Two things hit you while listening to this two-disc, 35-song collection. First: Reba McEntire, one of country's most twangy, yet recognizable and singular voices, has consistently chosen material that captures life's dramatic moments of consequence, whether it's the decision to leave a romantic coupling, face up to a failed relationship with a parent, or handle the passing of a loved one. And second: in the course of her 23-year career, several of her 33 #1 hits slipped up to the top of the charts virtually unnoticed, and seem hardly memorable today (e.g., "I Know How He Feels"). Yet the best of her work ("Whoever's in New England," "Rumor Has It") remains as emotionally resonant today as when it first appeared. Not only a fine singer, however, McEntire picked up the mantle of woman-to-woman songs first carried by Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Long before Martina McBride began singing songs of social relevance, McEntire had been encouraging and empowering women to change their lives--to look beyond their roles as dutiful wives and mothers ("Is There Life Out There")--if perhaps more subtly than McBride. Reba #1's contains two new tunes: "You're Gonna Be," a mother's loving lessons for her child; and "Love Needs a Holiday," which recounts a married couple's much-needed motel getaway. The latter sounds like it could be the theme song to a spin-off of McEntire's TV sitcom, but the former, much like her most-loved songs, comes packed with wisdom for anyone attempting to navigate the unsettling storms of life. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Reba the Great.......2007-07-05

I've played these CD's to death, but I can never get enough of the magnificent Reba. Sometimes it's a great combination of song and singer; but even on a difficult range-challenging piece like "You Lie", Reba shines. Her abilities are so far beyond the norm---there's just no one like her. If you get a chance to see her on tour, don't miss it, even if you don't think you are a fan of "country" music---Reba's excellence defies categorization.

5 out of 5 stars reba #1.......2007-06-27

This cd is great, it has all of Reba's best songs. Also, I got it a lot quicker then I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Probably Reba's Very Best "Best of" Album To Date........2007-06-17

This was a nice collection of #1 songs which span Reba McEntire's 20 plus years in the country recording industry. Quite a few of them gathered on here are some of her best and more traditional country ballads. While the rest remain to be some of her more recent (like in the last 10 or 12 years or so) counrty pop hits. I personally prefer her more tradionally country ballads which were big hits in the 1980's and early 90's. Though that's not to say that I dislike the more pop-oriented songs on here or anything. They're definitely uplifting and catchy, and Reba's vocals on them are excellent as they almost always are : ) Overall, I highly suggest this thorough double-disc collection for Reba's many die-hard fans out there as it may very well be her single best "Best of" release to date.

4 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2007-03-25

I love this 2 disc set. The only thing it is missing is "Fancy."

5 out of 5 stars Re: Reba #1's.......2007-02-24

This was such a great two disc CD. I loved all the songs on this CD and I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Reba or loves country music. You won't be disappointed, but glad that you got it. Reba is an awesome singer and actress.

    Amazon.com essential recording

As the late 1980s gradually segued into the early 1990s, the choices of material and the production values Reba McEntire brought to her recordings often seemed to be guided as much by right-brained market savvy as by true left-brain inspiration. This "hits" compilation skims the cream of her commercial achievements during this prolific period in her career. Though there are only 10 tracks, these include landmark No. 1 singles like "You Lie," "Fancy," "Is There Life out There," and "Does He Love You," a heartfelt duet with Linda Davis. --Bob Allen

This cd is very good. All Reba songs on this album are not what expected to hear there even better.

4 out of 5 stars Cool tracks, expansive style........2007-03-27

During this time period Reba started to stretch out in new directions and this CD captures it well. The Amazon review makes it seem a bit like Reba was "selling out" by trying new musical styles, but I think she believed in what she was doing, gang, and that's reflected by her choice of a song off this CD--Fancy--to sing at her CMT Giants: REBA special. Sincere smackdowns to Dixie Chicks fan The Expert for using an earlier review of this CD to launch a massive mound of misguided moronities at one of the most decent and gracious performers to ever grace the stage. The Chicks tried the clever liberal marginalization trick right after the 2007 Gore-Chick Grammies when one of them said, "We don't want fans who put us in their CD player along with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith." I have news for the Chicks: no one has ever thought of them as being in the same major league as the other two or ever will. They're being used as part of the ongoing news & entertainment media (NEM) FU to George W. Bush, and when his term ends so will the relentless, sickening free PR campaign the Chicks have enjoyed on MSN.com and a myriad of other media outlets ever since they verbally spit on the president in London. Thus a career ballooned out of proportion by media hot air will come crashing back to earth where it belongs, next to other media-smoke-and-mirrors "stars" like Marilyn Manson and Sinead O'Connor.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..........2007-02-12

The below reviewer who said Reba took a shot at "real musicians" is crazy!
Reba is AMAZING. I don't bash the Dixie Chicks, I own one album- but I would hardly even put them in the same category as reba. She is a legend in an over produced music industry. Listen to her VOICE. She is amazing and sings with passion. How could you even say she belongs in a convienience store behind the counter? She clearly belongs in the music industry. She knows real country and she knows how to rock an audience. Stupid review.

Reba specializes in encouraging ordinary women to face their trials with courage, perseverance, and hope. Consisting mostly of 1990s hits, Volume III deviates from this mission just twice: "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," which is either a slice of Southern gothic or pure kitsch, take your pick; and "She Thinks His Name Is John," a morality tale that mistakes pity for empathy. More typically, Reba shouts, "You go girl!" "Fallin' Out of Love," for example, is about a woman who tells her cheating ex to take a hike when he comes crawling back. "I'm a Survivor" (her sitcom theme and one of the disc's three new recordings) somehow finds common cause between the struggles of a single mom and a preemie. If only there were some real-life scale to it all. Instead, Reba the Diva transforms each song into a grandiose anthem, where even the quietest beginnings end with her revving up for one more key change. --David Cantwell

    4 out of 5 stars Real Reba.......2007-07-18

I see a number of 1 star reviews for Reba's Greatest Hits Vol. III and most all those people seem to have as their gripe that this album isn't "country" enough, like Reba is some kind of a traitor to her "true" music. Well, I think it's up to the artist to decide what music he or she makes, and if Reba decides to alter things a bit, so what? In any event, it's not like this is some kind of radical deviation into a genre completely different from her 80s stuff. This is REba's stuff from the 90s and is still most definitely recognizable as country. Reba's voice is powerful as ever. The songs here center on Reba's vocals and storytelling. The best tunes:

    Heart is a Lonely Hunter
Night the Lights Went out in Georgia
    Take it Back
Why Haven't I Heard from You
    One Honest Heart

4 out of 5 stars I haven't gotten it yet, just read the reviews........2007-02-02

I thought that this was a place to write reviews. Not snipe at other reviewers. If you don't like the album just say so. If you don't like the review, then don't read reviews by that reviewer. You don't have to say that they're malfunctioning or that they are children. No one has the exact same tastes in music. It's important to get both sides.

5 out of 5 stars "YOUNG" IS JUST AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF SAYING "STUPID.".......2006-09-20

My feeling is that most of these....er....uh...."reviews" were written by children MUCH too young to know the superior talent and overall excellence of Empress Reba. I also feel that those same children are better suited to "reviewing" Rap and/or Hip Hop.....as those two genres are NOT music, and these children are NOT adult enough to offer a viable opinion!

    Praise be to Empress Reba!

1 out of 5 stars SORRY SONGS FROM SOMEONE WHO USED TO BE GOOD!!.......2006-01-20

If you want a greatest hits package from Reba McEntire, get her first or her second one. This one contains mostly pop tripe from when she all but abandoned country music to "do what sells". This collection is phony...just like the lady herself.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice Hits.......2005-12-07

Have you noticed that the Reba bashers are in clusters and they post within a day from one another. Look at their review history and you'll see that they (or should I use the singular form) only reviews and trashes Reba's albums. It's just one psychotic voice acting as 10 in vain hope to drag down her ratings. How pitiful.
Back to the album, the songs are here good, but the selection isn't. It's missing many crucial hits since Greatest hits II.
If anyone wants to buy this package, skip it and buy "#1's" that was recently released.

From the second the majestic overture of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 show starts, you know you're in for a treat: In this age of diminished Broadway pits, hearing the 45-piece Orchestra of St. Luke's firing on all cylinders is just thrilling. And that's only the beginning of the fun in this most traditional, most delightful musical, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in June 2005. As Nellie Forbush, Reba McEntire deploys a homespun Southern charm that works marvels against the urbane Emile de Becque, i.e., Brian Stokes Mitchell and his impossibly buttery baritone (check out his rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening"). Of course we shouldn't be surprised, since country star Reba had turned out to be musical-theater star Reba when she replaced Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway. Here, she brightly delivers classics (yes, the show is packed with them) like "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy." And let's not forget Lillias White, chewing the scenery in spectacular fashion as Bloody Mary ("Bali Ha'i," "Happy Talk"--what was that about the show being packed with memorable tunes again?). When the classic American musical is done with such gusto, it's hard not to be won over. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Better than I could have imagined.......2007-06-09

To compare this recording with the original cast recordings of the 1950's is like comparing a jr. high science experiment with a space shuttle launch. Reba McIntyre is wonderful, giving a slight country twang just where and when it was needed (wasn't Nellie from Arkansas, after all?) And what can one say about Mr. Mitchell? That booming baritone filled every nook and cranny of Carnagie Hall, and his clever, halted, French-accented dialogue made his character interpretation enjoyable and realistic. Danieley and White were probably who Rogers and Hammerstein had in mind when they wrote this musical. I loved every song and every word of dialogue.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-05-14

A great recoding. I think Reba makes a much more believable Nellie than Mary did. I keep it in my car, to play frequently.

    5 out of 5 stars Sensational!.......2007-03-25

I approached watching this production on PBS with some trepidation, especially after the R&H organization's last attempt at mounting this piece, that hideous television film version with Glenn Close.

I was especially wary of the casting of a "country" singer to play Nellie. But Reba's warmth and sincerity in the role won me over. This was a splendid choice. Nellie is indeed a "hick" and Reba takes that character clue quite literally. Though the role was originally written for a girl from Texas, Mary Martin, she never took the character too far in that direction, at least from the evidence of the cast recording and the television performances I've seen. But Reba does, quite courageously, never totally shedding her "country" approach to the role, and yet, really singing it! Quite an achievement.

The rest of the casting achieves the same level of perfection. Stokes-Mitchell is not quite an opera singer (the role was written for Ezio Pinza, an operatic bass-baritone) but he manages the part nicely, though his "French" accent is a little inconsistent. Alec Baldwin is totally hilarious as Billis, taking the role in another direction than others have, but it works.

Someone here commented on the casting of black actors in the Polynesian roles, rather than using Asian actors. I would normally agree with the writer, but not in this instance. This show was written in 1949 to directly address the racial inequality between blacks and whites in mid-century America in a way that had never been done before, and in the orginal production, black actors were used to make just that point. This is an attempt to do an "authentic" production, true to the show's original intent. So I respect the producers' decision in this production.

This concert performance is "authentic" in that it uses all of Bennett's original orchestrations, which are a joy to hear, and most if not all of the dialogue, keeping all the songs in their original context. Some songs that never made sense to me in the original cast recording, heard here in context for the first time, suddenly make total sense.

In a way, I prefer the CD of thios performance to the video presentation. One can listen to it and imagine this is NOT a concert performance, but a fully staged one, with a live audience present. It's quite an authentic experience. I did not see the original Broadway production, but I did see the New York City Opera's revival in 1965, and this audio recording helps me relive those memories of a live stage performance.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful!.......2007-02-06

"South Pacific" seems to be one of those "forgotten" classics of the musical theatre. The score is magnificent, and the overture is enough get a dead man's heart beating again.

There's not enough to say about Brian Stokes Mitchell. I first saw him in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and haven't missed his starring roles since them. His version of "This Nearly Was Mine" gave me chills. He is a truly gifted performer.

Reba McIntire is obviously having a great time with the role of Nellie Forbush. She's endearing in the role, and I hope she finds other avenues besides country music to show off her talents.

I liked Alec Baldwin's portrayal of Luther very much. He's not exactly a major musical talent, but he gives it all he's got.

    Very highly recommended!

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD.......2007-07-15

This CD from the country music diva Reba McEntire is an outstanding CD which was the CD that crossed her over to pop music and younger audiences. From the first track "So, So, So Long" to "Everytime You Touch Her" are superb. The best song on the CD is the single and a tear jerker "I Know How He Feels." It is about a man she loves and it tears her up because he is with another woman and Reba loves him so much and knows all of his ways and knows how he feels. "New Fool At An Old Game" is another single and another tear jerker on the CD. She falls in love again and it is new to her but it is the same old thing happening. "Sunday Kind Of Love" is the 3rd single and by the way the music sounds it is in the 40's. The video is set in the 40's also. A man comes home from war to surprise his family. Another good song on the CD is "You're The One I Dream About." It could have been a single real easily. A very slow song about a woman who dreams about another man that she loves when she falls asleep. Every song on this CD is very outstanding. A very good CD for any Reba fan.

5 out of 5 stars The best voice in music........2007-05-05

When I bought this album when it first came out I was a liitle concerned that it might not measure up to Reba's previous works. As a diehard fan of her pure country sound I was'nt sure I would like this record, but after listening to it I realized that Reba's voice is the real instrument. It's not the fiddles, and steel quitars that make her a country star, its the voice. Several reviewer's have stated that this album is what ended Reba's run as CMA female vocalist because it was'nt traditional country but, they fail to mention that K.T. Oslin is the one who broke Reba's streak and no one can say K.T. is traditional country. Lack of awards has nothing to do with the quality of this album. Reba decided to try something new and some people just can't accept change. They don't like that she just want's to "do what sells", but if she does'nt do what sells she'd be out of the business. If you are looking for a great album from the best there is give this a listen, and I mean listen to it with an open ear, otherwise you won't hear the best voice in music.

5 out of 5 stars Not very "country" but still a great album.......2006-12-14

I'm not a country purist so maybe that is why I find this Album to be one of Reba's best. I have loved Reba as an artist since the 80's and I find it extremely gratifying that I've been able to hear her break out into other genre's. She has real talent and this is my favorite album of all time.

      4 out of 5 stars Good cd.......2006-06-16

Nice cd from Reba. Heard her better and MOST CERTANELY heard her worse. The songs are good, but nothing special

1 out of 5 stars I WANT SOME FLUFF PLEASE!!.......2005-09-29

That's what Reba seemed to be proclaiming with her one name self-titled 1988 release that changed her perspective of country music (she left it) and my perspective of her. What in the world does she think she's doing trying to sing "RESPECT"??? This isn't motown or soul train....its country for pete's sake!! Then she totally butchers "Sunday Kind of Love" which is not a good song to begin with. There are better torch songs out there if she wants to do torch..why pick this one??? And Reba is NO torch singer!!! She just doesn't have the voice for it!! "Do Right By Me" sounds like 1960s bubblegum stuff. "So, So Long" is just downright awful. "I'm a New Fool at an Old Game" is o.k. but not enough to give this CD more than one star. "I Know How He Feels" could also have benefited from some good fiddles and steel...it would have made it haunting. "Silly Me" is just silly fluff like most of this CD!

This 10-cut compilation is a worthy sampler of music from Reba McEntire's most vivid and inspired period as a recording artist--a Cliffs Notes-style excursion through the highlights of the singer's 1980s musical output. "How Blue" and "One Promise Too Late" are just two of the six No. 1 Billboard singles included here. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Great straight country.......2007-07-11

In giving this a 5, I am analyzing from the perspective of country music unadorned by any flirtation with pop or rock. This first greatest hits of Reba, covering her stuff up to 1990, is definitely country singing. And singign is what it is. Loud, complicated instrumentaion is not featured. The songs and basic, being based on the singing and lyrics. The songs engage in very straightforward storytelling, accomanied by good rhythm. This stuff started Reba toward superstardom.

4 out of 5 stars Reba McEntire Greatest hits.......2007-05-20

Reba McEntire has really good hits. I like her voice it sounds so cool, I wish I could sound like her. These songs are the best. Amazon.com is a great place to order from.

      4 out of 5 stars A bit dull.......2007-01-26

This album pretty much sums upp Rebas early MCA years, but her hits isn't very appealing, at least to me. its the songs that weren't released as singles that are good! But by all means it's a quite good album still.

5 out of 5 stars A LITTLE MORE COUNTRY AND LESS POP!.......2005-11-07

That's what Reba used to be and it suited me just fine. This is a fine sampling of Reba at her finest. THERE ARE many people who like her this way just fine. She disappointed many, many fans when she quit doing music like this. This is a pleasant reminder when she was a little more country and less pop.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONLY REBA CD THAT I LIKE!!.......2005-11-04

Given the fact that I have only heard two of her CDs, this one and the god-awful "If You See Him" I rate this one 5 stars. If the albums of which these songs came off of are half as good as this CD then Reba was certainly the country queen of the eighties. I enjoy this CD very much.

It's easy to understand why this is one of the most intense, heartfelt albums that Reba McEntire has ever recorded. It came on the heels of a plane crash that killed her road manager and six band members. Though McEntire channels her sense of loss into these songs, her restraint is what makes these performances so memorable. Her voice is powerful and taut with emotion as she grapples with the tangled despair of the title tune and "Is There Life out There"--both back-to-back No. 1 singles. Other highlights include McIntire's fabulous rendition of the 1973 Vicki Lawrence hit, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia." --Bob Allen

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Music.......2006-07-15

This is one of the best CD's Reba has ever recorded in her career. Every song on this CD is a winner. From For My Broken Heart to If I Had Only Known (Which could have been a single.)
Reba really sings her heart out on these songs and you can feel the hurt in her voice also. I lost my father 2 1/2 years ago and this CD really helps me through some rough times.
She does a good rendetion of Vicki Lawrence's The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia. The Video is also wonderful.
Another one of my favorite songs on the CD is The Greatest Man I Never Knew. It is about a girl whose father never had time to listen to his family and I feel he missed out on a lot from his family and daughter. It didn't stop his daughter from loving her father.
This CD is for anyone who has had a sad time in their life. It can really help you through a lot of pain.
      GOOD JOB REBA!!!

If ever there were a quinticential Reba McEntire album, "For My Broken Heart" would be the one! The album is dripping with raw emotion! It produced 2 #1 singles and has sold over 4 millions copies, making it her most successful studio album. It's no wonder really. The album is nothing short of a masterpiece. Few artists have sung about marital infidelity as often as Reba McEntire, and she returns to the theme on her triumphant Read My Mind. No moment better illuminates what a marriage is really made of than the moment when a wife confronts a cheating husband, and McEntire returns to that showdown again and again. On "I Won't Stand in Line," McEntire addresses a husband who is quite nice to her when she's around but equally nice to lots of other women when she's not. On "I Wish That I Could Tell You," McEntire plays the wife in a lifeless marriage who wishes she could make it easy for her husband to go. "Till You Love Me" and the album's title track are both straightforward love songs with juicy melodies, and McEntire opens up her enormous, gospelish voice on them as if she were Nashville's Whitney Houston-- another big-throated singer with an instinct for the emotional jugular. -- Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Reba always country and powerful!.......2007-06-15

It is interesting that people actually say that Reba is at any time not country! She is the voice of country and has always stayed close to her roots. Its how she says her words and the topics that she picks that makes it a country album. Her music is the same as when she started 30 years ago. Times have changed but Reba stays true. Rather if she sings Respect or any other song she has the gift to make it country. This album is considered by many one of the best country albums of all time. Give it a try, all could have been radio singles!

Well, I didn't let the negative reviews stop me from ordering this CD because I really like Reba McEntire. However, I should have paid attention to the negative reviews. Reba may be a good singer and she is. But the material on this CD has got to be some of the worst I have ever heard. The first song nearly made me want to croak and it hardly got better from that point. Even a good singer like Reba cannot make bad material sound good. Reba's voice is good. Her choice of material (especially on this CD) is not! I'm sorry I bought this.

5 out of 5 stars The CD that got me into Reba.......2006-01-07

I couldn't disagree more with the negative reviewers here. This is the CD that got me into Reba. Maybe it's not traditional country, but all the songs show off her phenomenal voice, and the backup vocals and musicians are just great.
I am a professional singer and know good singing when I hear it!!
So don't let the nay-sayers discourage you from buying this.

1 out of 5 stars Filler SOngs Just to Make an Album.......2005-10-25

And say that this is one of my least favorite Reba albums. Its too far out there for me that I can't bear to listen to it except for one or two songs. That's not enough to make me like a record. An album should contain more than just "filler" songs. Most of this album is "filler".
