The Last Resort, a surprisingly accessible and wide-ranging work by minimal and tech-house phenom Anders Trentemøller, is a winter wonderland of quiet phosphorescence and pristine beats. Not that the Danish composer/producer/remixer is above contrasts, as in "Evil Dub," where he allows down-tuned and distorted guitars to run like the proverbial bull in a china shop of elegant, understated programming. But tracks like "While the Cold Winter Waiting" beg comparison to the frosty, glockenspiel-laced ambience of Iceland's múm, and the closer, "Miss You," is a hypnotic lullaby sure to receive ample acclaim. After all, Trentemøller's music is distinctly his own, and his eerie command of dynamics allows him a broad palette, exemplified by a gripping bit of turntablism that pops up in one of the album's first singles, "Always Something Better." The second disc's bonus material reveals the man the DJ community has long known: the patient architect who unobtrusively builds beats, loops, and motifs into a critical mass of refined minimalism. All this leaves little doubt that The Last Resort will earn Trentemøller converts from downtempo and electronica circles well beyond his established fan base. --Brent KallmerCustomer Reviews:

THE ATTRACTION
Good, not great.......2007-02-01
Neither estimation is completely correct (the latter one being straight-up wrong):
It is a good album, and as long as you enjoy and are sufficiently familiar with current electronic music ---particularly of a micro or tech-house variety--- you should be able to find some emotional resonance in this recording.
That having been said, this album sounds to me like an artist expanding on micro/tech house roots, allowing his other interests to seep in. I hear something like a "Villalobos-meets-Badalamenti" aesthetic.
The film-music characteristics are sufficient to appeal to listeners outside of the standard electronic fanbase; I think this is why some reviewers feel it to be great, not realizing that there are other albums of comparable mood and quality.
Don't misunderstand me---it is very good. Well-produced, interesting, warm, and varying in textures. It does not possess the unique greatness of the Badalamenti or Morricone soundtracks it at times evokes. There is an independent voice here, but I do not think it is developed enough at present to be considered truly great.
There is much potential here, and I will be waiting to hear future releases...
A work of musical genius.......2007-01-25
The album begins on a strong note with Take Me Into Your Skin, a deep, multi-layered track with a grinding, deep melody. From here, it goes on to Vamp, a groovy track that some find bizarre and uninteresting but I personally love. Next is Evil Dub, which recalls the crunchy, bass-heavy style of many of Trentemøller's singles. Seamlessly, it fades into Always Something Better, a haunting tune that is probably my favorite song on the album.
Once Always Something Better fades out, the album moves back into chillout mode with While The Cold Winter Waiting, a lovely, melodic song that serves as an excellent transition into the more bassy Nightwalker. After this is the brief but epic Like Two Strangers, which pounds its way through to the next track: the heavily-mixed and disorienting The Very Last Resort.
After The Very Last Resort, the album moves into a more upbeat style with Snowflake, Chameleon and Into The Trees (Serenetti Part 3), three bassy and driving tracks. Finally, Trentemøller heads in for a melodic close with Moan and Miss You (the latter of which is probably the most beautiful track on the album).
The Last Resort is a web of gorgeous melodies, beats and patterns that weave together to create an engaging, mind-bending musical experience - easily one of the best albums of 2006. No artist has quite the same blend that Trentemøller seems to effortlessly create with each new release. Undoubtedly, this album will ensure Trentemøller's position as one of the top artists in electronic music.

Exclusive Asian pressing of this 2007 release includes a bonus CD with five additional remixes! Trentemoller returns with The Last Resort, a beautifully crafted, astonishing masterpiece that will leave you breathless. The 13 instrumental tracks together form a wordless musical story, almost like the soundtrack of a movie. It manages to capture a whole range of emotions in subtle melodic miniatures, dreamy ambiences, dusty beats, deep dub-tracks and driving groove-excursions. An ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors and moods, The Last Resort without a doubt contains Trentemoller's best work to date. Hi Note.

A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24
As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.
Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.
I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.
Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23
The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.
The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"

The first half of Film Works VIII is devoted to the soundtrack for The Port of Last Resort, a documentary about Jewish refugees escaping Germany in the '30s and emigrating to Shanghai. Much of the music in this section reflects the work on Zorn's Masada discs, except that pipa virtuoso Min Xiao-Fen injects a Chinese undercurrent into the klezmer-tinged jazz. The second half reverberates with an introspective, noncarnivalesque, all-percussion score for the movie Latin Boys Go to Hell. While this might seem like an odd cinematic combination, the cross-pollination on Film Works VIII ultimately produces a successful hybrid collection of world and film music. --Michael WoodringCustomer Reviews:
Asia meets Masada and sensual percussion........2005-09-08
For "Port of Last Resort", Zorn hit on the brilliant idea of exploring his Masada songbook with the inclusion of the pipa-- a traditional Asian stringed instrument ably performed by Min Xiao-Fen set against the chamber ensemble setting he'd worked with previously-- in opposition to the pipa is the Masada String Trio (Mark Feldman- violin, Erik Friedlander- cello, and Greg Cohen- bass), guitarist Marc Ribot, and pianist Anthony Coleman in various formations. The music itself borders on absolutely breathtaking at times, although I found the pieces performed exclusively by the trio were a bit lacking in something ("Emunim"), the lovely "Shanghai" (with the Masada String Trio offsetting the pipa) and the pained guitar version of "Ruan" (where its really Feldman who shines) are certainly intriguing.
Zorn sounds a bit bitter in his liner notes concerning "Latin Boys Go To Hell"-- evidentally, the music was largely rejected in favor of rock and disco pieces, which prompted Zorn to ask for his name in the credits to be altered. The music itself ranges from delicate vibes ("Locura") to driving kit drum workouts ("Sangre") and tribal beats ("Mentiras"). All in all, its a fairly interesting and engaging listen.
Together, "Filmworks VIII" is a decent piece-- Zorn has much better soundtrack work, but this is a respectable entry into his catalog.
