5 out of 5 stars His best!.......2007-04-12

Delightful, insightful, a pure joy to listen to and sing along with. Pay close attention to the lyrics of the title song. It is prophetic and he didn't even realize it. "When the cities start to crumble, and the towers fall around us"

Catching up on what I missed when he was alive, still beautiful music!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-04-13

My exposure to this album came "back in the day;" in my boyhood, somewhere around 1973, when a second-hand vinyl LP came into my possession. By this time John Denver had become quite popular, so some of the songs were already familiar. It was the lessr-knowns that grabbed my heartstrings then, and still hold onto them today.

The cover of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" leaves the original standing in the shade. The stripped down arrangement and pregnant pauses invest the tune with a raw emotional power that the original's production job seemed to lack in comparison. The song has stayed with me and held me all of these years. As a musician myself, I revisit it from time to time, usually when I'm feeling down, for the second verse is a prayer. Certainly, there aer other highlights to this album, but this one's the high-water mark for me.

Denver's original songs, whether solo or accompanied by group arrangements, reflect a generational idealism in song, and may be seen as inspiraton for the outdoor lifestyle and conservation movements; "Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" would be my case-in-point. The pacifist movement was also represented on this album in a rather unusual fashion with the spoken-word, "The Box," a powerful anti-war poem that is all-too-applicable in today's times. The acoustic cover of the Beatles' "Let It Be" also stands out. While not eclipsing the original, it is nonetheless a testament to what John Denver was all about, and it fits perfectly with the rest of the material.

"My Sweet Lady" is one of the most tender love songs you'll ever hear. The title track deserved more than it got, in terms of being a hit. Its words perhaps sum up what John Denver really meant to a generation, depite becoming somewhat of an un-hip cliche to many in his later years:

talk of poems and prayers and promises
And things that we believe in
How sweet it is to love someone
How right it is to care
How long it's been since yesterday
What about tomorrow
What about our dreams
And all the memories we share

Thanks for what you've given us, John. The world needs more like you.

As for those who would consider this album for purchase, I can assert that it's likely the most definitive original album by this artist, and if you only buy one of his albums, this is THE one to get.

5 out of 5 stars The Box.......2006-02-11

I dont know about any one else but I have been trying to find this for a very very long time. I had it once on tape and didnt realize it. I was listening to a john denver tape one day and THE BOX came on. oh my god its so moving. I lost it over the years while moving accross country. and now I have found it again. I thought maybe it was just someting he put on a recorded tape never to be heard again. I just wanted to share with you all this is the best thing on this entire alblum.

5 out of 5 stars John Denver takes the Country Road to his big breakout album in 1971.......2005-08-22

I have been listening to the first John Denver hits collection for so long, the one where he went back into the studio and re-recorded some of his older songs, that listening to the original version of "Poems, Prayers & Promises" was rather strange. But it serves as a reminder of the simple start of his career before he became the most popular singer-songwriter in the country. In fact, the first concert I ever went to was a John Denver concert and to this day whenever I drive in the mountains I put on his music as my soundtrack while driving.

This 1971 album was John Denver's big breakthrough because of the single "Take Me Home, Country Roads" (co-written with Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert), but it is clearly the other original Denver songs that give this album substance. I think the title track is one of Denver's two best original songs ("Rhymes And Reasons" is the other, mainly because I can never really think of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" as being a John Denver song rather than a Peter, Paul & Mary song), and he also wrote "My Sweet Lady," "Wooden Indian," "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado," "Sunshine on My Shoulders," and "Around and Around." So it was interesting to me in retrospect that when "Take Me Home, Country Roads" climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, that what we think of now as the John Denver persona was fully established. He might have been a country singer, but he was singing of the high country of Colorado's mountains and that made him standout.

The other thing that surprises me about these early John Denver albums is how often he covered Beatles songs. On previous albums he covered "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Eleanor Rigby," and even "Golden Slumbers." On this one he not only does "Let It Be" but Paul McCartney's "Junk." Some of these work better than others, with the two on this album would be in that camp, and I cannot help but look at such efforts as indicative of Denver's ambitions as a songwriter. He also does an excellent cover of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain." However, the most surprising track has to be the last one, where Denver recites Abercrombie Lascelles's anti-war poem, "The Box." Such sentiments seem almost out of place on this album given the rest of these songs, but clearly Denver wanted to end with those words in the mind of his audience. Then again, as an example of protest "The Box" is a generic anti-war song and is not specific to the War in Vietnam. So the selection was not an impediment at that time to Denver becoming the most popular singer in the country.

      Album Description

"'Closing the Distance', by Alisa Fineman, focuses on spiritual commonalities among all people, with the intent of building bridges thru music to promote peace and understanding.

Closing the Distance; Prayers, Poems and Love Songs, contemporary arrangements of traditional and original songs from the Jewish Diaspora, is a sensual, compelling and richly rewarding new experience in world music. Along with producer, Alex de Grassi, Alisa has collected and arranged these 12 contemporary arrangements of traditional and original Hebrew and English songs from the Jewish Diaspora, flavored with lush settings of world-music instrumentation to compliment Alisa's warm, vibrant and captivating voice. This recording marks a radical, but also natural, departure from Alisa's contemporary personal music and a new direction for her musical and humanitarian sensibilities.

      5 out of 5 stars What a delightful Surprise.......2004-12-15

Last weekend I attended a Winter concert at our local college featuring Spencer Brewer(pianist) and Alex De Grassi(guitarist) whom I really enjoy listening to. During the concert, a guest performer presented two songs to the audience. The surprisingly delightful performer was Alisa Fineman. I really found myself enjoying her music. During the intermission I purchased two of the "Closing the Distance" albums. One of them was for me, the other for my Pastor who loves the Jewish Culture.
Right now I have the CD on, and am listening to it for the first time. I am really enjoying the music. It is peaceful and meditative. Alisa has a wonderful voice for this music. I advise people to purchase this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Acoustic Folk-Country.......2006-01-20

John Denver was a bit unusual, even during the height of his popularity. While music during this time was realigning itself to rock as pop, and acquiring a harder edge, John Denver became a success with a series of folk/country/pop songs.

John's fourth and first commercially successful album yielded two songs that are now considered country standards: "Take Me Home, Country Roads," and "Sunshine on My Shoulders." Both of these mellow songs set the tone for most of this album. The only song that breaks out of the mellow mold is "Wooden Indian," a short country-rock song.

Several wonderful songs from this album were commercially overlooked. "Junk," a Paul McCartney song, is a lovely acoustic fireside song well fitting with John Denver's image. "Gospel Changes" is another simple, yet beautiful, acoustic song. "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" is one of several songs John sang that related to the state that he enjoyed so much, and endeared him to the citizens of the state during and after his popularity waned.

The other songs on this CD are generally similar; mostly acoustic, mostly John's voice, generally mellow. A trademark of John's albums is that while he sings many of his own songs, he also sings songs by others. On this album he sings "Let It Be" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, "Fire and Rain," the classic James Taylor song, the aforementioned "Gospel Changes," along with collaborations on several other songs.

The last selection on this CD is somewhat unusual, a story titled "The Box." "The Box" is a combination political statement, cautionary tale, and protest tale all in one. The story fits well with John's image as a political activist, but it is difficult to believe that the story was allowed to go onto a commercially released album. Regardless, it is there, an artifact of days when protests were more vocal (and often more violent) than those of today. Fortunately, you can program your CD player to skip over this selection in favor of the beauty of the rest of the CD.

I listen to John Denver occasionally to balance my musical tastes. His music is a reminder of a simpler time, perhaps, of my youth, and of our country from not that long ago. There is beauty in this CD.

There are several versions of this album in existence. This particular version is imported from Japan. Its major attraction is that it is 24-bit digitally remastered, and audiophile fans of John Denver may find the quality desirable. Everyone else should review the choices available and choose that which meets their needs and budget.

John Denver's Breakthrough 1971 Album Coupled with his Classic 1973 Follow Up.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two classic seventies albums`.......2005-03-29

John recorded many fine albums so while these two are not my favorites they are extremely good, filled as they are with many great songs - typical of John's albums.

Poems prayers and promises, John's fourth album, was his first really big seller, making the top twenty in the American album charts on the strength of one hit single, the evocative and catchy Take me home country roads, which made number two in the American pop charts. It didn't chart in Britain until Olivia Newton-John covered the song - she had a UK top twenty hit with it in 1973. Another song from the album, Sunshine on my shoulders, became an American number one hit three years after the album's original release. Other outstanding songs here include My sweet lady, I guess he'd rather be in Colorado and the title track. The album also includes covers of Fire and rain (James Taylor) and Let it be (Beatles).

Farewell Andromeda, John's seventh album, yielded no big American hits but contains plenty of great music. The title track and I'd rather be a cowboy became minor American hits. Other outstanding songs include Rocky mountain suite and We don't live here no more. John also does a fine cover of Angels from Montgomery, the John Prine classic. The album also includes a Christmas song that people seem to love or hate (I love it) called Please Daddy, in which John sings about a child begging his father not to get drunk at Christmas. The long later appeared on John's Christmas album.

These are two brilliant examples of John's music. If you listen to these wondering how John could possibly improve on them, listen to Back home again, the best album that he ever recorded and one of the finest albums in the history of popular music.
