Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly Jazz at its Best.......2004-02-01

This is a chronological compilation and the first 5 tunes (available for listening) are unfortunately the worst. Track 6, Bryant's Boogie, is an incredible 12-bar hillbilly jazz foray that never fails to amaze. The collaboration of Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West provided some great instrumentals and flashy improvisations that still hold up today. This compilation includes all their hits and lots of great surprises, like 'China Boy' and 'Lover', along with guest appearances with Tennessee Ernie Ford and other country greats. A must-have collection for any aspiring hillbilly/country swing guitarist.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a must for West & Bryant completests.......2005-07-20

If you agree with me that nobody ripped it up quite like Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West, "Flamin' Guitars" is a must have. I started out with the Bryant & West starter kit "Stratosphere Boogie: The Flaming guitars Of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant" and was so amazed that I wanted my ears to listen to everything by these telepathic geniuses. While "Stratosphere Boogie" has most of the best songs off this box set, the completest will want "Flamin' Guitars." Compared to the one disc compilations, these four discs feature an unusual variety of music ranging from Jazz and Country to Rock, Hawaiian and Swing. Like the cheesy Hawaiian music, some of the material is otherwise out-of-print and for good reason. As with everything on the Bear Family label, this box set is well done and very expensive -at the time of review it was going for $100.00. Other than the price, the only complaint I have is the blurry photo on the cover of the box. How hard was it to find a picture of the boys that was actually in focus? While it's really about the music and not the pictures, it does come with a handsome booklet. "Flamin' Guitars" may be a significant investment, but a good one for the guitar aficionado.

5 out of 5 stars remarkably entertaining.......2003-05-09

It may seem a bit ambitious to consider buying a largely instrumental 4 CD set of guitar-driven tracks from the 50's, but there's a lot to admire here. The playing is top-notch throughout. Dazzling, in fact. Quite often it's hard to comprehend that it's a guitar part you're hearing and not some wacked out synth or novelty instrument. The extensive booklet that comes with this set discusses (at length) the methodology that West & Bryant used to come up with this stuff - a lot of it was off-the-cuff and the result of the almost telepathic communication they seemed to share. That said, these are strong compositions that really rock and go places. Interestingly, the 4th CD is a collection of songs (with vocalists) to which West & Bryant contributed guitar parts. It's particularly enlightening, seeing them sort of subdue their parts in favor of the vocalist, without losing their originality or intensity.

Most of the music seems to have been created at an odd vortex where country / lounge / exotica / western swing / pop musics all converge. It's pretty timeless, and the fact that the sound quality is excellent makes it even more so. I've played this stuff loudly at parties, quietly when reading, at various volumes driving around - it works pretty well for all of them.

If you're skittish about buying such a large set, you could buy one or both of the two Razor & Tie label compilations of the same material. Unfortunately, each of those CDs only has 16 tracks, so this is the better buy (113 songs, an average of nearly 29 tracks per CD). Additionally, all of the material (without exception) from the Razor & Tie CDs is on this box set.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING!.......2001-03-23

If you've ever heard this flooring duo and felt like you wanted more, this is the place to get it. Over 4 hours of killer instrumental country/jazz/swing. Nobody has ever done it better and hopefully nobody is trying to outdo these two partners in speed and taste. They have an uncanny chemistry between their 2 instruments. This isn't just about technique and flash. There's some beautiful music here. Excellent for parties, driving or just plain listening to music that sounds like it's from the western side of outer space. The book included is stunning in it's detail and research. Everything you could ever want to hear, and read, about Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant. Yet when it's over, you keep wanting more.
