Martina McBride has long been a champion of music as social consciousness, particularly for abused women ("Independence Day") and children. On Waking Up Laughing, her ninth album and the follow-up to Timeless, her platinum-selling album of country classics, she advances the theme while expanding it. While two songs explore the issue of unwed mothers (particularly the exquisite "Love Land," which closes the album), and another, "Beautiful Again," touches on child sexual abuse, her overall repertoire embraces the wholeness of family, and of standing strong together in the face of adversity and defeat. Musically, McBride has always proved to be an elegant thorn--her song selection is often inspired (and here, she co-wrote three tunes, including the skyscraping single "Anyway"), but she has tended to use her huge, ride-the-wave soprano full-tilt, without employing the subtle shadings that would make her even more emotionally resonant. On Waking Up Laughing she seems to have worked on the problem, yet in her second foray as solo producer, she still tends to gild the lily instrumentally--inflating string bridges between choruses, for example, or loading the opening country-pop track, "If I Had Your Name," with a Southern-rock guitar break, a listen-to-me fiddle showcase, a Celtic guitar intro, and a close that brings to mind George Harrison's sitar in play-it-backward mode. That said, she makes fine use of what sounds like a black female choir on the uplifting "For These Times," and wisely keeps the haunting break-up ballad "Tryin' to Find a Reason" (with Keith Urban's harmony vocals and guitar solo) lean and affecting. As McBride works to refine her pastiche of creativity, commerciality, and social awareness, she slyly takes more chances than one might think, all the while rallying old fans and making new ones. --Alanna NashAlbum Description
After 16 million in sales and 22 top 10 singles, some artists might be afraid to tinker with success and tempt fate. But not Martina McBride. Following up on her platinum-selling Timeless album, a poignant collection of country classics representing her first effort as solo producer, she's at the production helm again for her ninth studio release, Waking Up Laughing. Since her debut in 1992, McBride has maintained a consistent presence on the country charts, including six number one singles, and has also enjoyed crossover success in the pop and adult contemporary genres. Always striving for new artistic heights, McBride is breaking new ground by serving as producer, writer and artist for her latest album, which includes three songs she co-wrote with the Warren Brothers and other top songwriters.Customer Reviews:

Brilliant CD !!.......2007-06-23
Here in NZ we don't have country radio stations so we don't get to hear new tracks and artists unless we do so online (which I do). In some ways this is great because we don't hear songs thrashed until all the meaning and life have been wrung out of them.
Having said all that, Waking up crying is a great CD. I played it through 4 times without skipping through any tracks. I loved every track. Although 1 or 2 were a bit "poppy" it just shows Martina's versatility. My all time favourites are I'll still be me, Love land, House of a thousand dreams and of course the track Anyway which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
5++ for this album which will not disappoint new and old fans

Solid McBride Release.......2007-06-21
She ranges from sentimental love songs to heartbreak songs to survivor songs, and maintains her soulful, powerful voice on everyone of them.
"Anyway," "Tryin'To Find A Reason," "Cry Cry," and "House of a Thousand Dreams" should not disappoint too many, if any, of her fans.

In the abstract, there are two Martina McBrides heard in this ample collection, which features 14 hits from the Kansas-born singer's studio albums, along with four inspired new cuts. At one extreme there's the demure cover-girl-pretty warbler who serves up fervent and endearing love pledges like "Wild Angels," "Safe in the Arms of Love," and "I Love You." Then there's the mature, poised, socially conscious mother of two who grapples with darker topics like poverty and inequality ("Love's the Only House") and child and spousal abuse (the wrathful "Independence Day" and the ineffably sad "Concrete Angel"). There are certainly impressive samples of both Martinas on this anthology. On other cuts--like the bluesy, naughty new track "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues" and the angry "Life #9"--the forces of light and darkness, anger and felicity, commingle in a manner that's no less intriguing and provocative. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:
Shows why Martina is a Star.......2007-07-09
My Baby Loves Me - great intro tune, a salute to unconditional love
Life #9 - another high energy hit. Martina tells roaming man he is down to his last chance
Independence Day - stirring song about tragic effects of domestic violence
Safe in the Arms of Love
Wild Angels
Happy Girl - very fun and energetic song
Whatever You Say
Love's the Only House - social commentary by Martina
When God Fearing Women Get the Blues - a funny and energetic song about a straight-laced woman who just cuts loose one day
With 19 songs, most of them winners, this CD is a great buy for the fan and an excellent intro to Martina and modern female country for others.
Martina's greatest hits.......2007-05-20
I recently got a hold of Martina's greatest hits from a several years ago. I almost forgot just how great of a singer she is compared to a lot of female artists nowadays (regardless of genre). I do though wish that "The Time has Come" from Martina's first album was on the album. Other than missing that particular song, I enjoyed listening to Martina's greatest hits especially "Independence Day" which for some ODD reason has kept Martina off some country radio's playlists to this very day. I guess the truth hurts. I am still emotionally moved by the lyrics. I don't know why since I have never been the victim of domestic abuse but the song resonates with me. I also still love "My Baby Loves Me" and "Safe in the Arms of Love" and "Wild Angels". As sappy as "Valentine" is, I actually like the song. Big guilty pleasure with me. A lot of the songs on the cd are new to me. I particularly like "Wrong Again". Great melodies.
What I like about Martina's music is that it is never obnoxiously twangy which is why I hate most country music. Martina really has great taste in picking which songs she will put on her albums. The heartfelt lyrics, catchy melodies, and her powerhouse vocals are an excellent combination.

The World of McBride - Magnificent.......2007-04-20
You know, Greatest Hits compilations are tricky things, because, as you may have personally experienced, they can sometimes be surprisingly bland and weak (Shania Twain's compilation for instance - why exactly was that album so boring), or unexpected gifts (like both of Tim McGraw's Hits Compilations - who knew he had such quality work under his belt?).
Martina's Greatest Hits CD falls firmly into the category of `classic'. I mean, theres just no other way to describe it. Granted, that rare `Hope Floats' track isn't there (and what a track that was!) but every other one of her amazing hits is here, alongwith 4 quality new tracks (though they DO pale in the face of her more critically successful work). The best songs here are of course "I Love You" and the incomparable "Independence Day".
The only `commercial' track here is "Valentine" with Jim Brickman (never can stand that song for some reason - too sappy), but this is all made up for by the other great torch songs Martina has sung.
Martina is more of a country vocalist than a country singer, which is why I guess the album is heavier on the slower songs. But not to worry, every song is a gem, and I whole-heartedly recommend this album to everyone, even if you're NOT a country fan.
This is the perfect road trip album. One of the few CDs you can play all the way through. I have it on my Itunes and its about the second or third album I've ever played all the way through without skipping tracks. Commendable!

Country music's infatuation with the puka-shell rock of Jimmy Buffett has been one of the genre's less fortunate indulgences. Most of Nashville's hat acts do little more than dip their toe in the water and do nothing to build upon Buffett's signature sounds. That's why License to Chill, which features a plethora of Music City guests (Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Clint Black, George Strait, Martina McBride, Toby Keith) along with Bill Withers and Nanci Griffith, seems like a bad idea. But the album, on which the Key West hedonist performs his favorite "bar gig" songs, as he calls them, often delights. As someone who began his songwriting career in Nashville (and who's also recorded more than half his albums there), Buffett isn't just slumming, as his choice of covers (from such writers as Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Hank Williams, and Jerry Garcia) proves. What could have been little more than a lark, then, ends up being a showcase for Buffett the serious songwriter and song finder. Although he does indulge in the occasional beach-minded thong-writing, Chill is a surprisingly satisfying album aimed less at the Parrothead crowd and more toward an audience who remembers the Buffett of 30 years ago, a man who struggled to make his mark among Nashville's most revered tunesmiths. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
Buffett grabbed me into his crazy little world with this one .......2007-07-01
A rousing cover of Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin' " (recorded with several big-named country artists) was the perfect ditty to lead off this album, but the song's carefree sound and attitude don't fully define "License to Chill." Many of these tunes take the time to reflect on life, aging, love and heartbreak. The title track, however, like the opening song, has all the reflection of a Budweiser commercial. Still, that's OK. Buffett seemed to be making some statements in creating this CD: First off, he's earned his right to chill royally, and second, he wanted to get back to his apparent country roots, which he certainly accomplished in spades.
The more mesmerizing and harmonic tunes from this CD are the slower-paced ones such as "Boats to Build" (with Alan Jackson), "Coast of Carolina," "Anything Anytime Anywhere," "Trip Around the Sun" (with Martina McBride), "Coastal Confessions" and "Sea of Heartbreak" (with George Strait), all beautiful compositions that shocked me into truly respecting Buffett's outlook and musical talent. My personal favorite from this plethora of amazing tunes is "Window on the World," a mid-tempo, down-home country song if there ever was one. On it, Buffett's voice is severely baritone (purposely hungover-sounding?), while his lyrics are candid, philosophical and resigned, but also convey a hint of mischievousness and sparkle for life. A great slide guitar and solid acoustic guitar work also enhance this most tuneful of tunes.
There's some cool, more rugged tracks as well. The confident and self-knowing "Piece of Work" (with Toby Keith), the humorous and true-to-life "Simply Complicated," and "Conky Tonkin" (with Clint Black) would each satisfy the insatiable restlessness of any true country fan. Meanwhile, bona fide Buffett fans will take heart with the album's last two songs, "Scarlet Begonias" and "Back to the Island," which are full of enough lighthearted lyrics and islandlike sounds to make one realize JB would never totally abandon the seaside fluff he's so aptly made a great living at. From slow-dancing prom songs to organic country to a rollicking good time, "License to Chill" is a fantastic piece of work from top to bottom, by a longtime musical artist who managed to erase my condescending scorn and attain my utmost respect with one fell swoop of a CD. In the end, "License to Chill" also accomplishes what it perhaps set out to do: help others enjoy life, despite its bothersome inadequacies and travails.

Martina McBride is something of a marvel. Throughout her career she has managed to walk a tightrope between Nash-Vegas commercial concerns and the high art of well-crafted songwriting and serious singing that makes up modern country at its best. Her hits in the Nineties ("Wild Angels," Independence Day," "Life #9," "Safe in the Arms of Love") were beacons of light in a darkness of clichéd and over-produced cowboy-disco tunes. Martina continues her tradition of tasteful tune picking and powerful but never over-the-top vocals. "This One's for the Girls" mines much missed Mary Chapin Carpenter territory, while tunes like "In My Daughter's Eyes" and "So Magical" (with its scenes of rural bliss) stay safely this side of excessive sentimentality thanks to McBride's considered performances. Even pop tunes like "When You Love Me" and "Learning to Fall" are kept country with an emphasis on guitars, fiddles, and steels over syrupy synthesizers. Throughout, producers Paul Worley and McBride herself give Nashville lessons on how to make a record that is shiny but never slick. Finally, her live performance of "Over the Rainbow" is a lesson on delivering a show-stopping vocal with minimal melisma and maximum soul. --Michael RossCustomer Reviews:

In paying tribute to her roots, Martina McBride doesn't merely cover a selection of classic country favorites, she conjures an entire era. You'd swear that was Floyd Cramer playing piano on the album-opening "You Win Again," and Chet Atkins picking guitar on the following "I'll Be There." The steel guitar featured so prominently throughout Timeless recalls a time when country sounded distinctly--and proudly--different from rock, while the background chorale on "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Once a Day," as well as the soaring strings on "Rose Garden," remind one of the "countrypolitan" crossover sound. Except for a delicate rendering of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," McBride's versions don't really add anything to the originals, because these songs weren't missing anything. But she makes "I Don't Hurt Anymore" sound as fresh and pure as it did when Hank Snow recorded it more than a half-century ago, while her rendition of "Till I Can Make It on My Own" has all the brittle conviction that Tammy Wynette invested in it. --Don McLeese

Martina McBride sings country.......2007-03-09
Perfectly Pieced.......2007-01-12
Martina's voice may have a bit of twang at points it really is very charismatic and beautiful. This is interesting in some ways. In songs like "Heartaches By The Number" and "I Can't Stop Loving You" she hits those songs ,with a high pitch attractiveness that draws the listener to hear. For songs(originally Don Gibson & Kris Kristofferson)with depressing themes that's 100% feat.
"Once A Day" has a sadness to it,and yet it tickles my funny bone ,too.
How happy is a person who is now only sad"once a day all day long",and "once a night from dusk to dawn."? She sings it in a meaningful way which I love.
"You Ain't Woman Enough" and"Thanks A Lot " are bold and sassy.Again the vocals make them easy to visualize."Thanks A Lot"captures hurt and sadness in a bold, angry way. "You Ain't Woman Enough" is a bold confrontational song about a hopeful to be a mistress at the least, and an angry ,loving wife .
The songs chosen were aces, and Martina McBride did just that in her classic country tribute.

Nashville hacks singing for faux-patriotism.......2005-12-23
What do these artists have in common? Cutting edge musical geniuses? Gifted songwriters able to speak to a wide range of audiences? Innovators in their genre?
Err, no.
Actually what they all have in common is that they all appear on this package, created to commercially exploit the war on terrorism, one which contains songs like Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly, This Ain't No Rag, It's A Flag, and Back Where I Come From. In other words, maudlin, xenophobic, cliche filled, black/white dichotomous sentiments, and the lack of any attempt at rational or questioning political analysis, all set to fiddles and pedal steel guitars, and to be marketed and sold at Wal-Mart. I should add that I am not against patriotism, when it is intelligent and well informed; this, however, is dumb, reactionary faux-patriotism. Nothing is more so than the song God Bless the USA. As an American who loves his country, I can say that this song, with its syrupy sound and its naive lyrics, does not speak for me.
I listened to a bit of this schlock on a plane ride a while back just to see how much of it I could take. The answer was - not very much. What little I could take made me want to drink, and heavily.
Some of these performers, specifically Brooks and Dunn, Randy Travis, Charlie Daniels, and perhaps Kenny Chesney and even (I hate to admit) Toby Keith are actually fairly talented; others, like former lounge singer Lee Greenwood, Alabama, Montgomery Gentry, etc, are 3rd rate musical hacks.
Ultimately, listening to this nonsense, I'm reminded that some of the greats of the genre, like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, George Jones, and Willie Nelson were neither knee-jerk
reactionaries nor apologists for a ruling political party. Then again, Dusty Drake, Montgomery Gentry, and Blackhawk are no Johnny Cashes. Just Nashville hacks, soon to be forgotten.
Great CD.......2005-08-21
NOTE: Most of the bad reviews below have to more with politics than music. These folks probably have never listened to all the songs let alone actually buying the CD.
To to a kids review.......2005-07-31
I'll tell you I'm a kid (age 16) and some don't want to use their real name because this is the internet, not real life. If you knew my name or the original reviewer's real name, would that make any difference? Anywa, you say since a reviewer doesn't use their real name, they are a terrorist? Very intelligent.
"If your home is destroyed by someone, you are not going to look for the people or person involved. No you are going to the proper authorities and they will handle it.
That is what happened here. We were attacked and the proper authorities are handling the situation."
We were not attacked by Iraq and the proper authorities are not handling the situation. We attacked Afghanistan, but Iraq has nothing to do with this.
"Look I am all for freedom for imagrant's but they took it to far with the attacks. Living in our country, working here, becoming friendly with the neighborhoods and gaining the trust of everyone around just to destroy part of the country you love (so you say) is just something that cannot be tolerated. At least we had the guts to tell them we were coming. You should be thankful that you have a country who is willing to protect you and your family. "
So you think it's immigrants fault that we were attacked? And you call yourself an American? You should be blind to race and country of origin, we are all Americans here. The country of Afghanistan attacked us and we went after them, that has nothing to do with immigrants.
"Right after 9/11 happened EVERYONE was togther as a whole to make sure the people behind this act of cowardly violence (kind of like the way you wrote your rewiew) and any kind of terroristic threats on U.S.A. would never happen again. But I guess for some of you people that was just like hopping on the band wagon for a short period of time."
It was not cowardly violence. In a war you strive to kill the most enemies you can. I would only Hope the US would strive to kill or detain as many terrorists as they can just as their target was civilians. Whatever you say, suicide bombings are not cowardly, they are actually pretty effective. Find me a US citizen willing to fly a plane into a building full of terrorists to kill our enemies.
"It's not a matter of what song's are good to listen to and what songs aren't. It's about a bunch of people who support the country (they love) so they can feel safe to go shopping, go to work or just go for a walk and not have to worry about some idiot flying a couple of planes into some building's or into the ground and never see their loved ones or the light of day ever again."
Ah, back to the actual review of the CD, which you have made a minor detail. I don't care about what these singers support, I care about their music. I care about what politicians support, and how singers sing. I happen to like many of the songs on the CD, but I didn't buy it because I own many of the songs already.
"How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation. I feel sorry for the people in your life."
Well more people are in car crashes every year than were in the WTC during 9/11, so you should be pushing for safety in cars. How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation? Of course you are a very effective tool of the terrorists, the typical American scared out of his pants when a building goes down, scared to shop, when you are in more danger driving your car. We have killed over 10 times the ammount of CIVILIANS in Iraq (nothing to do with 9/11) than the 9/11 attacks killed. Of course I'm sure they aren't people to you.
But back to the CD, I am really thinking about buying it mainly just for "Hey Mr. President" and I'm dissapointed they didn't put it on another CD, I love the song and the Warren Brothers.
Most of the songs are really great, although "God Bless The USA" was overplayed and I used to love it, but now I'm just tired of it. All of these songs are great, although some don't even seem to be patriotic. But that doesn't matter to me, because great music is great music, which is worth buying.

When DGG announced the CD version, I was ever hopeful those unreleased items would finally see the light of day. Sadly, that's not the case. What we have left is a mixed bag. Arroyo expressive but unsteady, a young Domingo with Caballe sounding undermiked, Nilsson ripping the roof off, Price skipping the recitative and not in best voice, Tucker and Merrill trying to outshout each other, Resnik hamming it up, Zylis-Gara and Corelli's only evidence of Otello on record with the fans ruining the beautiful orchestral ending of the duet. Despite all my negatives, this CD is evidence of a very special evening in New York when the operatic lights shone a lot brighter than they do now, the likes of which will never be seen or heard again. It would get five stars if the missing items had been included.

Amazing Grace, a compilation of well-known gospel standards, brings together some of country music's brightest stars. From Lari White's understated delivery of the title track to Martina McBride's mandolin led version of "How Great Thou Art" to the Charlie Daniels Band's soulful rendering of "Kneel at the Cross," Amazing Grace is a real treat for fans of both secular country music and white Southern gospel. Accompanied by a full band including a bittersweet fiddle and a steel guitar, Paul Overstreet kicks up the tempo with "A Mansion Over the Hilltop," while Shenandoah's "Beulah Land" recalls both Glen Campbell's take on high-lonesome balladry as well as the tight harmonies of Alabama. And sung by the sweetest voices of the genre, two of the loveliest tracks on the record are born of the bluegrass gospel tradition: "I'd Rather Have Jesus" and "Precious Memories," performed by Alison Krauss and the Cox Family and Emmylou Harris, respectively. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
From composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Independence Day) comes the sweeping original score to the motion picture Amazing Grace. Recorded in London with some of the world's top musicians, Arnold brings to life the intense journey of Williams Wilberforce and his quest to abolish the British Slave Trade in the UK during the 1700s. Amazing Grace is the story of the famed hymn, its author John Newton (Albert Finney) and the powerful journey of William Wilberforce (Loan Gruffund- A&E's Horatio Hornblower, Fantastic Four) the man who risked his life and followed his calling to end slavery. Wilberforce's dream finally came true around the time of his death. Britain's slave trade was abolished and slaves were finally free. Experience this music journey as history unfolds and the power of one voice changes the world.Customer Reviews:

Martina McBride's fourth RCA album may not be her best work, but it remains a state-of-the-art '90s pop-country album, filled with insouciantly catchy melodies, flawlessly smooth production, and some genuinely memorable material. The 1997 set is balanced between earnestly romantic tunes like "Here in My Heart," midtempo acoustic songs like "Be That Way," and quasi-feminist numbers like "A Broken Wing," which rivals "Independence Day" for her most focused, soulful performance to date. The album might have benefited from more judicious editing: the cutesy opening snippet, the superficial "Keeping My Distance," and the gooey "Valentine" feel out of place on this mostly well crafted, emotionally sung work. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
My favorite Martina album!.......2007-04-26
Dominant Effort.......2006-12-09
One way to get a "5 Star" rating from me is to make a recording that I think anyone should be able to appreciate. This is such an album. I really believe that if you cannot appreciate this album, you have problems.
Her best...........2005-11-12
I always thought that this album was her best. Each of her albums obviously has some great songs, but for me, Evolution was the album that made me the Martina fan that I am.
It's Martina!.......2005-10-16
Did not like the beginning and end of the CD at all. Must be her kids.
Her last CD was much better.
Possibly The Best.......2005-01-13
This album, in my opinion, is likely her greatest original release. there is not one song that i don't like. and aside from her greatest hits (which i love cuz it has most of my faves), this would be my fave. a very powerful album vocally and lyrically.
i definetly strongly recommend adding this one to your collection.
