On "Last of the Great Singing Cowboys," you get an early glimpse into Rex's versatile meldings of both kinds of music, country and western. There are fast-paced instrumental breakdowns, crooning, velvety ballads, smooth trio harmonies, and story songs. The crack backing band, full of accordion, fiddle, guitar, swinging standing up bass, and other sundry sounds, reflect what a hotbed of musical talent Chicago was immediately after World War II.

The recordings are simply outstanding. Rex' voice is the best. His style and honesty come through, big time. I just wish he had continued to record, but I understand the reasons why he, most likely, did not. Western/cowboy music has a very loyal, but comparatively small, fan populace. I'm happy to say I'm one of them. I also wish Rex was still with us.

I have every studiorecordings with Hank Snow in my collection of countrymusic. ( 1936 - 1985 )
And I would say that his music and songs is something great and good.
Sad that Hank is not with us anymore,but with this box his music lives on.
So if you like Hank Snow,buy it and sit down and close your yes and listen to this songs.

Varese Sarabande presents somes marvelous soundtracks from Gene's early days in films - "The Singing Cowboy, Chapter One" features sixteen songs from his rise to superstardom in "horse-operas".

Gene maintained his own coterie of fine songwriters to keep him supplied with original tunes - his wondrously effective singing voice was warm, reassuring and nostalgic.

"TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS" and "BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN" were big Autry recordings and became movie titles...and "GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY" became a classic for him and other recording artists.

Hats off to Varese Sarabande and Gene for releasing some of the most memorable songs from his heyday in Western Films...this is a must have for all "western-music-film-buffs" from those thrilling days of yester-year!

Great Soundtracks.......2000-12-30

As an avid Gene Autry collector I have all the movies from which these sound tracks were taken. The songs on this CD have been digitally remastered. The sound is great and once you have heard them, just remember there is a great movie that you may want to see that goes with each song. If you loved the songs in the Autry movies then this is one of the CD's you will enjoy. It is a wonderful tribute to the movie career of the Greatest Cowboy, singer and entertainer that ever lived.

Best Gene Autry Release, So Far..........2007-01-17

It's kind of hard to believe that America's most famous singing cowboy does not have a more thorough release than this, while many other and far less famous singing cowboys have received complete discography box sets. But as it stands, this 2-CD compilation provides a lot of bang for the buck and a great introduction to the huge mass of records Autry recorded during his decades as America's most beloved cowboy. CD-1 contains a nice overview of Autry's major hits spanning from his earliest years as a yodelling Jimmie Rodgers clone to a more polished TV and movie star. The second CD contains less-popular but even more enjoyable tracks with some really super tunes including "Pretty Mary". There has been a problem with many other Autry releases culling his songs from movies, TV shows and live performances (which would actually be great if the original versions were all released as well) but not to worry here, these are all the original studio versions!!
