Editorial Reviews

With an impressive roster from the country-music spectrum, the Nashville CD of music inspired by Prince of Egypt works as a compilation itself, if not as a compendium of the film. Fortunately, with a couple of exceptions, the producers steered away from "country pop" acts and concentrated on vocal talents like Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, and Wynonna. Wynonna's "Freedom" is a pleasant gospel workout, and Krauss's folky "I Give You to His Heart" is perhaps the compilation's best track, though Charlie Daniels's "Could It Be Me" is an upbeat frolic that actually has more of a feel for the film than any other track on the disc. "Make It Through" is a nicely written song, but Randy Travis isn't the man to sing it--his slow vocals seem outmatched by the upbeat song, and there isn't much flow. A handful of the tracks are overly sentimental, but, for the most part, this is a pleasant listen. --Aaron Tassano

Entertainment Weekly
It's not accidental that the best numbers echo the Moses story--particularly Alison Krauss' tender "I Give You to His Heart" and Beth Nielsen Chapman's gorgeous "Godspeed."...

It should be little surprise that of the three Prince of Egypt CDs, this one, which contains music actually used in the picture, is the best. The disc features songs written by Academy Award winners Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer. It also showcases the always impressive vocal talents of Ofra Haza on several tracks. The disc also crams in a few singles--ranging from the solid Boyz II Men track "I Will Get There" to the average "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to the dismal "Through Heaven's Eyes," by K-Ci & JoJo. But ultimately, Haza steals the show on tracks like "Cry" and the gorgeous "Deliver Us," performed with Eden Riegel. Other standouts include "Playing with the Big Boys," by Steve Martin and Martin Short, and a pleasant, if not unexpected, vocal by Michelle Pfeiffer on "When You Believe." --Aaron Tassano

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music!.......2007-06-11

My 3 1/2 year old after watching the movie fell in love with the songs. She asks for me to play the CD for her almost daily. She enjoys singing to it. I enjoy being reminded that God is still fighting for us in our darkest moments.

5 out of 5 stars Prince of Egypt music cd........2007-05-30

The Prince of Egypt soundtrack is pure gold. Almost every song is homerun. We've listened to this disk many times and it never gets old. Keep in mind that several of the songs express powerful religious themes.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-02-01

This Soundtrack appeals to both me and my 7 year old daughter as well as my teenage neices. The music is powerful and beautiful. A permanent addition to my music collection.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-12

Our 4 yr. old daughter watches this movie all the time, and it was great to get the cd so we could listen to it elsewhere. The music is awesome and it also has the lyrics inside, bonus. Great buy

4 out of 5 stars Great Music--but Sound Levels Need Adjusting.......2007-01-09

My whole family loves this CD. Unfortunately we have to turn the stereo way up to hear the songs at the right level--and portions of some songs are still hard to hear. If I had bought locally I would have returned this CD for a replacement.

Since Prince of Egypt is the story of Moses, an inspirational "inspired" soundtrack would seem like more of a natural extension of the film than the Nashville segment might. Several tracks stand out: "Power," by Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ, has a nice, traditional gospel flavor, as do three interspersed interludes known as "Most High." "God Will Take Care of Me" and "I Am," by Donnie McClurkin, both have a cinematic flare that could have fit in the film. Unfortunately, the compilation gets dragged down by some run-of-the-mill Christian pop: "Didn't I," by the creatively named Christian; "As Long As You're with Me," by the confusingly named Trin-i-tee 5:7; and "Everything in Between," by Jars of Clay. --Aaron Tassano

4 out of 5 stars The Prince of Egypt.......2007-02-04

The C D was very good, however, I thought it would include more songs. The price for the out-dated C D was a bit much, but that is that and the loss is yours because you will probably not get any more of my business. Thank you for asking.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-01-09

Had high expectations after reading other reviews. Listen before you buy this one--especially if you don't prefer Gospel music.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2006-11-06

In my humble opinion, this CD is excellent. Since the theme of the movie was the life of Moses, to me as a christian, it was very emotional to listen to every song that was inspired by the movie. I Love it. I do recomend it. Every song, every verse, every word, excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone's entitled to an opinion..........2004-04-12

I believe that only "true" music lovers could appreciate this work. Most people get ensnared in the box of their own preferred selections. I suppose we all do sometime. Nonetheless, I found the entire work enjoyable. I'm a little disappointed of others views concerning the interludes. For me, I found all three segments of the interludes to be heavenly majestic. It actually gave me a desire to worship. However, that's just me. Overall, great performance by all of the artists...

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Songs That Should Been the Original Sountrack.......2003-05-26

This is one of the best versions of "The Prince of Egypt" soundtrack. Since it's not the original soundtrack for the movie but ought to be. All these songs are so right on! When you got Take 6, CeCe Winans, Trin-I-Tee, Christian, Brian McKnight, Jars of Clay, dcTalk and Shirley Caesar. This is some of the best R&B, Southern Gospel and Contemporary Christian on the album. It's fitting that each song follows the story of Moses from his 'Destiny' (sung by Take 6). From the time he was hidden from the Pharoah decree and set upon 'The River' (sung by CeCe Winans) by his mother to save him. God was with Moses from his time in Egypt as the Prince and to his journey into the Desert to meet His God and deliver His People from slavery. Moses would say, 'As Long As You're With Me' (sung by Trin-I-Tee). Didn't God say What He'd do? He said, 'Didn't I' (sung by Christian). The rythym and the harmonies keep you swingin' to the beat. From the uplifting melodies and the spirit-filled hymns. This isn't dull or ever slow. Not your run-of-the-mill stuff. The Most High Interludes are very traditional. Believe me this is one inspirational album that won't gather dust. for country music lovers there is a Nashville version of this soundtrack. Only one thing missing on this album is if they only added the signature song, 'When You Believe' by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey from the original soundtrack. Guess I'm wishing too much :).

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL.......2005-05-11

I can't believe that none of these songs were ever on the radio. Now I am a young African-American woman, the first time I heard this cd I fell in love with country music. I would recommend anyone to buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is astonishing.......2005-01-15

I used the Faith Hill song "Somewhere down the road" for my infant daughters funeral who was born stillborn. We love the whole CD.

5 out of 5 stars The songs are terrific.......2004-07-27

I had an opportunity to purchase this CD while on vacation in Nashville, and it's fabulous. I listen to it over and over and never tire of it. Since I didn't see the movie, I don't know how this collection stacks up to the original sound track, but it really doesn't matter -- I like pop/country and all the songs are great and well performed!

3 out of 5 stars Somewhere Down The Road - Grant's is better than Faith's.......2003-10-25

If you like Somewhere Down The Road on here, you should check out Amy Grant's version... Grant sang it first and co-wrote it, it's on her "Behind The Eyes" album, and was released on Christian radio as a single back in '97. Faith's is pretty good, but a bit overdone and oversung, Grant's is perfect, check it out! Faith also sang another song that Amy wrote, although I'm not sure what it is.

5 out of 5 stars A fine soundtrack album.......2003-03-31

Three different soundtrack albums were released for the movie Prince of Egypt, so although I did not see it, I guess that there was a lot of music in it. This soundtrack focuses on the country recordings, showcasing many different aspects of country music as it was at the time. Although (as far as I know) all songs were specially recorded for the album, some have since appeared on individual albums by the artists.

If you are familiar with any of the featured singers, you will not be surprised at anything here, as each of them adopts their usual style. Your favorite tracks are therefore likely to depend on who your favorite singers are. I particularly like the duet featuring Randy Travis and Linda Davis and the tracks featuring Alison Krauss, Pam Tillis, Vince Gill and Reba McEntire, but every track is wonderful.

This album also marked the recording debut of Jessica Andrews. Her song, I will be there for you, was one of the singles from the album and was also included in her own debut album, Heart shaped world. All the other artists were already established names.

This is a very interesting soundtrack, well worth tracking down.

5 out of 5 stars Two of pop music's icons together for love and hope.......2006-05-21

Stop comparing Mariah with Whitney! They are both beautiful singers and they have done something wonderful and historic with this song. Listen to the message of this song...'there can be miracles when you believe...though hope is frail, it's hard to kill'. No other singers around this time were releasing songs of this nature; Songs that sing of hope and peace. What is even more important is that Disney brought together two of the most influential pop icons who have always been singing of hope, love and peace [The Greatest Love of All (WH) and Hero (MC)]to sing this wonderful piece and the most people can do is to compare singers and create ugliness where beauty was the sole intention. I would invite everyone to listn to this song, read the lyrics, and may the light of love, hope and peace shine on you.

I was so thrilled when I heard this song for the first time in December 1998. This song has a similar direction as 'We are the world' which was recorded years ago and by more leaders in the pop music industry. People, let's cherish positive examples like this one demonstrated by Whitney and Mariah and stop breaking it down with cheap insensitve remarks. Spread peace, love and hope - not hate.

5 out of 5 stars When You Believe.......2005-12-25

People keep saying Whitney Houston has a stronger voice, more steady more soulful voice, but it isnt entirely true. Mariah's voice in this song is weaker, but it shows her ability to use different dramatic effects during the song. She uses a softer whipsery voice in the verse, and belts out the chorus to reflect on the contrasts. It isnt cuz she cant sing strongly, but she's trying to convey meaning other than the lyrics. Whitney Houston's performance is well done, and soulful but it doesnt have the depth of Mariah's. Plus, mariah's melismas, ornaments and falsetto "oooooo" at the end is wat makes the song so powerful. Whitney has never been able to and will never sing as high and as well as Mariah, however we're talking about the strongest female vocalists of all time here. A job well done.

4 out of 5 stars Review: When You Believe.......2005-10-12

"When You Believe" is probably the only original soundtrack I like apart from the "Titanic" song by Celine Dion. The most surprising thing about this track is that unlike Titanic is features not one but two of the world most famous Divas namely Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. This will definitely be cherished by fans of both Carey and Houston. The Oscar winnng soundtrack has done a marvelous job of potraying the vocals of both the multi-octave singers. "When You Believe" is a track worth hearing but a warning to those who donot enjoy ballads: this track is a typical ballad and is mostly vocal. I hope this review helped you and pleasant shopping.

5 out of 5 stars There Can Be Miracles When You Believe!!.......2005-07-10

When You Believe features my favorite singer of all time, Mariah Carey!!! Mariah is so incredible on this ballad which is from The Prince Of Egypt. It is a duet with Whitney Houston who I also love but NO ONE could ever reach the heights Mariah reaches!!! Mariah has the most incredible, breathtaking voice in the world and will always be the best!!!

5 out of 5 stars Whitney Houston featuring Mariah Carey.......2005-07-02

Whitney gives an incredible performance on this song, one of my favourites of all time. Definitely my favourite song ever to come from a Disney movie. Having two of the strongest diva's in the industry, however, makes it a little overbearing at some points, but overall it's a great song.

      5 out of 5 stars A tender, luscious L'enfant du Christ.......2006-12-10

It's strangely rare to encoutner performances of French masterpieces actualy performed by French forces. Berlioz's sweet and gentle retelling of the birth of Jesus has been recorded twice by Colin Davis (the first one, on Decca, being the best) and by another Englishman, Matthew Best, whose smaller-scale reading is just as good, although it features no star vocalists. For the most excitable rendition, one can turn to Charles Munch and the BSO, a first-rate performance in every regard except the amateur chorus.

If you want the true Gallic timbre, however, which is always special in Berlioz, there's this highly appealing set from Andre Cluytens and the Paris Conservatoire orchestra. True, two of the major solo parts are sung by international opera stars--Victoria de los Angeles as Mary and Nicolai Gedda as the narrator. But both are so heart-warming that it's hard to complain, and they are surrounded by a Parisian chorus adding the perfect inflections to their parts, as well as two notable French baritones, Roger Soyer and Jules Bastin, undertaking the roles of Herod and Joseph.

Cluytens isn't nearly as dramatic in his approach as Munch, but he has more panache than his English rivals--this may be a religious subject, but Berlioz turns it into a confection as luscious as any patisserie could turn out in the form of a buche de Noel. The recorded sound is fine. Highly reocmmended as a holiday pick me up.

. . . you pay $0.01 for the album. Many complaints about the score-only release of THE PRINCE OF EGYPT were about the lack of some good cues missing from it. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, THE CHARIOT RACE among others were missing. Luckly, this promo includes two tracks that weren't released to the on the score-only album. "Chariot Race" is the action track every collector wanted. "It is only Beginning" is a good song too. Not sure what part of the film it is, though.

If you decide to purchase this, it's worth owning if you really want those two previously unreleased cues. Pretend you're buying them from iTunes with artwork and better sound quality and you'll see it pays off. It helps that there's a musical cue from the film like "Through Heaven's Eyes" but it's already on the other release. As for the rest of the songs, I don't care about them since I'm only interested in the score. But for the price offered, I guess it doesn't hurt to own more music.

        Buy at your discretion.

3 out of 5 stars Good sound, a little short.......2006-06-21

A few of the songs were done by different artists, and a few were taken right from the movie. The sound quality was good. I only wish there had been more songs included, such as Deliver Us and the end victory song that Miriam sings.
