About the Artist
Shelley Laine sings and writes with the passion inspired by her Texas upbringing and possesses the entrepreneurial can-do spirit that is characterized by the state’s oil wildcatters, cattle barons and technology moguls. As a product of this competitive playing field, Shelley loves to meet the challenge. Indeed, she has confronted it as a businesswoman, qualifier in the trials for the Olympic women’s soccer team and in climbing the peaks of some of the world’s most recognized mountains.

Laine cites a wide variety of musical influences, from Linda Ronstadt, Carole King and Karen Carpenter, to such contemporaries as The Judds, Bonnie Rait and Mary Chapin Carpenter. ‘My parents brought me up on a veritable musical buffet – classical, jazz, country, gospel, blues, rock and roll – from childhood I began to emulate what I heard and explore my own voice as well.’

"What drives me is the feeling in the music and the meaning behind the songs," says Shelley. "When you look out at your audience and you see someone singing along, you know that you’ve touched something in their soul. That’s what motivates me."

Product Description
Shelley Laine emerges from the studio to deliver a message of individualism and personal strength, not surprisingly, reflections of her personal philosophy.

Back To Austin features a mixture of fun, reflective, and inspiring songs including the hit singles "That Girl Doesn't Live Here Anymore", "Live a Little" and "My Baby".

5 out of 5 stars What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!

3 out of 5 stars A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

5 out of 5 stars Good-time independent country.......2005-08-31

Away from the major labels, there are plenty of independent labels releasing music by obscure singers who are often known only in their own local area. Some of these singers end up signing for labels but most don't for various reasons. In Shelley's case, it seems that she started recording music at a comparatively late age - too old to interest major labels in an unknown singer - but that in any case, Shelley regards it as hobby while earning her living via an ordinary job. Thus, providing Shelley records albums that cover their production and distribution costs, everybody is happy. Without the pressure of finding hit singles, Shelley is free to record whatever she feels comfortable with - and it is clear from the feel of this album that Shelley enjoyed recording it.

None of the songs were familiar to me before I bought this album so it seems that most of the material is original. I note that the opening track (My baby) is by Cindy Church, a singer whose name I recognize but whose music I am unfamiliar with, so I suspect that it is a cover. It is a great song that might have caused me to buy some of Cindy's music if my personal circumstances hadn't changed soon after buying this album.

The rest of the album maintains the standard of the opening track mixing ballads and up-tempo songs of equal brilliance. Shelley shows a feisty side on That girl don't live here anywhere, in which she makes clear to an ex-partner that her life is much better without him. She gives friendly advice to other women in the title track (in which the other woman misses a man she met in Austin) and Feed a promise (in which the other woman is thinking about a former partner instead of her current partner. The latter song has an amusing piece of advice - don't put piranha in a catfish pond.

There is much to like about this album. If you are disillusioned with the country music released by the major labels, you might be surprised at the amount of great music available on independent labels. Of course, the quality of music from such sources isn't always great, but Shelley is brilliant.

This CD has music that would appeal to all audiances. The music is vibrant and energetic, while at the same time, keeping with the Nashville country sounds that the true country music fan will love and can definately relate to. Shelley's vocals are pure and powerful... without question, one of the most talented artists I've ever heard. This one is sure to hit the top of the charts with both, the music industry, and the public.

5 out of 5 stars Honest Fun Texas Music.......2002-11-21

Her first album was great, and this one is even better. "Live a Little" is such a fun, straight from the heart song. And the 1960's make over of "Stormy" is just perfect for her voice. Its just plain feel-good music at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2002-11-15

I love this CD. It has a clean, fresh sound and has become one the most listened to CDs in my collection. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Smashing upwards!.......2002-10-31

Creative and energetic, Shelley really knows her stuff! A thoughtful blend of lyrics combined with emotions, melded with just the right blend of country and rock - you just can't go wrong with this album. I first heard Shelley on her first album, Skipping Stones and I tell you - this one is even better. If you are looking for something that is outside the box but still mainstream, this is it - but don't just take my word for it - check her out for yourself! And I recommend track 5!
