5 out of 5 stars Merle's 40 #1 Hits.......2007-03-09

I am so glad that I purchased this CD. It is the best CD to have if you are a Merle Haggard Fan. This CD gives the music fan a great taste of all his hits throughout his career. I recommend this CD to any country music fan that loves the "Oldies" of country music and the artist that sings them.

5 out of 5 stars Haggard's 40 Best.......2007-01-18

If you're a Merle Haggard fan, this CD is a must have. From way back to fairly recent, all of Merle's greatest are here. This is real, pure country music.

5 out of 5 stars TO ALAN: NOW I'M A HAGGARD FAN TOO!.......2006-01-21

I owe it all to Alan Jackson. Recently I bought his album, WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU and was listening to the first track, Meat and Potato Man. As I listened I heard Jackson sing, "I'm a Haggard fan. A meat and potato man..." I backtracked on the CD to make sure that I had heard him right. Did he say a Haggard fan? After playing it few a couple of times I was sure that Jackson was pitching Merle Haggard.

Interestingly, the lyrics came back to me again and again over the next few days until, finally, I determined to check Haggard out and 40 #1 HITS was the album that I chose. After listening I can certainly see why Alan Jackson would call himself "a Haggard Fan." If you haven't heard anything from Merle Haggard, there's certainly much more than the stereotypic "Okie From Muskogee." Here you'll be introduced to a broad range of Haggard offerings like "Mama Tried," "Grandma Harp," "I'm Always On A Mountain When I Fall," "Pancho And Lefty (with Willie Nelson)," and, my album favorite, "Going Where The Lonely Go." But, heck, there are forty songs here, any of which I could have listed.

Is Haggard worth a listen? Absolutely. Alan Jackson was dead right!

According to Billboard, Merle Haggard from Bakersfield, CA had 90 chart releases from 1963 to 1990. Think about that statistic! All 38 #1 songs are here on this two CD release. Two of Merle's 8 #2 hits round out the collection. Personal favorites are highly subjective but his reviewer favored "Things Aren't Funny Anymore", "and "Sing Me Back Home". The latter was dedicated to a former fellow inmate at San Quentin who was executed for murdering a prison guard. The former was composed while a marriage was breaking up. VERY special mention goes to " I Wonder If They Ever Think of Me". It's about a POW in Vietnam who is afraid his family and friends back in the World have forgotten him. That must have happened in real life far too often. The only tracks that failed to satisfy were the 3 duets, "Bar Room Buddies" - with Clint Eastwood! - "Pancho and Lefty" with Willie Nelson and "Yesterday's Wine" with George Jones. There is a fine quasi-duet with the ubiquitous Janie Fricke, "A Place to Fall Apart". Merle has always admitted to be heavily influenced by Lefty Frizzell and the similarity of styles is unmistakable, more to the credit of both men. Linear notes by Nancy Henderson embellish the collection and give context to several of the tracks. (Some may feel that the small, dropped out typeface doesn't do the insert complete justice.) Before reading Joel Whitburn's "Billboard Book of Country Music", this reviewer was unaware that many of Hag's best-known work did NOT attain #1 status. That list would include "Ramlin' Fever", and "Misery and Gin". Their exclusions should be ignored. The final word here is that this CD is a worthwhile addition to any serious classic country collection. For the $$, it is also a great value. Testimony such as that may appear trite, but it is on target in this case

2 out of 5 stars Barroom Buddies is off vinyl!.......2005-02-01

The hard to find duet "Barroom Buddies" with Clint Eastwood from the soundtrack of Any Which Way You Can is taken from VERY poor quality vinyl for this collection. Shame On You Capitol Records! Although this collection is issued by Capitol Records, I have a sneaking suspicion that many of the songs here that were originally released on Capitol are rerecorded versions. Can anybody verify this? The Sony titles are definetly the originals (tracks 9-20 on disc 2).

Merle has that wonderful early country music warmth when he sings. It is all about his experiences and his feelings. He doesn't rely on all the electronic back ups to high light his voice, it is just him.

I was fascinated to find out that Merle either wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on this CD. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes the "real country" music. All you have to do is listen to this CD and you will know that Merle has lived what he writes about. You will like this CD!

Hag went into the studio in October 1994 to rerecord his Capitol classics of the 1960s and early 1970s. Thirteen of these 16 cuts come from that session--perfectly fine versions, but not the original versions--while three early-1980s Epic recordings round out the collection. Still, fans who want to hear the Capitol chestnuts in their original form should strongly consider the outstanding two-CD Lonesome Fugitive: The Merle Haggard Anthology. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not original tracks--but Excellent later studio versions.......2006-11-27

Great Merle Haggard songs performed by him and an uncredited band in the eighties, in chronological order, from his career beginning through the mid-eighties. Sound is excellent, arrangements are different enough to be interesting but not so different that they take your mind from the originals. Merle's voice sounds excellent throughout. A reasonably-priced compilation done by an older, wiser Haggard. A good companion to the original tracks. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Hag.......2006-02-06

I'm not sure how many different studio recordings of "Mama Tried" Merle released, but I've heard at least 3 different versions of it. I think I've finally found the version I like, this one. This is the one that used to be on the box at the National Liquor bar. In this version the line "no one could steer me right...but mamma tried", you have that pause there, this version is far superior to the other studio recordings, yes even the original. This one is sung with the most emotion by far.

5 out of 5 stars Merle sings the hits of yesteryear.......2005-01-07

A mature Merle Haggard looks back to his early hits in this CD that was mostly recorded in the mid-to-late '90s, nearly three decades after these songs were chart-toppers. His voice has a bit more whiskey and gravel in it, but is still that unique sound, often a sound of pain, that is purely Merle. These are tales of hardship and loneliness, and Merle has at one time or another in his life lived them. The song I always find to be a heartbreaker is "Hungry Eyes", where Merle's writing genius captures a story of need so vividly we can almost see it in our mind's eye. "Working Man Blues" is a great toe-tapper, as is "The Fightin' Side of Me", a song that expresses how many of us feel in the present time.

Most of the tracks have simple but excellent backing, but there is no recording info given as to who is in the band in the minimal liner notes.
There are three tracks that were previously released: Two from the "Big City" CD from 1981 (tracks # 13 and # 14) and one from the "Going Where the Lonely Go" from 1982 (track # 15).
This is a terrific CD, as long as one isn't expecting the original recordings; I appreciate the legendary Haggard at every stage of his long career...and this look back at his early work is wonderful...music that tells stories from a time long gone, but still so relevant today.
The sound for the most part is good and total playing time is 50'58.

4 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years..........2004-06-17

I withhold one star from this because these tracks were all recorded in October, 1994, although the original singles were released in the '60's, 70's and 80's. That said, it is still a fine one-disc collection of SOME of Merle's best. His voice was still great in '94, and the man knows how to write a song and put one over. "Lonesome Fugitive" and "Branded Man" and "Sing Me Back Home" and "Fightin' Side of Me" and "Big City" are all great. "Mama Tried" is universal. There is a two-CD collection just released earlier this year (2004) which probably represents the artist more completely, but if you find this one at a good price, it should please all his fans. Merle sings "Working Man Blues" on this disc, and I have tickets to see him perform on July 3rd. Check out his website and you'll see he works a heck of a lot for an old geezer born in 1937 (seven years older than I am!) He is one of country's greatest singers, along with Jones and Cash and Nelson, and still has something to say to music fans young enough to be his grandchildren.

1 out of 5 stars I shoulda consulted with Amazon!!.......2001-11-09

I picked up this CD in a store and when I got it home, realized that instead of the original versions of his hits, we have re-hashed re-recordings from 1994! What a let down! I was expecting the old classics recorded with the Strangers! Shame on Sony Music for not labeling this collection on it's outer package for what it is. Thank you Amazon for honestly describing the contents on your website!

5 out of 5 stars Short Compilation, But Still Perfect.......2007-07-13

There are many Merle Haggard compilations floating around these days, but "His Epic Hits," which showcases a some of his work from the early 80's, is one of the best despite only having eleven tracks on it. It gives the listener a good taste of Haggard without holding back too much or going overboard. Opening with "Reasons To Quit" and then winding its way through hits like "That's The Way Love Goes," "Big City," and "Going Where The Lonely Go," this album shows the listener that Haggard is just as comfortable singing ballads as he is with honky-tonk. George Jones and Willie Nelson are also here with Jones helping out on "C.C. Waterback" and Nelson pitching in on the great "Pancho and Lefty."

My personal favorite Haggard song (and the original reason I bought this album) is also found here: "Are The Good Times Really Over?"

For those who've never heard of Merle Haggard, this is an excellent introductory album. There are better and more complete collections of his work around, but for a good sampler, I'd suggest you pick up "His Epic Hits."

5 out of 5 stars great songs from start to finish.......2004-03-19

When this album came out, Haggard was amidst the wildly successful duet phase of his career: from 1982-1983 he was with George Jones on the radio and in select concerts and from 1983-1984 Willie Nelson was paired with him. The album closes with his Top-10 duet with George, "C.C. Waterback". Willie is heard on two tracks: the Top-10 opener "Reasons To Quit" and then on the smash #1 "Pancho and Lefty", which in truth, is a Willie Nelson song with Haggard adding in a closing verse. other great songs are "Big City"; "Are The Good Times Really Over"; "My Favorite Memory"; and "That's The Way Love Goes". Most people tend to over-look or downplay Haggard's songs AFTER he left Capitol in the late '70s for MCA and then EPIC. CURB issued two volumes of hits on Haggard spotlighting his Capitol era, trying to include the most important songs in his career and they succeeded. MCA issued a Greatest Hits album in 1983 of his 1977-1982 hits. EPIC issued this album and the 1990 "Greatest Hits of the '80s" CD. This first volume of EPIC hits is essential if you have the 1990 sequel. however, several box sets contain ALL of these songs and many others but for the budget minded, seek out the individual hits CDs like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Early eighties classics from Merle.......2004-02-16

Some say that the early eighties were Merle's best years. I wouldn't go quite that far, but he certainly made some excellent music back then and this set, dominated by ballads, proves it. In particular, there were two classic albums - Big city (represented here by three tracks) and Pancho and Lefty (a collection of duets with Willie Nelson, represented here by two tracks) - that are among the best he ever recorded.

Big city is represented by the title track, Are the good times really over and My favorite memory, although this classic album deserves to be heard in its entirety, whether you buy this collection of hits or not. Pancho and Lefty is represented by the title track (on which Merle only joins in near the end - it's almost a Willie solo track) and Reasons to quit.

Elsewhere, Merle shows his way with ballads such as You take me for granted, That's the way love goes (a cover of a Conway Twitty song that Merle later re-recorded as a duet with folk-pop singer Jewel, who is a fan of Merle's), Someday when things are good, What am I gonna do and Going where the lonely go.

Another country legend, George Jones, joins Merle on C C Waterback, rounding off an excellent set in fine style. Another of their duets, Yesterday's mine, can be found on an other of Merle's compilations, Greatest hits of the eighties, which (apart from that track) covers the second half of his Epic recordings.

This is a great collection of hits from Merle, of which only about half the tracks are included in his boxed set, Down the road. There are many compilations of his music out there, but this one is among the best despite only having eleven tracks.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2002-12-09

This is the first and only Merle Haggard album I have ever owned and I never get tired of listening to it! Every single song on it is great. Listen to it a couple of times and you are hooked! Truly worth buying. I too am of the younger generation that truly appreciates the old country singers such as George Jones, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, etc. This stuff is good!

History occurs twice, first as tragedy, later as farce--or so the adage goes. With these new versions of old classics, Merle Haggard is somewhere between defying and fulfilling that fate. Some cuts are like faded carbon copies; others, given Hag's stately quaver, have a mellow poignancy; a few, like the duets with Jewel, Brooks & Dunn, and Alabama, are simply irrelevant. But just when you're ready to dismiss such misguided revisionism, there's a refreshed, superlative version of "Pancho and Lefty" and the perfected heartbreak of "Going Where the Lonely Go." To his credit, Haggard sticks with his long-running road band, and it's hard to imagine anyone else delivering these songs with more authority, more emotional insight. Anyone, that is, save their original interpreters: Merle Haggard and the Strangers of the '60s and '70s, whose definitive work can still be heard on collections like the four-CD Down Every Road and double-disc Lonesome Fugitive. Haggard may never make records that great again, but perhaps he'll find a new, and not redundant, way to harness his timeless gifts. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection.......2007-03-13

All of the great hits in one collaboration. His duets with Jewel are priceless and should not be missed.

1 out of 5 stars Hag, you disappoint me man.......2006-08-27

There's something wrong with a process where you (or someone you trust) believe that you can show up in a studio 30 years after the fact and fool your audience into accepting one-take counterfeits as "43 Legendary Hits."

When you recorded these hits, YOU MADE HISTORY--Your fans knew it, bought your records, and rewarded you for it.

This is an insult to your audience.

Have some self-respect. If you want to continue to make a mark, act like a real artist and do what Johnny Cash did: Give us something NEW, something FRESH, something that will knock our socks off, like "Hurt".

If you want to retire, then RETIRE ALREADY. Nobody will hold it against you, and I for one wish you the absolute best. But for gosh sakes, if this is the best scheme you can come up with, then please stay home and keep your trap shut.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ripoff.......2006-01-28

Like many others, I was fooled by this cd. About all the Haggard I'd heard was Mamma Tried and Oakie from Muskogee, so I was looking forward to exploring his work. When Mamma Tried fired up, I realized this was a remake and in a fit of rage I tossed the cd into the back of my closet. Time passed. I realized that I still hadn't heard this man's work, and that I had this cd. So I played it.

What a revelation. The man is great. He has a wonderful voice, an awesome band, great tunes and amazing lyrics. This is a wonderful cd. I am looking forward to hearing the originals, and if they are better than this, then I will be truely blessed.

1 out of 5 stars Remakes.......2005-08-13

A few years ago, Merle Haggard sat down and remade almost all of his biggest hits in a mamoth recording session. Now all of these songs are spreading around to every cheap record company who repackages them.

Be careful, everything here is remakes.

1 out of 5 stars Re-recordings. Avoid like the plague!.......2005-06-06

I bought this CD set thinking the songs were the original recordings. I was wrong. I still respect Merle, and think he's still making wonderful contributions to real country music, but . . . he just didn't have the original strength & punch of his original recordings. It's like listening to Johnny Cash sing "Hurt," and imagining him singing Folsom Prison Blues in the same voice -- painful.

Avoid, avoid, avoid.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation from his MCA years.......2003-09-20

At the time of his MCA records period, Merle was becoming a singles artist, and his Lp's started to drift in quality.

This cd, made back when there were hardly any other Merle cds, was a Godsend. Great music from start to finish.

Please remember, when this cd came out, there were no fancy, collector's type compilations available. Those were years in the future. This is a straight ahead cd, the song listing is in the booklet along with who wrote them. Then there is an ad for other MCA artists who were lucky enough to have a recording on the then new Cd.

Go ahead and get this if you can find it, you will love it!

1 out of 5 stars much better compilations available.......2002-11-04

obtain these Capitol era songs from a different compilation (the other submitted review for this CD refers to an identically titled MCA collection)...to get a good quality, single-disc collection of the original recordings of some of Merle Haggard's greatest music, "20 Greatest Hits" on the Capitol/EMI label is good, as is the budget cd "Best of the Best" also on Capitol (avoid similarly titled releases on different labels)...to really do Merle Haggard's legacy justice, easily the best single purchase currently available is the multi-label box set compilation called "Down Every Road"

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album!!!!!!.......1999-04-05

Buy this album. You will love it!!!! It consists of some of Merle's biggest hits from the mid-seventies to the end of the decade. Fabulous!!!!
