Customer Reviews:
Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02
Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"
Unimpressive.......2006-03-11
I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.
better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06
but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.
all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out
Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17
Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).
I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!
(and read the liner notes, they're fun)
Not your average white band.......2005-07-29
"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.
Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

A GREAT COLLECTION OF SONGS FROM THE ORIGINATORS.......2003-02-19
DON RENO IS WELL KNOWN BUT PERHAPS NOT WELL KNOWN ENOUGH. THESE SONGS ARE AMPLE PROOF THAT HE WAS DOING THE 3 FINGER STYLE WITH PRECISION NEAR THE SAME TIME AS EARL SCRUGGS. THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM THAT SHOWS THE GREAT VOCAL HARMONY AND GREAT MUSICIANSHIP OF DON RENO AND RED SMILEY. THEY BOTH PASSED AWAY MANY YEARS AGO BUT THERE MUSIC WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON!
Classic Bluegrass.......2001-09-07
I was weaned on this album in vinyl. The CD lets the vocals and instruments shine. This is a must have for bluegrass lovers. I am finally ordering my own copy, thanks Pop for letting me listen to yours!
great bluegrass music from two pioneers.......1999-08-21
The names Reno and Smiley should be enough to persuade anyone to buy this cd. Bluegrass like it should be from two original pioneers. I believe this should be a part of any bluegrass music lover collection.

Customer Reviews:
For kids of all ages.......2006-11-25
I teach 9 and 10 year olds. They are too "grown up" for most kids CD's. This is one we all could enjoy. And they don't even know they are getting a lesson!
Pleasure for adults as well kids.......2004-07-29
I'm not sure I'd call myself a grownup, but I'm definitely no kid -- and I can't help but smile large every time I listen to this one. Kids love it -- and their grownups can get a kick from the wordplay and the general good natured silliness of all the songs. This is an album with heart and soul -- excellent messages without sounding messagy -- if you know what I mean. Enjoy!
Fabulous for all ages!.......2004-05-25
I am the mother of a 1 year old but I love these songs myself! LaMotte is so talented. He takes familiar words or tunes and rearranges them in wonderful ways. There are also songs all his own, and they are just great! I love this CD and highly recommend it to anyone with or without kids! His songs are meaningful and fun!
Great CD.......2002-10-29
My 3 year old daughter first heard this CD at day care and now she has her very own copy. It has replaced her Disney CD (thank goodness) in the CD player. She loves it.

Customer Reviews:
Didn't work for me ... but possibly not their fault.......2002-09-10
I had heard a couple of 'bluegrass' gospel tunes on radio (such as "I'll fly away") and really liked them so I thought I'd try the CD. I was disappointed to find that the ones I'd heard were really the only ones I liked. Most of the others just seemed to be slightly doleful immitations of the ones I had liked.
To be fair, I am British and maybe this genera just isn't for me.
Great Music!.......2002-04-07
I have been listening to this tape for years and now it has sadly worn out. I sqeeled in delight when I saw that it was still available, and on CD even! All of the best musicians and bluegrass hymns are gathered together on this CD. If you love bluegrass hymns, this is the best!

The best "various artists" I've heard........1999-10-06
I picked up this album in the late 80's when I was first learning the banjo. I've bought a LOT of bluegrass since, but none are better (or as good) as this. This album captures the bluegrass spirit better than any other. It's all there: whoops & hollars, jigs & reels, pickin, grinnin', tempos that defy transcription, hot fiddling, taunts & shouts. If you want to take a look into bluegrass, look no further than this disc. You'll be smiling...just don't listen to it while you drive, smokey will be on your tail!

Album Description
Sleeper, the third release by singer/songwriter Terence Martin, brings his musical poetry and performance to a new level and contains some of his most compelling songs to date. The 12 finely crafted originals flow with hauntingly poetic images and elements of folk, roots, blues, country and bluegrass. Sleeper was produced by Terence and Dennis Hrbek and features performances by Jim Allen on guitar, mandolin & accordion, Dan Bonis on dobro, lap steel & 12 string slide, Cadence Carroll on djembe & Charlie karp on electric guitar.
Customer Reviews:
Introspective, Transcendant Beauty.......2006-02-10
Terrence Martin is, if not the best, one of the best singer/songwriters on the folk music scene today. If you are a folky poser and enjoy Ani De Franco, it's not for you. If you love REAL contemporary folk music, you'd be hard pressed to find a better album put out within the last 40 years.
Outstanding.......2004-01-16
Terence Martin is a wonderful writer and a superb musician.
If you don't like easy, contemplative music, this is not for you.
If you do, this has to be in your collection. I would compare Terence with a Greg Brown or Chris Smither in sound and style.
I would love to hear him live. Keep recording, Terence, and I will keep buying.
Let's not be too breathless..........2003-09-08
...Anytime reviews compare some singer/songwriter to Dylan, it's intriguing, but inevitably does the guy no favors.
I checked out the album and Martin has some musicality. But his songs seem derivative, not authentic. Take "Bethlehem" -- it's almost as though he saw that David Gray had success with "Babylon," and Steve Earle with "Jerusalem," and figured, "Hey, Bible theme."
A friend said to listen to this guy. I'm rethinking the relationship.
good musicianship, derivative music.......2003-05-05
Well-crafted, but vaguely reminiscent of about 100 other folkies out there. Not much edge, but maybe that's not what to look for here. Would've worked well in "A Mighty Wind."
I can't stop listening to this.......2003-04-23
Well, when I got it (recommended by a friend) I thought, ok, some of the songs are cool, some aren't. But then the more I listened the more obsessed I became with Martin's music. Almost every song is amazing in its own way. I highly recommend this album. It's soulful, authentic and excellent.

This was some of the first bluegrass I've heard and still some of the best. I had a cassette copy that was recorded from the original LP. I've listened to it dozens of times driving around. Now I listen to blugrass regularly and still enjoy this album. All the songs are good. Some of the highlights are the songs from II Generation, The Stanley Brothers, and Jimmy Martin. II Generation has great instrumental solos and a driving base line throughout. New Joe Clark is the most dynamic blugrass song I've heard. It has three sections, the last one building into a rythmic frenzy. Pig in a Pen by the Stanley Brothers displays the lesser heard uptempo Stanley Brohters. Ralf is outstanding on the banjo. Jimmy Martin's live performance of Freeborn Man is the best recording of the song I've heard. I just recently saw Jimmy Martin in Madison and he still sounds as good as ever and has a remarkable sense of humor. Go see him if you have a chance. The only flaw I can find in this recording is the absence of Bill Monroe. Despite this, if you only buy one Blugrass album this is the one.
