It is also 31 minutes long. With filler, you end up with 15 - 20 minutes of good music.
Atlantic should reissue this combined with the 30 minutes of Songs For Beginners as one CD (as was done with Big Star's first two albums). Then it would be worth it. If you need to have every recording of CSN&Y (together and solo) up to 1973, then buy this, but buy it last.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE!! 38 SPECIAL AT ITS FINEST.......2007-07-11

Aside from the killer classic "Hold On Loosely", this album kicks some serious butt with "First Time Around", "Hittin and Runnin" and Bring It On. These songs make me smile and tap my feet. Brings back great memories from my wilder days. Needs to played at high volume. Don Barnes' lead vocals give me chills.

5 out of 5 stars ROCK YOU UNDER THE TABLE!.......2006-01-19

FIVE STARS AFTER DRINKING WHISKEY!!!!!!!!!!
.38 SPECIAL were the southern rock band that made it into the eighties with numerous hit songs. Fronted by Donnie Van Zant, the brother of Skynyrds Ronnie Van Zant, these guys were a hard rockin' tail chasin' bar band, that really cooked up some hot chops. Not as kick ass as Skynyrd, but what kind of a*hole compares. They have a totally different sound. Actually, they are closer to sounding like Journey than they are like Skynyrd, but I love this stuff, when I'm way drunk at the bar. I like to select this album on the Online Jukebox, especially if theres a fine looking floozy bendin' over the pool table. HOLD ON LOOSELY, they always start shakin' it! BACK ALLEY SALLY is a sure fire pleaser too! The title track and pretty much the whole thing is good. ROCK AND ROLL!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix of Southern and Melodic Rock.......2003-11-17

.38 Special's fourth album in 1981 excellently blends southern rock vibe with melodic hard rock. Jim Peterik known as Survivor's keyboardist and songwriter was instrumental in adding melodic hard rock vibe penning HOLD ON LOOSELY which became their first major hit and FANTASY GIRL second single which became a minor hit. Jim Peterik also co-wrote HITTIN' AND RUNNIN' and WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYS, the title track. HOLD ON LOOSELY is one of my all time favorite songs among the excellent songs Jim have created so far including Survivor. At the latter part Lynard influenced nice southern rock can be tasted. Essential for early 80s pop rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars .38 Special's Second Great One In A Row.......2002-09-23

WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS was .38 Special's second great album in a row. The first two cuts- "Hold On Loosely" and "First Time Around", as well as "Hittin' And Runnin'"- are downright cautionary in their lyrical content; the title track is pure boogie heaven; and "Fantasy Girl" is simple Southern pop-rock. A few songs are filler, but the great ones make this album worthy of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars .38 before they sold out.......2000-09-08

This CD has the classic .38 Special sound before they went top 40. Nothing fancy here---just some good old southern rock 'n roll. "Hold on Loosely" is hands down the best song they have ever recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly my favorite original Martina album.......2006-01-06

Only two of the tracks here - the title track and Safe in the arms of love - were included on Martina's Greatest hits collection, but this is a fine collection of songs, so many of which sound like they ought to have been hits.
Martina McBride has recorded many fine albums, but I find this one particularly appealing is the use of traditional instruments (steel guitar, mandolin, fiddle) together will all the instruments normally to be found on nineties pop-country albums. Listening to this, nobody can be in any doubt that Martina is, at heart, a country singer, even if her music has plenty of pop mixed in with it.

The only oldie on here is Two more bottles of wine, a song written and first recorded by Delbert McClinton but which became better known after it was covered by Emmylou Harris. Emmylou's version first appeared on Quarter moon in a ten-cent town and was also a major country hit for her. Because of that, it has appeared on several Emmylou compilations.

All the other songs are originals and the general feel of the album on first listen is upbeat, partly because the songs are so catchy that any sadness is not always obvious from the music. There are sad songs here, notably Phones are ringing all over town and A great disguise. A song that sounds as if it ought to be sad, All the things we've never done, is actually not at all sad, but reflective and looking forward to a bright future.

You've been driving all the time is about female domination, but as is so often the case with such songs, it is immediately followed by a song expressing a woman's need for a man - in this case, Born to give my love to you.

This is a very entertaining album that clearly demonstrates why Martina is one of the finest and most successful pop-country singers around. Now re-issued at a budget price, it's even better value for money.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Pop-country warbler Kenny Rogers's 1999 "comeback" album features a pair of hit singles that returned him to the top of the country charts after a long absence: the lovely, sentimental "Buy Me a Rose" (featuring gorgeous support vocals from Alison Krauss) and "The Greatest," an even more sentimental story-song penned by Don Schlitz, the same celebrated Nashville songwriter who gave Rogers his 1978 smash "The Gambler." Sentimentality is, in fact, the operative word throughout She Rides Wild Horses, particularly on homespun, good-hearted homilies like "Slow Dance More" and the title cut, both of which are delightfully reminiscent of some of Rogers's earliest and best country hits. Of course, this wouldn't be a Kenny Rogers album if it didn't include a couple of smooth, satiny pop-flavored ballads. --Bob Allen

    5 out of 5 stars Kenny's Great Comeback!.......2004-04-27

I've been a Kenny Rogers fan all my 24 years of life on this planet! And this is the greatest comeback any ledgend can have! This album has some of the best music Kenny has recorded! "Buy Me a Rose" is one of the best! The song actually went to #1 on the Country Charts! Kenny's first #1 since "Make No Mistake, She's Mine" back in the late 80's! But I would suggest this album for any true country music fan!

5 out of 5 stars 'The Greatest' country album of the past 10 years.......2003-05-30

I do not consider myself the biggest Kenny Rogers fan. In fact, I have only this and Ten Years Of Gold. This is definetley the greatest country album from the past 10 years.
Slow Dance More- One of the best on the album and should have went farther than it did.
Buy Me a Rose- A number 1 hit. A great love song.
I Will Remember You- I have to say this is better than the original version.
Love Don't Live Here Anymore- The backup singers make a great song an awesome song.
She Rides Wild Horses- 2nd best on album
Kind of Fool Love Makes- Another good love song.
Loving Arms- I enjoyed this song but not the greatest on the album
I Can't Make You Love Me- My least favorite but it's still great
Let It Be Me- excellent ballad
The Greatest- Kenny saved the best for last.
I think Kenny Rogers is the one of the greatest country singers ever and this is one of his best. He had a concert on A&E and I watched it to hear some of his older songs (especially The Coward of the County) and he performed several songs from this album which covinced me to buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Ver good.......2001-07-30

I Like Kenny Rogers because he is a great singer and the music to this cd is very good

The Music of The Wild West was conceived by Producer John McEuen (The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album) as the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed 1993 ten-hour epic television mini-series The Wild West, a film documentary that chronicles the Old West from 1866 to 1896.

    * This album includes rarely found American classics from the late 1800s through the early 1900s, like "Shenandoah," "Barbara Allen," "Home On The Range," and "Yellow Rose Of Texas," all recorded with instruments of the period and including the original lyrics.

    * The artists brought together for this album include some of the best in Country and Cowboy/Western music, including Crystal Gayle, Gary Morris, Michael Martin Murphey, Don Edwards, Marty Stuart, Lyle Lovett, Mary MacGregor, Red Stegall, and Rodney and Beverly Dillard.

    * Any fan of the "Old West" will love this album because it will take you back musically to what the pioneers experienced, capturing an era everyone loves to emulate.

    3 out of 5 stars Not a bad collection.......2007-06-24

This is CD includes songs from three of Elvis' early 1960's movies: Flaming Star, Wild in the Country, and Follow That Dream. No soundtrack album was released for any of the movies, however EPs were released for Flaming Star and Follow That Dream and the song Wild In the Country and Lonely Man were released on singles. Flaming Star and Follow That Dream were top 20 hits in the US, reaching 14 and 15 on the Billboard singles chart, while Wild In The Country peaked at 26 and Lonely Man at 32. This is a pretty good collection and a good example of early 60's pop-rock. Not Elvis' best work from the period, but it is not bad.

Singing rancher Wylie Gustafson is a man to be envied. After all, he's forged a modest but multifaceted career by pulling together the great loves of his life--horsemanship, ranching, and singing. The east Washington rancher has revived plenty of cowboy classics in the past; this time out, he turns his attention to the cowpoke's favored mode of transportation. The title track, "Saddle Broncs and Sagebrush," and slightly too grandiose "Equus Caballus" are poems set to music by Gustafson that salute the enduring nobility of horses. The Montana-born singer-guitarist contributes his own lyrics to the similarly themed "A Good One" and "Manolito." While Hooves of the Horses is dominated by odes to noble steeds, Wylie also rounds up stray but ultimately sympathetic covers from Buddy Holly ("Everyday"), Johnny Cash ("Luther Played the Boogie"), and Tom Russell ("The Sky Above, The Mud Below"), and he works swing and mariachi touches into the lean but tasty arrangements. There's not much new going on here, but sometimes singers, like horses, should be rewarded for their dependability. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Superb combo of country western folk blues and swing.......2004-07-06

Wylie Gustafson's return to rural living in the mid-90s continues to pay dividends in his music. Bred in Montana, Gustafson's act was born of the California scene and tempered by a stretch in Nashville. But years of Eastern Washington ranching and horsemanship has taken his Western-themed music to a more sacred level. He takes a page from the book of Marty Robbins, not only with sweet Western ballads like "Hooves of the Horses" and Mexicali-flavored tunes like "Manolito," but with variety that includes the slinky blue "Leather Lover" and a jazz tinged cover of Bob Nolan's "I Grab My Saddle Horn and Blow."

Covers of Buddy Holly ("Everyday"), Johnny Cash ("Luther Played the Boogie"), and Tom Russell ("The Sky Above, The Mud Below") complement fine originals like the slyly sweet "Mmm... Montana" and the instrumental walking blues, "76." Gustafson crafts songs from cowboy poetry and pulls out his considerable yodeling skill for a cinematic cover of Bob Nolan's "Happy Rovin' Cowboy." The song selections move from country to western to folk to blues to swing with a fluidity that puts this release among the group's best.
