Easy Tiger, Ryan Adams's ninth solo studio album, is a return to form in every way. He's already shown that he can bash out three albums in one year--not to mention the hilarious fake hip-hop records posted for free on his Web site--and that he can sound as much like the Grateful Dead as he wants to in his constant subsequent touring. Backed once again by the Cardinals, Adams synthesizes and refines his approach to smooth, gorgeous country-pop. "Tears of Gold" is one of the best songs he's written in ages, while "Two" is a slowly percolating, sweet little number that recalls Sean Hayes in its soulful folksiness (someone named Sheryl Crow accompanies Adams on vocals). One of the greatest treats of this languorous, twangy album is the subtle ways that genre gets played with. "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" is the best Harvest outtake Neil Young never wrote, while the treated, synth-sounding guitar solo on the druggy, chooglin' "Halloweenhead" sounds like it comes straight out of Journey. And "The Sun Also Sets" sounds more than a little like Rufus Wainwright covering Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." It bursts with enough melodrama as to border on musical theater. But, as is clear on these songs of love and loss, Adams has always been at his best when giving into his most mellow, dramatic side. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

In other words--easy, Tiger.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album.......2007-07-19

Once again Ryan Adams makes another solid album. every song is great. My favorites are Hallowenhead, Tears of Gold and Everybody Knows. So go ahead and buy it you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A true Ryan Adams classic.......2007-07-18

I've been trying for years to nail down who Ryan Adams reminds me of, and I've finally figured it out: Van Morrison. Both are roots-bound almost to the point of being revivalists, both are notoriously temperamental, and both are wildly, erratically prolific, sometimes to a fault; yet both are unquestionably geniuses (almost unarguably so, much to the chagrin of their detractors).

So what does this analogy have to do with a review of "Easy Tiger?" To put Ryan Adams's new album in perspective, it would be the equivalent of Van Morrison's "Moondance." It is the first record that comes across as being almost conservative in its polished professionalism. If you're a Van fan who hated "Moondance" because its warm, relaxed, pastoral vibe felt like a "sellout" after the wild abandon of Them and the heady experimentalism of "Astral Weeks" (and I'm sure there were more than a few people of that opinion at the time), then likewise, "Easy Tiger" is going to sound too safe, too pat. But if you think "Moondance" is a beautiful masterpiece, then you may well love "Easy Tiger."

This is the album where Ryan Adams sobers up, bears down, and actually turns out an album of "all-killer, no filler" (arguably the first since "Heartbreaker"). And if that comes at the expense of the roughness and raggedness that has accompanied his best work to this point, then so be it. But ten years down the road (if Ryan Adams keeps getting songs like "When the Stars go Blue" covered by enough mainstream artists to make him a mainstream artist himself), my money is on this album being considered as one of his true classics.

In a way, it's almost a career summation up to this point. It has the acoustic front-porch "Heartbreaker" vibe on "These Girls," the lush "Gold"-ballad feel on "Two, and "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" the "Demolition"-style late-night laments of "Everybody Knows and "The Sun Also Sets," the atmospheric "Love Is Hell" angst of "Off Broadway," the "Rock and Roll" crunch on "Halloweenhead," the jam-band "Cold Roses" sound on "Goodnight Rose," the "Jacksonville City Nights" countrypolitan of "Tears of Gold," and to make it complete, "Pearls On a String" and "Two Hearts" even harken back to his Whiskeytown days.

In fact, this album plays almost like a Ryan Adams Greatest Hits album that, like a good hits comp, manages the trick of being summative without being disjointed or haphazard. And like a good compilation, these songs are all keepers. If this is what being sober means, here's hoping Ryan can stay on the straight and narrow from here on out and have a later-day career as interesting and rich as Van Morrison's.

5 out of 5 stars Yea right.......2007-07-18

Why don't y'all shut up. Don't care for the critique. Dumb losers it's just music.

2 out of 5 stars Little too country for my tastes.......2007-07-17

Upon my first listen to this album I could not finish it...the songs were a little too twangy and Adams' voice was as well. My taste is more on the rock side of things, and this album falls definitely more on the country side.

4 out of 5 stars One Man's Trash Ain't Another Man's "Ripoff".......2007-07-16

As with many artists, Ryan Adams has two kinds of fans: A) Those who pour over and worship his every utterance, and B) people who have or dig songs from an album or two. I fall a little closer to the former. But I'm a recent convert, so I can still remember life before impending fandom set in. There are good and bad things about Easy Tiger. The uber-slick production on every track tends to sound forced. Snare drums hit with razor-clarity and guitars are pro-tools polished, and crisp. This might attract some listeners, but his last two albums (Jacksonville City Nights and 29) had pretty rough edges, evoking alt. country bleed-through of a bygone era. As for whether or not the songwriting is still good, again that's entirely subjective. Some people admire where he's at as an artist, and some will just never forget that song they loved 6, 8, or 10 years ago. Moments like that are hard for even the most prolific writers to re-duplicate. I say put the record on, drive around for a few days listening, but not giving it your full attention. See if it becomes the soundtrack to what you're going through. It did with me, which is why I can't stop playing Easy Tiger now.

One of country's most distinctive voices, John Anderson racked up an impressive list of hits in the '80s and '90s ("Swingin'," "Money in the Bank") before his career grew erratic. Now he returns as the newest member of Big & Rich's MuzikMafia, and this solid effort (produced by Rich, who had a hand in much of the writing) appears on B&R's label, Raybaw Records. If "Funky Country" owes a little too much to the rebel stomp of "Comin' to Your City," other songs Anderson crafted with his MuzikMafia cohorts--the exquisitely sad "Bonnie Blue" and the mid-tempo ballad "I Can't Make Her Cry Anymore"--more than hold their own. Producer Rich wisely divides the program between stone-cold honky-tonk and contemporary country, balancing the George Jones-like novelty song, "Brown Liquor," with the pop-ish "You Already Know My Love," and throwing in the Dylanesque "Weeds" for good measure. Willie Nelson's nasal whine threads through a song named for him ("Willie's Guitar"), but the album's long-term resonance comes not from Rich, Nelson, or anyone else but Anderson, whose rolling, tug-and-release baritone imbues even the most mediocre lyric with chasms of pain. --Alanna Nash

John Anderson is back & better than ever. You can't help missing his sooth voice. Even if you you don't like country, you must get this album.

5 out of 5 stars Not Older...Just Getting Better Fantastic Album.......2007-06-10

Producers of this album had just the right mix of music to portray John Anderson at his best. Just one problem...Why hasn't this album been promoted and aired on radio as it should be? My favorite cuts from this album are "Bonnie Blue"...a nostalgic "Gone With the Wind" reminiscent of the South that even those of us from the North can appreciate. Awesome writing Troy Coleman and John Anderson..."Brown Liquor" which is a great up tempo tearin' up the turf song great co-writers,John Rich and John Phillips, and "Willie's Guitar" which embraces the impact of all three singers on country music today...I like all of these songs...But someone out there better listen and give this performer the accolades that are deserved...Great work John and collaborators ...,Easy Money

5 out of 5 stars JOHN ANDERSON IS BACK IN A BIG WAY!!!.......2007-06-10

John Anderson has always been one of the great voices in country music and since his start in the early `80s has racked up an impressive list of great albums. His distinctive country baritone and singing style can hardly be compared to anybody else in the country music business and on his new album "Easy Money" you can hear that John is still in fine voice and remained true to his sound and country roots. 6 of the 11 songs are co-written by John Anderson and although he has giving John Rich full production credits, this album turned out to be a classic sounding John Anderson album.

With this CD John Anderson is giving you everything you are longing for as a true country music lover. A great mix of songs from strong country rockers as "Easy Money", "Funcky Country", or "If Her Lovin' Don't Kill Me", to toe-tipping Honky Tonk tunes like "Brown Liquor", and "Something To Drink About" until outstanding ballads as the wonderful "A Woman Knows", the moanful "Bonny Blue", or heartfelt ones like "Weeds", and "I Can't Make Her Cry Anymore", as well as the emotional "You Already Know My Love" (which is my favourite together with "Weeds") and the Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard collaboration of "Willie's Guitar" make this album worth every cent. There is not a bad song on here and you will love them all!

Florida boy John Anderson has always been an underrated superstar of country music. Now I am hoping that his new album "Easy Money" will help to pick up his career again and give him back the attention he deserves so much.

Do yourself a favor and get you a copy of "Easy Money" right now! If not, you will be sorry for missing one of the best country music releases of 2007.

God bless John Anderson and his wonderful music!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Effort .......2007-05-20

John Anderson and George Strait are about the only two with a high profile left from the generation of male singers that came to prominence in the early 1980s. Obviously Strait has been the more successful but John Anderson is the superior balladeer.

Here, John Anderson returns with his first CD of new recordings in several years, this time with John Rich of Big & Rich serving as producer. Fortunately. Rich stays largely out of the way and lets Anderson focus on that which he does best, as seven of the CD's eleven songs are ballads.

First some consumer advice. Upon inserting the CD into your player, troll over to track 11, "Willie's Guitar" and give it a few listens as John, Merle Haggard (vocal) and Willie Nelson (vocal & a guitar solo) work their magic on this wistful tale which, curiously enough, wasn't written by either John, Merle or Willie. No matter, as writers John Phillips and Ray Stephenson certainly caught the essense of heartbreak and resignation.

First the "bad": the uptempo songs "Easy Money" , "Funky Country" and "If Her Lovin' Don't Kill Me" are merely okay - worth 3 or 3.5 stars each. These three songs are the ones on which the John Rich "Muzik Mafia" sound is the most in evidence.

Now the really good: The fourth uptempo number, however, "Brown Liquor" is really excellent, on a par with John's best uptempo numbers like "Black Sheep", "Chicken Truck" or "Swingin'"

Aside from the John & Merle & Willie offering, John has six really, really good solo ballads; in fact,I don't think John Anderson has ever done wrong by a ballad in his life. For me the highlights are "A Woman Knows", a sensitive John Rich-Julie Roberts penned ballad along the lines of Johnny Darrell's 1969 hit "A Woman Without Love" and John Anderson's song about about a woman's threat to her wayward husband that she'll give him "Something To Drink About". "Weeds" penned by Anderson and his late friend Lionel Delmore, might prove to be the favorite ballad from the CD for many listeners.

All in all, a very pleasant surprise as I was having nightmares about how a John Rich-produced CD might sound. Fortunately, it sounds like John Anderson being John Anderson, and it doesn't get much better than that

4 out of 5 stars Anderson Gets Rich with "Easy Money".......2007-05-18

Prime Cuts: Something to Drink About, I Can't Make Her Cry Anymore, A Woman Knows

Anderson gets Rich (that is John Rich of Big and Rich) with "Easy Money." Produced by the godfather of the Muzik Mafia John Rich, "Easy Money" ushers the much anticipated return of Anderson on what is this year's most highly-profiled CD. However, long time fans of Anderson need not fear, "Easy Money" is not your mere gadget for Rich to transmit his high-tech gonzo kind of rock-country. Rather, this is mainly bona fide John Anderson indulgent with Anderson's honeyed drawl and wild-turkey twang. Regretfully, thus far radio has ignored this album's couple of singles namely "If Her Loving Don't Kill Me" and "A Woman's Knows." Nevertheless, radio's tepid reception no way tarnishes the sturdy quality of this 11-track disc.

Hands down, the cynosure of this album is in the ballads. Sophomore single "A Woman's Knows," coming from the pens of Vicky McGehee, John Rich and Julie Roberts, is a sensitive cheating ballad told from the perspective of a woman who through her intuition detects her man's infidelity. "Willie Guitar," with its gently strummed acoustic guitars and mournful-sounding fiddles, is creatively written tearjerker that compares the whole in one's heart with a hole in Willie Nelson's guitar. Recalling Anderson's "Mississippi Moon," "Weeds" (which is co-written by Anderson's recently deceased friend and hit writer Lionel Delmore) is a swampy bluesy fiddle-driven downer. Co-written with fellow Music Mafia Cowboy Troy, "Bonnie Blue" has all the charm of the South with an appropriate touch of racial reconciliation in the closing lines: "Bonnie Blue, is your tattered flag still flyin'/Bonnie Blue, yeah they showed you wrong from right/Bonnie Blue, I'm so sorry that I'm cryin'/But there isn't that much difference between black and white."

Of the uptempoes, "Brown Liquor" is a honky-tonk stomper that calls to mind George Jones' "White Lightning." For unadulterated country without the screeching rock guitars, the barroom weeper "Something to Drink About" is insatiably good. However, there are a few misfires: "If Her Loving Don't Kill Me," formerly a minor hit for Aaron Tippin is pretty mediocre for a lead single material. Also, "Funky Country" and "Easy Money" are more Big and Rich than Anderson. Despite the presence of a guitar solo by Keith Urban, the title track, a bemoaning lament about the hardships of being an entertainer is too idiosyncratic. Though "Funky Country" tries to transport Anderson into the age of ipods, but it fails miserably with its ear-popping drums and ill-constructed melodic lines.

Overall, "Easy Money" is posed for great things for Anderson. As a sonic conduit between traditional country and modern neo-traditionalism, "Easy Money" has enough to please both camps. However, as a departure from most Anderson albums, there are more ballads than usual. Frankly these slowies are the ones that steal the show--they show that after all these years, Anderson still sings with his heart on his sleeve.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

4 out of 5 stars complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

The complexities of love provide plenty of opportunity for rueful reflection on the deceptively titled Easy. Though Kelly Willis has shown that she can belt a country song with the best of them, she opts for a more intimate approach on this collection of midtempo ballads. The arrangements are primarily acoustic and harmony-laden (with Alison Krauss and Vince Gill among those providing vocal support), as Willis draws from the songbooks of husband Bruce Robison ("What Did You Think"), Paul Kelly ("You Can't Take It with You"), Kirsty MacColl ("Don't Come the Cowboy with Me Sunny Jim!"), and Marcia Ball ("Find Another Fool"). The singer's own writing extends the artistic progression of her previous album, What I Deserve, with the bittersweet "If I Left You" and the melodic reverie of "Wait Until Dark" (written with John Levanthal) showing how much she has matured as an artist since her days as an alt-country ingénue. Willis saves the best for last with the shimmering transcendence of "Reason to Believe," a celebration of the everyday wonder a baby brings to her mother, providing redemption after all the heartbreak previously evoked. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars In case you haven't noticed..........2007-01-04

You can buy two of Kelly's best albums (Easy and What I Deserve) for $21.98 right now. Easy is a great album and it's only shortcoming is it's over too quickly. I have all of Kelly's albums, have gone to her concerts, and I'm not what you might call a "country" fan (in one year I went to one of her concerts and one of Marilyn Manson's). She was once called the "Queen of Alternative Country" and it was appropriate, her music can touch anyone who appreciates music. Listen to the samples, even if you don't like country music. Click on "What Did You Think" and tell me that isn't sweet and that there isn't some day when you'll want to hear that.

2 out of 5 stars Easy Does It.......2006-03-25

Pretty woman. Pretty voice. Pretty dull. In my humble opinion, her earlier albums are a lot more interesting to listen to. I'd recommend "Kelly Willis" as the best one. If you want a little more twang, then "Bang, Bang" is the way to go.

2 out of 5 stars Not easy at all.......2005-09-01

When Kelly Willis first came on the scene in the early 90's, I was absolutely taken with her beautiful voice mixed with raw honky-tonk sounds; it just seemed right. Maybe she's getting older, maybe motherhood has changed her, or maybe she just doesn't care anymore. In any case, this is one lousy album that never ends. I've often encountered slow starting albums, and those that take a dozen or so replays to grow on you, but this one is just plain boring. I cant hear any enthusiasm, and any country influence is gone? I guess if you're a middle-aged, white, run-of-the mill, affluent, soccer-mom, this album may be your sort of thing. Reminds me of something I'd hear in a Boston or Hartford Coffee House with folks wearing LL Bean sitting around discussing suburban yard keeping or Martha Stewart; moreso than what I'd hear in a beer joint or diner in Texas or Kentucky among the working class. 4 out of 5 stars a unique and touching artist.......2005-06-25

an intensely soulful, passionate and moving work that gives one hope for the younger artists working in country. Ms Willis' sound is a lovely contribution to the world of music. It's intelligent and deftly avoids the usual commercial trappings.

Catching her live when she opened for The Indigo Girls was a rare treat.

4 out of 5 stars Make that 5 stars, please..........2003-08-06

Originally, I only gave this one 4 stars. A year or so and 200 listens later, I have to say it deserves 5. It's different than her earlier stuff, and it took a bit to get used to. I was wrong to give it only 4 stars. Bad Frank, BAD Frank.

Having said that, Kelly has the voice of an angel and is a wonderfully talented songwriter. She shines on this CD and it is now one of my favorite CDs in my collection.

As pennance for my mistake of giving it only 4 stars originally, I hereby sentence myself to a trip to Austin, TX to see Kelly live. A harsh punishment, you might say, but justice must be served : - )))

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars.......2007-03-19

this is the 1969 version of the byrds. the jangling 12-string guitar sounds are gone, replaced by country leanings and delicate harmonies. "ballad of easy rider" is the last of the outstanding byrd's albums. after this, nothing of note would appear. so i consider this their real swansong effort. and it shines. 11 beautifully performed folk/country/rock songs that are a gentle tonic for the soul. the seven bonus tracks added to the remasterd version (which is much, much superior in sound to the original cd version) are good by bonus track standards, but the original album really didn't improve by their inclusion. great record. a must for byrd's fans, a must for country rock fans. a must.

4 out of 5 stars Byrds to Chill Out By.......2006-08-07

I know this one didn't do very well in the charts, but this is a really great record. There is not one bad song in the bunch and the musicianship is fantastic. Put this album on after a long day at work, grab your drink, put your feet up, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Byrds Classic!.......2006-02-14

Along with "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" this album is the most country-influenced album in the Byrds catalogue. But whereas "Sweetheart" tends to lean on classical country, "Ballad of Easy Rider" shows a much broader approach. This greater variety in styles, plus overall stronger material, makes this much more satisfying album than it's much-acclaimed predecessor, which I honestly speaking find somewhat over-rated.

There is a mature and releaxed feeling in these recordings, and though there is a mellow mood in many of the lyrics, it is somehow quite an uplifting experience to listen to the album.

The playing is great, with brilliant guitar work from McGuinn and in particular Clarence White. The vocals and especially the harmonies are of the same high standards that characterize all Byrds albums; great that Clarence White was finally given a lead vocal. His gritty nasal vocals on "Oil in My Lamp" help making the track one of many highlights on the album. In fact, this may be the first album where White really shines as an equal partner to McGuinn, who was now the only original member of the band.

McGuinn was never a very productive songwriter for the Byrds, and here he only contributes one new song, but on the other hand an outstanding one, "Ballad of Easy Rider".

All member have lead vocals, and though neither John York not Gene Parsons are great lead-singers, their contributions come out quite convincingly.

Highlights, though, are songs songs with McGuinn in front. "Tulsa County" is a fine song with great vocals and fine harmonies. Even more breath-taking is their new version slower version of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", and McGuinn's treatment of Woody Guthrie's "Deportee" is just beautiful.

Among the seven bonus-tracks you'll find some real gems. Especially Jackson Browne's "Mae Jean Goes to Hollywood" and considering the short playing-time of the original album, it's a big mystery why this fine recording was left out. Along with the title track song is probably the closest they come to early Byrds-sound ( Younger than Yesterday ).

"Way Beyond the Sun" is a nice country-blues song, which may not be among the most memorable Byrds-recordings, but still as good as couple of the weaker original-tracks. The alternate versions are all fine; especially the longer version of "Ballad of Easy Rider".

2 out of 5 stars No better than a typical first rate country western bar band........2006-01-21

What we find on this album is not really from the same group that brought us such remarkable gems as Change Is Now, Wild Mountain Thyme, John Riley, 5D, Eight Miles High, My Back Pages, Renaissance Fair, I Knew I'd Want You, Feel A Whole Lot Better, Turn Turn Turn, or Mr.Tambourine Man. Truly, by their style, and by these and other unique songs, the Byrds contributed a permanent chunk to American culture. The songs on Ballad of Easy Rider were not cut from the same cloth as these earlier Byrds compositions. Ballad of Easy Rider does not add anything to American culture.

What we find on Ballad of Easy Rider is typical in style and content of any first rate country bar band. Nothing daring or adventuresome. Just some mild numbers, easily forgotten. In other words, it is questionable if there is anything on Ballad of Easy Rider that makes it uniquely "Byrds." If you have some need to buy a mild C&W album, why not support one of your local favorites, and buy their album? Yes, go ahead and support your local music scene.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Latter-Day Byrds Album and, Possibly, Best Ever........2004-11-20

When Columbia Records released "The Ballad of Easy Rider" in 1969, they advertised that "the movie gave you the facts, the 'Ballad' interprets them." How dead-on they were: while "Easy Rider" depicted a democratic America, "The Ballad of Easy Rider" IS everyman's America captured in music. Full of warm, harmonious vocals which rival (and surpass I'd say) the mellifluous sounds of CSN, simple themes, brilliant muscianship, and pure and genuine production thanks to Terry Melcher (a far cry from the orchestrated twang of "Byrdmaniax"), this album is the very best that the Byrds ever made. The aforementioned harmonies of McGuinn, White, Parsons, York, and even Melcher- I think- blow the original line up out of the water...just check out "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." Creatively, likewise, each track differs from the previous yet the album coherently flows and, by the end, simply cries "Help me, I'm lonely!" Five stars for an absolutely brilliant album, one that changed my life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY-THE MANY TALENTS OF ANNE MURRAY !.......2006-02-04

This is the finest Anne Murray collection ever, especially for new fans. While this collection contains her many huge hits which are now classics ("Snowbird", "You Needed Me", "Could I Have this Dance"), her famous remakes ("Daydream Believer", "You've got a Friend"), it also includes some lesser-known, yet equally impressive, gems. Case and point : "Blue Finger Lou" showcases Anne's great vocal range with an up-tempo, toe-tapping, Vegas-style slick rendition. Her sweet, innocent side is in full view on the early cut "Destiny". She rocks out on "Just One Look" a gritty take on the old classic and her voice amazes-it blows away any preconceived stereotype you might have about Anne's music. She is pure pop with "Walk Right Back"-a much superior version than the original if you ask me. There are some Country cuts ("He Thinks I Still Care") and the surprisingly delicious Euro-technopop "Without You" with electronic drums and a very catchy beat-again not your stereotype of Anne's music. The collection closes with Anne as the ultimate Crooner with her take on such ditties as "Secret Love" and "Cry Me a River". The woman is amazing-she can sing in any style, and still come off as being truly genuine. It is a crime that Anne is not a bigger star than she is. Radio is missing out !

5 out of 5 stars Nice mix of covers and originals.......2003-09-27

This British compilation contains some of Anne's American country hits together with some covers of songs made famous by others. Anne only had a few (mostly minor) hits in Britain - Snowbird, Destiny, You needed me and Daydream believer (a cover of a Monkees hit)- and they are all here.

Some of her other country hits are here, including He thinks I still care (a cover of the George Jones classic She thinks I still care), I just fall in love again, Could I have this dance and Now and forever. Casual British buyers at whom this compilation is aimed probably don't know these songs unless they already have another Anne Murray compilation, in which case they will be paying for several tracks that they already have.

Most but not of the other songs will be familiar to Brits via other versions. These include You've got a friend (James Taylor), Killing me softly (Roberta Flack), Just one look (Hollies - originally an American hit for Doris Troy), Walk right back (Everly brothers), Secret love (a UK hit for Doris Day in the fifties and Kathy Kirby in the sixties), You belong to me (Jo Stafford) and Wayward wind (Frank Ifield - originally an American hit for Gogi Grant).

In its way, this is a fine collection that makes a great introduction to Anne's music for the uninitiated. Personally, I would find an all-covers album more interesting than this mix of covers and originals, but this compilation was not designed for committed fans like me. Every song here can be found elsewhere, though you'd have to buy a lot of Anne's music to get them all any other way.

If you haven't got any of Anne's music and are not familiar with her American hits but enjoy covers, you may find this more appealing than a Best of collection.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Where Do I Begin?.......2007-07-15

This is his first CD of newly recorded music (I believe) since 1991's "Nashville", although he did "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" with Denise Van Outen in 2002. The rhythm musicians include Leland Sklar, John Robinson (from Rufus!), Tim May and the CD was engineered by the legendary Bruce Botnick (the Doors, Love, etc.)! This is also the first time Andy produced an entire album! It was recorded at the legendary Capitol Records Studios, the 40 piece orchestra was recorded in Slovakia(!) and his vocals recorded at his theatre in Branson, Missouri. The background vocals were arranged by brother, Dick Williams.
The primary arranger is the magical, most wonderful Artie Butler (who arranged most of Andy's "Love Story" album in 1971) and in the liner notes Andy states that he first called Mr. Butler, "...you go to the best." Nick Hazard arranged "The Shadow of Your Smile" (the lone remake) and 3 songs were arranged by British arranger Ken Thorne.

Now for the song selections: Karl Wallinger (World Party!), for the Robbie Williams (no relation) hit, "She's the One", 2 songs both recorded by Rod Stewart: Van Morrison's "Have I told You Lately" and Danny Whitten's "I Don't Want To Talk About It", the Eagles' "Desperado", Mariah Carey's(!) "One Sweet Day", the Police "Every Breath You Take", the aforementioned "The Shadow of Your Smile" with Chris Botti, Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up is Hard to Do", Chris De Burgh's "Lady in Red", Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman" (from the 1995 film "Don Juan DeMarco"(with mariachi horns, no less), the lone original written by Artie Butler, the title song, the beautiful "I Don't Ever Remember Growing Up", Smokey Robinson's "Just to See Her" and The Backstreet Boys'(!) "I'll Never Break Your Heart". Well, not since 1973's "Solitare" with producer Richard Perry has Andy Williams done SUCH a contemporary album. He states in the liner notes that "I picked 13 of my favorites and set out to make a new record." His voice is different, it doesn't seem to have the "huskiness" and the high notes are a little harder to reach but just for the mere fact that this is his first CD of newly recorded material is just cause to celebrate, not to mention that he collaborated with the best arranger in town, Artie Butler. If you are a fan, this is an essential CD to add to your collection. I wonder how it will sell?

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Been waiting a long time for this one:).......2007-06-07

Well its here at last. I have been waiting for a long time for this album. I bought this album in 1970 when I was right out of college and played it to death. The choice of material and the arrangements are first rate. I must say that I have questioned Vikki's choice of material at times in the past but with this set everything is right in tune. Although not a country voice she makes these songs her own. My favorite is the first cut, Singing My Song, simply beautiful. Tip of My Fingers is also a favorite. There are just too many to name, buy the cd and you will be glad you did.

    5 out of 5 stars Long-awaited CD .......2007-05-22

I bought LP record of "Nashville by Carr" for the first time as an album of Vikki in 1974.
    It was very impressive.
And although I bought several LP records, it was in the condition as it is for the time being.
I was very eager for collecting her CDs from before for a while. Since "Nashville by Carr" was put on the market at last, an order was placed in a hurry. Expectation was not betrayed.
She as a country singer is also very wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Vikki Carr's talent knows no boundaries--BRAVO, VIKKI CARR !!!.......2007-05-20

Vicki Carr gives us 24 magnificent numbers on this excellent "two-fer" CD that contains all the tracks from two of her record albums entitled The Ways To Love A Man and Nashville By Carr. Vicki's voice is rich, warm and vibrant; her vocal ability to sing with sensitivity, panache and sophistication draws you in and commands your attention. This CD proves it.

This two-fer CD starts with the tracks from The Ways To Love A Man; and the first song is the title song for the record album. The musical arrangement complements Vikki's excellent voice as she sings so well about love between a man and a woman and how that love can go awry. Excellent! Even from just the very first track, it already just doesn't get any better than this. "Lincoln Street Chapel" gives Vikki the chance to reminisce about her marriage to a man in a close knit community. The vocals and the musical arrangement glisten like gold! "Gone" features Vikki singing with a chorus and the lush musical arrangement enhances the beauty of this number about a love gone bad. In addition, Vikki delivers "Healing Hands Of Time" without a superfluous note; and "Honey" is a heartrending number about a love that ended when Vikki's persona passed away all too early. I rarely get teary eyed about anything; but "Honey" made me shed a tear--it's THAT good.

The second set of twelve tracks is from the record entitled Nashville By Carr; and Vikki delivers the definitive rendition of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." Wow! "Everybody's Talkin'," from the film Midnight Cowboy, gets the royal treatment from Vikki and this number boasts a fine musical arrangement with chorus, too. Vikki delivers this with a certain strength and vitality that infuses this number with a singular beauty. Moreover, Vikki does justice to "Until It's Time For You To Go;" this ballad about two ships that pass in the night never sounded better than when Vikki sang it.

The liner notes include all the song credits as well as the original artwork for the record album covers. Excellent! The cover art includes a wonderful rendering of Vikki.

It's also interesting to note that despite the country flavor of these songs, Vikki makes them distinctly her own by molding together the country music style with the more traditional classic pop vocal style so many people cherish. Vikki possesses a rare talent that enables her to do this.

When Vikki sings you listen--and you listen closely, too, because few artists ever achieve this level of proficiency enabling them to deliver a ballad with such sensitivity, true feeling and passion. We are all much better off for Vikki sharing her talent with us; and if we're lucky she'll be performing great numbers like these for many years to come. Bravo, Vikki Carr!!!

5 out of 5 stars Crisp Treasure Sure To Comfort.......2007-05-15

I first became acquainted with Vikki Carr's music from listening to my parent's record of "En Espanol." I didn't know that this multi-faceted artist had so much more. Then, I tagged along to a live concert by Miss Carr. I became enthralled with her voice and singing in english and spanish. I then began to collect many of her albums and the two included on this CD. Vikki sings in most of the popular music styles known the world over.

This CD compilation includes most of her country styled recordings. The Ways To Love A Man is a compilation of country tracks included in other studio albums. My favorites are the title song as well as: Lincoln Street Chapel, Empty Words of Love, and the standards of Honey and Healing Hands of Time. Sweet Memories is an exquisite styling by Miss Carr. The second album, Nashville By Carr is truly a country classic known by many fans that have long awaited the CD version. Every track is so exquisite including country standards and songs that I've never heard sung by anyone else. Singing My Song was a single and very well received. Other standards done in that classic Carr way are: Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, Everybody's Talkin', Until It's Time For You To Go, Today I Started Loving You Again, Yesterday When I Was Young, and The Tip of My Fingers. My favorite standouts are: Make It Rain, Living On a Prayer, A Hope and A Hand-Me-Down. Also, her wonderful storytelling becomes a cinematic event with Johnny Cash's, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down. The arrangements still sound fresh and right on the mark.

Due to the remastering of these albums, I call it very "crisp." It's refreshing and will comfort you just like a tasty and crisp buttered cracker to eat. It's really wonderful to have these country renderings by one of the greatest song stylists ever. By listening to country songs by Miss Carr in concerts and albums, I learned to like to sing and appreciate this style of music.
