2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite Poco, but certainly not everyones........2007-02-14

Simply put, this was the right album at the right time for me. We all have those- albums or songs that came out at just the right time where we heard them loud and clear. Their songs practically spoke to us. Though Poco had put out a slew of records before "Legend," none matched it for impact. By the time this CD was released in 78 there were few California Sound bands still putting out strong music. Though Poco never matched The Eagles (who swiped Timothy B. Schmidt right before Poco recorded this CD) for number of hit songs, much less radio play, as this CD proves they were capable of putting out powerful, catchy radio worthy music. I'll admit this CD has a strong sentimental value to me. "Crazy Love" hit me like a brick when it came out. Judging by how high the song charted, I'm sure I wasn't the only one. Who can't relate to the simple, efficient lyrics that say so much, so beautifully. To me this song is flawless from beginning to end and is one of my all time favorite songs, period. But other spellbinding songs are, "Spellbond" and "Love Comes, Love Goes" both equally potent in delivering heartfelt emotions. "Heart of the Night" and "Little Darlin" are well produced tunes that caught radio play, as this was Poco's most polished sounding recording, if only in sound quality. You'll get debates over whether the material was also as polished, but also like the Eagles, Poco had evolved since their beginnings, culminating in a more pop sounding product that many early fans felt was a sell out (that's how I felt about the Eagles.) Endless numbers of bands have their fan base whose favorite musiic is either the old stuff or the new. Poco's "Legend" falls into that type of debate. They do offer a mere trickle of songs bearing some, albeit a sliver, of resemblence to their previous recordings. "Legend" and "Barbados" are songs where that influence is present. But that wasn't the point of this record. Poco, like the Eagles started to become more the balladeers in their more appealing offerings, as did any surviving remnants of the California sound. This is one of my favorite CDs of the 70s with some of my favorite songs of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Most Successful Album, But Not Their Best.......2006-09-04

This album stands as proof that great commercial success does not signify a great album. Poco recorded many far superior albums prior to Legend, but for some reason this one hit the spot for the masses.

Legend was a departure for Poco for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was the loss of bassist Tim Schmit and drummer George Grantham, two of the greatest country-rock vocalists ever. For this reason, the vocal power that was Poco's long-time trademark is missing. It also marked the transformation of founding member Rusty Young from a full-time pedal steel player to his new role as guitarist/vocalist. Finally, the album is driven by the arrival of a rock-oriented rythm section featuring Charlie Harrison on bass and Steve Chapman on drums.

The primary thing that makes this album work are the songs. Rusty Young's had previously emerged as one of the band's primary songwriters and on this album he continues to shine. As Young himself likes to point out, his songs are simple and straightforward and there is great power in that simplicity. Young also steals the show on the few occasions when he does return to the pedal steel, particularly on Cotton's "Boomerang" and "In The Heart of the Night".

Legend stands out as the best of the post-Schmit/Grantham era of Poco. It did bring a lasting reputation and well deserved commercial success to a couple of guys that truly deserved the recognition for many years of great music.

4 out of 5 stars Country Meets Disco... and It Works.......2006-02-25

The Eagles' wings were pretty clearly melting fast when MCA went full-force on promotion of this slick country rock collection in early '78. (I know, 'cause I was right where I could see all this happening.) Schmidt may have jumped ship from Poco to help the birds' on one last effort, but it was not enough, and the blah around the Troubador Bar after this hit the street was that he'd a made major career blunder. (He survived.)

In whatever event, "Legend" is about as close to the Poco of ex-Buffalo Springfield-er Richie Furay's day as "Frontier" is to the Journey of Greg Rollie's. Given the nifty funk underpinnings (in selected places), portions of it, at least, smack of "country disco." (Though that's by no means a negative comment.)

"Legend" is crafty stuff, and as such, great fun to work over on your Tele or Strat as a comfortable bridge between the dancier stuff you may be used to as a working musician and the goupier stuff those "Stone Canyon Band" guys (and their progeny) were doing in that McGuinn, Frey, Meisner, Parsons, Hillman, Souther, Furay, (Neil) Young catch-all a few years earlier. (For the truly hip: Andy Gold and Karla Bonoff would have found -this- Poco to be the perfect backing band... if they could have afforded it.)

The lyrics here are "good," but rarely "deep." (But, as is generally the case with this genre, they are "understandable," and very much on meter.) There's plenty here some little girl with boots on can swipe to make her mark in Nashville or Barkersfield, however.

I did "Spellbound" and "Heart of the Night" onstage with a country crossover band in the mid-'90s ten-step era, and they went over well. Rusty's writing and the LA-production origins kept "Legend" off country radio (which seems to be -run- from Tennessee), but with country girls being what they are, most of what's here is formula regardless.

4 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT POCO ALBUM THAT CLIMED UP THE CHARTS.......2005-09-25

It was an unfortunate shame that POCO abandoned their trademark roots of the country/folk/rock sound that made them famous; however, it became their first and only album after a few years that became a hit seller for them and ABC RECORDS. This was also the first album with CHARLIE ROBINSON (TIM SCHMITT'S replacement) and STEVE CHAPMAN (GEORGE GRANTHAM'S replacement) and without banjo, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar by RUSTY YOUNG, and this was the last album on ABC RECORDS before they sold out to MCA RECORDS. I wish I had bought the ABC release of this album when I had the chance four months before I bought the MCA rerelease. The sound of PAUL COTTON'S guitar sound like either BAD COMPANY'S MICK RALPHS or STEHPEN STILLS during the 1969/1970 era of CROSBY STILLS NASH AND YOUNG. PAUL'S BOOMERANG has excellent sounding lead (played on a FENDER STRATOCASTER) and slide guitar riffs, vocals, drums, bass guitar, and the clavinet. RUSTY'S SPELLBOUND is an excellent quiet ballad with his soft-calm lead vocals, FENDER RHODES piano, and PAUL'S loud guitar solo. PAUL'S tropical BARBADOS features his out-going lead vocals, FENDER RHODES piano, lead and steel guitar riffs. RUSTY'S LITTLE DARLIN' is an excellent gutar rock song with his soft-calm lead vocals, PAUL'S guitar solos, and the piano, and his LOVE COMES LOVE GOES with the sax solo, PAUL'S lead vocals and guitar solo is excellent too. Then comes the FM radio classic HEART OF THE NIGHT written and sung by PAUL who delivers excellent lead vocals and rhythm guitar, accompanied by the orchestra, a sax solo, and the pedal steel guitar by RUSTY; however, the FENDER RHODES piano do not blend well with the pedal steel guitar. The other FM classic is RUSTY'S CRAZY LOVE with his soft-calm vocals, the acoustic guitars, and the harmony vocals. I did not relized that they recorded these 2 songs until I saw them at the BIG SPRING JAM in 2K in Huntsville, Alabama, my hometown. His THE LAST GOODBYE sounds like PAUL and RUSTY take turns singing different verses and features excellent guitar solos, piano riffs, and harmony vocals, and the title-track written by RUSTY is an excellent guitar-rock song features PAUL'S laed vocals, guitar riffs by RUSTY and PAUL, harmony vocals, and the organ. After hearing all the songs sung by RUSTY on this and future albums to come, I wish he would have sung more of his songs that he wrote during their country/folk/rock era.

3 out of 5 stars decent, but suffers from a frustrating lack of inspiration.......2005-06-14

Timothy B. Schmit left Poco after 1977's "Indian Summer" to join, of course, the Eagles. His departure pulled the rug out from under the group from a songwriting standpoint, and as a result, all the songs on 1978's "Legend" were written either by Rusty Young or Paul Cotton. The resulting album certainly isn't bad and is a clear improvement over "Indian Summer", but it still does tend to feel workmanlike with songwriting that leaves quite a lot to be desired. Cotton offers the nicely funky album-opener "Boomerang" although it's got some annoying falsetto vocals, and "Barbados" also has some nice moodiness though it's weighed down by an underdeveloped chorus. Young's "Spellbound" is an engagingly tuneful ballad with a nice layered electric piano and acoustic guitar hook, and the mid-tempo pop-rocker "Little Darlin'" is pretty catchy. The hit "Crazy Love", also by Young, is nicely tuneful though a bit drippy, and it also suffers a bit from some thin, shaky harmonies. The problems with the aforementioned tracks get to the core of what's so frustrating about this album--Cotton and Young had some solid songwriting ideas, but it's like they either didn't have it in them or just got too impatient to bring these songs to the level of truly high quality. This is extremely noticeable in the lyrics which are uniformly weak--painfully shallow and unimaginative to the point where you often can see the next line coming a mile away. The one tune that's a total dud is "Love Comes Love Goes" which is a sluggish, sappy ballad. Cotton's hit ballad "Heart of the Night" is listenable, but the sentimentality of it is pretty dull. Young's album-closing title track has some nice catchy riffage, but it's frustratingly aimless. "The Last Goodbye" is another track with some nice moodiness, but again, it's underwritten, and at over 5 & ½ minutes, it's impossible to escape the feeling they were just trying to jack up the album's length in lieu of enough worthy material. So, if you see "Legend" dirt cheap, there IS some stuff here that makes it worthwhile, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Sessions.......2001-07-08

I own most of Mississippi John Hurt's works on vinyl and CD, but this is the one I keep coming back to. These master tapes were recorded in the 60's, during Hurt's comeback. The original masters were badly damaged in a studio fire and nearly lost. Through modern technology they were cleaned up and saved...although you can hear a definite warping on some of the songs. However, the pure beauty of Hurt's guitar work and gentle singing style make this disc a muct have for any Mississippi John Hurt fan. Hurt plays and sings most of his classic songs here, and with a laid back style that makes this disc a real pleasure to listen to anytime, anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Traditional Country Album.......2005-10-15

If you is a lover of traditional country songs you need this album in your collection. 2 LP's, "A Legend In My Time" and "The Sound Of Country Music" are here together in one. With songs of Don Gibson, Hank Cochran, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens and Harlan Howard only to ment some, is here a great opportunity to have these great country songs songed by a legend herself Dottie West.
The numbers are not from the hitlist but standard country songs from that time.
If this not is enough get "The Essential" Dottie West.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Island Lines.......2007-02-21

I bought this disc for one rock-a-billy gem....Johnny's version of "Rock Island Lines." Country or rock-a-billy Johnny Horton's music is great and always worth a listen. This disc has some of the harder to find Horton songs without spending a fortune on the big box sets.

      2 out of 5 stars Sigh....We all get old........2007-07-03

I bought this CD/DVD collection based on some good reviews I saw here and elsewhere, having been a huge Poco fan back in the '70s and early '80s. I have no problem with a bald Rusty Young and a fat Paul Cotton...what I have a problem with is the acute lack of energy in the performance. The recent release by Poco of their "Indian Summer" tour DVD shows the sharp contrast of a band at its musical peak and one that is marking time until the end. The only moments of life come when Richie Furay comes out to play some dated but fun material (i.e. "Let's Dance") The rest of the disc is dominated by slow ballad type numbers that miss what a Poco concert was all about. It's fun and nostalgic to see the guys out there playing, but buy the '70s concert disc. There is no comparison in the quality of the performance.

      5 out of 5 stars Successful retrospective........2007-05-04

Poco have been playing under the radar for so long its almost a running joke. Longevity is a thing few bands achieve. Poco have managed it, albeit through multiple personnel changes. Somehow, though the essential Poco sound remained, even after "Legend" took them mainstream for a while. This project was a wonderful idea. Play a generous set of career spanning music in an intimate setting, in front of a crowd of enthusiastic fans ( predominantly male!) It worked for me. The DVD is not spectacular visually - but Poco music was not about the show but the inherent good feelin' of the music. That spirit remains and is celebrated with the addition of 'founding father' , Richie Furay. His contributions to the CD and DVD spark the rest of the band and when he does get to take center stage - he shines! Rusty's steel playing is exemplary, Paul Cottons lead is compelling and the all round musicanship is solid without being spectacular. For those familiar the the entire Poco canon, there is something from alomost every chapter here. My favorites are "Keep on tryin'", "You Better Think twice", "Spellbound", "Kind Woman" and the majestic "Rose of Cimarron". My only regret - I would love to have heard something from "Cantamos" - which I believe to be a truly classic Country rock album.

5 out of 5 stars The best offerings of an underrated band.......2006-11-08

This is outstanding. The band, 3 original members, plus long time member Paul Cotton, breeze through their musical history as freshly as when the original songs were crafted. There is more energy on this stage then bands 20 years younger then these guys. People familiar with the band will embrace this historical recording, those people not familiar with the band will be pleasantly surprised and will wonder why they don't hear these songs on the radio. Great harmonies, steel guitar, dobro, banjo and more blended together to create a great sound. This is a treasure from a band that blazed a trail not only for the Eagles, but for many of the country groups making tons of money in Nashville today. And, one viewing of the DVD will clearly show that this performance is not about money - but for the love of the music.

1 out of 5 stars BIG LET DOWN........2006-08-13

Breaks my heart to say it but this stinks. As someone who has loved this band up until the awful 'under the gun' album and saw a stunning concert in 1976, this is blandness personified. The playing, the arrangements and the songs just don't cut it. The only time there is any of that fire that made 'deliverin''so essential is when Richie Furay comes on. It is quite easy to see this is Rusty Young's band. The day he stopped hardly playing pedal steel was when the band lost their edge as the best unsung country rock band EVER!. His jokes are embarassing (the audience think so as well) and his singing is whiny and flat. The absolute nadir is 'the heat of the night' with added sax which is so dull it makes Jackson Browne seem raunchy. But hold on the extra's are even worse than this dull concert. The interview is painstakingly excurciating. The band looked embarassed and having no interviewer means they (or Rusty) just drivels on about nothing in paticular, all the time strumminghis guitar absentmindedly, in the end the rest of the band look as if they wished they could be somewhere else. I know everyone says it but it would be nice if maybe some early footage could of been added to show the difference. Really this is so ininspired it stinks. It's a shame because some bands even in aging years still deliver the goods ie Doobie brothers, Allmans and Little Feat. The day Schmidt left the band lost it big time (then again listening to Tim's solo dross i could be very wrong) Stick with 'from the inside' the band's masterpiece bar none.

      5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-01-30

Was I pleasantly surprised, yet I expected no less from these guys. Poco is still going stronger than ever! Their performance on this DVD (& CD) is phenomenal! The love and passion they have for their music is clearly evident. The vocals, as well as the strong harmonies of Paul, Rusty, Richie and George are as wonderful or even better than they have ever been! You will enjoy the guitarwork of Paul and Rusty on here. The contribution of the bassist, Jack Sundrud and original saxist, Phil Kensie, fit perfectly like a glove. The production quality of the sound and photography is exceptional. All I can say is if you are...or ever were a Poco fan, this is truly a MUST have for your collection. And not to mention the tremendous value of this CD/DVD configuration.

      Album Description

Forever Inspired, an instrumental tribute to legendary Neil Diamond, is created by a loyal fan/musician who first heard his music years ago, back home in South Asia! Whether you want to dance to the Caribbean flavored, "The Last Picasso" or "Beautiful Noise", sing along with "Sweet Caroline", Samba to highly popular "I'm a Believer", or simply relax to the melancholy "Red Red Wine" or spiritual "Holly Holy", this album caters to your desires. Each song is performed with a unique style with no two sounding the same. The styles include reggae, carnival, Latin, Indian, pop, classical, and more. This debut album captures the passions and feelings of a longtime Neil Diamond fan turned musician. The CD also contains two upbeat compositions by Fawzia.

4 out of 5 stars Instrumental, tribute to Neil Diamond.......2007-06-15

After you've seen Neil Diamond in person, and have all his original CD's, Box Sets, and have seen his movie, then this CD does not compare. However if you want to hum along or sing along with this easy listening CD then it is for you...I enjoy just listening to the songs at night...along with other instrumental Neil Diamond tribute CD's.....I even have a L.P. record a D.J. sample, with an interview with N.D. You follow the scrip on the record cover to ask Neil questions, then he answers them....great for recording to tape, as one would think you were sitting right there interviewing Neil Diamond....so I like anything by Neil Diamond...even this CD....

1 out of 5 stars Worst Neil Diamond Tribute CD Ever!.......2006-06-27

I got this CD for three reasons: A. I'm a huge Neil Diamond fan and love to hear different interpretations of his work; B. It was in my Amazon GoldBox offer at a reduced price; and C. The reviews were really good. The lesson I learned? Don't trust the reviews! If you like listening to etheral, synthesized New Agey music, then by all means snap up this "gem." But if you're like me and prefer ACTUAL music as opposed to VIRTUAL music then run screaming in the other direction. I made the mistake of having this as my ONLY CD in the car this morning to work as I listened to it the first time. I couldn't even tell what the songs were without looking at the CD case because the arrangements were so, well, loopy. Remember those Wurlitzer Fun Organs from the 1970s that were the size of a Buick? It sounds like this CD was created on one of those. The result? A cacophony of noise that sounds like cell phone ringers going off. If you want to get a Neil Diamond tribute, get the recently released Neil Diamond is Forever with a killer version of "Solitary Man" by Crooked Fingers. The Bluegrass tribute--Forever in Bluegrass--is also much better because the music is recognizable and played by a cadre of skilled musicians. But this CD is going to find it's way to eBay...and quick!

5 out of 5 stars Music from the soul.......2004-04-13

Fawzia has mastered her very feelings in this fantastic rendition of Neil Diamond songs. Her musical talent is entwined with her inner thoughts. This was no light undertaking and was captured and recorded by a true talent. This CD brings a true feeling of peace and relaxation. Ms Begum offers a rare and different sound that captures the moment. It truly comes from the heart and I hope she continues to record. I have been fortunate to hear compositions of this fabulous musician and will not be surprised to see a record label sign her. If you do not own this CD you are missing out on a unique and pleasing endeavor.

      5 out of 5 stars Forever Inspired!!.......2003-12-23

I recieved this CD and imediately fell in love. Ms. Begum captured the essence of Neil Diamond. I believe if Mr. Diamond listened to this, he'd also thoroughly enjoy it. It's the kind of music you would listen to if you were in the mood to chill out. Put it on to relax from the stress of day to day things.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2003-11-01

As a life-long Neil Diamond fan, I highly recommend this wonderful CD. This artist obviously appreciates and is inspired by Neil's work. The songs on this CD are perfect background music for when I'm reading or working. I can't play any Neil Diamond music when I read, because I get distracted! These songs are very relaxing to listen to. Thank you Fawzia Begum, your talent really shines through in this music.
