If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24

If you love traditional Christmas music, done in traditional style (i.e., no rock or jazz influence), this CD is for you. The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."

The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09

This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.

However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!

A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28

I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.

The best.......2004-01-02

I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!

How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14

This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.

Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.

All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.

Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.

These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Travel back in time to an era when songs were created to enjoy like a rich desert that your mom would make. Howard Keel and his various duet partners have done just this! This CD has a wonderful selection from the great musicals of the 1950's and makes you smile....sigh....and seek to hear them again and again. I would encourage you to add this to your collection as I have. I've even shared it with many of my friends who have come back with the same remarks of great music from one of the great singers of our recent past.

An excellent album.......2004-02-22

On this album, Holly wrote or co-wrote half the songs but she also included covers of obscure Dolly and Tammy songs and a song that Joe Diffie co-wrote before he was a recording interest.

Three of the songs made the Milestones greatest hits compilation - Are you ever gonna love me (a song that Holly co-wrote), There goes my heart again (the Joe Diffie co-write - I don't think Joe actually recorded the song himself) and No one takes the train anymore.

Dolly wrote and recorded Most of all why - it originally appeared on her album, Seeker We used to. Gene Watson covered it for his album, Paper Rosie. Holly's cover, with Dolly on backing vocals, is excellent. There's no heart so strong was recorded by Tammy for her outstanding acoustic album, Higher ground.

Of the other songs, Holly wrote If I'd never loved you and co-wrote You're still keeping me up at night, the title track and Sometime today.

This is an excellent album from Holly, featuring a balanced mix of up-tempo songs and ballads. If you enjoy what you've heard of Holly's music, this album is well worth tracking down - if you can find it. If you are unfamiliar with her music, begin with Milestones, which ought to be simple to find, being still in print as I write this.

Spectacular Mantovani Music.......2004-09-20

This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. Decca's "Concert Spectacular" CD, never issued and rarely heard in the United States, teases the listener with a distinctive waltz time arrangement of the popular Sousa march, Stars and Stripes Forever. Many will shed a tear when they hear the cathedral sound of languorous strings and woodwinds in Danny Boy. This Concert Spectacular offers the listener a plethora of musical imagery. I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

Dean soundtrack melange has better version.......2005-08-16

The five cuts from EAST OF EDEN and the four cuts from REBEL were lifted directly from the film soundtrack music masters, but pressed onto lp and 45 rpm in mono only. The three pieces from GIANT are poor. These pieces had to be short in order to fit on 45 rpm formats as well as lp, so no more than 3.5 minutes from each cut could be recorded onto the vinyl pressings.

You can find all the music from EDEN and REBEL presented here plus lots more from both films' musical tracks in the album A TRIBUTE TO LEONARD ROSENMAN. John Adams conducts the London Sinfonietta, perfectly capturing the original orchestrations and tempi -it's like listening to the film's track, but in full stereo and you get lots more music for your money. Stick to that one and leave this one alone.

Really great movie music!.......2003-06-25

Without any doubt, James Dean is and will be one of the most remembered actors in a whole galaxy of movie stars.
Although his career covered only three feature movies, they still stand as classics, and so does the music!
For the first two features "East Of Eden" and "Rebel Without A Cause", the producers turned to Leonard Rosenman, who (although these were some of his first works) created outstanding scores for both.
While "East Of Eden", JD's first major movie, is an outstanding symphonic work (based on the never-forgotten main theme), "Rebel Without A Cause" includes more jazzy tones.
Warner-veteran Dimtri Tiomkin scored the final of the three features, "Giant". Although I regard all three scores among my favorite soundtracks, I think, "Giant" is the most outstanding. Tiomkin's variations of the three main themes (Giant, There Has Never Been Anyone Else But You, Jett Rink) are nostalgic treasures, nobody should miss! I can't wait, when they're finally going to release the entire score! The two cuts from ?Giant? included here are the ?Giant? theme and ?There Has Never Been Anyone Else But You?. These two tracks do not appear in the movie in this form, but were recorded to promote the film. As a bonus, the producers have added Mitch Miller?s ever-popular recording of ?The Yellow Rose Of Texas?.
Last, but not least, this album is the best possibility to get the soundtrack to these three great movies! Previous issues included drastical hiss and other noise or were taken directly from the music and effect track of the movies!
