Music that Keeps!.......2006-10-04

Greg Johnson's latest CD is an absolute gem. It's been a long time since I've come across an album where I enjoy listening to all the songs, without getting bored. The arrangements are simple but varied and appealing, and I particularly enjoy the (acoustic) sound of Johnson's piano playing. These are inspired songs, with words that capture much of what we thirty and forty somethings think and feel. It's like Greg is one of us - I've been listening to "Here Comes the Caviar" regularly over the past six months and I'm still not tired of it. If you enjoy the music of people like Elton John and Billy Joel (the sort of stuff I grew up on), you'll enjoy this album.

New Look, Same Great Sound........2007-06-26

In the first release as the current 4 members, Tonic Sol-fa made a giant splash. This CD is one of their finest showcasing their writing, arranging and singing talents all in one place. There are songs that are a cappella lover's dreams, songs that rock, and songs that pull at your heart strings. While all their CD's are amazing, this CD is a definite can't miss!

Vocal Magic.......2005-08-12

This band is one of the finest vocal bands I have ever heard. If they had been around in the 1950's in Brooklyn, we would be hearing them being mentioned in the same breath as Dion and the Belmonts and all the other great vocal groups of the time.

I was first introduced to them by A Prarie Home Companion. They were there because of their new disc "From Boston to Bejing" (buy that one NOW, too). Their voices were made to sing together; their arrangements are just about perfect, and the only problem I have with this disc is that it is far too short!

All the songs are geat, but there are three stand out trax; Eleanor Rigby, Man of Constant Sorrow, and Oklahoma Wind.

If there was any justice in the music business, this band would be a household name.

I have heard this group perform three of four times. The are incredible. Fantastic sound especially with no instruments. It is hard to believe!! Excellent live shows. Gereat energy. Their CD are wonderful. Buy them and give them to your friends.

Tonic for your soul.......2004-08-24

I discovered Tonic Sol-Fa by accident at the state fair last week. I hadn't been to the fair in several years, but some friends of mine from out of town talked me into going. Then, looking only for a place to sit down and eat, we happened upon the public stage where this excellent group was playing. Wow. What a great sound, totally unlike anything else out there. We were all hooked from the first note. They were performing Eleanor Rigby when we first walked up, then jumped into Man Of Constant Sorrow---a tune I've loved ever since I saw O Brother Where Art Thou, & now have a favorite version of thanks to T.S. After that none of us wanted to leave. Tonic Sol-Fa is awesome, unique, and have a sound people of all ages seem to just love. The crowd was going wild. Do yourself a favor and check out this remarkable talent for yourself. I never thought I was a fan of A cappella before, but now I may have to rethink my views, certainly at least where Tonic Sol-Fa is concerned. As we sat there listening happily, it actually took me 3 or 4 songs to even realize the only instrument they were playing was a single tambourine. Simply amazing. Highly recommended. If you ever get the chance to see them live, by all means go for it, but don't cheat yourself by waiting when they have CD's available. I've been a fan of Tonic Sol Fa for over 10 years. They just keep getting better and better. If you don't have this CD you should. Check out their other ones too.

EVER WONDER WHAT GREG BROWN SONGS WOULD SOUND LIKE IF SOMEONE WHO COULD SING SANG THEM...WONDER NO MORE PRUDENCE FULFILLS THAT WONDER HERE...THE SONGS ARE JUST FABOLOUS SONGS AND TO PUT A VOICE WITH THEM ALL FACETS OF THE EQUATION ARE NOW SATISFIED..THANK YOU GREG BROWN FOR WRITING THEM AND THANK YOU EVEN MORE TO PRUDENCE FOR SINGING THEM IN SUCH A FINE WAY.

High potential cut a little short by vocal range.......1999-08-22

Prudence's voice is lovely and flexible on most of this fine disc, but she lacks the lower range for the bluesier numbers "Just a Bum" and "Who Woulda Thunk It," leaving an odd empty space which Brown would have filled with his quavering baritone. This probably could have been corrected by thickening and sharpening the drum and bass sound on these two tracks. Again, though, the rest of the disc is sometimes fabulous, especially her unhurried renditions of "Wash My Eyes" and "The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home." The entire band performance is also commendable, notably the pithy contributions from Dean Magraw and Peter Ostroushko.

Pure delight.......1999-04-16

Greg Brown, probably the premiere folksinger in the Midwest, has a wonderful dark whisky voice, but it's a delightful surprise to get the chance to hear his songs performed via Prudence Johnson's crystalline tones. Prudence is a sometimes co-performer of Greg's, and (like many of us) an almost reverential fan, and this terrific disc superbly shows Brown's genius for songwriting. I almost like her renditions of "Just a Bum" and "Band of Gold" better than Greg's!

A Small Gem.......1999-02-03

A very strong selection of Greg Brown's songs that Johnson's clear, expressive vocals swing beautifully. Don't overlook this one.
