The compelling and compulsively listenable Darrell Scott is that most unusual of Nashville creators--a songwriter who crafts commercial tunes for such mainstream acts as the Dixie Chicks ("Long Time Gone"), Patty Loveless ("You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive"), and Travis Tritt ("It's a Great Day to Be Alive") and a highly respected Americana recording artist on his own. Equal parts poet, philosopher, and confessor of dark truths, Scott blends wisdom, humor, and social satire, and marries them to jaunty or jaundiced melodies dressed with augmented acoustic instrumentation (mandolin, fiddle, guitar, electric guitar, upright bass) that often evokes an earlier age. The Invisible Man, his sixth record, is perhaps his most intense, emotional, and spiritually searching, but also his most satisfying. His one cover, Stuart Adamson's "Shattered Cross," proves unforgettable in its edgy warnings against a woman who will "empty your pockets and rip out your heart / and leave you the ruins of a life torn apart." But Scott's own restless soul-searching, particularly on "And the River Is Me" and "Hank Williams' Ghost," has a way of connecting to your own. The effect is something akin to meeting a stranger who not only knows your shadow self, but somehow already occupies a place in your heart. Don't be surprised if this witty yet harrowing backwoods muse brings you to your knees. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
The Invisible Man - Darrell Scott.......2007-01-11
His head's in a song and a song's in his head.......2006-11-24
Who They Are: A bit of a rogue and maverick, Darrell Scott's a Grammy nominee and ASCAP's 2002 Songwriter of the Year.
What They Do: He's assembled an impressive team of players to present his originals on his sixth album
Little Known Facts: Born on a tobacco farm in the coal-mining center of London, Kentucky, Scott moved as a young child to East Gary, Indiana, a steel-mill town on Lake Michigan near Chicago. His father is a musician, and he grew up around music and creativity. By 16, he was playing roadhouses in Southern California. After some dues-paying years in Toronto and Boston, where he attended Tufts University, studying poetry and literature, Scott finally made the move south to Nashville. Darrell is currently an active member of Steve Earle's Bluegrass Dukes.
The Songs: "And The River is Me" presents some of Scott's self-assessment: "They had this test back in high school / Said I had a career in forestry / Had aptitude for isolation / Yeah, I could live without T.V. / But me, I took the low road / My soul flies up into the night / I don't live in a tower on some fire road / But the human view is out of sight." As central as Scott's own songs are to the project, the spirit of the CD is also captured in the only cover "Shattered Cross," from his friend Stuart Adamson. The powerful song was recorded within a month of Stuart dying.
The Musicians: Recorded live in Scott's home studio, he has a familiar core of distinguished and experienced players like bassist Danny Thompson (Richard Thompson, Rod Stewart) and drummer Kenny Malone (JJ Cale, Johnny Cash). The album also features Richard Bennett (guitar), Dan Dugmore (pedal steel, guitar), as well as many others to a lesser degree (John Cowan, Sam Bush, Gabe Dixon, Andrea Zonn, Tim O'Brien, Minton Sparks). The Invisible Man was mixed by award-winning engineer Gary Paczosa.
Of Special Note: In his own "Looking Glass," we gain some more insight into Scott's head. He sings "Me and this song we got a lot in common / Neither knows quite how they end / Just follow along like a leaf on the river / Believe we always can begin again."
If I Could Change One Thing: If I were producing his music, I'd like to hear a little more fiddle, pedal steel, resophonic guitar, and even more vocal harmonies in his music.
His Bumpersticker Might Say: Darrell Scott's got his head in a song and a song in his head
The Bottomline Is: Darrell's stirring songs "come riding in on the wind" and they are "rainbows in the sky"

A Different Path For Scott.......2006-07-14
Full-band blend of country, folk, rock, and jazz flavors.......2006-07-05
Still, this is an intriguing blend of Scott's soulful vocals with country, folk, rock and Celtic flavors. The introspective "And the River is Me" pares back the electricity and stretches out to over six minutes, and the pairing of "There's a Stone Around My Belly" and "Shattered Cross" is emphatic in its picking and singing. Scott's lyrics interweave many biographical details, but his poetry often provides obtuse imagery rather than story or character study; more Dylan than Simon in many cases. The verbal impressionism is matched by the complexity of the arrangements, which may challenging for listeners who enjoy more straightforward exposition. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

As former singer of American Music Club, Mark Eitzel wrote some of the biggest critical hits of the late 20th century. Yet adulatory reviews don't necessarily lead to sales, so this soulful, inspirational artist remains a cult figure. The Invisible Man is his first new recording in some three years. It's said the delay is due to the death by overdose of his muse and closest friend, Kathleen Burns. Yet this is no fraught collection of primal screams and gothic thunder. Instead we have a wildly varied selection of mood pieces. "Christian Science Reading Room" has a quiet acoustic guitar occasionally attacked by military drum rolls, then engulfed by a strange keyboard recalling the Residents' Not Available. "Sleep" is a beautifully judged electronic lullaby (Eitzel actually spent the last two years producing the album on a Mac in his living room, and his diligence shows through), while the warm and countrified "Proclaim Your Joy"--reminiscent of a speeded-up take on Eileen Rose's "Would You Marry Me?"--has Eitzel sounding genuinely (and surprisingly) uplifted. Like Eitzel's other work, this album's often wordy and morose--imagine Leonard Cohen badly beaten and left to think and die in solitary confinement. But on display here is a truly human spirit that music lovers will appreciate. Everyone should have one Eitzel album. This one will do. --Dominic WillsCustomer Reviews:
Beautifully hypnotic.......2003-08-05
"the dude's way sensative...".......2002-08-06
"Wisdom From Another World...".......2002-02-07
The sound could be defined as lo-fi home electronica,in keeping with 'Lovers Leap USA' and the '99 demo's,and would hopefully appeal to those who found 'Caught In A Trap...' too bleak.
'The Boy With The Hammer' sets the tone with its slow-building intensity only punctuated late on by Eitzel's knowing self-parody when he croons,"So... boo, hoo, hoo,I'm really gonna miss you...".
The next is best..."Can you see,can you see,can you see what the world is?/The way it pulls you on and tricks you it's always some new spring morning...?".A song as good as anything in the AMC and Eitzel back-catalogue.Acoustic and emotional beauty is the best way to describe it...but if I could describe it properly, you wouldn't be reading the rest of my hopeless attempt to do justice to the man and would instead, simply be buying this and the entire AMC/Eitzel collection.Which I sincerely hope you are...
'To The Sea' is a tribute to Jeff Buckley but in a slightly more personal way than I suspect other attempts might be...As the live introductions confirm(with the then hindsight of listening to the song on CD)the song is Eitzel confessing his attraction to Jeff but only to us in song...because the last time he saw Jeff in New York prior to his tragic drowning Eitzel had almost waved him away rather than face up to his feelings. That Eitzel can then tie all this in with Jeff's inability to come to terms with his father and just us,how we generally act and feel is genius..."I was just busy running/Running from your beauty/Some run from the devil/Some from their own history/Some run from their hopes/And some run to the sea/Stupid don't you agree?".Well,yes.And human. All too human...
The whole of this album maintains the feel, the feeling and I cannot really recommend it enough. It doesn't contain a bad track(although 'Christian Science Reading Room' has to be described as a dirge compared to the humour-central live performances - a minor quibble!)and has a warmth missing from the previous album...
The final track quite properly exhorts each individual throughout their life to proclaim their joy and this is special because after all that has gone before it is an acknowledgement that however life is,however bad it seems at any given time,it is ...still something to believe in.Believe in Eitzel's hard-won wisdom here, enjoy this magnificent album and proclaim your joy but seek also truth,or a truth, and bear in mind the question Eitzel forces you to face :"...But if the truth won't make you happy, what will you do...?" .The implication here is that you will, maybe against the odds, dig in and try to find that elusive beauty or feeling...An inspiration.
I think he is finally starting to hate himself less.......2001-12-22
This album breaks new ground musically for Eitzel. On his independently released "Lovers' Leap USA" we first heard Eitzel fooling around with ProTools in his apartment, but here we have much more fully realized arrangements. "Steve I Always Knew" appears on both albums and the difference between the two versions says it all. The Lovers' Leap version is stripped down and the Invisible Man version is lush. The Invisible Man reveals more and more with each listening and benefits from being played on a nice system with maximum dynamic range. This album was slaved over and it shows.
The one thing that surprised me was Eitzel's voice. He does not push it to its upper limits anywhere on this CD. His phrasing is as complicated and appealing as ever, but he stays near the middle and lower end of his vocal range. There is also more than the usual dose of humor on this album. "Christian Science Reading Room", in which both he and his cat get religion, is hilarious. "Proclaim Your Joy" is practically a Christmas song albeit a cryptic and goofy one.
I quite like the electronic touches here. Before I bought it I was under the impression that it was more electronic than it actually is. Generally speaking Eitzel seems to have recorded the basic tracks with available musicians and then tweaked and twiddled for uncountable hours to flesh out the bones. The Luddites among his fans may prefer more organic albums like 60 Watt Silver Lining, but I really admire Eitzel for trying something new and showing tasteful restraint musically while wearing, as usual, his heart on his sleeve.

1985 solo album by the Romanian producer best known as the group Enigma & previously known for his involvement with ArtOf Noise and Vangelis. Pre Enigma Cretu: His solo album.......2005-07-10
The album is a pleasure to listen to. I like Cretu's style of singing and his grace in his interviews. He has a dignity that many artists don't have. These stand alone songs are a trip down memory lane and a must for any euro pop fan.
Beautiful.........2004-05-14
But how dare you call this a crap only because of your absurd expectations to find Enigma in a 1985 Michael Cretu album release (which, by the way is 5 years before the groundbreaking release of MCMXC a.D)?
To make my point as clear as it gets, this has nothing to do with Cretu's later project, Enigma. Anyone who tries to compare this 85' release to the 'enigmatic' Cretu projects must have been seriously misguided. 'Invisible Man' has the ability to stand on its own. Blame it on its impeccable beauty.
Nine tracks are included here, three of which are parts of a flawless Cretu-sounding instrumental (which might be seen by some as an earlier Enigma influnce aka 85's Shadows in Silence), 2 are probably the most artistic Cretu moments ever (Carte Blanche & Your Favorite Toy), and one is an 80's killer hit (Samurai). The rest is just pleasurable to listen to:
1. SAMURAI: this majestic and powerful track starts with an incredibly atmospheric saxophone intro which could make Careless Whisper green with envy. Then it goes on with a nice power-pop drum percussion and rich synths which are pure ear-candy.And just when you think that you've heard it all, the ecstatic chorus blows your mind away. Cretu BIG time..
2. CARTE BLANCHE: Very tongue-to-the-cheek, with a repetative bassline and drumloops, a beautiful artsy number talking about the price we pay for being free.
3. SILVER WATER: nothing to get excited about. However, the faultless Cretu Production and the use of a strange language add some mystery and wonder to this atmospheric number.
This song is being given a better interpretation (as Mona Lisa) in Cretu's 1988 'Belle Epoque' album. (you can find it in amazon.com as Cretu & Thiers- Belle Epoque)
4. YOUR FAVORITE TOY: One of the best moments on this album. A memorable, lullaby-like tune accompanied by some emotional lyrics about childhood games and lost innocence stuff. Worked for me..
5.INTRO/6.MIKADO/7.CODA: This 3-part instumental is worth alone the price of this album. It might remind you of Enigma's 'Shadows in Silence' (from the genious 'Le Roi est Mort, Vive le Roi' album).
8. HEAVY TRAFFIC: Powerful drums, rich orchestration, passionate vocals and lyrics about the feeling we get when we're trapped in a traffic congestion. Not as great as the rest in this album, yet this is the favorite one of many listeners of this album.
9. THE INVISIBLE MAN: You can't really call this a ballad, but it sounds like one. In my humble opinion, it is the third best moment in this album, right after Samurai and Mikado. The closing effect it creates is really great leaving you a bittersweet feeling at the end of the album.
All in all, do not miss on that. It's worth more than just giving it a try. Either if you like Enigma or not..
1980s pop but good if that's what you want!.......2003-12-11
Overall, this is like Genesis meets Miami Vice. It makes you happy and you don't have horrible flashbacks of the artist's bad fashion. Cretu is proud of all of his work, including this. That's more than most early 80s artists can say as many of them laugh at their past. Not Michael.
I will say you can feel bits and pieces of Enigma barely creeping through, but this definitely isn't Ethno/Ambient/Dub if that's what you're expecting. The opening for "The Invisible Man" and "Coda" have future-Enigma written all over them!
Great to some, bad to others........2003-11-11
But its exactly the opposite of Enigma. It is pure 80's pop/rock music. No chants, no flutes, none of that good stuff.
But that doesn't mean it is bad. In fact, its absolutely great. I had been hearing how good a song Samurai was. The first time listening to it, I was dissapointed. I could hardly tell it was Michael Cretu. Even though I had been warned not to get my hopes up for an early Enigma cd, I still did and I was dissapointed. But when I went back through and listened to it again, it is a wonderful cd. I could best compare his solo work to a European Phil Colins with a little more edge to the music though. Maybe I am wrong on that comparison, but I am fairly right in saying if you like 80's music, then this is a wonderful cd. Just don't expect Enigma and it will be fine.
No need to get this CD fan or not........2003-10-23

Album Description
Leonardo - The Absolute Man is a reasoned, selective re-telling of the life of a great man, Leonardo da Vinci, the ultimate Renaissance man. It has been in the works for years, originating as the ultimate artistic dream of Magna Carta label head Peter Morticelli, who then placed the intellectual blueprints in the hands of Trent Gardner who commenced to create what is by far, the most complex, grand and magnificently sweeping collaboration the label has ever attempted.Leonardo sounds like no other progressive rock construct you have ever heard. It is a mix of cinematic progressive rock, symphonic rock, progressive pop and progressive metal, graced and articulated by true classical music and the theatrical scope of state-of -the-art soundtrack or dramatic stage music.

My Il Divino.......2005-12-16
Anyone who rates this piece poorly might want to recalibrate their listening habits. This is rare. In fact, I have purchased copies to send to other artists and musicians.
I guess I relate to this more because circumstantially, Leonardo and I have some things in common. Well done.
Superlative musical portrait.......2005-04-11
From the first moments of Leonardo - The Absolute Man, I could tell that this was going to be an excellent attempt at accurately representing Il Divino in musical terms. Being one of those rare people who actually enjoyed both of Explorers Club's CDs, I could really get into the sound of this album. The instrumental writing and playing is exciting and brilliant. It does manage to reflect different facets of Leonardo himself, at times precise and complex, but deeply pensive and emotional at others.
As far as casting goes, I was fairly happy, I would say. The singing talent is, of course, virtually unmatched on any album; even Arjen Lucassen's projects don't manage to assemble a more talent-filled list. LaBrie especially shines for me, since I'm more familiar with him than any of the others, though I also like Mike Baker's singing on this album. At first, Lisa Bouchelle didn't seem quite right as Mona Lisa, but I grew accustomed to her, and having read an interview she gave on Highwire-Daze, I respect what she does for the character. And what can I say, if this were ever live, I wouldn't mind seeing her onstage ;-). I have no qualms with any of the other choices.
Ultimately, I would say that this is a very well-made album, and one that takes an interestingly personal, if slightly fanciful, look at da Vinci. Though there isn't enough time to paint him as the Homo universalis that he surely was, the 66 minutes we do get are as true to him in spirit as one could hope for. And while it would be presumptuous of me to say he'd have been proud, I think he would have appreciated it, and I can't imagine any other current band doing anything half as worthy to bear his name.
Beautiful.......2004-01-18
Absolute Train Wreck!.......2003-12-23
Gardner has no ear for melody! ZERO! Here we get more of his awkward writing with good singers struggling mightily to salvage it. And as another reviewer pointed out - the sound is awful!
With all of the top-notch progressive rock being put out today, there is no excuse for something this inferior. I have to believe that all of the 5-star reviews here are written by Gardner's friends and family. Trent, please, go back to law school or whatever it was that you were doing before you decided to become a musician!
