4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

      Album Description

Something to Fall Back On - the second album by folk-rock favorites Berkley Hart is a dramatic and exciting departure from the group's previous effort. Recorded on nothing but vintage recording gear and instruments, Something to Fall Back On is reminiscent of Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, The Band's Music From Big Pink, and The Grateful Dead's American Beauty. The album's 13 songs are as sensitive as they are emotionally charged, and represent a unique sense of optimism and freedom. From the first opening chord of "Come On In," to the final breath of "My, My, My," the listener is placed in a virtual sonic time-machine. Songs like the country-driven "Red Eyed and Blue," the melancholy, yet hopeful "Everybody" and Joel Rafael's touching "Baby Won't You Let it Go," convey a driving sense of purpose and the notion that sometimes its ok to feel less than perfect.

As contemporary pop music becomes increasingly overshadowed by the recording tricks and gimmicks that digital technologies afford, it's incredibly refreshing to hear an album as organic and pure as this one. In short, Something to Fall Back On is an album that will stand the test of time. It allows the listener to capture a musical time period that is almost forgotten, and simultaneously reflect upon the ideas of two very contemporary songwriters. Says Berkley, "We want to respect and honor our roots, but in the end we're just five guys who love to play authentic, American Rock n Roll."

3 out of 5 stars San Diego's Finest Live Act Is Best Appreciated LIVE.......2002-09-02

Jeff Berkley and Calman Hart are fine musicians, and the last thing I want you to think is that I dislike their music. I am a huge fan. Something To Fall Back On, however, leaves a bit to be desired. There are some excellent songs on this CD, but the whole thing lacks the energy of Berkley Hart live. If you are unfortunate enough to reside in an area where you can't see Berkley Hart in person, then you can get a better feel for their own brand of country-and-folk-inflected rock from their previous album, Wreck n' Sow. These guys have a sensational knack for sublime guitar and vocal arrangements. For a free shot at hearing these fellows, go to a website and download their amazing cut of "My, My, My." It's much better than the version on this album. You won't regret it. Then buy Wreck n' Sow, and go experience these guys in concert.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely astonishing soundtrack.......2002-05-26

Whilest no-one really saw "Human Nature", it was a good movie (in my opinion, I thought it was better than "Being John Malkovich"). Yet, whilest hardly anyone seeing it being a tragedy in itself, what's even more of a tragedy is how no-one will buy the soundtrack, despite the fact that it could possibly be one of the best albums of the year.

The most amazing thing is how the soundtrack jumps from genre to genre logically and with ease. Whilest there are many short orchestral tracks sprinkled throughout, many selections stand out. One of which is "You", which is a wonderful jazz melody. Then, there's the small "Waltzes" that adhere to the title very well. Also, the piano/violin movement "Allegrato in B Flat Major" is just an astonishing piece of work.

Yet, there are still some moments for craziness. Patrica Arquette sings "Hair Everywhere", which comes in both it's version as presented in the film and a danceable remix as well. One additional bonus is quite possibly one of the funniest songs since the Avalanches "Frontier Psychiatrist": "My Name Is Puff", which is a wonderous mish-mash of lines from the movie placed over a funky beat (and don't forget the teen-pop-ish vocals on the chorus ["It's an animal urge, Puff / Nothing to be ashamed of"]). The remix is jiggy as well.

So, whether you have or haven't seen the movie, it's no matter. Just know that the soundtrack is something not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate: this may be the best LP all year!.......2002-05-26

This soundtrack is absolutely breathtaking. All soundtracks are made to enhance the film itself; it's a known fact. Yet, there are so many things going on in "Human Nature" (which is an excellent movie by itself), it's hard to believe that one could ignore as much music was placed on this disc.

There are too many pieces to cover. The album masterfully goes over several genres without any sign of exhaustion. From the Patrica Arquette solo "Hair Everywhere" (and it's dance-oriented remix) to the the tender "Here With You", the album is absolutely sprawling. It covers jazz ("You"), politicts ("The Heights of Culture"), and even creepy French interludes ("Fais Do Do"). Other highlights include the nice "Waltzes No.'s 3, 4, 6, 12", the hilarious "My Name Is Puff" (and it's remix), and the breathtaking "Allegretto In B Flat Major".

From funk-pop to classical to jazz to comedy, this is one of the most pleasent surprises I've heard all year. I highly recommend it.
