This journeyman country singer hails from the same East Texas stomping grounds that produced honky-tonk greats George Jones and Mark Chesnutt. Tracy Byrd puts a slightly smoother, more contemporary spin on his twang and has yet to forge a musical identity as distinctive as the aforementioned masters. Yet his expansive, burnished baritone can effortlessly fill the dance floor with feet or your beer with tears. Versatility is the operative word with this vibrant, somewhat uneven 11-track collection that surveys the commercial high-water marks of Byrd's seven-year recording career. With assured confidence, he covers all the dancehall mood swings, from the rollicking humor of "Watermelon Crawl" and "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich and Famous" to the world-weariness of "Heaven in My Woman's Eyes" and the romantic dreaminess of "Keeper of the Stars." Byrd's only sin is that at times he makes it all sound a little bit too easy. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:
Nineties country music to dance to.......2003-09-21
Although there are some ballads, most of the songs are up-tempo ditties to get those toes tapping. There are two covers of Johnny Paycheck songs (Someone to give my love to, Don't take her she's all I got) and a cover of Heaven is my woman's love, but the other songs are all originals. Among the great original songs here are Holding heaven, Lifestyles of the not so rich and famous, Watermelon crawl and Keeper of the stars.
If there is a flaw in this collection, it is that it is too short. A couple of big country hits (First step, I wanna feel that way again) are missing, but Tracy recorded other great songs too - I particularly enjoy Out of control raging fire, a superb duet with the obscure but brilliant Dawn Sears. The addition of those three songs would have strengthened this collection considerably.
Still, this is a fine collection and if you are only intending to buy one Tracy Byrd album, you should make it this one. If you enjoy Alan Jackson's music, you will enjoy this.
Great singer, slim collection.......2002-01-05
Omitted top ten hits "The First Step" and "I Wanna Feel That Way Again" should have also made the lineup - particularly the latter, as ballads are in short supply on this collection. At ten hits plus one new selection, Keepers also seems a bit skimpy (most country collections of late have been offering at least twelve tracks - usually more - with two or three new recordings).
The new track "When Mama Ain't Happy" is an uptempo ditty about pleasing the Mrs. It's lack of success on the charts was a big surprise, since lightweight romps of this sort usually do quite well at radio. Byrd apparently did not want to record this song and subsequently left MCA after this album. He landed at RCA where he's recently had a couple of great singles ("Put Your Hand In Mine" and "Just Let Me Be In Love").
Overall, Keepers is a pleasant collection. Yet with a little more effort from the folks at MCA, it could have been great. For a slightly stronger look at Byrd's MCA years, check out the new twelve track Millennium Collection.

Well-balanced album by one of the strongest voices in music!.......2001-11-08
Byrd shows his true diversity by including one of the most popular love songs and strongest male vocalist ballads of the decade, the No.1 Hit The Keeper of The Stars.
And of course, we can't forget one of everybody's favorite two-step songs The First Step which kicks the album off.
Produced by Jerry Crutchfield (also produced LeDoux), it's no wonder we got one of the best Rodeo songs of all time, No Ordinary Man. Co-written by Bryd, this song still stands today right along with LeDoux's best stuff and shows Byrd's appreciation for rodeo and rodeo athletes. The strength of Tracy's voice is evident during the breakdown of this song where he carries it a capello.
This is a solid album all the way through as we have come to expect from Bryd. Like his debut album, this one also makes our Best 100 of All Time list.

Despite his ability to garner two greatest-hits packages (the former was on another label), the baritone-rich Tracy Byrd hasn't been able to shake his lightweight status, mostly because his forte is danceable novelty songs, as with "The Truth About Men," and estrogen-stirring ballads ("Just Let Me Be in Love"). Both of those tunes appear here, one right after the other, as if to show the dual side of the handsome Texan's personality. If the former reinforces the stereotype of men as football- and sex-obsessed goons, the Latin-flavored "...Love" presents the ideal male as a true-hearted romantic who lives for pheromone highs. Byrd is equally adept at embodying both extremes, but he's even better when he goes outside these roles with songs like Keith Stegall's "Tiny Town," which lets him wax nostalgic about something real. This second greatest-hits package contains new--if less fetchingly recorded versions--of "Watermelon Crawl" and "I'm from the Country," as well as two brand-new songs. "Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman," already a single, plants Byrd squarely back in cartoon territory, while the rockin' "Johnny Cash" proves to be less about the Man in Black than the saga of a hot-headed prole feeling his oats. Still, the latter is another step outside the box, something Byrd desperately needs to push for more often. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

Byrd Doesn't Quite "Hit" It.......2005-02-24
"Greatest Hits" is greeted with an ominous unease: why in the world would BNA Records release another retrospective collection on the heels of 1999's "Keepers: Greatest Hits?" With only 3 albums released since "Keepers" and a few hits and misses, "Greatest Hits" is definitely inopportune and it is definitely on the tautological side. Even the title is a misnomer as "Greatest Hits" is more a collection of Byrd's post-"Keepers" releases, rather than a career long overview. Moreover, with the lack of promotion and a premature stalling of the latest single "Revenge of a Middle Aged Woman" at Billboard's top 40, could "Greatest Hits" be the kiss of death for this Texan native? Is this a tell tale sign that Byrd's tenure with BNA is on the parting trail? Well, only time will tell.
In the meantime, "Greatest Hits" does capture some of Byrd's finer moments. Nonpareil is the ultra-romantic "Keeper of the Stars." Infused by Byrd's endearing passionate delivery, this impeccably written ballad is arguably one of the best treatises on love without given to those mushy Hallmark clichés. Byrd further shows his way around a ballad on the top 10 Skip Ewing/J. W. Barber's "Put Your Hand in Mine." Listen especially to how he wraps his warm endearing vocals around the tickling piano as the different scenarios of friendship and love are expounded. However, Byrd shines the brightest on the album track "Tiny Town," a Keith Stegall tribute to hindsight.
As with Jekyll and Hyde, Byrd also has a more coltish side, which is untactfully caricature and it has turned Bryd into a novelty act of sorts. Other than the superbly catchy Latin-tingled "Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo" which has jump started Byrd's career, none of the cartoon-ish numbers really work. At the nadir is the frivolous "Watermelon Crawl," a track Byrd recorded at the height of the line-dancing craze. If ever there was a song written about women in the same sweeping over-gross as the way "The Truth about Men" was written about guys, then it would have been incendiary reprehensible. The bluesy romper, "A Good Way to Wind Up on My Bad Side," tries, albeit unsuccessful, to bring out the grittiness of Byrd. However, "A Good Way" unfortunately is melodically banal and it does not have the arresting quality as other male duets such as Jackson/Buffett's "Five O'clock World."
As a marketing ploy to entice fans to part their hard earned money, two newly recorded songs are obligatory included. The pleonastic "Johnny Cash" has nothing much to do with the man-in-black. Rather, it's about a couple eloping to Vegas listening to Cash en route. With its curmudgeon sounding fiddling and its copious mentions of the words "Johnny Cash" over some bombastic percussion, this is blatantly a poor excuse for a country song. The aforementioned "Revenge of a Middle Aged Woman," returns Byrd to the somehow novelty terrain. This time "Revenge" tells the story of a divorcee trying to get even with every man she meets. Nevertheless, Byrd does narrate with verve.
Of those have made their assault on the neo-traditional country turf, Byrd certainly has been conspicuously noteworthy. Despite its title, "Greatest Hits" just doesn't do Byrd justice. With only a mere 12 tracks, this is definitely on the thrifty side as far as best of collections go. Also, it would add heft if non-album cuts such as the piscatorial father-son dyad "Pass It On" or the romantic makeover "Lately (I've Been Dreaming about Babies)" were included.
Sells Tracy's Enormous Abilities A Bit Short.......2005-02-18
Also included here are three remakes of Byrd's biggest hits from his 1992-1999 MCA tenure "Watermelon Crawl," "Keeper Of The Stars," and "I'm From The Country," which most Byrd fans already own from their original albums or one of Byrd's two MCA retrospectives KEEPERS and THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION. They should have been replaced by the never released on cd semi-hit "Lately (Been Dreamin' 'Bout Babies"), Byrd's superb remake of the Michael Martin Murphey hit "Wildfire," and the defiant saga "Somebody's Dreams." While the two new barn burning romps "Revenge Of A Middle-Aged Woman" and "Johnny Cash" (NOT about the Man In Black) are undeniably fun, it's a shame that more ballads (where Byrd's warm baritone shines brightest) weren't included on the set to give it a bit more balance and substance.
IS IT TOO SOON?.......2005-02-16
Some hits, some re-recordings.......2005-02-09
That bit of bookkeeping out of the way, the hits are pulled from 2001's "Ten Rounds" ("Just Let Me Be in Love," "Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo," "A Good Way to Get on My Bad Side" "Tiny Town") and 2003's "The Truth About Men" ("Drinkin' Bone," "Tiny Town," and "The Truth About Men"), and show Byrd to be a new-era country singer with a charismatic delivery. He excels on up-tempo good-time tunes that display a fine sense of humor, "Drinkin' Bone" and "Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo" sounding more Jimmy Buffet lite than tear-in-your-beer honky-tonk, and ballads like "Tiny Town" more heart-warming rather than heart-wrenching.

Byrd stays true to his country roots!.......2001-11-08
This album shows a little bit more serious side to Tracy with several slow to mid-tempo love songs including Gettin' Me Over Mountains, I Wanna Feel That Way Again, For Me It's You and I've Got What It Takes. Back To Texas is also another classic lost-love song with one of the best fiddle solos ever recorded. It's short; but, hits you right in your heart.
Well, for the fifth time Byrd has made our Top 100 of All Time. This album would close a chapter in Byrd's career as the last full-length album for MCA Nashville. Next, Byrd finds freedom in a new label, producer and sound.

East Texas traditionalist Tracy Byrd's beefy, muscular voice had the goods and could deliver them. Everyone knew it and that's still true. That said, the faint whiff of compromise has always dogged his records. The need to satisfy marketing concerns with generic songs and arrangements consistently nudges out the edgier fare Byrd is and has always been capable of. Here, that whiff becomes a full-fledged scent. While "Somebody's Dream" succeeds as social commentary, "Ten Rounds with José Cuervo" is yet another predictable Buffettesque sing-along drinking ditty. Byrd himself chose to revive Michael Martin Murphy's 1970s whiny hippie wussfest "Wildfire," but it doesn't fit his style. He recovers with a strong performance of "Never Gonna Break Again" and an enjoyable duet with Mark Chesnutt on "A Good Way to Get on My Bad Side," with the piquant line "A little sissy in a cowboy hat ain't country." True. By the same token, a great country singer in a cowboy hat ain't well served by so much throwaway material. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:
Pulling out all the emotional stops . . ........2006-04-10
And the CD just goes on like that, like a symphony orchestra hitting one big emotional chord after another until after a fed-up outlaw harange with Mark Chestnutt ("A Good Way to Get On My Bad Side"), we end on a note that mixes true love and a nod to the Higher Power ("Keeper of the Stars"). This is pull-out-all-the-stops sentiment, not for the faint-hearted, and Bryd sings it for all it's worth.
Keeping it Country.......2002-10-17
Better than the last!.......2002-08-20
I love Somebodys's Dream it's a Chris LeDoux kind of Cowboy Rock swing song.
Ten Rounds is the Jimmy Buffet-esque party song you have to dance to.
His rendition Michael Martin Murphys wildfire is better than the original, and manlier too!
Summertime Fever is Watermelon Crawl-esque and I am not crazy about it.
A good Way to get on my Badside is a great in your face manly song to sing with your buddies.
The way I see it youve got 11 new songs and a better Keeper of the Stars.
I like 10 of the new songs and just bought his first album to get the Keeper of the Stars. So I am estatic about it all.
The only song I can't get excited about is Summertime Fever.
The Best CD of Tracy Byrd's Career.....So Far.......2002-08-06
I started listening to this CD ... when it was first released. It is perfect for driving because it just flows perfectly from country rockers to slow romantic ballads to fun party songs.
The best single release off this CD is "Just Let Me Be In Love" which was a top 10 ten hit last winter for Tracy. He produced a cool video which took off immediately on CMT. This song returned Tracy to the radio playlists and rejuvinated his career. The latest hit song is "Ten Rounds of Jose Cuervo" which has just reached the top ten also. This song is a real crowd pleaser and perfect in a bar or concert setting.
My other favorites from this release are "Tryin' Not to Love You", "Somebody's Dream" and "Crazy Every Time". This CD "Ten Rounds" is Tracy Byrd's second RCA Records release and it has brought back this wonderful musician and vocalist to the spotlight in which he belongs in. Tracy is one of the best performers in country music today.
Trust me, buy yourself a copy of "Ten Rounds" put it in the player, kick back and enjoy!
COUNTRY'S STILL ALIVE!!!.......2002-07-18
Then at the other end of the stick, there's "Somebody's Dream", a truly serious type song that definitely works here.
Then there's the duet with Mark Chesnutt, "A Good Way To Get On My Bad Side". Definitely enjoyable.
I think I'd pick "Never Gonna Break Again" as my favorite here, but really, they're all good...well, maybe "Wildfire" was unnecessary, but other than that, there's hardly a song you'd want to skip here.

ZZ Top's twangy, hyper-charged Texas-style blues-rock has always been superficially irresistible. The blazing guitar riffs and driving rhythms of hits like "Legs" and "Tush" have made them anthems in topless bars the world over. Yet on this 15-cut tribute, country artists like Lonestar, Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., and his son, Hank III, not only manage to match the blistering, guitar-driven abandon of ZZ's original hit versions, but also imbue them with a measure of bluesy soulfulness. Some listeners will probably be surprised to discover that these familiar songs do actually have lyrics, since the ZZ boys tend to bury them under a ton of metal. While some of these covers are less than memorable, quite a few are outstanding. Along with the aforementioned artists, Brooks & Dunn (on "Rough Boy"), Alan Jackson ("Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell"), and Andy Griggs ("I Need You Tonight") also evoke a tough tenderness that's often obscured when the Topsters slip their sleek hit-making formula into hard-rockin' overdrive. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

Pretty cool!.......2003-11-21
I wonder if any of these artists were really fans?.......2003-03-22
My biggest problem with this cd is that hardly any of the songs have soul. It sounds generic. I think the main problem is that most country singers today use studio musicians, and they play what they are told. So if you tell them to play a country version of a rock song, that's what they do. But they don't make it personal, and that is what is missing.
What are some of the pluses on the album? Well, I have to say that the Warren Brothers did a good job on "Cheap Sunglasses", and I really enjoyed Hank III's version of "Fearless Boogie". "Just Got Paid" by Montgomery Gentry just ROCKS. I was glad of that, because "Just Got Paid" has one of the best guitar riffs ever. Period.
For the most part, this tribute album lacks soul, and in spots the singing is laughable. If you're looking for an album like the Eagles' tribute "Common Thread", you're not gonna find it here. Too bad Travis Tritt coundn't have added a song to this album.
Ignore All The Other Reviews.......2002-06-23
Buy it because you like Dwight Yoakam, Phil Vassar, Bocephus, but not because you want to hear ZZ-TOP. ZZ-TOP already has their OWN albums out. ;) Leave bluesy, humbucking, grungy goodness to the TOPs. That's what they do best. Country needs to be played by Country.
Y'all take care, now,

As far as we're concerned, Byrd is now one of the legends. He consistently turns out great songs with a greater voice every time. And just to prove he's the real deal, he sounds just as good in concert as he does in the studio. That's coming from someone who has seen him no less than 10 times in concert. The Texas veteran returns with a release that shows considerable range, depth, and maturity, serving as a strong showcase for his soulful baritone. Though Byrd hit his commercial peak a decade ago, he's never recorded a more consistently engaging set of material than this. Among the highlights are the reflective title ballad, the evocation of perfect love on "Just One Woman," and the tale of a couple of weather-beaten romantics who take another chance on true love in "A Cowboy and a Dancer." Yet growing up hasn't meant going soft, as Byrd shows in the uptempo "The More I Feel Like Rockin'," the Western swing of "The Biggest Thing in Texas," and the barroom kiss-off "Better Places Than This." This isn't kids' stuff, but it's country music for adults who still like to let loose once in awhile. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

The Byrd Is Back!.......2006-12-24
This is Tracy's first album released from his own label. After a long two year stint between albums, this new album has a few "Different Things" for his "ByrdWatchers."
The tune "The More I Feel Like Rockin'" gets you tappin' your feet and the swing of "Biggest Thing in Texas" reminds me of some of Tracy's older songs on albums from a few years back. The song "Saltwater Cowboy" has some funny lines in the tune, I especially like the opening line of "I look like a lobster wearing flip flops and a Stetson" as this reminds me of Kenny Chesney when he took his photo on the beach.
His answer to "Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo" is the song "Better Places Than This." In which the person in the song is getting thrown out of the bar...after he's probably had more than "Ten Rounds." He talks about being shown the door, hearing it all and "Hearing it all from his sweet angel's lips."
Although this album is different from his last few, this album is Tracy Byrd through and through. In fact he actually picked these songs to go on the album. This is not the typical album being released today from Nashville. Which is one of the reasons why this album should be part of your collection.
If you're a true Tracy Byrd lover, you need to buy this album.
