Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19
"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.
I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.
Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06
The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."
The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."
This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

With this rollicking collection, Austin veteran W.C. Clark again proves that Memphis doesn't have a monopoly on gospel-drenched soul-blues. Meshing Al Green's gospel testifying and Albert King's quicksilver guitar, Clark--a Texas legend in part because of his association-mentorship with a young Stevie Ray Vaughan--skillfully navigates this gutsy R&B terrain with a tough yet tender hand. Fueled by Stax-styled horn arrangements, Clark cranks out jump-blues guitar acrobatics on tracks like Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's signature instrumental "Okie Dokee Stomp." On stunning covers of John Hiatt's slow-boil "Tip of My Tongue," Dan Penn's classic "You Left the Water Running," Joe Tex's "I Want to Do Everything for You," and the Fabulous Thunderbirds' "Twist of the Knife," Clark excels with emotionally electrifying vocals and a dynamic delivery that makes these songs his own. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
DEEP IN THE HEART, is another slice of stunning soul mixed with contemporary electric blues. Clark's gospel-inflected vocals and inspired, lyrical guitar work dominate the album, which was recorded in Austin and produced by Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff. From wrenching, heartfelt ballads to celebratory, horn-fueled Texas stomps, DEEP IN THE HEART is a blistering ride through sinewy Memphis soul and foot-stomping Texas roadhouse blues. With the addition of friends Marcia Ball and newcomer Ruthie Foster duetting on three songs, DEEP IN THE HEART is the most fully realized and soulfully intense album of Clark's long career.Customer Reviews:

Deep In The Heart Alligator
In the guitar-slinging saturated blues market, it is a pleasure to encounter vocalist/guitarist Wesley Curley Clark. This expressive artist is all about the music. He is one of Alligator's best recent finds. His second `gator disc was produced by Mark Kazanoff. Expect pumping horn arrangements that are lively and exceptional. Austin's finest musicians accompany W.C. for 55 joyful minutes. The 14 tracks are mostly covers although Clark provides authorship on three numbers. All songs perfectly complement his happy and glad to be alive attitude. Wisdom-filled lyrics instruct you to live a more fulfilling life.
Be sure to catch the brilliant vocal duet with Marcia Ball on "You Left The Water Running". "Tip Of My Tongue" is a romantic ballad sung like someone who has experienced the same challenges presented in the lyrics. Although the album was recorded in Austin, "I Didn't Know The Meaning Of Pain" sounds like it was created on Memphis' McLemore Avenue. I didn't know they still made authentic soul-blues albums. Austin's optimistic W.C. is definitely an endangered species and the last of a rare breed. Deep in the heart of Texas lives W.C. Clark. The music from this CD will live in the hearts of its listeners.

Deep in the Heart - WC Clark's best work yet.......2004-07-11
Deep in the Heart seems to pay homage to all of his numerous musical influences. Soul, Blues, Gospel and Jazz appear throughout, sometimes all at once. On "Promises",(written by WC) all of the above are woven together beautifully in what may be his best original tune. Other particulary great cuts include "Stronger Than You Need to Be" and "You Left the Water Running".
WC is a great guitar player doesn't need to impress with acrobatic guitar work. There are flashes of blistering guitar leads, but most of his guitar work here is cool, subtle and exremely expressive.
At 64 years old, Deep in the Heart displays the musical wisdom and depth of a lifetime of work. If there is any justice in this world, some of these tunes will get radio airplay and WC CLark will get the widespread recognition he so richly deserves.

Gospel Concert on CD.......2000-08-30
songs there is room for a few I don't particulary care for. There are so many good ones that I'll go down the CD in order from the top. Ride That Glory Train is an old foot stomping "convention" song that features Glen Payne and George Younce (the two founders of the group.) Sinner Saved By Grace was a song written for the Cathedrals by Bill and Gloria Gaither, and is Glen's and George's testimonies in song. Echoes From The Burning Bush is another convention song and gives George a chance to sing some low notes. Still Drinking Water From The Well is an upbeat song that features George. Oh, What a Savior is tenor Ernie Haase's signature song, and was a much requested number. I Know My Savior Is There starts out sounding much like I imagine it sounded like on the early morning radio programs in the 50's, but is brought into the present at a more powerful volume (and eventually faster) tempo. Wonderful Grace Of Jesus is the Cathedral's accapella rendition of the old hymn. I'm In The Gloryland Way was a piano solo by Roger Bennett that he played along with a prerecorded instrument track and as I recall, Scott Fowler on the Bass Guitar. It starts out at a pretty good pace, but toward the end really starts smokin'. Don't Be Afraid was written by pianist Roger Bennett months before he found out he had cancer (since healed). It took on new meaning to him after that, and he gets to sing some of the solos on it (along with Ernie Haase. He also joins the group on the choruses, as well. The Cathedrals also do a few Gaither classics: There's Something About That Name, I Will Serve Thee, and an impromptu performance of Because He Lives (which according to the video) was not practiced. It is one of the best versions I've heard of the tune. Glen Payne's solo fits him like a glove, and the other members joining in (along with Bennett's piano playing) all compliment the song. I only wish they'd done more of it. Hard Trials was another "old fashioned" song that has the walking bass line popular in that era. Toward the end, Glen echoes Ernie's lead and Bennett joins Fowler and Younce in doing background vocals behind them. We Shall See Jesus was Glen Payne's signature song and was done well on here, you feel like you almost are seeing Jesus. As in their concerts, they used the original accompaniment tracks on some songs (with Bennett playing piano along with the tracks), while others were done with only piano and Bass Guitar (played by Baritione singer, Scott Fowler). As with many Gospel performers, some of the songs on here are more energetic and enjoyable than the studio cuts of the same material are.
