2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Album Description

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Dean: Big Bad John .......2007-01-16

Loved the album. When I was young we had this record and I think that this is a compilation of at least two albums.

5 out of 5 stars Corny but fun.......2002-10-02

Generally speaking, former breakfast sausage king Jimmy Dean is a bit more commercial (and bland) a country artist than I tend to go for, but it can't be denied that his breakthrough hit, "Big Bad John" was a catchy little doozy. This disc includes plenty of lesser tunes, many of them, like "The Cajun Queen" and "Little Bitty Big John" were sequel tunes which barely recalled the grandeur of the original. There are also historical songs like the Kennedy-related "PT Boat 109" and corny recitations like "To A Sleeping Beauty" that are very much products of their time (circa 1961-62). This also includes Dean's somewhat peculiar political song, "Dear Ivan," an intriguing recitation tune that seems very sympathetic to the Russians... and this at the height of the Cold War! Honestly, I don't think Dean was a great talent, but he did have a nice string of hits 'way back when... If you want to check out his best material, I'd say this disc is the way to go, since Bear Family releases are always of the highest quality that can be found.

5 out of 5 stars An expanded version of a classic title.......2000-09-09

While the CD I previously reviewed was for the Sony budget CD entitled "Big Bad John and Other Fabulous Songs and Tales," this is my review of the Bear Family compilation entitled "Big Bad John." While this CD does have all of the songs on the CD I previously reviewed, this collection does have many of the singles A & B as well as the entire "Big Bad John and Other Fabulous Songs and Tales" album, although unlike the Sony disc, this CD does have the version of the title track that has a lyric that goes "at the bottom of the mine lies one hell of a man, Big John," rather than the lyric "at the bottom of the mine lies a big, big man" that was used on the Sony budget disc of the "Big Bad John..." album and also appears on Sony/Legacy's "Greatest Hits" CD. Because the extra songs on this disc are first rate, it's worth buying this CD if you can afford the cost. This disc only goes up to 1962 while the "Greatest Hits" collection goes up to 1966 and both CD's are a must have as his recordings do have great sound, they both have liner notes and great remastering, while this Bear Family CD does have a discography of songs he recorded in 1961-1962 in the booklet as well. Before I had this disc today, I long had the Sony budget CD which has just as great sound as this import but the extra songs do justify the cost of this disc very well to the point that I gave the Sony budget CD to a local radio station who has been playing the tracks off of the album ever since. A couple of the songs are previously unreleased on LP and they are just great and this disc is recommended to all Jimmy Dean fans who want more than what "Greatest Hits" offers, but "Greatest Hits" offers the basics and nothing else for those who only want the hits or those who are new to his music. This is for the people who are already fans just like myself.

5 out of 5 stars Another CD of Jimmy at his prime--as good as "Greatest Hits".......2000-02-04

This budget priced CD is a straight reissue of the album from 1961, yet it does have different cover art than the original LP. Every song on this album is a classic which makes this a must buy for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars I'm rediscovering the music my father listened to-I like it!.......1999-07-10

Back in the sixties when I was just becomming aware of what music was, my father listened to arists like Jimmy Dean, the New Christy Minstrels, the Kingston Trio, and others. No matter how wide musical tastes become, I think we all enjoy listening to the first sounds we remember as young people. And the musicians in those days were great story tellers and ballad singers. This album from Jimmy Dean is American folklore, history, and patriotism at its best.

1 out of 5 stars NOT CARPENTER'S ORIGINAL SCORE...IT'S A HACK JOB..........2005-12-04

What a piece of ****. Do not buy this worthless CD. If you are a fan of John Carpenter's scores, you will not like this. Don't waste your money like I did...And the only reason it got one star is because you can't give it any less!

1 out of 5 stars not for fans of carpenter's scores.......2004-12-03

like other reviewers said, this is someone else playing those classic carpenter tunes. sometimes it sounds like elevator music. unfortunately, the cover doesn't say anything about this piece of work...

1 out of 5 stars Essential what?.......2003-07-08

As the previous reviewer noted, nowhere on this CD does it indicate that the 'Essential John Carpenter' is someone re-recording all of the famous cues. Naturally all the info is on the inside.

And the disc? I don't see the point in bothering. They might as well make Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, and They Live (which pretty much don't have scores in print anymore) available again, even if they have to combine a couple to make one disc.

Carpenter does not use orchestras or elaborate bands for his scores. He does most of it himself and that makes another Carpenter collection simple. It's not difficult to play the notes, but everything is just slightly off and after a while you wonder what's the point.

This is NOT the music from the Carpenter films you love. This is someone playing that music. Assault on Precinct 13, which provides most of the attraction of this pretty worthless disc, sounds lousy and has none of the life of the throbbing synth of the original. Not only that, but they have the nerve to throw in two (2) cues from Starman, a Carpenter film that he didn't do his own music for(!) Instead the disc is broken by the Jerry Goldsmith pieces that sound NOTHING like anything Carpenter has done. It's bad--it belongs elsewhere, namely the Starman soundtrack which is still in print.

Stay away from this thing. It's a ripoff, another attempt to cash in on a name without providing any real product.

1 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS IMITATION GARBAGE!!!!! FAKE CARPENTER.......2003-06-25

These jerks did a great job hiding the fact that these tracks are re-recorded by some schlep. Avoid this lame piece of garbage at all costs. The tones are totally wrong, it sounds very little like the genius originals. I bought this to get some of the Assault on Precinct 13 stuff, and was horrified to find that everything had been re-recorded. THIS IS NOT MENTIONED ON THE OUTER PACKAGING IN ANY WAY!!! You would never know until you open it and read the liners. Shame on these bastards for trying to dupe and rip people off. AVOID THIS [STUFF]!!!

5 out of 5 stars "absolute in capturing the original scores".......2002-12-03

Hats off to Gareth Williams, James Fitzpatrick and Silva Screen Records for this venture into the world of John Carpenter. Silva has done a masterful job of recreating the feel of the original Carpenter film scores. This awesome compilation of "great thriller music" sends chills up our spines from composers Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzsche, Dave Davies, Alan Howarth and of course John Carpenter. Each selection is arranged and performed with plenty of suspense dating back to 1974, which gave the audience a supernatural and imaginative fright. Each score paints the mood for every cue, which writer, producer and director Carpenter required...and then some.

Each score takes on a life of its own away from the film. If you've never seen any of the films, your imagination plays a key role interpreting what our legendary director/composer has up his sleeve when writing and directing the music. Entire album is a stand out ~ this one's for Carpenter and Silva fans alike, a collection for the first time with tremendours power and immediacy of each cue can now be heard. With Dolby Digital Surround Sound Recordings...this is a must have for your collection. All "film-score-buffs" beware, this is guranteed to give your goosebumps on the very first track, gotta love it!
