In 1967 Glen Campbell broke through to become a household name following his hit version of Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." With follow-up hits "I Wanna Live" and "Wichita Lineman" paving the way for his enormously successful CBS variety show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, Campbell rode a trail of hit singles well into the 1970s. This hits collection reflects his wide-ranging repertoire and flair for mixing old and new. Though his spin on John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind" barely broke the Top 30 in 1967, it gained immortality as the Goodtime Hour theme song. With the now-classic "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights," Campbell's ability to create chart-topping country singles that resonated with non-country fans was years ahead of its time. Tackling songs forever associated with others (the Everly Brothers' "Let It Be Me" and "All I Have to do Is Dream" and Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe") can be risky, but Campbell's strong, passionate interpretations put them across. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad........2007-05-20

Great compilation of Glen's better known recordings. The quality of the CD recording quality could have been better. It's very listenable, but not up to the standards better equipment demands.

5 out of 5 stars I like this album.......2007-02-07

A lot more great music than I bargained for.

I like this album a lot. Highway Man and Gentle on My Mind are great tracks.

4 out of 5 stars nearly great musical selection.......2006-11-16

Glen Campbell is now an under-appreciated talent, as his superstar - even mega-star - status was prime in the 60s and 70s. However, the songs he recorded, both as top session musician on others' recordings, and his own recordings as a singer, stand the test of time. I could wish the selection of songs included one I'd seen him perform on television - MacArthur's Park - and I could wish this CD compilation had the selections in chronological order to better appreciate the sophistication of the talent and the choices he made. One has to assume, like most compilation CDs, the song list order is not designed to feature the artist but to grab the attention of a casual shopper, who typically doesn't glance beyond the first 5 song listings. Therefore, the most famous 'classic' Glen Campbell's are represented, as is the distinctive mournful quality of his voice, a rather strong vocalist, probably underrated even at the time of his greatest fame. Unfortunately, one would wish the cover versions of other performers' classics - "Let It Be Me," for one - were more adventurous in the arrangement. A literal version doesn't serve anyone. I would have preferred a version of the song(s) as if Glen Campbell had never heard them done before and how he would have interpreted/arranged the song(s) to suit himself. Some people find Campbell's voice too "vanilla" but really he is the icing on the cake. With the strange lilting sadness in all his vocals, even the upbeat song classics like "Southern Nights," his voice is never icky sweet, but just right. In fact, can anyone really imagine any other singer doing justice to "Witchita Lineman" or "Galveston" with the mournful quality of his voice alone? Even though many of the arrangements of songs are too syrupy - elevator music, as it's known - Glen Campbell the vocalist is surely unique, and that attribute will stand the test of time. If you just want to have a single rather comprehensive disk on hand, of this artist, then this is the one to grab - that's the reason I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars The Wichita Lineman Is Still on The Line.......2006-08-27

This album is well worth the purchase price due to the integrity of the lyrics. The music is a bit dippy in some of the pieces, including Witchita Lineman, but all the favorites included on this disc are well worth the time to listen to and enjoy. No matter what you think of Campbell, this soup is good food. :-)

2 out of 5 stars Unforgivable sound quality.......2006-01-09

I bought this knowing full well the dubious sound quality based on other reviews but wanted it anyway because it does have the best selection of any single Glen Campbell compilation. After listening to it I am astounded-the sound quality is not what I expected. In this day and age there is NO excuse for a mediocre-sounding CD and this one definitely is. The liner notes say that it is remastered by somebody but it seems as though that little care was given in the remastering process. It is truly an amateurish job. Don't get me wrong-this is NOT a terrible-sounding recording. In fact, 15 years ago this would have sounded just fine, but this is a 2003 issued CD, and it should sound better than this.

Those seeking an introduction to the "Rhinestone Cowboy" would be better served with the more-focused (and less-expensive) Very Best of Glen Campbell or perhaps the two-disc Glen Campbell Collection. This collection does include Campbell's biggest and brightest, but often wanders off course to include covers, live takes, and instrumentals. Not that these make for bad listening--they're simply not essential hits, as this set's title would have you believe. On the other hand, this package has the improved sound quality and offers a sense of the man's versatility. Options, options. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Glen Hits the Mark..........2007-03-11

The Glen Campbell 20 Greatest Hits album was the perfect gift for my wife. She has wanted his Wichita Lineman song and such for years and we found the right deal at the right time.

4 out of 5 stars I liked this album!.......2006-05-24

Glen Campbell (b. 1936) was an ever-present part of the late 60s/70s music scene with such hits as Gentle On My Mind, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, and (of course) Rhinestone Cowboy. And then, came the substance abuse, and it all just fell apart. In 2000, this album was cut, combining various great tunes from along Mr. Campbell's career.

Now, as the album includes such as Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay and He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, you can tell that this is not really a collection of his top selling songs. Instead, this album gives a good cross-section of great Glen Campbell tunes, showing off the range of his performances. Overall, I liked this album, especially the old hits of Southern Nights, Rhinestone Cowboy, and Galveston. So, if you are a fan of that great 70s country and rock, then you will like this album. I know I did!

5 out of 5 stars The Wichita Lineman comes home........2005-12-11

Silky-smooth vocals and tender guitars are the hallmark of this, the Magnum Opus of Glen Campbell's catalog. Played against a back-drop of modern rock-n-country drivel, we all are reminded why we chose Glen to write the soundtrack of our lives in the first place. Five stars for the helmet-haired minstrel from Arkansas.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2005-10-09

One of my favorite cd's to listen to on the road.
I was at a street fair a couple of years ago and Witcheta Lineman came on the sound system. I had not heard it in years and I thought man this is a great song, went and bought this cd a few days later and WOW! I was blown away at how much I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars Good music but where are the hits?.......2005-09-25

Cheap collection of 6 or 7 hits with other tracks that never should have appeared on a Greatest Hits set.All the songs are great but when you read 20 GREATEST HITS on the cover, you expect to hear 20 hits.
Better try another CD if you want the hits but if you're just looking for great songs by Glen Campbell, you can try this one.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best.......2006-08-24

I still have the LP of this disc that I received as a birthday present when it came out. I can remember the night Campbell and John Hartford appeared on "The Smothers Brothers Show" to sing "Gentle on My Mind"; the next summer The Glen Campbell Show replaced the Smothers Brothers. Not that I was happy to see them go, but it meant I got to hear Campbell's new music at least once a week.

What of this disc? "Gentle on My Mind" is the greatest of a list of great Campbell songs; it was his starmaker. This album sounds quite a lot like the title track; it doesn't have as many of the orchestrations and "produced" sounds of his later hits. Those are fine too (especially "By the Time I get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Rhinestone Cowboy") but these songs focus more on the voice and the guitar. If you like the produced sound, you'll enjoy "You're My World" and some of the others. Besides the title track, I remember loving "Mary in the Morning" and "Without Her". The album closes with a convincing cover of "Crying".

Wow, and this is four bucks? Gotta have it at that price.

4 out of 5 stars Still A Great Listen.......2002-07-06

I hadn't listened to this in over 25 years. I have come to appreciate Campbell's use of voice and instrumental backup. Some wonderful songs here like Catch the Wind and It's Over as well as the title cut. An excellent listen.

5 out of 5 stars Memories, memories, memories..........2007-01-20

I listened to this on LP when I was a kid...I knew all the words and learned to sing "high" by singing with Glen. He is still just an awesome performer, and it's so good to know that this is here for us "old folks" to buy and share with our children to show them what REAL music is!

5 out of 5 stars Glen at his best.......2005-08-21

This was probably Glen Campbell's best album effort and marks the height of his superstardom. It contained two huge crossover hits, "Wichita Lineman" and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife". Many of Glen's other albums also contained a couple of hits, but sometimes fell short in filling out the rest of the disc. Not so here. Glen does excellent covers of "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay", "Words", "Reason to Believe", and "You'd Better Sit Down Kids". Add to that delightful versions of "Ann", "The Straight Life", and, perhaps Glen's most underrated performance, "If You Go Away". Glen adds in the self-penned "Fate of Man" and wraps up the album with the mournful "That's Not Home". The cuts have the flavor of pop, rock, and country all woven together in a masterful collection. If were to buy one Glen Campbell album, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Wichita Lineman.......2005-08-08

Back when I was a kid, Glen Campbell had a string of hits that gave him many accolades. While I would agree that this is an album around singles, "Wichita Lineman" is one of the greatest songs that has been played on American radio, back when singles had great influence.

5 stars for the title track alone. It is his best.

Also, "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" is a pleasant waltz and another haunting melody.

FYI - "Reason to Believe" is the same song that was covered more recently by Rod Stewart.

Glen was one of the first to take country genre mixing and he succeeded.

4 out of 5 stars A few hits, a few overlooked gems and a little filler........2004-08-23

Glen Campbell is definitely a singles artist. He's released dozens of classic singles and works best within the frame of a three minute pop/country composition. Although he won a Grammy for album of the year for 1967's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", his LPs are usually not worthy of such an honor. A Glen Campbell LP from the 60s and 70s usually consisted of a current hit single, a recent hit single, maybe one yet to be, several covers, and a couple of lesser known tracks. The result was always enjoyable, but rarely cohesive. "Wichita Lineman" is one of his best-remembered albums for several reasons. Being his only Billboard #1 pop LP, it presents Campbell at the zenith of his initial 60s superstardom. It was during this album's chart run that he became a household name and it features two of his most memorable hit singles: "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife" and the smash title track, which along with "Gentle On My Mind" and "Rhinestone Cowboy", has become one of his signature tunes. Glen's plaintive vocal of the song's haunting lyrics (by Jimmy Webb) coupled with Al DeLory's string arrangement and the ultra cool bass-guitar solo break combined to make this a much revered classic among classics. The line "...and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time" is one of the all-time great romantic lyrics.
After the hits come the covers. The ones that work best are takes on Sonny Curtis' "The Straight Life", Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe", and a definitive version of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "If You Go Away". The latter is one of Glen's all-time greatest vocal performances and this track is certainly an overlooked gem. He also does convincing covers of Otis Redding's "Dock Of The Bay", Billy Ed Wheeler's "Ann", and the Bee Gees' "Words". Less successful is his rendition of Sonny Bono's "You Better Sit Down Kids". That leaves two tracks. "That's Not Home" is a sad tale of broken romance reminiscent of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". It's written by Billy Graham (I'm assuming not the evangelist) and is another great vocal performance. The last track is an original spoken word piece that Campbell based on a poem written by his grandfather, "The Fate Of Man".
If you already own a comprehensive hits collection by Glen Campbell you may want to consider adding this disc to your collection as well. It's well worth the price just to have "If You Go Away".

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding early work of a superstar.......2003-04-23

Some of Glen's best early work appears here. A great version of the old Sonny & Cher classic, "You better Sit Down Kids" PLUS "Words" which Glen does SO MUCH BETTER than the BeeGees ever did. "If You Go Away" is so heartfelt and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" is nothing short of classic for the period. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars This is the good stuff folks!.......2003-05-16

I have often said, "You don't have to like this guy but you have to admit that he has talent!" Well, I LIKE THIS GUY! I haven't heard these songs in about 20 years, but they still sound great. Two Jimmy Webb classics for the price of one here in Galveston and Where's the Playground Susie ~ and recorded by the only man in the world who can sing what is in Jimmy Webb's heart! There are even two pretty good songs co-penned by Glen Campbell himself which is something you don't see much of! Also, there is a song called Oh What a Woman which is so dated that it is now endearing as an artifact from a time when men got away with talking about us like that. Glen Campbell may be 67 years old, but all he has to do is open his pipes to sing one note and my much-younger heart still goes pitter pat remembering the joy of these classic albums that are now remastered on CD! This is one of the best of the series. I hope you'll enjoy the memories as much as I am!!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2002-05-31

If you only buy the "greatest hits" compilations you get the icing but not the cake. Fortunately for those interested in getting a more balanced, complete listen to the wonderful music that Glen and producer Al de Lory created, the original albums are now being released on CD. Most pop albums today are chalked full of "filler" material of inferior quality and little merit. Not so with any of these albums. Great attention was given to quality song selection and the arranging/production of the tunes is consistently outstanding-usually surpassing the performances of the original artists and setting new standards of creative excellence for the new material introduced on the album. By today's standards, some of the orchestrations are a bit on the top heavy side-but aside form that, this album is as listenable as any you'll find today. Most are familiar with the title track, yet "Take my Hand for a while" and "Where's the Playground Susie" are every bit as melodic and "If this is Love" is an unusual a track that really cooks in a restrained sort of way. And "Oh What A Woman" is so un-PC by today's standards it borders on being either funny or embarrassing-depending on your point of view-but is so catchy you'll be singing along offending your favorite feminist. Oh well, some things have changed, but great music still remains. This album is a worthwhile bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Glen Campbell.......2002-10-22

Glen Campbell is the all time favourite Artiste of both my Wife and myself.

Glen's intense, sincere and meaningful interpretation of both words and music is second to none.

For me, Glen was always at his very best when singing Jimmy Webb songs: for example, 'Pheonix' 'Wichita Lineman' 'Dreams of the ev'ryday Housewife' 'Galveston' to name but a few.

Over the years, my Wife and I have saw Glen in live concert several times in the UK where we live.

In a London theatre in 1978, Glen read out our names on stage and sang a Wedding Anniversary song for my Wife and I. It was a wonderful experience for us and Glen's song 'gift' was truly appreciated and will live in our memory forever.

Thank you Glen.

4 out of 5 stars Three Must-Have Gems.......2005-01-05

Don't get me wrong. Most of this album is very good although I do not feel that the two bonus tracks the label tossed on the front end fit well with this particular musical statement. Frankly, they seem a bit dated here. Nevertheless, Jimmy Webb is a master songwriter and Glen Campbell is one of his best interpreters. My absolute favorites are "Adoration," "Ocean In His Eyes" and "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress." The remastering is a bit uneven but the original recordings from 1974 were probably too difficult to fully restore. Still, I am happy that this album found its way into re-release. Get this one. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply stated: Brilliant! Buy it!.......2004-10-25

This recording is so good I won't waste your time on a lengthy review. Buy it and listen. This is pop music at its most emotionally moving best. Glen's singing is flawless. The arrangements are delicious. The songs are moving. Thirty years after its original release and my first listen to this album, I can't stop the tears that well up from the emotion of the lyrics. Get over whatever prejudices you might have about Glen Campbell or Jimmy Webb or pop music in general. You deny yourself one of the greatest musical treats offered up in the last half of the twentieth century if you do not get this album and listen to it until it captures you as it has captured me.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies but goodies.......2002-01-10

Like the other reviewers, I had the incredibly good fortune to stumble upon this LP back in the 70's. I was no Glen Campbell fan but repected Webb as a songwriter (and later as an arranger) but would never, ever regard Jimmy as a 'singer'. I only new one song "the moon's a harsh mistress" which immediately blew me away when I heard it at my uni's coffee shop one folkie concert night.
Anyway, the LP was only 2nd hand so I payed my 3 bucks or whatever and took it home to play. For my money I received years of joy from the combination of brilliant songwriting and masterful interpreting that were lovingly produced in an almost flawless sequence. You sing, cry, smile wryly at the accuracy of the emotions expressed - even after hearing it a hundred times. Neither Campbell or Webb has done anything better than this - sadly - but then again, how could they. This is a fluke combination that somehow jelled to create a piece of art that I would take with me onto any deserted island. Do not hesitate to acquire this gem.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars, but do try to find the Australian version.......2001-12-10

This is an excellent album, and good news that it is now available in the US, but there is an earlier version released in Australia called Reunited.

For both versions, the sound has been remastered, and the full album is there. The difference is in the bonus tracks selection. While this US version features two of Campbell's & Webb's classic collaborations (Phoenix & Wichita), they are relatively easy to find. The Australian version, on the other hand, compiles 90% of Glen's subsequent coverage of Jimmy's songs, and some of these are very rare on CD. It's at least double the length of the US CD, but of course costs a bit more as an import.

I'm still giving this a 5-star for the strength of the original Reunion album and the remastered sound.

5 out of 5 stars As compelling a collaberation as I've ever heard . . ........2001-11-05

I am old enough to have purchased this album when it came out in the 70s. Though at the time I listened exclusively to rock music, and played in rock and roll bands, I had always admired the writing of Jimmie Webb. I bought the album (almost embarassed to go to the check-out with a country album) and was transformed. Whatever you may think of country music today, no unbiased listener could fail to acknowledge the brilliance of Glen Campbell's talent nor the emotional depth of Webb's compositions. When CDs first started to appear in the 1980s and I, like so many were then doing, was deciding which of my records were worth purchasing in the new format, this record was the one I waited for. This was the record I prayed would one day come out in CD. And now, twenty years later, that prayer has been answered.

The 10 song All-Time Favorite Hits only scratches the surface of ace session-guitarist-turned-superstar-singer Campbell's extensive output, but provides a good if skimpy sampling of some of the artist's most memorable hits. Included are Campbell's classic Jimmy Webb-penned '60s hits "Wichita Lineman," "Galveston," and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," plus the similarly popular "Gentle On My Mind" and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife." Rounding out the package are his '70s countrypolitan smashes "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Southern Nights," and "Country Boy (You've Got Your Feet In L.A.)." For a more thorough account of Campbell's career, fans might want to check out Razor and Tie's 2 CD set The Glen Campbell Collection (1962-1989) or Capitol's 3 volume Essential Glen Campbell series. --Scott Schinder

4 out of 5 stars What middle America listened to a generation ago........1999-02-19

His string of pop hits began in the late sixties, but he didn't play Woodstock and he didn't play Monterey Pop. So much has been made of the music that represented the rebelliousness of the 60's that it's easy to forget that America was in many ways a more conservative place than it is today. There were fewer working mothers, fewer divorces, fewer teen pregnancies. This CD is a good snapshot of what was echoing over AM airwaves across middle America in the late 60's and 70's.

"Dreams of the Everyday Housewife," a top 40 hit that you will probably never hear on oldies radio, heartbreakingly describes the "what-might-have-been" longings of a young woman who finds that marriage isn't living up to her romantic schoolgirl fantasies of Prince Charming. Campell's clear, tragic-hero voice makes the most of the evocative lyrics of Jimmy Webb-penned hits like "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "Galveston." Though his hits continued throughout the 70's, the lyrics, no longer written by Jimmy Webb, lost their impact. For example, "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet In L.A.)" gives us gems like "Livin' in the city ain't never been my idea of gettin' it all." The lyrics of his last pop No. 1, "Southern Nights," make almost no sense to an average listener and the song suffers from the campy female background vocals that infested a lot of late 70's music.

This collection is good for people who want to hear pop classics that radio rarely plays these days. However, Campbell fans may find this CD lacking--it leaves out several of his lesser-known top 40 hits and doesn't include any of his country-oriented output of the 80's.

You could name scores of country artists whose catalogs go deeper than Glen Campbell's, but it would be next to impossible to name more than half a dozen singers who can match Campbell's countrypolitan best: "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "Galveston" (all late-'60s crossover hits) are as sonically gripping and emotionally powerful as popular music gets. That's thanks in part to their songwriter, Jimmy Webb, but just as significantly, it's due to Campbell's not-quite-manic croon and the dramatic, hook-laden production of Al DeLory. And Campbell had several more hits in nearly the same league, "Gentle on My Mind" and "Try a Little Kindness" being just two of the most obvious. This is all the Glen Campbell you'll probably ever need, but what's here is essential. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2005-07-30

I listened to Glen Campbell as a child. I'm now over 40 and his songs (and this album) have really held up well. There's a special quality to his voice, and the songs, esp. those by Jimmy Webb, are beautiful and poignant without being saccharine. Campbell is underappreciated by critics.

5 out of 5 stars Out of Print But can be found via Amazon.......2005-07-13

Excellent CD of Campbell's very best tunes, Just as the title says. I picked this one up just a Month ago at My local Record store, New and sealed, but it had been on the shelf forever, and is officially OOP. I intended to get the 2003 BEST Cd, but got scared off by reports here of lackluster sound quality...This CD is fine, sonically, though less dynamic than most remastered Cd's in 2005. But this has ALL the best Tunes, 15 quality cuts, I don't miss Universal Soldier or any of those minor Hits others complained were not here, and these ARE the original Hit versions, despite One reviewer's declaration to the contrary... good CD photo of Glen's Head in the Clouds; No Fat on this One....Eat it up!

4 out of 5 stars Looks like there is a better alternative available nowadays.......2004-11-30

Like so many other recording artists who emerged in the 1960's Glen Campbells rise to fame and fortune was meteoric and quite unlikely. It is fair to say that Glen had been around the block a few times when in 1968 he was sort of "discovered" by the Smothers Brothers who were looking for a summer replacement for their highly successful CBS variety show. The nation fell in love with Glen and all of a sudden the network had a huge hit on its hands. "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" returned in January 1969 and Glen Campbell became a household name. But it wasn't always that way.
In the fall of 1961, Glen Campbell released the original version of "Turn Around, Look at Me" on the tiny Crest label. The tune was a local hit and made a small dent on the national charts. In the ensuing few years he would manage a couple of more minor hits and did some work with the Beach Boys. Then in 1967 he hooked up with songwriter John Hartford and recorded "Gentle On My Mind". Now people were beginning to pay attention. And the success of the television show paved the way for Glen Campbell to become a full-fledged star.
"The Very Best of Glen Campbell" features a total of 15 tracks from the years 1967 through 1977. It really was a remarkable run. Enjoy once again favorites such as "Wichita Lineman", "Galveston" and his wonderful duet with Bobbie Gentry "All I Have To Do Is Dream". I am also partial to some of his lesser known hits like "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife", "Where's The Playground Suzie" and most especially the highly uplifting "Try A Little Kindness" from 1969. In addition you will find Glen's two outstanding #1 hits from the 1970's "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights"
But alas, this disc does have it's flaws. Originally released on CD in 1990, this collection is missing several tunes I would have liked to have seen included. Songs like "True Grit", "Honey Come Back" and "The Universal Soldier" are simply nowhere to be found. Add to that the total lack of any liner notes and this collection does leave something to be desired. However, I am very pleased to report that Capitol has appeared to rectify many of these shortcomings with the release of "Glen Campbell: All The Best" in 2003. For my money, that one is now the better buy.

2 out of 5 stars The Unoriginal Glen.......2003-09-04

The songs are the right ones but the recordings aren't. When buying the CD nowhere did I see that this was NOT a compilation of original recordings. Even on the CD it's hard to divine the origin of the tracks - but it appears that the tracks were re-recordings of Glen's standards. That said, the songs are done fine but if you're looking for that original sound you have to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars In a class by itself.......2003-02-04

It's seems almost silly to review this CD - either you are intimately familiar with these songs or, "what planet have you been living on"? (Of course I'm speaking of the 'over 40' crowd here).

To start, "Wichita Lineman" has to be the greatest Country/Pop crossover song ever written. Jimmy Webb's amazing songwriting abilities are only amplified by Glen's never-overstated but powerful vocals. But whether it's "Wichita Lineman", "Galveston", "By the Time I Get To Phoenix" or "Gentle on My Mind" (OK, John Hartford wrote that one) doesn't really matter.....these songs are all giants in their own right - the fact that Glen recorded them all and made them what they are is only more amazing.

Everyone has different musical taste but I think it can be honestly stated that if you don't like these songs, something is wrong with your ear or your heart.
