The Last Resort, a surprisingly accessible and wide-ranging work by minimal and tech-house phenom Anders Trentemøller, is a winter wonderland of quiet phosphorescence and pristine beats. Not that the Danish composer/producer/remixer is above contrasts, as in "Evil Dub," where he allows down-tuned and distorted guitars to run like the proverbial bull in a china shop of elegant, understated programming. But tracks like "While the Cold Winter Waiting" beg comparison to the frosty, glockenspiel-laced ambience of Iceland's múm, and the closer, "Miss You," is a hypnotic lullaby sure to receive ample acclaim. After all, Trentemøller's music is distinctly his own, and his eerie command of dynamics allows him a broad palette, exemplified by a gripping bit of turntablism that pops up in one of the album's first singles, "Always Something Better." The second disc's bonus material reveals the man the DJ community has long known: the patient architect who unobtrusively builds beats, loops, and motifs into a critical mass of refined minimalism. All this leaves little doubt that The Last Resort will earn Trentemøller converts from downtempo and electronica circles well beyond his established fan base. --Brent Kallmer

The Last Resort is one of those CD's I never get tired of listening to. Beautiful mixing, very subtle textures and soundscapes weave throughout.

My personal favorites are "Moan" and "Take Me Into Your Skin."

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2007-02-01

Some of the other reviewers have suggested that this is forward-looking, boundary-pushing electronic music, others have suggested that this is soul-less and lacking in warmth.

Neither estimation is completely correct (the latter one being straight-up wrong):

It is a good album, and as long as you enjoy and are sufficiently familiar with current electronic music ---particularly of a micro or tech-house variety--- you should be able to find some emotional resonance in this recording.

That having been said, this album sounds to me like an artist expanding on micro/tech house roots, allowing his other interests to seep in. I hear something like a "Villalobos-meets-Badalamenti" aesthetic.

The film-music characteristics are sufficient to appeal to listeners outside of the standard electronic fanbase; I think this is why some reviewers feel it to be great, not realizing that there are other albums of comparable mood and quality.

Don't misunderstand me---it is very good. Well-produced, interesting, warm, and varying in textures. It does not possess the unique greatness of the Badalamenti or Morricone soundtracks it at times evokes. There is an independent voice here, but I do not think it is developed enough at present to be considered truly great.

There is much potential here, and I will be waiting to hear future releases...

5 out of 5 stars A work of musical genius.......2007-01-25

Since signing with Poker Flat Recordings in 2005, Anders Trentemøller has rapidly ascended the ranks of the electronic music world. His unique, unmistakable style - minimal, crunchy beats and beeps - has earned him distinction and recognition from a legion of fans. Finally, he has released The Last Resort, an excellent album that showcases his exceptional musical talent and is certain to gain him even more fans.

The album begins on a strong note with Take Me Into Your Skin, a deep, multi-layered track with a grinding, deep melody. From here, it goes on to Vamp, a groovy track that some find bizarre and uninteresting but I personally love. Next is Evil Dub, which recalls the crunchy, bass-heavy style of many of Trentemøller's singles. Seamlessly, it fades into Always Something Better, a haunting tune that is probably my favorite song on the album.

Once Always Something Better fades out, the album moves back into chillout mode with While The Cold Winter Waiting, a lovely, melodic song that serves as an excellent transition into the more bassy Nightwalker. After this is the brief but epic Like Two Strangers, which pounds its way through to the next track: the heavily-mixed and disorienting The Very Last Resort.

After The Very Last Resort, the album moves into a more upbeat style with Snowflake, Chameleon and Into The Trees (Serenetti Part 3), three bassy and driving tracks. Finally, Trentemøller heads in for a melodic close with Moan and Miss You (the latter of which is probably the most beautiful track on the album).

The Last Resort is a web of gorgeous melodies, beats and patterns that weave together to create an engaging, mind-bending musical experience - easily one of the best albums of 2006. No artist has quite the same blend that Trentemøller seems to effortlessly create with each new release. Undoubtedly, this album will ensure Trentemøller's position as one of the top artists in electronic music.

5 out of 5 stars Trentmoller "The Last Resort".......2007-01-21

I have only heard his remixes of other artists until now. This album intrigued me because the label it is released on is one of my all time favorites "Poker Flat". Trentmoller really pushes the electronic and or techno genre foward with this offering. We need more artists putting out quality like this for electronic music to get more notariety.

5 out of 5 stars music that should be included in every collection.......2007-01-16

Although "house" driven, the experimental nature of this album is what suspends it above the cliche often found in this genre. One gets the sense that there is true inspiration at the heart of this work. This is an artist to watch closely.

Exclusive Asian pressing of this 2007 release includes a bonus CD with five additional remixes! Trentemoller returns with The Last Resort, a beautifully crafted, astonishing masterpiece that will leave you breathless. The 13 instrumental tracks together form a wordless musical story, almost like the soundtrack of a movie. It manages to capture a whole range of emotions in subtle melodic miniatures, dreamy ambiences, dusty beats, deep dub-tracks and driving groove-excursions. An ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors and moods, The Last Resort without a doubt contains Trentemoller's best work to date. Hi Note.

    4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

5 out of 5 stars Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)

Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"

            2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-03-25

First off, I'm not a naysayer who reviews bands from a genre I dislike just to bash the genre. I'm a huge fan of Oi! While the songs on this ablum, like "Skinheads in Stapress" and "Violence in our Minds" are definitely classics, often covered, the recordings are so poor and tone-deaf that it's almost impossible to listen to. Roi is definitely not at the top of his game, and the guitar is actually out of tune for half of the songs. Sometimes I wonder if reviewers actually own the album or simply review well from the strength or LR's reputation. If you want to hear the best recordings of LR, get the Death or Glory split. You get their best performance along with some great material from a great Oi band, Combat 84.

5 out of 5 stars Some high quality Oi!.......2001-01-11

Stuff is just plain great. They aren't my favorite Oi! band, the Business are, but this album is still constantly in my cd player. Once you here "Resort Bootboys" or "We Rule OK" you'll be sold.

            5 out of 5 stars Legendary Oi!.......2000-08-03

Last Resort was probably the greatest Oi! band to come out of England, ever. Skinhead Anthmes was probably the greatest collection of Oi! and Skinhead music, ever. This is a classic album for any fan of modern bands like Anti-Heros, Dropkick Murphys, The Templars, or others like them. And if you've heard and liked The Business, 4-Skins, or Condemded 84, then you will most certainly love this. Skinheads everywhere, add this to your collection. The Last Resort were the greatest Oi! band, period.

5 out of 5 stars THE LAST RESORT RULES AND THIS IS THEIR BEST ALBUM!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-22

There is not much to say about this album because every single song on it is great and I would definatly recomend it to anyone, that likes that type of music (Punk/Oi!). This also my all time favorite album!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not so brilliant.......2004-02-26

well, I bought this cd because is a classic band with attitude and blah, blah, blah...the band is not so good. the lyrics are with any doubt the best of the band, but the music isn't in the same level. the first tracks really rocks!! I'm serious! that's why the 3 stars, but the last track are bored (I mean, just the music)..."waiting for a friend" is a stupid song.
I'm gonna buy the first studio album of the band, the whole album should be great (like the first middle of this "the best of").
oh! Roi Pierce on vocals is terrific on the first tracks, sounds rough and defiant.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest of Oi!.......2001-07-21

The forefathers of Oi! hit you up with a great comp of alot of their best songs. If you're interested in hearing some Last Resort, then this CD is the way to go.

            4 out of 5 stars 3/4 Classic.......2000-05-30

The old LAST RESORT material on this disc (most of it) is the best British Oi! ever made besides BLITZ. The solo Roy rocker stuff at the end is just really bad rock. Roy can be forgiven. Just FF through the bad songs at the end. I hear that some of the other band members are in the Warriors. All respect to them for keeping Oi! alive and I look forward to buying the disc next summer in England.
            Cheers,
            Dave Michelson

5 out of 5 stars No mess, No fuss, Just pure impact....The Last Resort.......2000-04-07

Wow! Talking about skinhead rock at its finest. You can't even compare these guys, seeing how they are some of the originators of the unique style. If anything, you compare others to them. Very head smacking Oi! with rough vocals and lyrics about living the hard life and beating people up after getting drunk. Brilliant! The cd compiles the early stuff from the Last Resort (which is my favorite) and more recent stuff when they reformed in 1989 under the name, The Resort. When you hear The Resort stuff, it sounds like AC/DC or Lynyrd skynyrd at first, but roi's voice kicks in and you know it's oi! This album kicks and any fan of Oi! or punk should get this.

5 out of 5 stars Oi! all the way!.......2000-04-02

Punk rock the way it should be done. I recommend listening to this album before going to a show. You will be very riled up.

The first half of Film Works VIII is devoted to the soundtrack for The Port of Last Resort, a documentary about Jewish refugees escaping Germany in the '30s and emigrating to Shanghai. Much of the music in this section reflects the work on Zorn's Masada discs, except that pipa virtuoso Min Xiao-Fen injects a Chinese undercurrent into the klezmer-tinged jazz. The second half reverberates with an introspective, noncarnivalesque, all-percussion score for the movie Latin Boys Go to Hell. While this might seem like an odd cinematic combination, the cross-pollination on Film Works VIII ultimately produces a successful hybrid collection of world and film music. --Michael Woodring

3 out of 5 stars Asia meets Masada and sensual percussion........2005-09-08

"Filmworks VIII" is the soundtrack for two films-- "Port of Last Resort", a documentary about Jews fleeing Nazi Germany for Shanghai and "Latin Boys Go To Hell", which I confess I have no idea what it is.

For "Port of Last Resort", Zorn hit on the brilliant idea of exploring his Masada songbook with the inclusion of the pipa-- a traditional Asian stringed instrument ably performed by Min Xiao-Fen set against the chamber ensemble setting he'd worked with previously-- in opposition to the pipa is the Masada String Trio (Mark Feldman- violin, Erik Friedlander- cello, and Greg Cohen- bass), guitarist Marc Ribot, and pianist Anthony Coleman in various formations. The music itself borders on absolutely breathtaking at times, although I found the pieces performed exclusively by the trio were a bit lacking in something ("Emunim"), the lovely "Shanghai" (with the Masada String Trio offsetting the pipa) and the pained guitar version of "Ruan" (where its really Feldman who shines) are certainly intriguing.

Zorn sounds a bit bitter in his liner notes concerning "Latin Boys Go To Hell"-- evidentally, the music was largely rejected in favor of rock and disco pieces, which prompted Zorn to ask for his name in the credits to be altered. The music itself ranges from delicate vibes ("Locura") to driving kit drum workouts ("Sangre") and tribal beats ("Mentiras"). All in all, its a fairly interesting and engaging listen.

Together, "Filmworks VIII" is a decent piece-- Zorn has much better soundtrack work, but this is a respectable entry into his catalog.

5 out of 5 stars One of, if not the, best Filmworks CD's out there..........2003-10-08

Marc Ribot's playing on this album is some of his best playing layed down on the Compact Disc medium. Highly recommended... The 2nd half of the CD featuring Wollesen is great too! Mostly percussion yet interesting and articulate. This is a great album that gets better with each listen!

            5 out of 5 stars Lovely..........2000-10-29

THE PORT OF LAST RESORT material on this disc is really quite moving; in addition to players from the Masada String Quartet / Bar Kochba project, a Chinese musician playing the traditional pipa is added. The film, I gather, was about Jewish refugees in Shanghai, and the music blends together Jewish and Asian traditions. It's among the most listenable and beautiful material Zorn has released; while I enjoy his quirky and perverse aspects as much as the next Zorn fan, it's nice to have music by him around that is this mature and reflective. The percussive stuff is less interesting, though there are a couple of nice cuts. One of my favorite filmworks discs (along with 1 and 5). Worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Zorn adds another Filmworks!.......1998-10-16

On the Filmworks discs, you can never be sure what you'll find: surf guitar, covers of Ennio Morricone, freejazz, waltzes of death, punk rock, pipe organ stuff... This one is no surprise. There are two halves to this cd. The first accompanies a Jewish documentary and is based on the feel of Masada/Bar Kokhba, with such players as Erik Friedlander on cello, Anthony Coleman on piano and Marc Ribot on guitar. The second half is the soundtrack to Latin Boys Go To Hell, about discovering sexuality. It is all percussion, with Kenny Wollesen and Cyro Baptista. This made more sense after seeing the film, and is evidently a great soundtrack. Check it out!
