For several years, singer/songwriter Freddy Powers toured as opening act for Merle Haggard and is presently touring with Haggard as a featured artist. Freddy's name appears on many Merle albums. Freddy co-produced, sang and played guitar on Willie Nelson's platinum album "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and Merle Haggarad's new pop album "Cry Me A River". Freddy has appeared on many Austin City Limits programs, the Tonight Show, Today Show and many appearances on TNN. He also created and co-produced The Rogers and Hammerhead Show, a cable ace award nominee. Freddy has written songs for Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, George Jones, Jannie Fricki, to name a few. He holds many BMI & CMA Awards including CMA's Triple Play Award for writing three #1 songs in one year. Freddy is looking forward to the release of "My Great Escape" as his first solo album. The action in this tale about the 18th century adventurer and (at least in popular lore) seducer is set in Cassanova's native Venice in the mid-1700s, so it makes sense that the soundtrack would be loaded with Baroque pieces. The Venice-based Tomaso Albinoni is featured prominentaly, along with heavyweights such as Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Rameau, and George Frideric Handel, and lesser-known composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Durante, and Alexandre Desplat. Er, actually Desplat is a contemporary French film composer who also released his score for the couldn't-be-more-different Syriana shortly after Casanova came out. Of the two pieces he penned here, "A Venetian Virgin" is in pure Baroque style, while "Inquisitor Pucci" betrays a more modern film-music vibe. Meanwhile, orchestrator Sonny Kompanek rearranged a couple of the tracks and authored the tense "The Plume's Nom Is Casanova," which doesn't sound embarrassing sandwiched between pieces by Albinoni and Handel. Overall, it would have been nice to get longer excerpts from the pieces--many feel chopped into too-small fragments--but the music's innate grace and elegance can't be beat for a period film. Or for any film, really: Vivaldi's Concerto in C Major ("The Doge's Decree") will be familiar to buffs, who will remember it featuring prominently in the Dustin Hoffman-¬Meryl Streep showdown Kramer vs. Kramer back in 1979. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sheer Beauty for the Ears.......2006-07-25

For those that purchased this CD, I need not get into how masterfully infectious the movie was. After the first viewing, I found it charming, but after the second, I was hooked by the witty, clever story holding fun twists all along the way. So while I could go on and on about the movie and all of its wonderful aspects, the score was simply priceless. Apt in every scene, and all done with incredible baroque music that I had never had the opportunity of hearing before the film.

The disc walks you through the movie with no changes that I could tell from the original score. The only omission I found was that the song dubbed "Casanova's Theme" is played in much greater length in the closing credits, and that didn't seem to make it to the CD. Not a terrible loss.

Authenticity can sound great as well!.......2006-07-11

As an avid baroque music listener and performer, I can attest to the delightfully pleasing performances on the soundtrack as well as the painstakingly accurate performance practices utilized in the recording of this soundtrack.

The producers of this film fortunately went to the trouble of hiring some of the top period performance musician-specialists in the country (perhaps in the entire world) to record the soundtrack to Casanova. I know, because several of them were faculty members of the Oberlin Conservatory Baroque Performance Institute who went AWOL to Hollywood in June 2005 for the recording sessions. We all forgave them, and were actually quite excited that period music performance was having its day on the silver screen.

Do not miss this exquisite potpourri of wonderful baroque composers' works performed as closely as humanly possible to the way that they heard their works during their lifetimes! The film may not have been intended to be historically accurate (part of the fun), but the music certainly ended up that way. Not only that, but it sounds heavenly (unlike Casanova's antics) and up-to-date, not musty and old as if it were sealed in a museum case.

Lots of interesting baroque music unknown to me and
put together in dramatic sequences that add zest and
class to the listening experience. Also wonderful to
play in auto while driving thru boring country or in
slow moving traffic!
This CD will get a lot of play from me.

Wonderful relaxing music........2006-02-25

Saw the movie and had to have the soundtrack. Great music to relax by. When you need to get away from the cares of the day the classics can't be beat. The producers of this movie certainly chose wonderful music to accompany it.

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Enormously Disappointing.......2004-10-01

As a big Bernstein fan, I was looking forward to this comp. But I couldn't even make it through one listen. I found it insipid, saccharine. The main idea behind this comp seems to be to stuff every recognizable theme Bernstein ever wrote into one set while cutting out all other sections including any variations or development. They've cut the meat out of the music and left only the fat. The playing is stiff, the tempos are rushed, the arrangements are terrible. Don't waste your time.

Fabulous recording. Puts you right in the saddle with the Duke, The Magnificent Seven or Charlton Heston's sandals! Power, scope, range, variety and total magnificence - this has it all. By far the best movie sound-track recording of all!

Sit Up and Listen.......2001-06-28

You pop this CD in to your player and the glorios Magnificent Seven theme knocks you off your feet. I'd forgotten how good it was, an icon of testerone flowing unchecked. Then there is the touching innocent To Kill a Mockingbird theme. Starting with a simple music box theme, the music builds to a dramatic climax, as if all the emotion suddenly exploded. The Great Escape track is, I think, one of the very best march compositions of all time. With the tuba providing the baseline with its own melody, then the light brass, perky and upbeat, providing the second melody, this theme instantly evokes both the fatigue and robotic obedience required of prisoners and the brassy indomitable spirit characteristic of the RAF flyers. If you listen carefully you hear the deeper brass (French Horns) take up the theme and give it a more somber character, as yet another melody is sustained in the background. The Ten Commandments stands alone as a wonderful heroic piece. Buy the CD for any one track and you will be pleasantly surprised by the remainder.

The Best Bernstein Sampler Yet!.......2000-05-21

Varese Sarabande has cheery picked from some of the finest (and most famous) film scores ever composed (and some of the best performances thereof yet recorded) in the second half of the last century. There are samples from sixteen film scores by Mr. Bernstein presented here (and since this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for this prolific, spectacularly-talented composer, let's hope there will be many more Bernstein compositions to come!). It's beyond great to have all 16 film scores represented on one CD, even though most/all of these tracks are available off other CDs (CD-burner freaks, you've been left at the gate, or, rather, the CD-R/W drive on this one!). It does get a bit confusing trying to figure out all the source material (there's Bernstein right off the film sound track, Bernstein conducting the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Bernstein conducting the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Mr. Joel McNeely conducting the Royal Scottish Orchestra, McNeely conducting Seattle Symphony orchestra, Mr. Cliff Eidelman conducting the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and so it goes). But quit making your brain ache; just spin up this CD and let your ears do their thing. And what a wonderful thing those ears will do. Mr. Bernstein, a master of tonality (like Erich Wolfgang Korngold before him), is probably best enjoyed in spurts or in selective film-score "cues"--mainly his opening/closing credit cues, since his scores tend to sag and become less dramatic in between. This CD focuses on the composer's strengths: mostly those opening/closing credit cues you can't help hearing in your mind over and over again. Although the performances are (as previously noted) from many sources, I can't find fault with a single one. The same goes with the recording/mastering/re-mastering. All first rate. One question remains: why are you still reading this write up when you could be buying the CD to empower your ears!

Freddy's Voice Remains Great as Ever!!.......2005-02-25

We own several of Freddy's CD's. "THE COUNTRY JAZZ SINGER","SILVER EAGLE" and "THE HOTTEST THING IN TOWN" Freddy always amazes me that his lyrical gifts seem to be endless! This CD is another treasure and there are also a couple of songs with Merle. It is fun to hear their lives come out in their lyrics. Sounds like they have too much fun together! Also the song "On The Road To My Heart" I heard through the Freddy Powers fan club email group, is for his wife... must be nice!! Anyway, this is a sure ear pleaser. My eight year old daughter even enjoys it and chooses musicians like Freddy over some of the more modern swing or country musicians. This makes the whole family happy! Buy "My Great Escape" you will be happy you did!

The Best Country Jazz Singer Anywhere!.......2005-02-24

This is Freddy Powers's finest recording yet! Every cut on this record is "GOLD!" I have a hard time picking my favorite. The title track, My Greaat Escape, written by "Big and Rich" is a beautiful master piece!.....Three songs with Merle Haggard, (Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, being my favorite), and many other great cuts! Two-Timing-Woman, Daytime Nighttime Blues, Havin' a Good Time With You, Like a Movie Star.....Freddy's unique brand of Country, Jazz and Swing, with a Texas edge is one everyone will enjoy! Wow ! Gotta be just simply the best ! Freddy has & will always be tops. His lastest "My Great Escape" has surpassed them all. I enjoy the duets with Merle. The title song, My Great Escape, written by Big & Rich is a special favorite of mine. Can't say enough about this MUST HAVE addition to your collection.
