Seven Sisters

Larry Carlin, Bluegrass Breakdown, March 2000
Every song on Seven Sisters tells a story, one that you will want to listen to time and again.

Product Description
Seven Sisters: A Kentucky Portrait is an upcoming film by Patrick Donahue that documents the lives of seven sisters born in a small cabin in the Appalachian Mountains.

This Crooked Jades soundtrack CD began as a commission to record the traditional popular music the seven sisters sang growing up during the 1930s and 40s in rural Kentucky. While many of these ballads, tunes, and spirituals have remaind popular for close to 100 years in the Appalachian repertoire, we have enjoyed discoverin their early incarnations. Our focus expanded when less popular ballads like "Letter Edged in Black" and "Pearl Bryan" leg us into a deeper exploration of the surrounding diverse and lesser known rural and mountain music of Kentucky. This music has its own distinctive sound.

The Viennese waltz is never far from violinist Andre Rieu's heart, but you won't find a single work from Johann Strauss on Life Is Beautiful. This time around, Rieu is globetrotting for his hummable, danceable melodies--to solid results. "Ole Guapa" is a tango featuring accordion; "Kalinka" is a familiar Russian tune; and "Amazing Grace," "Snow White," and Rieu's "Glenn Miller Melody" are tried-and-true American. Throughout, Rieu and his orchestra perform these works with plenty of style and polish; it's easy to see why he's such a hit with public-television audiences. His shortened version of Bolero may not be the sexiest available, but it is fun. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Romantic.......2003-09-10

Andre Rieu captures the romantic's heart once again in this, what is for the most part, a passionate album.

I feel the best tracks on this album are the russian-themed ones, like the title track (which I listen to on REPEAT when I am looking through my russian countryside or Romanov family album books). I feel that this and "Lara's Theme" (Maurice Jarre's love theme from the film DR. ZHIVAGO (a wonderful book and DVD)! conveys the passion for homeland which I strongly feel beats strongest in the hearts of all russians, more than than any other people). These compositions are so beautiful that it brings tears to the eyes if one surrenders oneself to them.

5 out of 5 stars andre rieu.......2002-09-04

all i can say about andre,s music is i have over 15 cd,s and love ever one and rate them 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu.......2001-09-28

I am a big fan of Andre Rieu but didnot enjoy this as much as several of his earlier recordings. It didn't have quite the zip as "Andre Rieu Live" or "The Holland I Love".

5 out of 5 stars Music is beautiful.......2001-09-11

As soon as I saw Ravel's Bolero performed by Andre Rieu on PBS I wanted to have a copy of this beautiful album.. classical music that makes you get up and dance..

3 out of 5 stars 'Seven Sisters' doesn't exactly get Seven Stars.......2005-01-02

It gets 3- not 5 (it ain't great) and not 1 (it's not horrible). It's consistant, one thing alot of cds aren't. I remember my favorite song was 'Pop & Television' whom's lyrics are funny but true ("Pop and television truns you on/and never tells you you are wrong/and thats what really turns you on"). Also I remember the reason I bought the cd, "It's all bout the money". Not really sure what it was supposed to be about (apparently the money) but it was an awesome song with a catchy beat. Mostly all the other songs are for the most part meaningless but deliver on it's poppy premises. The only real song to talk about other than the two I've named is 'Do Angels Have A Home'. It seems a little rediculous after a while but upon first spin sounds like a innocent, beautiful confession ballad. I can't say I wish Meja would have done more in the US but I can say (without laughing) that I sometimes wonder what the hell happened to that cd because the highlights (although few and far between) truly stick with you ("It's all bout the money/It's all bout the dum dum da da da dum/I don't think it's funny/to see us fade away...")

2 out of 5 stars Just average.......2000-07-11

This is just an average album full of Popsongs. "All about the money" was the only real hitsingle. Her version of "Intimacy" is just lame. Her songs are not bad, but they are not that good either. No really outstanding song.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy this if you are a native english speaker.......2000-05-05

Nevermind the tunes - they're just your average pop ditties; if you like it or not is a matter of taste. But the lyrics are REPUGNANTLY STUPID. Unless you are able to totally shut them out, you'll be racing for the off-button in no time. If you ever thought Aqua might just possibly be funny, Meja doesn't leave room for such excuses. There are lots of choices in the same music genre, you ought to be able to find something that doesn't insult your intelligence to such an extreme.

5 out of 5 stars This album is a can't miss for the music fan elite!.......2000-04-01

One day I was at a garage sale and didn't see anything that interested me until I stumbled across this album 'cause I heard that Meja was excellent and well lo and behold I found Myself suffice it to say not at all disappointed. Meja is the best and freshest artist I have heard in years. Not only did her music make me feel good but it also made me think. I find that in songs like "Daughter of Mornin'", "It's All 'Bout the Money", and my definite favorite "Pop and Television"[to name a few] that Meja not only has an obvious wide range of talent but also her music is quite poetic, philisophical, and political. In short Meja Rules and Seven Sisters is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Great update of old-timey mountain music.......2002-08-22

This SF Bay Area ensemble ably straddles the worlds of old-time stringband music and the more thoughtful end of the modern-day alt.country spectrum. Their performances and various albums are impressive both for their melodic grace and depth of historical knowledge. The "Seven Sisters" album, which is the soundtrack to a documentary film about the women in a Kentucky family, concentrates on more exclusively on the style's Appalachian roots, while "The Unfortunate Rake," produced by well-known twangcore mopemeister Richard Buckner, has a more modern air, and drifts into hick-music-as-high-art territory which I find mildly questionable. Overall, though, these are two of the most compelling and impressive albums I've heard in a long, long time. The band's repertoire and soulful delivery are equally noteworthy. Highly recommended!

            Album Description

The Bekova recording of the Shostakovich Trio has frequently been considered by reviewers as a benchmark recording against which all other trios must be compared. This piece is at the heart of the Bekova repertoire and was played by the sisters to the composer when they were studying at the Central Music School for Children in Moscow.

Reviews of their live performances include the following comments on their debut performance in the West after the trio were able to reunite in London: “The programme held the audience from their first entry. Being sisters, their rapport was quite natural, but they have something more. Their rhythmic drive is exceptional and also their ability to roughen the sound when necessary, and keep within the limits of good music-making. This was outstanding in their performance of the Shostakovich trio in E minor, op 67, which was breathtaking.” The Strad (Great Britain), May 1990
