This five-disc set was the first release in BMG's effort to present Elvis's recorded legacy in a manner befitting the most important musical artist of his time. The strategy was simple--showcase, in chronological order, remastered versions of the King's 1950s output, from his sessions with Sam Phillips at Sun Studios (where they arguably invented the very notion of rock & roll) through his 1958 Army induction. Not everything Elvis recorded in the '50s was great (just as not everything he recorded in Hollywood was rotten), but there are dozens of tracks here that, quite simply, can make a bad day seem all that much better. Which surely still makes him the king of something. Suffice it to say this is one box set that lives up to its title. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars The Complete 50's Masters.......2007-04-12

Do yourself a favor and order this collection along with the 60's & 70's. There are songs you won't find on other CD's, and hear Elvis as a regular "guy" just makes you love him more.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Elvis '50s compilation.......2007-02-25

THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL: THE COMPLETE 50's MASTERS is a four-CD set, with a bonus disc containing alternate studio takes, and a lot of "live" Elvis recordings-- MGM Grand stuff, mostly. Except for the acetate of "That's When Your Heartaches Begins" and the few alternates, DISC 5 is fluff.

The other four CDs however are a treasure trove of the music that defined "The King." From his one-of-a-kind 1953 recording booth acetate of "My Happiness" to the 1958 fast version of "Ain't That Loving You Baby," this set documents Presley's recording career in chronological order and without gaps.

The 102-page long box-sized book includes sessionography, discography, color photos of all LP, EP and 45 picture sleeves, an excellent bio in easy to read print, and lots of other color and B&W photos. Sound quality is excellent. This one gets five stars for the biggest star of all!

The songs are great, but they're not listed on the CD itself-only on the case. It's frustrating to put the disks in a multi-disk changer and not know what songs are on the disk.

The essential 50`s, 60`s and 70`s are something every Elvis Presley fan should have INMEDIATELY!!!!! The king will always live!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An essential collection!.......2005-09-30

This is a comprehensive collection of Elvis' most influential work. Not every song is a classic, but there are many classics here. These are the recordings that shaped the foundation of Rock & Roll and popular music for a generation. From his early, ground breaking recordings for Sun Records to his smash 1950's hits with RCA, they are all here. Elvis at his creative peak! A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Not for the pretentious or those looking to unleash the college-boy inside.......2005-08-20

Wow! I have just recently started getting into R&B and soul music and I think I have now been spoiled. This album has serious rhythm, which is incredible seeing as how there are three mofos tooling on their guitars at all time. In my opinion you can't find many more guitarists that are better rhythm players than steve cropper and even though the liner notes don't name names, it sounds like Duck Dunn (or an admirable clone of Duck Dunn) is the bassist. If those two don't ooze rhythm, I don't know what does. Then again, most of what I have listened to is metal and prog rock, which are more lead oriented.
This album is a miracle. Fantastic songs. That's all I can really say. The first song, a "cover" of Ray Charles' "what'd I say" will wake you up faster than any cup of coffee ever could. I didn't think the solos would ever end, and I didn't want them to. At times, all three of them solo simultaneously but never get in each others way...they seem to be helping each other out. Big Bird is another tune that perfectly blends rhythm and blues together for a unique experience. All these dudes are jamming on the same page AT ALL TIMES! The way Ned Flanders prepares for The Rapture, I prepare for a new Steve Cropper/Duck Dunn album. I feel I have missed the bus though.

5 out of 5 stars Snap, Crackle & "Pop"!.......2004-10-22

One thing is certain...when these guys said "Jammed Together", they MEANT it; what an awesome album this is! Here we have two of the blues' elder statesmen (Pop Staples & Albert King), and the young "whippersnapper" (Steve Cropper) all assembled in one place, and the results are fantastic; there's no doubt that the three of them had a great time making this album!

"Jammed Together" isn't an album of self-indulgent guitar solos and noodling to satisfy egos; the title tells you all you need to know: this is all meat, no filler, folks. Because each of the three guitarists have very distinctive playing styles and tones, you can literally pick them out as you listen to it.

A great example of this can be heard on the rocking instrumental "Big Bird", where Cropper, King and Staples each occupy the left, middle and right stereo channels respectively, but the stereo separation didn't really need to be done so you'll know who is who; as I said, you'll literally be able to identify them with each solo turn.

In addition to the fabulous guitar playing, all three take turns on vocals as well; King leads off with the Ray Charles classic "What I'd Say", Cropper turns in a rare vocal on "Don't Turn Your Heater Down", and Staples on the positively spine-tingling "Tupelo", where his soulful vocals and trademark tremelo-effected guitar give the track a swampy, ominous feel and mood. It's very obvious that this song influenced John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, as evidenced by the CCR tracks "The Midnight Special" & "Born On The Bayou" alone.

Released on the Stax label in early 1969, "Jammed Together" is a genuine blues/soul classic; get it now!

5 out of 5 stars The way the blues should be.......2004-10-21

Yeah man! You can feel the soulful blues trickling and dripping down the neck of Cropper's Telecaster. Love this album. So many standards. What blew me away was realizing that one of my favourite Hip Hop samples came from 'Opus De Soul,' Public Enemy used it for their 'Give It Up' track back in 94. I'm bias anyway, anything that has the Staxx house band or Cropper's licks gets my vote. Pop's and King to boot? Better get'chaself daawn the crossroads bawwy! My souls taken!

4 out of 5 stars Stax's super session.......2003-03-23

Steve Cropper in particular is not crazy about this release. To him it's "just a bunch of jams that Al Bell spliced together." I finally shelled out the bucks for it and was pleasantly surprised. It's an interesting mix, these three guitar greats. Talk about different styles...you also get all three singing. The real test of this CD is the fact that it was all I listened to after I bought it. The idea was for it to be Stax's version of the Mike Bloomfield "super session" concept. It is at least as good or better than Super Session.

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2002-07-25

Jammed Together is somewhat of a surprise jam disc featuring three musicians with seemingly little in common. Pops Staples, Steve Cropper and Albert King. Pops Staples, the leader of the Staple singers, started his solo career at the ripe age of seventy. Pops played guitar with incredible agility for a man of seventy and his voice has been described as rough and sweet, sometimes wispy but full of soul. Pops released two solo albums, both steeped in gospel, in addition to this jam before his death on December 19, 2000. Steve Cropper was a guitarist for the popular R&B band, Booker T. & the MGs. Cropper was also a member of the Blues Brothers Band of film and recording fame. Albert King, was, well, Albert King, guitar extraordinaire. The guitar interplay between these three performers is first rate, exciting, sometimes funky and never dull. The guitarists blend with harmonious splendor and it is often hard to pick out which guitarist is playing the various solos. Vocal performances are kept to a minimum with each performer singing lead on one song apiece. This is Stax Records equivalent to Alligators "Showdown" featuring Albert Collins, Robert Cray and Johnny Copeland. Mighty good stuff. The liner notes are sparse and, as much as I would like to credit the excellent backup band, their identities are not revealed in the notes.

2 out of 5 stars Not like the "old time" Blackwood Brothers.......2006-11-10

Sound is quite different from Blackwood Brothers albums of 25 years ago. I was rather disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Blackwood Brothers Country.......2003-09-28

This album is the best of 60s-style country. Porter is a down-home singer with a warm, everyman style, and The Blackwood Brothers add the right dose of gospel and power singing. The classic country instruments, especially Porter's own steel guitarist, give this album a delightful twist. For a modern continuation of this classic, southern gospel sound, don't miss The Blackwood Brothers joining Engelbert Humperdinck in the CD, "Always Hear The Harmony." The Humperdinck-Blackwood Bros. feature has a lot of the same emotional quality asthis CD and is destined for "top in its field" just like this Porter-Blackwood Bros. team-up. 1st tenor great Bill Shaw, probably the greatest-ever gospel tenor, sings on both, and his high voice is unmistakable.

Wow is all you can say about this. A country giant meets a gospel institution & it works quite well! You go from traditional (There's A Higher Power) to true country gospel (Hank Williams' "A House of Gold"). Fans of both Wagoner & the Blackwood Bro's will find much to treasure on this set. This is country gospel at it's best. The only complaint is I feel BMG could've combined both volumes on one CD at a minimum cost. Otherwise, this is great-right down to original artwork and liner notes! A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Fans Must Own.......2003-10-29

I have almost every compilation of Elvis music and this one tops them all. I've owned this box set for several years and it continues to get spun regularly. The interview before Elvis was shipped to Germany is a classic and gives you a small glimpse at the quality person he was.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous collection!.......2003-07-13

These discs explain why Elvis became such an influential and towering rock 'n roll artist. His talent shows through on all of these songs and it's simply a great introduction for fans who are only familiar with the King's later work. I prefer the early Presley, and all the hits are here, but more importantly, his other, lesser known songs, are here as well. How about "Baby You're So Square," one of his most charming and fun recordings? Another gem is "Don't You Think it's Time." Even "Here Comes Santa Claus" is a stellar performance!

Another great feature is that you can hear Elvis develop his vocal style. There are three different versions of the fabulous "Shake, Rattle and Roll," and on each successive version, you can hear the improvements, both vocally and instrumentally. This is a piece of music history and will show even a casual listener that Elvis was amazingly gifted as a vocal innovator and rock stylist. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Lives :1954 to 1958.......2002-08-19

I'll let the song titles alone justify the purchase:1954 saw Elvis cut That's All Right, Blue Moon, Just Because & Good Rockin' Tonight; in 1955, Elvis dropped the following tunes on the world:You're Right, I'm Left, She's Gone/Mystery Train/I Forgot to Remember to Forget; Elvis 1956: Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel,Love Me Tender, My Baby Left Me,Love Me, When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again; The King in 1957 recorded Jailhouse Rock,Teddy Bear,I Beg of You, One Night, You're So Square, Blue Christmas,Treat Me Nice,Loving You & Got Alot of Livin' to Do. Before entering the Army, Elvis was able to record A Big Hunk O'Love in 1958. Now I am just listing some of my picks from a great collection of tunes that no record collector should be without. Do the right thing and pick this up. Thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect beginning............2002-03-23

This is the best place to start your Elvis Presley collection. Every single song he recorded and released during the 1950s plus a fifth disc full of alternate takes and rarities. You'll see why his talent dwarfed all the other great 50s artists. As good as they were, none could hold a candle to Elvis. A warning though to any potential buyer, once you get this set...you'll be on the road to buying lots more Elvis!!

5 out of 5 stars The King of the 50's.......2002-03-12

This box set proves that Elvis did not steal one thing during his rise to the top. He earned respect every inch of the way. Disc 2 is probably the greatest all around early rock and roll I've ever heard. His comfort level was growing and he was getting some really great songs.

The real treat for the collector is on disc 1. You get some of the earliest of the Elvis Sun studio recording. His performance of 'Blue Moon' is simple but effective in conveying a sense of loneliness.

Disc 5 ends with a long press conference conducted by Presley right after completing boot camp. It's interesting to hear how he interacts with the press and how he was trying to set himself up as just another private headed to duty.

These discs represent a piece of history the true collector must own.

4 out of 5 stars Great Historic Bluegrass!.......2005-03-21

When I was a child, my grandmother owned an old KING album by Ralph Stanley called "Brand New Country Songs". That recording was made in 1967 and has been out of print for far too many years, but finaly, here it is in the first twelve tracks of this wonderful box set.
At the time, I didn't know much about Bluegrass Music itself, other than the fact that I loved this album.
The best and most memorable of the songs on that album were "Hemlock and Primroses", "Wonderful World Outside", and "Love Please Stay". These are beautiful lonesome mountain love songs. However, there are humerous moments too (Poor Rambler), and great instrumentals ("Roe Hoe" and "Lost Train").
What I didn't know at the time was the fact that the "Brand New Country Songs" album was the first Ralph recorded after the passing of his brother Carter (together Ralph and Carter were the legendary Stanley Brothers), and Ralph hired a young 19 year old fellow named Larry Sparks who sounded much like the late Carter Stanley.
Larry went on to have a great career in bluegrass music.
Anyway, also featured here are two other great albums by Ralph ("Over The Sunset Hill" and "Hills Of Home"). Both of these albums featured the haunting lead vocals and guitar of Larry Sparks, who sounded much more mature at the time than his 19 years.
In addition to these classic albums, you get the entire session recordings made for Ralph's colaboration with Jimmy Martin (recorded in 1980). - Let's try not to upset some of the Bluegrass musicians out there but there are drums in the Martin/Stanley portion of this set. So much for the argument that drums and traditional Bluegrass don't go together.
At any rate, this set is well worth the money, and it deserves 5 stars... the only reason I gave it four instead of five is the quality of the master tape was poor and (especially if you listen to it on a headset) you hear lots of tape flutter and noise, but it's well worth sitting through that for these long lost treasures.
It's worth the money and more. If you like good traditional Bluegrass, buy this today and consider the Stanley Brothers box sets on the KING label.
