Product Description
Somewhere between the jazzy, feel-good grooves of A Tribe Called Quest and the yin-yang chemistry of Outkast lies Little Brother. The Durham, NC trio make music that brilliantly splits the line between art and commercialism, all while maintaining their fun-loving hip-hop purist stance. The group's members; MC's Phonte and Big Pooh, along with DJ/producer 9th Wonder met in 1998 while attending North Carolina Central University. Within a few short months of recording, the trio had gathered enough songs to grab the attention of local music lovers, radio DJ's, and club promoters. The group received frequent spins on college radio. They regularly headlined at local venues and opened for national acts such as Tha Liks and Defari. When the group made its music available for download on the Internet, a substantial buzz built far outside of North Carolina, and it eventually earned them a deal with the Oakland-based ABB Records in 2002. In early 2003, Little Brother released its full-length debut, The Listening, which won widespread critical praise.Customer Reviews:
I Hope Everyone Is Listening To WJLR (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2007-03-28
Although LB is an excellent group, they do have flaws. Not too often 9th swithes up his drums, and it shows. There are some tracks that are skippable as well, such as "Groupie Pt 2". Also I wasn't feeling the track "Nobody But You" as well. Also the interludes got a little old, especially "Make Me Hot". Other than that, this album is highly enjoyable. Little Brother shows their versitality on this album. This album dropped in early '03, and it took me a while to find it because of the place I was residing at the time this album came out. This album didn't get distributed widely like other albums did. They dropped "The Minstruel Show" in '05 (which was a little overrated in my opinion). But anyway, If you like some head nodding hip hop tracks and dope lyrics, you will like this album.

If nothing else, North Carolina's Little Brother has gathered around it a very loyal fan base, one that sees the trio of Phonte, Big Pooh and produced 9th Wonder as the logical heirs of the Native Tongues Posse (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.) with their positive focus, jazzy, soulful sound and an anti-mainstream attitude. In that respect, the hype around them is reminiscent of what first greeted Slum Village in the late '90s though they've been more consistent than their Detroit colleagues. Yet, however likable their last album, The Listening and their latest are, the group are still an acquired flavor. To some, they turn out feel good, intelligent hip-hop for a more mature set. For others, they make throwback music that's pleasant enough but lacks punch otherwise. Phonte and Pooh sound solid throughout and 9th Wonder's much lauded production, while great in moments, can also drift into anemia too. An excess of skits is also a gamble with listener patience though the album's conceptual focus is a refreshing quality. For those who enjoyed Common's Be, this is better realized but musically, lacks the same depth. --Oliver WangAlbum Description
Touted as one of 2005's Top 10 Most Anticipated albums by XXL Magazine, Little Brother's latest masterpiece is reminiscent of the days when Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and others carefully crafted complete experiences from beginning to end. The North Carolina outfit made up of MC's Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh, and super producer 9th Wonder have truly made an album that is both thought provoking and humorous. The Minstrel Show is truly one great piece of hip hip that will stand the test of time.Customer Reviews:
So Refreshing.......2007-07-09
Little Brother is still considered an under group because a lot of people have never heard of them. They make good music. They remind me of a new A Tribe Called Quest. If you want to listen to something different, The Minstrel Show is the album for you. Little Brother made a complete album and it deserves your support.
Organic hip-hop... So delicious!.......2007-07-09
I can't remember who or what alerted me to them but I've been meaning to get the three Little Brother CDs for some time now. They've been on my wishlist since 2005 in fact but it was after Phonte rhymed on three recent very enjoyable albums by three acts I genuinely love and respect - Donnie's Daily News, Eric Roberson's ...Left and 4hero's Play with the Changes - that I knew I had to get them now. I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said by the 140 people who've reviewed this album before me except to say this: It's impossible to pick favourite tunes as each one is just so exceptionally enjoyable but two parts of the album worth a mention include "Cheatin", where one of the dudes takes on the persona of soul singer 'Percy Miracles' for a spoof soul song. Think the Wayans Brothers doing the Isley Brothers, (if they could sing. And if they were actually funny). And then there's the skit "Diary Of A Mad Daddy" which follows on at the end of "Lovin' It" co-starring Joe Scudda, where a man chastises his son Cornell for watching what he refers to as "that ignorant a** s**t" and for watching what he calls those "damned Minstrel Show ni***s" and then goes on to be just as ignorant if not more so than anyone on any TV programme could ever be. If these guys are being ironic - and I think they are - then they're being incredibly skilful at it.
This is hip-hop at its most organic; just a couple of MCs rapping over breakbeats from tunes they know and love. Listen to the lyrics and read the inner-sleeve notes, and you soon realise that these brothers are intelligent, talented, very observant and possess a great sense of humour. I can't wait to get their two other CDs now. The only slight concern is the high level of profanity. N-word this, n-word that; f-word this, f-word that. It doesn't bother me too much but I know people that it would bother. I was afraid that my good friend Derek might not be able to enjoy the delicious music on offer here for instance, due to the colourful language. Lucky then that there's a clean version available. My friend will surely be happy to hear that.

Over-Rated, Please listen before you buy... .......2007-04-08
I've got to say, very similar to Common's lauded BE album, this is a lot of praise with very little substance to back it up. I definitely appreciate satire, and hip-hop that is about countering the mainstream interest in stereotypes as gospel, and ignorance as grace.
That said I think this album is satire-light, and doesn't do it very well, or very interestingly. I like TRIBE CALLED QUEST and DE LA SOUL, and these guys, with this album... are not even close. The music for the most part, is forgettable at best.
The exception, being the simply hillarious parody song CHEATIN', and that alone earns this album three stars.
Your mileage may vary, but I have to agree with reviewers Quinlan, Without Bias, and Constant [Viper is a shill and his views obviously not to be trusted (only a moron would dismiss PARIS), and typically anything he hates you should rush out and buy. He's on the payroll of the guys feeding Gansta garbage to our communities, so honestly you can view any of his negative comments as a glaring recommendation, I always do. And anything he recommends I avoid. However in this one case, the CD is actually not one I can recommend].
This CD is average at best, and you should listen before you buy. You would be better off with anything by ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, especially 3 YEARS or for conscious hip-hop try anything by PARIS or IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE.
You Are Watching U.B.N. {4 Stars}.......2007-04-06
As far as flaws go, some of the production can be repetitive after a few listens. They aren't necessarily poor beats because I think 9th is a very solid beatsmith, but some of the lyrics didn't grab me and, therefore, were unable to hold my attention. I guess what I'm saying is some of the tracks were boring. I personally found "Say It Again", "Watch Me", and "We Got Now" to be skip material. I also found Pooh's arrogance bothersome. You know, the whole "you better love us now before we blow up and forget y'all" attitude can be annoying -- especially when it's coming from just an okay rapper.
The Minstrel Show is dope release from LB. I don't know if I'd go as far as to call it a classic like many are doing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. With 9th Wonder leaving the group, there's a good chance that this will be the last LB album from this trio turned duo. For that reason I recommend adding this to your music library. I'm curious as to how their next album will sound though. You can check out their mixtape with Cleveland DJ Mick Boogie entitled "And Justus For All..." if you want a taste.

Album Description
OPERA IS FOR EVERYONE and so, The Classical Child At the Opera was created to give children a taste of the magic, majesty and humor of this glorious art form. Well-known songs and arias have been selected that appeal to young sensibilities, while easy-to-follow English translations bring these delightful stories and characters to life. Care has been taken by the singers to present the music in a way that is light hearted and accessible sometimes gentle, sometimes raucous, but always positive and engaging.Customer Reviews:

As much as I enjoy this album, I question the inclusion of the last three songs, which come from "Hansel and Gretel". The voices on the songs are of the overly florid nature, and I can see my daughter lose interest. I think it would have been more interesting to include more "Carmen," or arias from other such popular operas "Rigoletto" or "Aida". Or if the album needed to end on a slower note, the overcoat song from "La Boheme."
IAC, I have caught my daughter humming bits and pieces from the operas. Even I have managed to amaze people by correctly identifying the Flower Duet from "Lakme"! I strongly recommend this album.

In an era where "Laffy Taffy" is a number one rap song (what the f*ck), and riding on regular sized rims and tires is damn near obsolete, North Carolina's own Little Brother comes back to toss in their bid as one of hip hop's best kept secrets.
From their lyrics on Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor II", to the Okayplayer compilation, and most recently on The Minstrel Show" and "Seperate but Equal" with DJ Drama, LB has been putting in work. The Chittlin Circuit 1.5 is definitely a must have for anyone considers themselves a fan of good hip hop music. I am an LB fan to the dirt, but I did what a lot of true fans did, I bought the albums out of sequence. Fortunately with this group, it doesn't really matter, as all the material is sick. To me, the standout track on this album is "The Beginning". Yeah, the legend Big Daddy Kane is on the album, "Welcome to Durham" but I didnt cop the album to hear him on it. Illmind kills the sample and the drums on this joint, Pooh and Tay high step on the joint, and songstress Yazarah peppers the track with her soulful vocals. Perfect mix of samples, rhymes, and vocals. Young Guru switches his engineer hat for an excellent fitting producer brim on "Ladies Jam". Another excellent use of a warped voice sample in the background as Phontigga and Rapper Pooh parallel park on the track as only the greatest can do. This is actually the last LB offering I purchased (except for Seperate But Equal), but it is definitely a must have. 9th Wonder and Khrysis are musical marvels, placing their head-nodding rythms ever so gracfully under Pooh and Tay's vocals. Perfect marriage of Beats and Rhymes.
****As a sidenote, go get "Seperate But Equal", "The Minstrel Show", "Connected" (Phonte and Dutch producer Nicolay) "Triple Play" (Pooh, and Justus League Members L.E.G.A.C.Y and The Away Team) and for you futhermuckers that think you can rhyme, get the 9th Wonder instrumental tape series.****
Great way to prime the pallet for The Minstrel Show (4.5 stars).......2006-08-07

This is a formidable collection of lullabies, spanning 500 years, 18 of them (from almost as many countries) in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Catalan, English, and more, each one lovely, each one in its own idiom. Some are anonymous; others are by composers as different as Byrd, Mussorgsky, Milhaud, and Arvo Pärt. The disc shouldn't be listened to in one setting--no matter how interesting they are, they're still lullabies and can mellow the listener into torpor--but in three-or-so chunks, the contents are fascinating. Figueras can make her sound move from folk to classical, from a mother who is passionate about her child's safety to one who merely wants to entertain into slumber. The anonymous Greek lullaby (track 3) contains the oddest little vocal quirk--a whipping up of the tone at the close of some phrases--which only an artist like Figueras could pull off. And Savall and soloists accompany on various instruments--flute, harp, viols, etc.--with pianist Paul Badura-Skoda playing on three of the lullabies. The CD is a wonderful tour of the world through the centuries with only one subject in mind: sleep. And sleep is something, after all, that takes up a third of our lives. This CD keeps getting sweeter the more you listen. Recommended. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
An exquisite gem of a desert island CD.......2005-06-09
What gives this CD its magic is the fact that this is music making amongst friends and family. In fact the record label is Jordi Savall's own, Monserat Figueras is his wife, and Arianna Savall his daughter - so it really is an all family affair. The whole of Hesperion XXI play like they know each other intimately and we are just privileged eavesdroppers who were lucky enough to have overheard them. If some of the major record labels are increasingly marketing their music like MacDonalds hamburgers then this is like being invited to dine at a lovely family run Spanish restaurant. There is a heartwarming homeliness here the majors could never emulate in a hundred years. So it is entirely appropriate that this should be a collection of lullabies, for this is a celebration of family intimacy of the most deeply poetic and affectionate kind.
The selection of music might strike a casual listener as being unusual - exotic is a better term - yet they are all so instantly attractive that I think this would make a lovely gift (especially given the beautiful booklet that comes with it) to a child, a mother, a partner, a friend, a music lover; even people who know nothing about the composers here would surely be enchanted. I was particularly delighted by the reviewer who wrote that her daughter listened to this at night - oh, how fortunate it would be to grow up with music like this with its imaginatively chosen collection of music from so many countries and centuries - you would carry this music in your heart for the rest of your life! Amongst the songs is a Greek song, a Catalan song, a 16th century English song, a song by William Byrd, Max Reger, Moussorgsky as well as two by Arvo Part, both of which carry dedications to Monserat Figueras, Arianna and Jordi Savall (in the photograph reproductions of the first pages of the handwritten score Arvo Part has written in German 'gewidmet an...' if you were wondering where this info comes from).
Typical of the CD is how difficult it is to hold back a tear listening to Reger of all composers - I would have never thought it possible, especially when it would have been simply all too easy to choose some all to well known Schubert Lied, but here it is, they have picked Reger and it is PERFECT. Yet that is only one gem amongst so many more here. I am speechless, for this CD is indeed a rare treasure made for people who truly love beautiful music making - a CD to cherish and to weep for joy over.
I should add that as usual from Vox Alia the recorded sound is audiophile quality, and a notch above what you get from about 95% of record labels. In my opinion they even surpass some boutique audiophile labels like Linn, which is really saying something. So if you love to luxuriate in rich sound this will fit like a glove.
If you fall in love with this recording please, please may I suggest you BUY it for someone you love, rather than burning it, just as a way of saying 'thank you' to this family of musicians. This is a family run label rather than some huge impersonal coorporation and I have seen too many private boutique record firms go bust over the years, so please help ensure that these artists continue to make lovely recordings such as this one.
I am adding this CD to my desert island collection.
Sweeping, seductive, and superlative!.......2004-01-14
What is most clearly manifest in this musical anthology is Figueras' professionalism and her Catalan background. Unlike the operatic divas who have deigned to release popular renditions, she demonstrates how someone who truly understands the music of mountain villages or plains communities in any nation can elevate even the most "common" music. The selections range over five centuries or more, reinforcing the impression that nothing exceeds the capacity of her elegant voice to convey feeling to the enraptured listener. Each of us will likely settle on a favourite selection. Predictably, my own is a Catalan piece of an anonymous composer. Perhaps because the lullaby is in her native tongue, the richness of Figueras' rendition evokes intense emotional response. Would that i'd been born a Catalan!
Alia Vox was launched to give fresh impetus to the recordings of Figueras, her husband Jordi Savall and the groups they have created together. This CD will remain a testimony to their efforts to produce the highest quality discs. The sound is excellent, clearly imparting voice and background instruments alike. With 18 selections from a variety of eras and locations, the notes for this CD are extensive. The text of each tune is given in the original and seven other languages. Could scholarship and the universality of music be given finer endorsement? [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
Mesmerizing music for the heart.......2003-10-18
Lullabies in this collection, come from cultural backgrounds as diverse as Russia, Morocco, Greece, England and, of course, the Iberian Peninsula. They span from the Renaissance to contemporary music. Most of the musical versions have been masterly arranged by Jordi Savall, suited to fit the extraordinary voice of his wife. We also find some arrangements by well-known composers such as Moussorgski, Reger or de Falla.
Being lullabies, the songs show similarities: above all their tunes are beautifully soft and melodious. Yet, the tunes show considerable diversity in rhythm and tonality. Some are melancholy and almost haunting, others joyful and jubilant. Montserrat Figueras' voice is, as always, in a class of her own, radiating with richness and intensity. The music touches the deeper cords in the listener's consciousness. Her voice is superbly and sensitively accompanied by Hesperion XXI, the accomplished team of musicians under the leadership of Jordi Savall.
The informative booklet accompanying the CD is well presented and includes the songs' texts in eight languages, including the original. This is a CD you will not get tired to listen to many times, whether you play it for your children, your family and friends, or just for yourself. [Friederike Knabe, Ottawa, Canada]
La Ninna Nanna.......2003-08-17
"Stunningly beautiful" is an understatement.......2003-05-31
This disc is really a family affair: Figueras and Savall, plus their daughter who also sings and plays, and their son who took the photos; plus their friends and colleagues, among the most imaginative and soulful players alive. Extraordinary. And the new music composed by Arvo Part for this album: it's proof that music can objectively make a person weep.
And the booklet: a gorgeous presentation with full background information, photos of the sessions, and each song is given in translation to eight or nine languages! (The original, plus eight more translations if different.)
The only thing you can't do is play this in the car, while driving around to lull the child with the motion. Oh, that works great for the child, but it's the driver's concentration we should be worried about. There is no way to keep one's mind safely on the road while this CD is on.
I rarely give a "five star" rating to anything, but this is one of those times.

A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17
Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.
Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22
Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02
Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.
Highly recommended.

Standout Tracks: All For You, Hiding Place feat. Elzhi, Lovin' It feat. Joe Scudda (My Favorite), The Becoming, Beautiful Morning, Slow It Down feat. Darien Brockintgon, Cheatin', Still Lives Through, and Not Enough feat. Darien Brockington
Tune Into The Minstrel Show Live On UBN (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-03-28
Big Rapper Pooh and Phonte do a good job pulling their weight on the vocals as well. "Not Enough" is one of the best tracks that I've heard from them, lyrically. "All For You" and "Still Lives Through" (their version of ATCQ's "God Still Lives Through") are dope songs as well. Even Phonte's alter ego Percy Miracles sings on "Cheating", a remake of one of a recent Isley Brother's song. There is very little inferior moments on their behalf.
Guest appearances are good as well. Slum Village's Elhzi appears on "Hiding Place". Joe Scudda does a decent job on "Lovin' It". And Chaundon drops a dope verse on the show's encore track "We Got Now".
Overall, this album is great. It ranks along "The Listening" that dropped back in '03. The majority of this album is on point, and this trio has shown improvemnt. If you like hip hop with a great concept and dope beat and dope lyrics, this album should be in your collection. Just like Phonte said in the beginning of the song "Not Enough", "...dope beats, dope rhymes. This hip hop ain't really that hard."

Little By Little.......2006-10-27
Great Single.......2004-04-14
Little by Little is a fantastic song. It's one of the top 5 songs off the Heathan Chemistry album and I'd put it their top 20 songs they've ever done. Noel once again puts a lot of emotion and feeling into the song. This is also one of the songs that Noel sings.
She is Love is another good song. I believe Noel wrote this one for his girlfriend, but I'm not 100% sure. If you'd listen to the lyrics it sure does sound like it. Noel also sings this one.
My Generation is a great cover. It's equal to the version sung by The Who. Oasis played this one a lot on their last tour and this is the only place to get it.
This single isn't a required one to get. I have it because I'm obsessed with this band and I think they are the greatest. Unless you collect Oasis like I do there really isn't a reason to pick this album up unless you want My Generation that bad. Go get Heathan Chemistry and enjoy all the songs off it.
really beautiful tunes.......2003-01-05
She Is Love is another Noel song. This one is a dreamy love song with amazing lyrics and handclaps that come on near the end of the song giving it an edgy feel.
Two beautiful Oasis songs released as A-sides. What more do you ask for?
If you enjoy this, i recommend you purchasing Heathen Chemistry.
The Genius of Noel Gallagher.......2002-12-24
Third Single off of "Heathen Chemistry" is Just Average.......2002-11-15
Both "Little by Little" and "She is Love" are Noel-penned and sung, and are average MOR ballads, at best. A much better choice for single IMHO would have been "Born on a Different Cloud", one of the album's best songs (it also would be the first Liam-written song to chart on its own). The redeeming track on this single is Oasis' take on The Who's "My Generation", which has been part of Oasis' live set the past year.
For those that already have the album, no need to buy this single, unless you just can't live without having "My Generation". For those that don't have the album, don't buy this single but buy the album instead!
