John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening. --Scott HolterAlbum Description

Tribute records live or die by the performers' ability to interpret the subject's work in new and inventive frameworks, or by how well they evoke the spirit of the original recordings. Joni Mitchell's poetic folk and jazz offers infinite possibilities for the former, which makes the notion of this collection by indie rockers, pop divas, and country and folk practitioners most appealing. Not surprisingly, for most of the men it turns out to be more of an intellectual exercise than an emotional foray (Elvis Costello's harder take on "Edith and the Kingpin," Sufjan Stevens's jumbled sonic landscape on "Free Man in Paris"). But there are some breathtaking performances from the women, starting with Björk's wide-eyed cover of "The Bojo Dance" and moving on to Cassandra Wilson's mahogany-voiced "For the Roses," Emmylou Harris's devastating reading of "The Magdalene Laundries," and Sarah McLachlan's goosebump-raising "Blue," where her vocals approximate Mitchell's so thoroughly some folks might be fooled. Hands down, the most peculiar track is Prince's doo-woppy "A Case of You," which nearly defies description. The project got started in the late '90s and was finished only recently, which probably accounts for a stilted unevenness and seeming lack of continuity. Think of this as an interesting companion to Mitchell's vast and vital body of work. But the revered Lady of the Canyon doubtless deserves a far more comprehensive and well-executed homage. --Alanna NashAlbum Description
A Tribute to Joni Mitchell features a strikingly eclectic roster of artists who share Mitchell's fierce intelligence, musical sophistication, and boundary-pushing experimentalism. The creative interpretations of some of her best-known songs illustrate Mitchell's breadth as a composer and lyricist while putting something of a unique flavor on the chosen songs.Customer Reviews:

Because family values and devotion were so fundamental to June Carter Cash, it was inevitable that this tribute album--produced by her son, John Carter Cash--would encompass the legacy of the Carter Family and her marriage to (and musical partnership with) Johnny Cash. The pairings that revive the June-and-Johnny duets are a mixed bag, as Willie Nelson never really meshes with Sheryl Crow on "If I Were a Carpenter," but daughter Carlene Carter and Ronnie (of Brooks and) Dunn absolutely nail "Jackson" with their rambunctious interplay. Among the other highlights, stepdaughter Rosanne Cash gives a luminous spirituality to "Wings of an Angel," while Emmylou Harris will bring a lump to every throat with the closing "Song to John," a testament to eternal love and the afterlife. As June's signature instrument, the autoharp figures prominently in many of the arrangements, including Elvis Costello's rendition of "Ring of Fire." As for June's legendary lineage, Ralph Stanley's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," Loretta Lynn's "Wildwood Flower," and Brad Paisley's "Keep on the Sunny Side" all attest to the Carter Family's seminal influence not only on daughter June, but on country music as a whole. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
This all-star tribute album was conceived and produced by John Carter Cash, the only child of Johnny and June, and features songs written by or associated with the beloved singer, and performed by an eclectic collection of family and friends such as Elvis Costello, Billy Bob Thornton, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, and more. This release will coincide with the publication of John's book, "Anchored In Love: An Intimate Portrait Of June Carter Cash". The only biography of June available, it chronicles her life from childhood to the early days of touring with the Carter Family band, her marriages before Johnny Cash, her early fame, her romance with Johnny, and the ups and downs that followed. It paints a dramatic, never-before-told portrait of struggle and success, and how the power of true love eventually overcomes all obstacles.Customer Reviews:

June Carter Cash :Remarkable, Admired, Rare, & Legendary .......2007-06-10
"To describe the late June Carter Cash as remarkable, admired, rare, and legendary would accurately express the responses she evoked both from the public and from those who knew her well. Yet to simply heap superlatives and ignore the multiple dimensions to a life which inspired such words would do a disservice to such an endearing woman's memory. When one considers that June Carter Cash was a member of the preeminent family in American roots music, on her own merits a talented singer-songwriter who penned one of country music's most enduring hits ("Ring of Fire") and, perhaps what she will be longest remembered for, served as the muse and deliverer for one of the most charismatic performers in the history of both country and rock music, such words suddenly seem less encompassing than they once did." Arik Danielson
Since June Carter and Johnny Cash died there have been several memorials to them. The movie 'Walk the Line' portrayed their life together. There have been several albums of Johnny Cash, but to this date none to celebrate the life and legend of June Carter Cash. June Carter is a member of the legendary Carter family. Her parents Ezra and Maybelle were credited for inventing country music. June Carter was country music even before marrying Johnny Cash.
John Carter Cash, June and Johnny's son,was as an executive producer on 'Walk the Line'. He has penned the book, 'Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash' and serves as producer for the collection of 12 musical songs on this CD. John's involvement gives this CD a family touch, which separates the record from typical tribute albums.
In his autobiography Cash, "Johnny Cash, speaking of his wife's musical talents and achievements, lamented, "Sadly, I think her contribution to country music will probably go under recognized simply because she's my wife; it certainly has been up to now. That's regrettable--my only regret, in fact, about marrying her". The songs featured on 'Anchored in Love' run the gamut of June Carter Cash's career. The album features six songs she either wrote or co-wrote,or made famous.
The CD begins with two of June and Johnny's duets. Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow start with an country take of "If I Were a Carpenter" followed by Carlene Carter and Ronnie Dunn singing "Jackson". Carlene sounds remarkably like her mother, June. The CD features "Far Side Banks of Jordan", a Kris Kristofferson/Patty Loveless duet that is one of my favorites. The "Road to Kaintuck", subg by the Peaseall Sisters and Billy Bob Thornton. Loretta Lynn gives a beautiful semblence to 'Wildwood Flowers'. EmmyLou Harris sings 'Song To John',with a loving and gentle voice. Grey Delisle brings a fresh voice to 'Big Yellow Peaches. Roseanne Cash's rendition of 'Wings Of Angels' is etheral at times. A poignant moment on the CD. June Carter Cash wrote 'Ring of Fire' and Elvis Costello sings a toned down version to "focus more on June's rendition" as stated by her son John Carter Cash.
"This CD is a must have for anyone that loves the songs June Carter Cash sung over her long career. The cast of performers is as compendious as the list of musicians that have played at the Grand Ole Opry. And the performances are all flawless and enthralling." John Gilbertson
I remember June Carter Cash as a vivacious woman always by Johnny Cash's side. She obviously had a life of her own, but she is intertwined within that of her beloved husband. This tribute to his mother, by John Carter Cash, reminds us that June Carter Cash was a woman to be loved and admired for her intelligence and artisitic ability.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 06-09-07

Like the Black Crowes themselves, the greatest-hits collection A Tribute to a Work in Progress hearkens back to the good old days of best-of collections: you get a bunch of songs you've probably heard on the radio a million times and that's it. These are arguably the group's best songs, but there are no unreleased outtakes or remixes to force rabid collectors to purchase the disc for the sake of two songs. This straightforward document of a straightforward band is also the best entryway to the group's fabulous, swaggering, ballsy, bluesy rock & roll--that is, next to their 1992 breakthrough, Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. While arranged chronologically, what one hears here is the Atlanta-based group playing great, unpretentious Stones-, Faces-, and Zep-influenced rock. This music was made for pure, visceral enjoyment, so play it really loud and dance around. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

While The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou movie got mixed reviews, the soundtrack was universally hailed as excellent. The standout was Jorge, who not only had a role as an actor but also played a handful of Bowie songs solo with acoustic guitar, singing them in Portuguese it was a perfect combination of beautiful songs laid bare with a bit of exotic Brazilian spice to add fresh flavor. This collection features the whole of that Bowie session, which means Jorge's six songs from the soundtrack, seven other Bowie tunes and one playful Jorge original entitled "Team Zissou." Even though 2005 saw the release of his domestic debut Cru (which mostly featured his own songs and a band), Jorge found himself touring the U.S. in front of large crowds of 20-somethings who patiently waited for those Bowie songs. This album obviously gives the people what they want, and the good news is that the other versions are just as good as the ones that are on the original soundtrack. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
I Am Sam CD.......2006-11-10
I AM SAM SOUND TRACK IS GREAT!.......2006-11-04
Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21
Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.
Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".
Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.
Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09
The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.
The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!
Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."
The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.
Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.

2007 debut full length from this band who liberally mix Beatles and Metallica musical milestones together into one stew. Yes, it sounds like Metallica doing Beatles songs (and not the other way around). It's a parody, but it's also a party! Oglio.Customer Reviews:
Very well done...not too over-the-top.......2007-07-19
It helps that this is exceptionally well done. It's not merely a metal band doing Beatles songs, nor is it a band doing Beatles songs in the style of Metallica...it is a carefully crafted homage to both bands and their songs. Yes, the underlying songs are mostly Beatles songs, however they manage to incorporate so many parts of Metallica songs fairly seamlessly into them. The lyrics are also altered considerably, with a suitably metal edge (lots of mentions of beer, too). They have fun with it, not taking it too seriously (but not to the point of flippancy).
Believe it or not, there are a lot of fairly nuanced references here. Some Metallica flourishes executed perfectly and merged into the songs so naturally that they are, for all intents and purposes, brand new songs. There are also a lot of Metallica 'cliches' in here as well...the heavily reverbed, twinkling acoustic guitar in the slower passages, the Hetfieldesque "UuuAH!" at the end of nearly every verse, the wild bass solo here or there, etc. There are also Beatlesque touches, with excellent backing vocals on some songs (which call to mind Kings X as much as the Beatles). There are also a few great little straight Beatles lifts...like the 10 seconds of perfect Ringo drumming in "...And Justice for All My Loving" (followed shortly thereafter by a section with pounding double-kick...I love it!).
So, does it all work perfectly? Well, there are a few awkward moments, but no more than a few. There are some places where the lyrics are a bit...stretched (Helvester of Skelter?). But, for the most part, it really, really works well (and again, the awkward moments are mostly lyrical, not musical). Again, it's only because they execute it so perfectly that it works at all...just doing the Beatles songs plain in the style of Metallica wouldn't have worked nearly as well as the way they work in lyrical and musical Metallica-isms.
So far, I've listened to this disc fairly closely 3 times. Each time I am discovering new musical and lyrical references I missed before. No doubt, I will continue to find more. It's also holding up well to repeated listening...something that couldn't really be said of Dread Zeppelin (which people insist on mentioning with this), which was far more 'novelty' than this.
Best song so far, for me..."Ktulu(He's So Heavy)". "I Want You" was pretty, well, 'heavy' to begin with, so it really lends itself to this treatment. But they do this SO well, with all of the multiple parts of the Beatles original suitably Metallica-ized. The soft bridge in the middle, done in that reverby acoustic style (think "One"), is especially great.
Pop and metal haven't sounded this great together since the "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" era of Kings X. If you love the Beatles and Metallica, you will find a lot here to interest you...if you are more fan of one than the other, maybe this will picque your interest in that other band. If you don't like either, well, you'll probably find a lot to ridicule (but you'd be wrong).
I got it because I thought it might be interesting. I will listen to it again and again because it is just plain good.
Way More than a Joke Band.......2007-07-19
Unfortunately, at the time, the band's unique smash-up could only be heard live or online, and they primarily play live in the Midwest, and I'm in the Northeast. Now, with the release of Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band, everyone can hear this band, and I hope everyone does. This is WAY more than a joke or novelty band. The songs do make you laugh the first time you hear them, simply because of the brilliant way they twist the melodies of the Beatles into the stylings of Metallica and then rewrite the lyrics to be a perfect smash up of both.
What ends up happening is that once you get past the initial bizarreness, you find yourself genuinely enjoying the songs, all of which rock hard. If you like the energy of heavy metal but want a little more melody, Beatllica is a legitimate option for you, since that is basically what they turn out: melodic heavy metal that sounds just like if Metallica covered the Beatles, but without the pretentiousness.
A Gene-Splicing Experiment Gone Horribly Right.......2007-07-14
I think the surprising thing about the record is that it's actually something you might want to listen to over and over again. Projects like this can fall into the one-trick-pony category very easily: good for a couple laughs, but beyond that, who cares. But this album is founded on great songs, and just like the Easy Star All Stars' reggae/dub versions of OK Computer and Dark Side of the Moon, the genre fusing just comes of as an alternate way of experiencing great music.
If you like Metallica, and you like the Beatles, it's a no-brainer.

There's a long tradition of artists banding together for a noble cause, but--needless to say--good intentions are no guarantee of good art. Fortunately, the twain do meet and the project even succeeds with creative flair in this compilation. It kicked off the Red Hot AIDS Benefit series back in 1990 and in fact launched its own sort of minigenre, including theme albums devoted to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a wide swath of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to its message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Here, the legacy of this ultra-sophisticated, closeted master of the popular song from the era of the "lost generation" is presented as a source of rejuvenating inspiration. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers. There's an occasional miscalculation (Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop's didactic "updating" of Porter's bon vivant wit doesn't compare well with the original), but moments of stunning fusion abound (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Instead of getting lost in translation, Red Hot + Blue adds a whole new dimension to the art of swellegance. --Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
red hot and sometimes, not!.......2007-05-14
the representation of artists is a cross section of who was hot in 1990 with few exceptions (prince, janet jackson, madonna and cyndi lauper immediately comes to mind--madonna would pay her dues soon though). some of them are gloriously up to doing the cole porter songs justice.
for example, lisa stansfield's 'down in the depths' is elegantly jazzy and a perfect showcase for her sweet honeyed mezzo. and, kd lang can do wrong working her way through 'so in love'. it's brilliant. as is annie lennox's 'ev'ry time we say goodbye'.
others bring their stamp to the songs and make it happen for the pop market. u2's 'night and day' is a great success, david byrne takes 'don't fence me in' on a great romp and fine young cannibals take 'love for sale', which has an unshakeable identity with women from billie holiday to aretha franklin, and makes it a randy boy-toy cruise that porter would have loved!
now, while sinead o'connor and iggy pop made be the last two singers one would expect to take on cole porter, o'connor's whispery boop-a-doop approach to 'you do something to me' is a definite change of pace and pop just says 'so what!?' he and debbie harry give 'well, did you evah?' the punked out once over that again would have tickled porter to no end.
now, if he wouldn't lose his sense of humor on some of the rest, as a listener i do. jody watley has one of the toughest tunes to do in 'after you--who?'. and a sense of humor or a little help from elton john might have saved her. as is her apporach is too studied and careful. and i don't get salif keita's 'begin the beguine'. this is one of the songs that needed to be sung because of its lusicious melody. and i like rap as much as the next person but i have to concede the point that porter's lyrics don't need reconception as raps.
A CD I still listen to regularly after years.......2007-02-19
The artists have different styles, so you'll probably like some tracks much more than others. I think they're uniformly good with some standouts, such as Annie Lennox's Everytime We Say Goodbye.
Interesting tribute developing now it's own classic status........2006-07-18
The songs and artists here are a sound spread of genre. Sung in either classic form or as refreshing reworkings. On the whole it works well with a few unfortunate exceptions.
It is well worth adding to a discerning collection. My personal favourites are those which by and large retain their classic quality, Annie Lennox, K D Lang and Lisa Stansfield do beautiful interpretations of their chosen songs. Andy Bell and David Byrne add twists which work to great effect. It is a certainty that the album is developing it's own classic status as time moves on, it was origianlly released in 1990. The perfect tribute at the time and a mark of how far we have come in an effort to fight HIV. The songs howevr in my opinion need little tinkering or adjustment since they were and are beautiful, it is a shame some of the artists chose to rework certain songs so heavily.
FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS THE BEST SONG.......2006-05-21
LOVE FOR SALE BY THE FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS. THE CANNIBALS
NOT ONLY DO JUSTICE TO COLE PORTER'S LEGACY, THEIR PERFORMANCE
ILLUSTRATES PORTER'S SONGWRITING BRILLIANCE. ROLAND GIFT NAILS THE SONG'S MOODS AND THE ACCOUSTIC TOUCH IS ON TARGET FOR THIS SONG. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE CANNIBALS ONLY MADE A COUPLE ALBUMS, BUT LOVE FOR SALE IS ARGUABLY THEIR FINEST SONG, AND REASON ENOUGH TO BUY THIS CD.
Ridiculous blended with the sublime.......2006-02-26
Some of the cuts are excellent. Sinead O'Connor needs to do more standards. Annie Lennox can sing anything and I'll love it. Tom Waits, on the other hand, sounds best singing his own music. Song samples listed on the Amazon web page give the best segments of the songs, not a representative sample. So, if you enjoy experimenting, or can afford to buy a whole CD for a few good tracks, get this CD. If you want an album of Porter's standards this is not for you.
