5 out of 5 stars Introducing the Greatest Voice of All Time.......2007-03-13

A new generation of music lovers deserves to know, understand and appreciate the greatness of Mario Lanza. Five decades after his passing, millions of lovers of "grand voices" still are held in awe by the power, passion and beauty of his voice.

This selection of recordings has a number of fine selections that give a small "flavor" of his fantastic talent and skills. It is a good beginning for someone who wants to know "The American Caruso."

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Tenor of the 20th Century........2007-01-21

In a professional career that lasted just a bit over ten years Mario Lanza created more memorable recordings, broadcasts, concert perfomances and feature films than any other major vocalist in the classical and pop-jazz music genre. He was a man blessed with arguably the finest tenor voice in recorded music. Fans of Caruso, Pavarotti, Jan Peerce, Placido Domingo or Careras may argue that their tenor interpreted a particular aria better than anyone else but few if any can argue against the sheer beauty, power and emotion of Mario Lanza. He achieved worldwide success too fast and his penchant for the good life: wine, women and good food got the best of him in the end. It is so sad, when one contemplates Lanza's short but brilliant career and what might have been, that he was gone at age 38, an age when some tenors are just beginning to hit their stride. This album is a fine overview of some of his most memorable heavy classics as well as lighter operetta standards and showcases his voice so well. Nearly fifty years have transpired since his untimely death in 1959 and there is yet to appear on the scene a tenor with the power, charisma or sheer beauty of Lanza's voice. I highly recommend this album to the Lanza novice or those just starting their Opera CD collections.

5 out of 5 stars Easy listening.......2006-02-27

I have always liked Mario Lanza and the album is wonderful and relaxing.

4 out of 5 stars Lanza of the joyous voice!.......2005-07-14

This album has some really splendid songs, and yes, it's a good introduction to the King of the high last notes. I grew up with one of Lanza's albums and more or less learned to sing by singing along with his wonderful warm voice. What good energy he had... and too bad he died so young (sigh). It certainly lifts my spirits to listen to his music again and I hope anyone reading this will take a chance and get to know him too.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad as an introduction to Lanza.......2001-11-13

I recommend this collection as a good starting point for those interested in this extraordinary tenor. It's not a complete representation of the man by any stretch of the imagination, but it includes a handful of unforgettable recordings that will make newcomers to Lanza sit up in astonishment.

Highlights include the immortal Serenade & Golden Days from The Student Prince, Beloved (from the film version of the Student Prince, and arguably Lanza's best English-language love song), Because You're Mine, If I Loved You, and the stirring Addio Alla Madre from Cavalleria Rusticana. If love songs seem a little over-represented at the expense of arias and (notably) Italian & Neapolitan Songs, then blame BMG for their habitual neglect of Lanza's more serious side. In any event, this is essentially a one-CD version of the three-CD set, The Mario Lanza Collection. All of the renditions are the same as on the earlier CD, as are the sound sources. With the exception of The Student Prince Serenade, most of the selections here have never sounded better.

Be aware, however, that several of the arias are in fact retakes of more familiar versions. Vesti La Giubba, for instance, is an alternate take from Lanza's May 1950 session, and although the tenor is in great voice, the orchestra lets him down on the climactic phrase by moving on before he has finished his High A on the word "infranto". The Flower Song is even more unrestrained than the familiar take - great fun, but not the kind of recording you'd want newcomers to Lanza to hear! (Lanza never quite "nailed" this aria, but his heart was in the right place.) La Donna E Mobile is the familiar 1950 version in the first half, but is replaced by an inferior retake in the second half, followed by an edited-in High B ending (on "pensier") from the original recording!

The only truly bad recording is the inexplicably popular With A Song In My Heart. Lanza is unfocused, and strains his way throughout the piece. Yours Is My Heart Alone is somewhat better, but is easily surpassed by the tenor's 1956 recording with the conductor Henri Rene (and currently unavailable on CD).

The "Greatest Hits" are here: the million-selling Be My Love, Loveliest Night of The Year and the aforementioned Because You're Mine. I have to confess to an aversion to the first two - Lanza was often a far better singer than these recordings suggest - but most fans, I'm sure, will continue to cherish them. Besides, what tenor since Lanza has ever sung Be My Love without straining his way through the wretched thing and then fudging the High C at the end? Lanza made it his own, and to be fair to the song, it is actually a very difficult piece to pull off, as Messrs Domingo, Carreras and Leech will no doubt attest. But that was also one of Lanza's most under-appreciated strengths - he made everything sound so easy. Listeners accustomed to the laborious efforts of most present-day tenors will be astounded by the freshness, ease, and sheer bravado of these performances.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The good old times.......2006-11-06

This has always been one of my favorite soundtrack albums. Being sung in Andy Williams' smooth voice is a plus. The best of the best!

5 out of 5 stars True Classics.......2006-11-06

An excellent rendition of some of the best movie themes of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Second Columbia album was huge success.......2005-01-14

After some earlier successes, Andy Williams joined Columbia in 1962 and recorded two albums for them that year - Danny Boy and Moon River, which helped to set his career going in the direction he wanted it.

Following encouraging sales of Andy's first Columbia album (Danny boy), his second, Moon River, brought together a collection of movie themes and made the top three in the American album charts. Curiously, the title track was never released as a single although it became his signature song. (In the UK, the song became a number one hit for Danny Williams - no relation).

Apart from the title track, the album contains Andy's excellent interpretations of such classics as A summer place, Maria, Never on Sunday, As time goes by, It might as well be spring, Three coins in the fountain and others.

With the Danny Boy and Moon River albums, Andy left nobody in any doubt that he was a ballad singer with no interest in recording up-tempo songs. That he was able to build a career as a balladeer despite changing musical fashions is a measure of the man's talent.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Williams goes Hollywood!.......2004-12-09

My LP copy of this album is a hand-me-down. It was also a hand-me-down when my late grandparents owned it. My uncle got it at a garage sale with many other record albums in late 1979. Here,Andy Williams, although he never had a film career, goes Hollywood with twelve awesome movie themes from films theatrically released in the 40's,50's and 60's. This album was originally released in 1962 in stereo and mono. My copy was stereo(just how I like it). I first heard LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING on the GREASE movie soundtrack. It was recorded by an unknown artist(there were unknown voices but no words). A SUMMER PLACE was a hit in 1960 for Percy Faith. MARIA is so beautiful. I also love the "la-la-la-la's" on NEVER ON SUNDAY. The title track,co-written by Johnny Mercer and the late Henry Mancini is from 1961's BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY's starring the late Audrey Hepburn. All the other songs are good. Like THE ANDY WILLIAMS CHRISTMAS ALBUM,Williams sports a tuxedo in the cover photo.

5 out of 5 stars The Good Times.......2004-02-16

Outstanding! Andy Williams performs like nobody else can. It forever reminds me of the "good old days" and how life, movies and music went hand-in-hand. I treasure it dearly and guarantee it will be one of your most prized possessions. I've listened to it for 40 years and I'm still overwhelmed by the beautiful songs and the wonderful memories they bring to life.
It is simply too beautiful for words.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Album Lived Up To Its Namesake.......2005-11-18

The CD contains some of her best works of which she employs her big vocal range (soprano to baritone), sweet, sassy voice and excellent signature vibrato (as evident on "Speak Low") on various styles of music. As a Great American Songbook interpreter, her technique is good and musicians treat her as a part of their own due to her creativity in music improvisation and utilisation of her voice as a musical instrument (scat-singing).

Typically most of her songs are of jazz. However, the other variants are:
1) Doo-wop - All of Me
2) Oldies - Broken-Hearted Melody
3) Classical - My Man's Gone Now (Written by Gershwin)
4) Bossa Nova - Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Latin version sung by Astrud Gilberto)
5) Blues - No Count Blues

This CD is good, especially for starters. Sarah Vaughan is quite a diverse artiste. If you found any of the styles above is good, try getting her CDs, which is of the same genre that you like:
1) Doo-wop - Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan (collaborative work)
2) Oldies - *
3) Classical - Sarah Sings Gershwin
4) Bossa Nova - I Love Brazil , Copacabana
5) Blues - *
6) Swing - Sarah Swings Tivoli, Swingin' Easy
7) Broadway - Sarah Sings Broadway
8) Cool Jazz - Crazy and Mixed Up

It should be taken note that, in a quirk of nature, her voice "dropped" in her later years of her career. In the late 70s to 1990, her range increased "downwards" significantly (to the baritone level). At that point of time, her voice becomes less sweeter, but she sounds fuller. At this point of time, her voice has certain smoky quality. Her vocal technique is at her best and deserves recommendation, as evident in these albums:
1) Crazy and Mixed Up - Cool jazz
2) Send In The Clowns
3) How Long Has This Been Going On? - The smokey voice is more evident here

The only album that I will not recommend is Sarah Swings The Beatles. The production of the songs will not appeal to listeners who like her singing. The mixing of the music is poor as well.

* Still searching for the appropriate album. Will update once I get it

4 out of 5 stars Classic Sara Vaughn.......2003-10-16

A real treat to listen to. Soulful, sassy, well composed, some of her great songs for sure - but not all of them.

4 out of 5 stars Sarah and Orchestras.......2001-11-27

Great singers do not need big ensembles. Although this is a CD of high merit, the orchestra and jazz ensemble obsure the beauty, enchantment and (vocal)timbre changes that Sarah Vaughan so often exhibits in her works. Although I love vocal virtuosity, the vocal acrobatics presented here are a bit much; but, due to the quality of some songs selected, I will only assume, Sarah had no choice. Thank goodness the song "Feelings" was not written, as of yet (I think), during the time this album of songs was produced. However, for those who prefer big orchestras accompanying singers, this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars UNEQUALED CROSS-OVER ARTIST.......2000-08-31

Sarah Vaugh's song "Broken Hearted Melody" that went to the top of the POP Charts in 1958/59 is an example of a pure artist who can use her voice in any venue. This is an excellent album. To me it's her finest produced.

His piano skills, utilised to devastating effect on a series of show scores, reached ultimate perfection on the most celebrated of these when Andre teamed with drummer Shelly Manne and Leroy Vinnegar on double-bass for jazz-tinged songs from the newly-opened MY FAIR LADY in 1956. Listening to brilliant interpretations of GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME, I'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO HER FACE, SHOW ME and five others, is indeed worth the price of this compilation alone but a previous teaming with Shelly Manne in 1953 also brings forth HONEYSUCKLE ROSE and BLACK AND BLUE.

Previn's earlier expertise is also recalled by standards recorded in 1946/47, with Ellington's I GOT IT BAD AND THAT AIN'T GOOD and TAKE THE "A" TRAIN heading equally impressive versions of THIS CAN'T BE LOVE and JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS from Richard Rodgers and Cole Porter respectively. Such seminal recordings display the extent of influence eminent keyboard stylists, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson and Nat King Cole played on Previn's developing piano skills with overall this collection displaying a timeless quality.

Perhaps the title is a bit off the mark: This set, recorded at Donte's in Los Angeles in 1972, isn't some sort of comprehensive catalog of the greatest American songs. After all, it's possible to find more enduring standards than "Close to You" (Bacharach/David) or "A Song for You" (Leon Russell) or "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" (Legrand/Bergman/Bergman). And while Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, and Johnny Mercer are represented (by "Satin Doll," "At Long Last Love," and "I Thought About You," respectively), there's no Gershwin or Berlin or Kern. But that's not really the point, is it? The great McRae make's 'em all sound like classic American songs in a recording that's as close as you'll ever get to seeing her in the intimacy of a small club. The laughter, sighs, and applause of the audience, tinkling cocktail glasses and spoken intros (most of which have been cut for the CD release) put you right there with McRae and the four-piece band, including Joe Pass on guitar and Jimmy Rowles on piano. Maybe it should just have been called Great American Singing. --Jim Emerson

This woman used magic to sing. Nothing else can describe the unbelievable way Carmen McRae interprets this music. All of her recordings are a trip down memory lane. This one puts you in a chair next to the stage in the club.

Perfect lounge music. McRae one of the best. Live recording accounts for some audio quality issues but overall excellent for library for a vocalist enthusiast.

Listening to this live outing on CD, with most of Carmen's spoken introductions cut out, is a frustrating experience. I had bought the CD a while back, but couldn't really get into it. Then I ran across the old vinyl double album in a used-record store, so I bought it to find out what I had been missing. And let me tell you, Carmen's witty and brash banter makes all the difference in establishing this album as a true listening experience. She cuts up for two and a half minutes alone before launching into "The Ballad of Thelonious Monk." Hearing Carmen speak to the audience does a lot to establish a sense of the room in which she was performing, the jovial mood she was in, and the spirit of that night in Donte's. And you know what, the sound even seems a bit richer on the old vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, Carmen!.......2002-11-01

It is a simple and disappointing fact that Carmen McRae spent much of her career in the collective shadow of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. However, unlike many vocalists who would (and did) throw in the towel, she carved out and developed a style all her own; while leaving us some wonderful music in the process.
This collection is a perfect example of that. She took these songs and interpreted them in ways that Ms. Vaughan and Ms. Fitzgerald couldn't touch. This collection proves that over most of her career she successfully resisted the temptation to try and sound more like Sarah or Ella. For that, we should be very thankful!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-08-21

I'm lucky to have a great jazz station in my area (KCSM 91.9), and when they played a few of the tracks from the "At Ratso's" CD, I was intrigued. I found this CD at the local library, strangely enough.

Carmen McRae is an excellent vocalist, and she shines in this live, intimate setting, backed by a great rhythym section. She can really put inflection and attitude, not to mention emotion, into her voice.

The title of this album is rather misleading, and something like "Live at Donte's" would be more appropriate. I'm a bit disappointed that they had to cut the spoken introductions, and I'll keep a lookout for those LPs (even though I have no record player...heh).

Live jazz is like nothing else, pick up this CD.

This is a great cd. I heard it inside a little music place one day and asked the old lady who was singing the song I was hearing. She got me out this cd and I got it for like 8 dollars. Every song on here is so great. I am only 21 and I love it. It makes me miss old good music like this. So unless you only like a certin kind of music I say get this it has amazing songs and is very relaxing. You may be able to find it at a lower price at your local record store so you may want to check there first.

5 out of 5 stars An Aptly Titled Jazz Album.......2002-02-06

This is the quintessential collection of the best female voices in jazz. This collection has the songs that made these women famous and/or the songs for which they are most remembered. Every song on the cd is a gem!!! The highlights are Ella's live recording of "It Don't Mean a Thing(If It Ain't Got That Swing)" and Nina Simone's "I Loves You, Porgy." All twelve songs run the gamut of emotions from true bliss to deepest sorrow. These women knew how to sing and these selections are some of the greatest in the american songbook. I highly recommend this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Great old Gems.......2002-01-24

I bought this CD a few years ago on a whim, never having listened to jazz before. I fell in love with Ella Fitzgerald's voice, she's outstanding. This CD features some great female voices, incredible musicianship and for price, you cannot go wrong!

3 out of 5 stars Dinah Washington - The Great Songs.......2007-01-10

I got this disc for the song "What a Diff'rence a Day Made," which,
in Spanish is "Cuando vuelvas a tu lado." The song is an all-time
favorite of mine. I did not find the recording to be as clear as
I would have liked. I'm keeping it, though.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have CD.......2005-10-04

Before buying this CD, I knew Dinah Washington best for her couple of top 10 hits such as What A Difference A Day Made and This Bitter Earth, and for her duets with Brook Benton. As this CD proves, there is so much more to her, and her 50s recordings found here show that she ranks among the blues, jazz and R&B greats. She gets some fine smokey arrangements as well on many of the cuts, with players such as Jimmy Cleveland and Wynton Kelly. Only one song here doesn't work for me and it's one I'd thought would be a killer, I've Got You Under My Skin. Powerful as the whole CD is, I think it peaks at the end, beginning with the Birth of the Blues/Don't Hurt Any More. This CD is for anyone with an interest in the history of mid-20th century jazz and blues and it's a just tribute to a wonderful singer.

5 out of 5 stars Somebody Do A Movie On This Woman..........2004-02-11

...maybe it will wake my generation up to respect this woman. Her music and life is truly a discovery of wonder, love, comedy, and heartaches. If you thought Whitney's life is a mess, you need to research Dinah's. At least Dinah had fun, right? The one thing I can say about Dinah is that all her trials, happiness and misfortunate she always put them into her songs. This woman was not shy about being real when it came to her music and it didn't matter whether it was pop, jazz, blues or r&b. And unlike Whitney and today's singers, she was a TRUE professional singer. She never allowed her personal problems to affect her music. I wish somebody will do a movie about her life and get Jill Scott to play her. Until then, I will continue to listen to this woman's amazing music and dreaming of the day that she gets some respect. If you are new to Dinah, this is the collection you need to start with.

    5 out of 5 stars Classy.......2002-07-17

Dinah Washington is truly a Singer's Singer. She understood the power of Lyrics&the Importance of allowing the feeling&emotions come through. She is a Great Stylish Artist who had no limits. Her take on "I've got you under my skin" alone is worth the full Price to Me overall. She knew how to Swing&Connect with Her Music.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Is Accurate: This Really Is An Essential!.......2002-06-02

Reknowned for a straight-forward, powerhouse voice and a knock-out stage presence, Dinah Washington is one of the great vocalists of the 20th Century--but is today little known outside the circle of serious jazz fans. This is a great pity, for the lady was a remarkable talent, as this Verve release makes abundantly clear.

Washington had a rather limited range, but like Billie Holiday she carefully sculpted her voice to maximum effect--and her instrument is a knock-you-flat one, with many of her vocals relying on her ability to strike and hold a high, intensely voiced tone. But if Washington's vocal range was limited, her material was not: she is as at home with hard jazz and blues as she is with sleek orchestral arrangements and throw-away numbers, and this collection presents examples of it all: from the funky jazz of "I've Got You Under My Skin," in which she offers a completely unexpected interpretation of the Cole Porter classic, to the more orchestrial scored "Blue Gardenia," a personal favorite, these cuts are winners all the way.

If you've heard about Dinah Washington but never actually encountered her music, this compilation is a perfect place to start. But be forewarned: the lady's music is addictive, and once you begin to explore it you're likely to leap feet first into every available recording. For once, the title THE ESSENTIALS is dead-on accurate; strongly recommended.
