Guitar solos and nothing but. Meticulously culled and assembled by Zappa from live recordings made between 1979 and 1980, this three part set features some of the most dynamic and musical guitar work recorded anywhere by anyone. From the rhythmically dazzling "five-five-FIVE" to the unique lyricism of the three title tracks, Zappa proves beyond doubt that he belongs among the most elite of rock's guitar virtuosos. The remarkable interplay between Zappa and Vinnie Colaiuta--some consider this to be the drummer's best work--provides this album with some of its most memorable moments. --Andrew Boscardin

4 out of 5 stars cheezy box.......2007-02-02

I thought a boxed set would have a better box and real disk cases not paper.
The music wasn't as good as expected either. Franks later works are more tidy than the sometimes "at a loss of cords" jumble. Still good jams though.

5 out of 5 stars I don't want to shut up.......2006-12-05

I don't want to shut up because I want to say that this album contains some very beautiful music, even if some moments are ugly like the solo in Heavy duty Judy but it's Zappa you know, completly unpredictable. I prefer this one to "Guitar" album a lot. Guitar is a lot less interesting overall and this one represents Frank in his very deep soul to me. If you don't know what to buy among the two, buy this one for sure. About the music. It is only instrumental music. No words, no songs. Zappa complained at the time that in America you should have songs with words to be considered, and heard... but luckly he decided a lot of times to put out things like this one, a three records box of instrumental music and guitar stuff (with monsters musicians that played with him). I, as a competent Jazz guitarist, am not particularly shocked or impressed by Zappa's technique, on the contrary I absolutly don't consider him a virtuoso, but a quite "original" and unusual musician. A true naif of the instrument. He was a naif on the guitar, not a technician, a scientist of the instrument, or a perfectionist. But he, in his quite weird way, did communicate things. And this is what does it count. And I love to hear him play. But I think that his most important things are on the compositional side not as instrumentalist. But nevertheless I really appreciate this album. There are quite interesting tunes, textures, musical soundscapes and guitar solos. The packaging is well done even if I don't go crazy for paper boxes (they can be ruined easily). Inside you will find the three albums in their "original" cover artwork which is a strong plus for collectors. It is sure an important box in the immense Zappa's catalogue, full of masterpieces. I can suggest the purchase of this one absolutly. Go, do it!

5 out of 5 stars If you like music, buy this!!!.......2006-10-23

shut up and play yer guitar is a 3 cd set which includes some fantastic compositions by FZ.Not only are the guitar solos mesmerisingly magnificent, the bass and drums are beautifully performed also.Iwould reccommend this to anybody interested in the life and times of FZ as there is plenty of stunning guitar work on it.In short, just buy it,listen to it and enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars Best of Zappa's Guitar Work........2006-07-28

What I like is the range of bizarre guitar sounds on the record and Frank's use of the guitar as a melodic instrument, like a jazz saxophone, instead of just a "rock out" guitar solo that is part of a regular song. The variety of guitar tones he gets are pretty amazing and fun to listen to.
He has this crazy natural abillity that is present in his solos. Every once in a while during a solo, he will hit the most beautiful note that you never even thought he could throw in, but he does it and i am amazed every time.
The title track is cool, so is Five-Five-Five, and I believe Steve Vai had some part in this record. I only have the tape, it's a 20 year old cassette. Treacherous Cretins is pretty cool too. A classic.

Sunset Rubdown's music is lo-fi, shell-shocked, dissonant, and very reminiscent of David Bowie/Brian Eno's post-apocalypse fixation, circa Station to Station. The images and music that singer Spencer Krug has put to tape tell of futility and disconnectedness through his warbled, pained singing--a style that almost distracts too much from the music. It's similar to the way that Conor Oberst's rawness sometimes overwhelms Bright Eyes. However, there are standouts like "I'm Sorry That I Sang on Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave," where a weirdly gorgeous meditation over a click-track coughs up a glimmering loneliness. On "The Men Are Called Horsemen There" glam and drama are dialed all the way up and mixed with a heavy Spectorian wall of sound. "Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings" swirls with tension, then opens into an '80s New-Romantic sad dance party. Employing unusual instruments, off-kilter arrangements, and an all-around herky-jerky feel, the album is intriguing and unsettling, not unlike Krug's other projects, Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade. --Gabi Knight

4 out of 5 stars Wolf Parade is radical..........2007-05-14

If you like wolf parade you'll like this album...I like spencer's voice, I don't know why but it reminds me of david bowie.

4 out of 5 stars More than a side project..........2007-03-27

I found out about this group the same way that many others most likely have: I listened to Wolf Parade, wanted more and realized that singer/songwriter/keyboardist Spencer Krug had another band.

That band is Sunset Rubdown and while it is quite different than Wolf Parade (it's softer and more musically sparse), it still contains the unmistakeable love-or-hate vocals that Krug supplies for both groups. But if you loved Krug's somewhat-strained delivery on Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary then you'll likely enjoy this side project of his.

The album does need quite a few listens for it to really grow on you but I instantly loved such tracks as "Us Ones In Between" with it's cryptic and poetic lyrics and it's simple piano melody. "I'm Sorry I Sang On Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave" has a wonderfully eerie, carnival-like, music-box esque charm to it that makes it stand out from the rest of the album. And finally, "The Men Are Called Horsemen There" and "Snakes Got a Leg III" give the album its most musically intense moments.

I have to mention that Sunset Rubdown also has an LP and an EP that were released prior to this. I absolutely love the EP. I highly recommend trying to find it and if you do - buy it! It has 5 tracks and they are all fantastic. I especially love "Three Colours". While "A Day in the Graveyard" parts I and II are probably the two best songs written and recorded by the band.

5 out of 5 stars Rivals the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" in terms of beauty.......2007-01-09

Simply put, this is a beautiful album. For the longest time, the Arcade Fire's "Funeral" stood on its own as the most beautiful album in my collection. Sure, many albums have beautiful songs - even several beautiful songs, but no albums until "Shut up I Am Dreaming" have struck me as comparable to "Funeral", and that's saying a lot.

I'd now like to address the spotlight reviewer. Musicans/ artists (esp. good ones) create from their heart. Sometimes a lot of people like their contribution and they are recognized i.e., fame, and sometimes their contribution never catches on. However, it is insulting to insinuate that this is "music for the scenesters" like spencer championed them as his key demographic. I am 26 and far from a scenester kid, yet I enjoy this music very much. It's like insinuating that pink floyd made music for drug users. The fact that scenesters may (or may not) like this album is just a side-effect; scenesters weren't the impetus for its creation.

This is an album for anyone that appreciates a beautiful piece of work, be it a scenester, a stoner, or a conservative, etc.

5 out of 5 stars My top release of 2006.......2006-12-22

I cannot state more emphatically that Sunset Rubdowns album is my pick for album of the year, not just for how surprisingly good it is to anyone that enjoyed Wolf Parade's incredible debut but because it is simply inspiring from start to finish. As a whole this is the most delightful kind of album, the one you wish everyone's side-band would put out to keep the enthusiasm going. The fact that it will remain under almost everyone's radar is not entirely bad, as it leaves it open for discovery many, many years down the road.

All Time Low are a great band composed of 4 guys who just graduated high school in 2006. I have a feeling something huge is going to happen with them. This is one of those CDs that you put in your stereo and you can listen to the whole thing from start to finish without skipping any tracks. Catchy lyrics and melodies too. I highly recommend you check this band out if you like Cute is What we Aim For, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is, Hit the Lights, All American Rejects, etc. This deserves more than 5 stars!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-01-03

I think David Cross is about the funniest guy ever. This disc is not that good. Couple chuckles here and there and long stretches of rambling unfunniness in between.

1 out of 5 stars Not funny.......2006-12-14

Many people tackle social issues with their entertainment. Many people do it well. For example Bob Dylan wrote (writes) great songs that addressed current issues. David Cross tries to do the same thing with comedy, which is a nice idea. But his jokes are not funny. Nice idea, but drawn out, repetitive, and boring. Not funny.

3 out of 5 stars Comedy is subjective, but this barely cuts it........2006-11-13

This CD is stuck under the humor section, and true to form, you'll find stand-up in it. But it's a kind of humor that doesn't lend itself well to an audio CD. It's entirely possible that seeing David Cross live, you might be able to pick up on his enthusiasm, and it might make some of his satire seem more convincing. Here, though, the material comes off more as a series of rants, and frankly, fueled by stock cynicism rather than a genuine desire to see change in his topic of choice.

He's unafraid to speak his mind, which makes his criticism stronger, but because he seems to take everything so damn seriously, it's more difficult for an audience to laugh.

As comedy goes in general, there's three aspects of it that can help it to succeed or fail.

1. The joke substance (irony/absurdity)
2. The timing
3. The delivery

With Cross, there's plenty of the irony and absurdity in his source material. However, his timing and his delivery suffer because he tends to go back over the same material a few times, trying to drive the point home. In fact, Cross' solution in many cases on the CD seems to be to compensate for a lack of laughs by becoming more furious.

This works for some comedians, like Lewis Black, but then, Lewis Black's career has flourished because he has a stage presence, or persona-- one which his audience is familiar with, and one that provides them a way to pick up on his delivery every time. Cross seems to operate more in a free-flowing, stream of consciousness way, making it more difficult for the audience to find definitive punchlines.

In short, my impression is that Cross seems to be performing more for his own peace of mind than to entertain others. That's a perfectly fine way to express oneself in a blog, where ranting and criticism are par for the course, and in truth Cross comes off as a fairly good satirist, but an audio CD highlights Cross' lack of stage presence.

Buy this CD if you want cathartic and sometimes chuckle-worthy social criticism, but not if you want a CD that is "entertaining," in the traditional sense of the word.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2006-07-06

David Cross is so funny. I love when he does his Atlanta accent. He's one of the more intelligent comedians out there too.

5 out of 5 stars Review from a cranky terrorist!.......2006-03-23

David Cross is well known. Sort of.

I usually remind others about him through movies like "Pootie Tang" and "Scary Movie 2". These movies have their funny parts, but they kind of mask the person that is David Cross. He started his career with standup, as a teenager. He's been a wonderfully insightful and funny comedian for over two decades, and this CD set is one of the best comedy albums of all time.

The CD set itself is very adventurous. A two CD standup set from almost any other comedian would seen overblown and pretentious, and you have to give it to David for having the balls to not cut this tour's material down to one disc. It's long, yes, but it doesn't wear out its welcome, and Mr. Cross tackles so many topics that nearly everyone is to find something they love (and maybe even hate) in this set.

He discusses his childhood; growing up in Roswell Georgia ("the whitest place in America"), and how his Jewish family was treated by locals, that "for a lack of a better term" are called Southern Baptist. He also discusses 9/11 (he lived, and still does, in NYC), and the effect it had on America in the way of crass commercialization ("have flags grafted on the inside of your eyelids so that at all times you have flags!") and neurotic patriotism.

The two best tracks are at the end of the second disc, where he discusses at length a drunken ordeal with the band Harlow, preceded by a mockery of rambunctious radio DJ's, and the track after, which discusses "the Promise Keepers" and their writings about events that "you know never happened".

[...] I'm only kidding.

There's very little wrong with this set, and the length of the tracks is not a problem. David has a great ability of building up tension and timing his jokes with great precision (any comedian will tell you that timing is a comedians most powerful tool). And while he says the "F-word" an awful lot, he uses it in such careful ways, as to punctuate an emotion he's feeling that may have not come through during the tension building I mentioned above. A parallel could almost be made here with Richard Pryor and the word "nigger"; something he struggled to get over in his childhood, and finally added to his arsenal, bringing about a revolution in comedy.

Today, there are hundreds of mediocre one-trick-pony comedians that work clubs day and night pulling out dick jokes (think of who Bill Hicks used to make fun of) and clever commentary on racism. This has been done a thousand times, but David Cross (along with others who I plan to review) gives us something more to think about; he brings issues to the front (once again, as Hicks did, but not to that extent) while providing great, hilarious examples of real life experiences using a great (and funny sounding) speaking voice.

These two discs are pricless to me- my friends and I still quote them all the time. The issues are also still relevant, and the discs require more than one listen to fully appreciate (there is alot of material here, after all). I really can't recommend any other working comedian over David Cross.

2 out of 5 stars Live album with overdubs.......2005-06-18

This is a live CD that has been overdubbed in parts due to "technical difficulties". It gives the CD a strange sound, like someone playing along to their favorite songs.

This is Steve Earle just before he fell completely over the deep end. Normally, that might not be a bad thing. People like Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan have actually lost thier spark once they cleaned up. Sad to say, but some of the greatest music of all time comes from the drug addicted, including Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.

But, the problem with Earle is that he may have been too far gone. The other guys kept it under control and let it out in their music. Earle is paranoid and edgy.

Because of the sound problems and the performance, this not a great live CD. I think the studio versions of these songs are much better.

Earle does have a lot to say. But, I'm not sure that I always agree with Earle's good ol' boy, loser, paranoic view that the world is out to get you and that there is nothing you can do. I am also not so sure about his anti-death penalty stance. I don't favor making sympathetic characters out of murderers.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Earle's best.......2003-10-28

There is a generous amount of music--over 74 minutes which is a lot for the typical Steve Earle CD but you can find better renditions of these songs on his other CDs. Get Guitar Town and Copperhead Road if you want to hear most of these songs done in a studio. Also, I had eagerly anticipated hearing Earle's version of Dead Flowers but it isn't nearly as good as the original by The Stones.

3 out of 5 stars Raw and ragged.......2003-01-03

This is a loose collection of live Earle music circa 1991. The band is just going through the motions and Earle's voice is at its most ragged, but it still remains an interesting time capsule of where Earle's career was at the time and some of the songs really thrive in the live setting. A good summation of Earle's earlier work and glimpse of an artist close to the edge of self destruction. Probably not the best example of his ability but an intriguing look at an artist whose life has had more than a few ups and downs.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Live CD.......2002-03-15

Recorded during a Canadian tour of the early 90's, this appears to be a fan's dream: a greatest hits package recorded live with Earle and the experienced Dukes performing at their peak-Earle, however, was in the depths of his drug addiction during this tour, so the performances are restless at best. A live reference to an incident in Ottawa points to Earle's growing spirit of social conscienceness. His stellar writing rescues this project, with new tour staples such as the anti-death penalty anthem "Billy Austin," the auto-biographical "I'm The Other Kind," and "West Nashville Boogie," (all from "The Hard Way") providing shining moments. A teasing "Guitar Town" is tell-tale: there are only shreds remaining of the exhuberant 27-year-old laureate who took the country and rock communities by storm only 4 years earlier. Most frightening is a transcending, gut-level version of Jimmy Rogers' "Blue Yodel #9," showing that Earle remembers from whenst he came, but leaving the listener wondering where Earle is going. Or if he'll survive the journey.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite live-recordings ever........2001-12-14

This is THE essential Steve Earle recording. The set is stellar and the Dukes just flat-out rock live. Steve may have been a strung-out addict at the time but he sure does deliver. In fact, there isn't a trace of half-assing here. He does it all with heart and the gruffness in his voice gives tunes like "Billy Austin" an even bigger impact. I really loved the live version of "the Rain Came Down" and "Fearless Heart" has never sounded better.

This is one of the first cds I ever bought (I was eleven) and after a decade, it has yet to lose it's charm. The only difference, is now, I'm quite a bit older and the songs have much more meaning.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat, Lively Album, But How Would Randy And Simon Rate It?.......2007-03-20

I had heard "Cold Hearted" and "Straight Up" for a while before learning it was done by Paula.

Many of the other reviewers pointed out this is a good aerobic project. Allow me to mention what I noticed. There are eight cuts on it. The first seven are individual songs. The final one is a seven song medley which includes six of the seven songs already mentioned. ("One Or The Other" is not part of the medley, and is replaced by "State Of Attraction".)

If you want some good dance music, you would enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Album.......2005-10-16

I've owned this collection of remixes for over 10 years and I still love to listen to it. Every song rocks. Now that her career has been revised by American Idol, I'm listening to it even more.

5 out of 5 stars The Way A Remix Album Should Be.......2003-11-07

This is a masterpiece!!! Even though I actually first purchased this album in 1990 (13 years ago) It still sounds good in today's age - The remixes on this album are so tight using old school techniques that it gave new life to the #1 hits from Paula's Forever Your Girl Album - You can't find remixes like this anymore because in today's world, a remix just either involves a rapper adding his touch to the song or a club mix that just adds 5 mintues of extra music at the beginning of the it, and what's so genious about that - This remix album is the format artists should now be using -

4 out of 5 stars Decent Single.......2007-05-29

The Shut Me Up single is far better than MSI's last single, the Straight to Video Remixes. The reason why the SMU single is better is because:

1.) Shut Me Up is, in my opinion, a far better song than Straight to Video.
2.) Only three remixes of the song, unlike how the Straight to Video CD has 15.
3.) The original "crappy demo" of the song, which is almost as good as the final version.
4.) Two new songs! The cover of Notorious BIG's "Big Poppa" is hilarious, and is reminiscent of the band's "Bring the Pain" cover on Tight. "Adios Amigos" is alright, but hard to understand at times.

My only problem with the single is that the third Shut Me Up remix is not very enjoyable, and there are two remixes of Straight to Video. Although the remixes are decent, didn't we already get more than enough on the actual Straight to Video single?

this is what mike mantione knows -- forget all the stuff he's playing now (even if you have heard) -- this is it -- smart, crazy and smashin' like that hunk of love you swooned for at yr. senior prom -- only difference is, this album won't leave you high and dry -- turn up 'goddammit paul' or 'destroy this world' and tell me i'm wrong, i'd love to hear from you --

4 out of 5 stars Powerful as a buzz saw.......2003-03-20

I cannot believe no one has reviewed this album. This Athens band has been around for twelve years, without ever receiving any kind of airplay.
This is on of my favorite CD's. The energy in this recording is just incredible. Mike Mantione displays more heartfelt emotion than any singer I have ever heard that plays a similar type of music.
The music just throbs with honest energy which is oh so hard to find these days. Think Replacements with a harder edge. The only song that is not great is the cover of a Lou Reed called 'I Can't Stand It.'
'She's Dropping the Bomb' should have been a huge hit the way 'Rockaway Beach' should have been big for the Ramones. The lyrics can be really dark especially 'G------- Paul' which deal with a friends death and his mental anguish. But don't let that stop you from getting this.
All the songs absolutely rock and this cd will always hold a special place as one of my absolutely favorites.
THIS IS A FANTASTIC CD. Remember just because you don't hear music played on the 'cookiecutter' radio stations that seem to be everywhere, doesn't mean it isn't good. Half the fun is seeking out bands like this. Every once in a while you can luck up and find a 'diamond in the rough'.

4 out of 5 stars I like it.......2006-05-09

I really like this album. I wonder if Kelly's relation to Ozzy and The Osbournes TV show did more to hurt her music career than help it... seems like a lot of people just like to bash Kelly because of that stuff. The Shut Up album is pop-punk with total Kelly attitude. The sound reminds me of the band Hole. Kelly's voice is strong within her range, and she really shines on the song "More Than Life Itself," which is my favorite track. If you like good 'ol rockin fun pop punk rock, this is a great CD in that genre. Standout tracks include More Than Life Itself, Papa Don't Preach, Come Dig Me Out, and Disconnected.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good .......2006-03-19

All the songs on this CD are all 5/5, except Papa Don't Preach, which is 3/5. This cover song is OK, but Madonna is awesome, and did it way better!

4 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Surprise - It's Good.......2005-10-25

It seems that there are plenty of people who dislike this album, and dislike Kelly Osbourne in general. I must say though, that I really enjoy this disc, and I really like her style. She's bringing something new to the genre, but not overdoing it. She knows what kind of music she's doing, and it's not exactly pop, not exactly rock, but she does it well. I purchased the cd on a whim when I saw it at the used cd shop. I just got the feeling that it might be good - and it was. However, it seems most people hate the song "Shut Up," which must have had extensive radio play or something ... I wouldn't know - I never listen to the radio myself. Personally, I like that song a lot too.

4 out of 5 stars Kelly.......2005-07-26

OK, everybody is giving Kelly hell because of this album, but to be honest, I really really really liked it! I love the "Come dig me out" song! It's so great! She kindof reminds me of Blondie - and I think her second album definatly shows that. Kelly has real potential!

1 out of 5 stars Kelly should take her own advice. .......2005-07-23

Please...

Do what your album title says. It would make the world a better place.

The "tracks" on L.A.-based house DJ Richard "Humpty" Vission's aptly titled album, his sixth full-length release, come fast and furiously, just as they should from a master turntablist. Ten minutes into the disc, the man has already moved through 12 or 13 songs. The flow is complex but undeniable as he throws the needle down on yet more wax, tossing records around like Frisbees. And he doesn't let himself get bogged down with just house music--he hurls out straight techno, dance pop, soul, and funk with postmodern poise. Along with the work of other waxmen such as DJ Dan, Todd Terry, and Carl Cox (especially on Mixed Live), this record--which brilliantly showcases Vission's manic, house-y vibe--brings the genre one step closer to falling off the precipice of worldwide domination. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars I found it!.......2007-05-12

This is my 2nd copy. A friend let me borrow my first copy, and I never gave it back (that was the 1st time I had ever done that). But since, it had gotten too scratched up and worn. Anyway, this CD gets down. The beats are high octane. What I love about it is that there are alot of anthems....this music takes me back to a happy place. Perfect workout music OR old skool house backyard party. 7 years later and it still gives me the chills.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Richard Vission Album Of All Time.......2007-02-17

This album is one of the best DJ mixes ever. Buy it - you will love it.

2 out of 5 stars 54 great tracks on 1 CD mix = GARBAGE .......2006-10-24

That is correct, 30 second snippets on 1 CD means that you end up with a disc that sucks. Don't get me wrong, Richard Vission is a great DJ, but this is a disaster. Don't get me wrong, each song on that disc is totally sweet, but you will hear it only for a couple of seconds and then its gone. His other two albums are amazing
1) Damn that DJ made my Day
2) Automatic

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Mix.......2005-05-13

For the longest time I have hated house music. Ever since I started listening to electronic music I have listened to nothing but trance, trance, and more trance. Lately trance hasn't been doing it for me though, so I decided to broaden my horizons. I just got shut the f*ck up and dance today and let me say thank God I decided to buy it. I haven't heard a mix this wicked in years. RHV is an ill mother f*cker. There is not a trance dj that can touch him. So what if everything on this record is mixed on a computer. If you knew anything about electronic music you would know that thats the way everyone does it in the studio. When you go into the studio you do what you need to do to make the record sound good and wory about live stuff later. We all know what humpty is capable of live anyway. All that matters in the end is the finished product. If you are thinking about buying this record, I highly recomend it.

1 out of 5 stars shut the f- up and actually mix.......2004-07-19

This CD is great if you're a cracked-out raver who doesn't have the attention span to make it through a mix CD with actual substance. While RHV can definitely hold a mix down live, this CD is completely lacking in any character or demonstration of skill. News flash to everyone who enjoys the 'super fast mixing': this CD was constructed almost entirely in the studio. If you're going to cheat and rapidly layer tracks on top of each other this quickly, at least show some skill and pitch-adjust the vocals to match the track you've bastardized into a 15-second blurb before cutting the final copy. Try listening to real techno DJs who actually mix this fast on three turntables instead of doing all the 'mixing' on a computer in the studio.
