Editorial Reviews
Roses name is one thats going to be added to the list of notable Canadian female vocalists soon.
Product Description
Add Rose Rangers name to the list that includes Sarah McLachlan, Nellie Furtado, Amanda Marshall and Canadas other reigning pop divas. Replies introduces a startlingly original, seductive new voice.
The Vancouver singer/songwriter is quickly gaining a buzz in the Canadian music scene. The Canadian Musician Magazine Song Contest winner released her debut album Replies in 2002 on her independent label Eclyptic Records.
Rose is a melodic songwriter, powerful guitar player and performer with an evocative, sexy-raspy voice. Her style can be compared to Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan. She has shared the stage with recording artist Chin Injeti (bass is base), Tom Landy (Paperboys), Mae Moore, Stephen Fearing (Blackie and The Rodeo Kings), Valdy and Shari Ulrich among others. Before turning to music, Rose studied acting and voice at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles and Capilano College in Vancouver. "I explored other arts, primarily dance and theatre before I found myself with music," Ranger explains. " I feel that music is the most powerful medium in our culture because it is a universal language. Music has the ability to move us into our hearts and out of our fears."

Legendary British theater critic Kenneth Tynan, one of the masterminds behind Oh! Calcutta!, described the show as "an evening of civilized erotic stimulation." Indeed, the revue--and its abundant full-frontal nudity--was an instant scandal when it opened in 1969. Along with Tynan, the creative team included Sam Shepard, John Lennon (who allegedly wrote "Four in Hand"), and co-composer Peter Schickele, well before he gained fame as P.D.Q. Bach. The title song neatly fits among '60s suggestive lounge, as well as later offerings such as the Vampyros Lesbos soundtrack. Some of the tracks ("Clarence & Mildred") are hopelessly dated in their raunchy daddy-o hipness, but a few stand-alone, delicious pop songs ("Sincere Replies," "Much Too Soon") will delight fans of such explorers as Brian Wilson, Beck, and Bertrand Burgalat. As a piece of musical theater, the show is so creaky that it may be impossible to stage ever again. Fans of eccentric pop music, on the other hand, will find plenty to enjoy here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Add Rose Ranger s name to the list that includes Sarah McLachlan, Nelly Furtado and Canada's other reigning female songcrafters. Replies (Pacific/Warner Music), Rose Ranger s debut CD, introduces a startlingly original, seductive, new voice. A seamless song cycle powered by producer Craig Zurba s polished studio magic, (Ranger is also credited for additional production.), Replies showcases the Vancouver singer-songwriter s pop-perfect, silky, soulful rasp. Zurba, who has added soundboard alchemy to recordings by Aaron Pritchett and Lisa Brokop contributes to Replies addictive, hook-driven mix on an assortment of instruments, joining a host of Vancouver stalwarts drawn from the city s vibrant jazz, blues and rock scenes... and Ranger does the rest. The young musician contributes an eclectic collection of originals plus a couple of smart remakes of hook-addled hits by Zurba s old band, Agent and the Australian pop band, Eurogliders. Some songs kick like a mule, and with Ranger s ranging vocals seem tailor-made for arena stages. Others ride Zurba s subtle arrangements and the whispered, emotive cries that punctuate Ranger s most stunning performances. Before turning to music, Ranger studied theatre at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles and with the Capilano College Theatre Company in Vancouver, and her vocals combine thoughtful, understatement and dramatic, soul-revealing power. I explored other arts, primarily dance and acting, but I've always had a passion for singing and writing, Ranger explains. I feel that music is the most powerful medium in our culture, because it is a universal language. Music has the ability to move us into our hearts and out of our fears. Besides Ranger s honest lyrics, brimming with a mixture of youthful idealism and sensual yearning and heartbreak, Replies has a wealth of brilliant ingredients: jazz masters Brad Turner and Tom Colclough s haunting horn work; Robbie Steininger s succinct, tasty guitar and
