It's not often you use the word "clever" to describe country music--especially in 1998--but Chris Wall will change all of that. Wall's songs are thoughtful, provocative, and often delightfully sarcastic, but never contrived or pretentious. What's more amazing is how he can meld his lyrics to fit rousing honky-tonk and mature country-flavored ballads. Tainted Angel also markedly benefits from the support of fellow Austinites Reckless Kelly, who can be delicate and tasteful or muscular and urgent. Wall borrows equally from the Texas traditions of honky-tonk posture and progressive outlaw poetry, and his worn baritone is a suitable vehicle for his lyrical might. If you like texas country music-make sure you listen to this cd its one of my favorite when Im out on the open highway or riding my horse with my cd player

Chris Wall has found his place as a great tale-teller........1999-06-20

Through each of his previous albums, Chris Wall was feeling his way toward finding the heart of his gift--the great story well told. In "Tainted Angel" he has achieved that. Each song here is a novel of the classic country genre: the angst of living life in the wrong century, of having insights in the world of the emotionally blind. Wall's work requires serious consideration on the same level as John Prine, Guy Clark, and John Stewart.

Wonderful!.......2000-12-20

Chris is an amazing, wry songwriter with a dark smoky full voice. I think I like the "No Sweat" CD a little better than this one, but this one showcases Wall's voice more. I highly recommend this CD even for people who don't typically enjoy country music. The lyrics and performance value transcend the limitations of the genre.

Genius.......2000-12-01

Chris is a great performer. But he's a genius songwriter. And I'd say this CD, with Three Across, God's Own Jukebox, I Never Got Over, is his best. Buy it.

Good but not his best.......2000-08-24

This is a good album, two of Chris' best songs are on here. "Three Across" will remind you of the girl you wanted in high school, but she was dating your best friend. "Half of What Killed Elvis" also has very clever lyrics. Overall, I'd say "Cowboy Nation" and his live CD are both better than this one, but I'd still recommend this one.
