This collection of Baroque music consists of works by a composer that Segovia ceaselessly promoted throughout his career: J.S. Bach. As his compatriot Pablo Casals's performances of the Bach cello suites added so much to the great composer's reputation, Segovia's performances of Bach's lute suites and other works greatly enhanced the public's perception of the Leipzig master as the most "universal" of composers. His playing imbues Bach's music with a very special warmth and humanity. This disc is one of the most important and rewarding in the Segovia discography. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
I can't get enough of this CD.......2002-02-23
Andres Segovia, for my money, is the finest virtuoso guitarist who ever lived. Jimi Hendrix comes in at a close second because of his craftsmanship and highly innovative style. But there was something about Segovia that separated him from everyone else, regardless of genre.
The last review (from Mickey) reminded me there are more important elements to a musician than his or her technical skills. The "warmth and spirituality," as astutely noted by Mickey, are the seminal elements that make Segovia's playing so special. He brought Bach's compositions to life, and his interpretation of them here is compelling.
My music collection graces almost the entire gamut of music genres, from opera and classical guitar to hardcore and death metal. I'm proud to have Segovia's music in my collection. This is mandatory listening for anyone who cherishes quality music, especially those who are partial towards virtuoso guitar. I love it!
Segovia Is THE Master.......2001-07-12
Perhaps some of today's best classical guitarists have surpassed Segovia's pure technical ability, but the warmth and spirituality that Segovia brings to his playing will forever remain unsurpassed. In this particular CD, Segovia(he was very much a Bach specialist) brings not only life but an almost spiritual warmth to these Bach pieces, originally for lute, cello, and violin. Segovia shows why he is the greatest of all classical guitarists, one of the greatest musicians of the century and one of the few truly great interpreters of Bach(along with fellow spaniard and cellist Pablo Casals, pianists Glenn Gould and Rosalyn Tureck, and violinist Rachel Podger). Get this if you love guitar, get this if you love music, and get this if you love Bach. This album truly has some of the greatest interpretations of Bach pieces on record.
Bravo!.......2001-05-07
Segovia's a genius! Being a violinist, I haven't been moved by any guitar renditions of violin works. Segovia's recording is an exception. His interpretation of the Bach Chaconne is as captivating as any violin recordings. It's masterful.
The Soul of Bach.......2001-03-15
Anyone who was enchanted by Yo Yo Ma's recent video compilation of Bach's cello suites and who has an ear for guitar will also find something special here. Segovia brings a reverence and timelesness to these works, all of them ineffable masterpieces. While recording techniques and outright virtuosity have continued to develop since these recordings (Williams in the Lute Suites, Bream/Barrueco in the Chaconne, Sollscher/Galbraith and others in the Cello Suites) the sense of discovery and sheer love of beauty shine through as strongly as ever. These recordings will be around for a long time to come, but jump right in and be enchanted by as accurate and unwavering an account of these works as you ever thought possible.
That's it.......2000-08-12
Segovia loves guitar. He DOES loves it. All this can be heard in this cd, the whole Bach work, half of them adapted for guitar by segovia himself. And you will find that only a true artist can play and sing like this, confident, self-contained, even smiling in his own world . There is needless to judge such a performance. This is true excellent music.

Customer Reviews:
an army that will never fall.......2005-01-14
New Model Army has often been compared to the likes of WAR-era U2, The Alarm, and countless obscure UK Punk bands who lean towards political and religious subjects, yet they are in a class by themselves by securing the dubious honor of being one of the few Punk bands to actively incorporate the use of a violin or an acoustic guitar into their sound. if there was ever a band who had such a burning desire in their hearts and minds for anything whatsoever, it is New Model Army. and this album certainly lives up to its title. on 1984's 'The Price', Justin Sullivan's introspective and breathy vocals ignite a passionate fire as he channels the vocal stylings of Sting back in the days when he was fighting for New Wave justice with The Police. on 1987's 'White Coats,' Sullivan and Co. question the existence of life, the tragedy of suicide, and what lies ahead of us in the great beyond. the two most recognized tracks on this disc are both from NMA's standout year of 1989: 'Vagabonds' and 'Green And Grey'. 'Vagabonds' is a true battle cry for anyone who has ever felt lost or alienated as Sullivan chants "we are in this together" in the song's chorus, set to a military-style drum beat, a strong guitar, and a piercing violin strain a la 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.' 'Green And Grey' is a haunting acoustic lament to a deceased friend. if you have ever lost someone you love, this song will surely make you feel their presence. it has also been said that Justin Sullivan's voice is "too pristine" to be fronting a Punk band. but like the music he sings, he is fighting for a noble cause, which in this case would be the fact that Punk doesn't always have to sound chaotic to be considered aggressive. and Sullivan's stunning rasp certainly proves that point.
although New Model Army never reached the enormous amount of popularity that the aforementioned U2 achieved, they remain one of the most driven bands of the 1980's and beyond. no matter what struggles they face, this is one army that will never fall.
As good as a band can possibly be.......2004-05-18
This career-spanning retrospective of NMA is nothing more than a document of the only rock band that really matters anymore. R.E.M. have wandered off somewhere, U2 has become too inconsistent, and Bob Mould seems to have retired. NMA keeps soldiering on, however, and even with a five-year hiatus in the mid-1990s, they still bring that fire and passion that they always did. Every song is delivered as if it is the most important news you'll ever hear, and NMA continue to buck against all trends. While they may never have a massive commercial success here in the US, one listen should convince anyone that there is no one who deserves it more.
This CD suffers from one flaw: it should have been two. There are a few singles missing ("Queen of My Heart", most obviously, as well as the live version of "Space" from 1991's Raw Melody Men), but it gets five stars anyway because the material on it is so crucial and arresting and flat-out fantastic that it could hardly receive anything less. Of particular note is the US-only remix of 1986's "Poison Street", a must for collectors as its album The Ghost Of Cain is widely regarded as one of their best. Three tracks come from 1988's Thunder And Consolation, although in all honesty any three songs from that masterpiece would fit perfectly here. Understand that this is a band whose 1994 b-side compilation sounds better and more complete than almost any other artist's studio release.
NMA have always been overlooked in the US, although as of this writing they are touring here for the first time in at least 10 years, playing clubs around the nation. Any fan of English punk, post-punk, rock, balladry and lyrics that actually say something should absolutely not miss this. Those of you who do not know NMA could very easily start here and hear what happens when you don't sell out.

The Segovia heard in these recordings, made between 1927 and 1939, is quite different from the somewhat enfeebled legend who toured and recorded through his 80s. The flashing virtuosity and color of the best of these 78s compares better with the virtuosic standards of the '90s. Just hearing Tárrega's familiar Recuerdos de la Alhambra in this 1927 recording is enough to convince you that you're listening to one of the great guitar virtuosos of all time. It's unclear why Segovia's often-sentimentalized Bach became so famous, and the transcriptions that lead off this disc are quite unstylish by our contemporary standards. But once you get past those and the following Baroque items, which take up only a few minutes, you're into the romantic and 20th-century repertoire that Segovia played so brilliantly. The amazing transfers make the recordings sound much more recent than they actually are. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Editorial review.......2007-02-23
I don't agree with Leslie Gerber's editorial review of this disc, Segovia's playing of Bach is beautiful and he infuses this music which is so easy to play in a sterile fashion with great attention to the melodic line, contrapuntal texture and form, skills which are often sadly lacking in todays performances of Bach. Leslie Gerber blindly follows the politically correct mood of the day which is to deny that there is any romance in this music, truly great performers don't just play the dots they bring something special of their own to the music, a point completely missed by Leslie Gerber and other critics and commentators of her kind.

Great Track Selection but Not So Great Sound!.......2006-05-21
This is a good sampling of the great master's earlier works and I suppose given the age of the recordings, it's inevitable that the sound quality would suffer. It doesn't help when this album is recorded in Mono from an ADD master source as well. What this means is that the sound quality is very poor indeed. Given the state-of-the-art sound engineering technology that is out there these days, I hope EMI decides to revisit the vaults and dig up the best preserved master tapes and remaster these in stereo and clean up as much of the sound as is possible for re-release. That would be the only way to do justice to the memory of this all-time guitar great. They've already done this with Django Reinhardt's early work and so it's about time they got around to updating and remastering the Segovia catalog. I, for one, will be waiting for the day with great anticipation...
ALL SEGOVIA IS GREAT.......2005-07-12
Gotta have that slow spanish guitar when things get hectic. Spanish guitar by Segovia (not the more frenetic flamingoists which is another mood) and other slow subtle spanish greats fits a special mood. I usually mix it with nature music, oud, sitar, and Anouar Brahem (all).
Nice but Noisy.......2004-01-21
As a casual fan I was surprised by the noise
on the track. You might choose to hear
the noise as a pleasing retro background. This
CD is probably great for Segovia experts, but
if you're looking for nice background music
just be aware it will sound like the old vinyl
it was remastered from.
Exceptional guitar work.......2002-10-17
Segovia makes his brilliance shine on this compilation. You can't deny the musicianship in these early recordings that, if you are familiar with any of his later sessions, were never left behind. Buy it, you'll love it. I'm sure you'll be scouring for more Segovia to grace you cd player.

Paul Jacobs, who died of AIDS in 1983, was a pianist of wide interests and prodigious abilities. He never made much of a solo career, but he became widely known for his contemporary music performances and his work with the New York Philharmonic. Fortunately, he was enlisted to make a series of recordings for the Nonesuch LP label. Unfortunately, Nonesuch has ignored most of them during the CD era. This collection, three complete LPs on two CDs, focuses on the music and transcriptions of Ferruccio Busoni, which is an acquired taste. Busoni had a fascinating mind, but you have to enjoy slithery chromatic harmonies to like most of his music--an exception is the wonderful Sonatina, based on themes from Bizet's Carmen. Jacobs had the sensibility and the technique to do justice to this difficult music. But many listeners may be even more impressed with his playing of etudes by Stravinsky, Bartók, and Messiaen, which is thoroughly brilliant and very exciting. Reviving these recordings must have been a real labor of love for the Arbiter label, but the artistic results certainly justify the efforts, and even the 1970s recorded sound holds up well. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Pianism and musicianship for the ages.......2007-03-12
The Busoni sets are probably what most people will be looking for on these discs, and they are wonderful examples of the articulate, lucid, imaginative, and colorful playing of the great Paul Jacobs. But the Etudes recordings for Nonesuch were on the leading edge of the piano frontier during the 1970's, and have never been surpassed. The frighteningly difficult Bartok Etudes as recorded here are on a level that has never even been approached, anytime, anyplace! This is really a 'legendary' performance.
Unique artistry.......2006-11-07
Paul Jacobs was a pioneering artist during a period in which young upstart labels such as Nonesuch were challenging the rather homogenized classical piano market (Serkin, Horowitz, Rubenstein). For a comparison, try listening to his rendition of Bach-Busoni's "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland" in comparison with Horowitz's recording of the same piece. While the latter plays perfectly well, Jacobs restrained tempo works to convey brilliantly the tenseness and expectancy that the music seeks to convey. A stroke of genius! Jacobs recordings of Debussy's etudes are also pure magic.
Paul Jacobs. In memoriam!.......2006-08-14
This was perhaps the best achievement in the life of this singular pianist. Paul Jacobs died early, but these rewarding recordings conveyed many people (as well as John Ogdon) to put more attention the prestige and stature of Ferrucio Busoni.
Certainly, I don' t know about any other pianists so committed with these Sonatinas, that deserved him so many praised comments in the eighties through that well known label: Nonesuch.
If you really love Busoni 's craft, then go for this emblematic album.
Sometimes wishes do become true..........2001-02-18
I've had the black-vinyl recordings from Nonesuch since, at least, my college days, and I'd included these performances on my CD-purchase wish-list ever since I started collecting silver, expecting realistically to find only a bit of this repertory. I was astonished to find this 2-disk collection of *all* of Jacobs' Busoni sonatinas, plus the etudes by Bartok, Messiaen, Stravinsky, *and* the Bach-Busoni and Brahms-Busoni chorale preludes. These last two groups are worth the price of the set by themselves. As I recall, the sound of the Brahms-Busoni was, on the old Nonesuch LP, pretty dark and colorless... That's been somehow wonderfully rectified on this CD reissue. Jacobs' playing of the chorale preludes is magical, probably the best recorded to-date (I've heard rumors of a recital of the Bach-Busoni by John Ogdon on Altarus, but that's apparently never been released). The Busoni sonatinas are authoritative, and Jacobs reaches the depths of this sometimes-simple, sometimes-perplexing music to reveal it fully. The groups of etudes, some of the most difficult 20th-Century piano writing, and certainly some of the most explorative, are performed nearly perfectly. If you have any curiosity about XX-Cent piano literature, buy this disk-set! Essential for pianophiles and lovers of Bach, Busoni, Brahms, Bartok, et al.
Superb, insightful playing.......2000-10-24
It's good to know that these fine recordings, long worn out in my LP versions, are finally available on CD. Congratulations to the Arbiter label for making them available to a new generation of music lovers. Jacobs' playing is accomplished on all levels--his incredible velocity, his smoothness, and his gorgeous touch are evident throughout. But the emotional intensity, particularly in the Bach-Busoni and Brahms-Busoni, is what carries these recordings into a very different realm. Busoni's mysticism is too rarefied for many performers, but Jacobs thrives in this atmosphere. Both Bach and Brahms emerge from these recordings in a different light, filtered through Busoni's genius and Jacobs' deep comprehension. They sound intensely modern, daring, and--most wonderful--completely fresh. Jacobs' recordings of Bartok, Messiaen, and Stravinsky are also revelations. The sound transfer is marvelous--all of Jacobs' crispness and warmth is there, with an element of thrill that was missing on the LPs. Buy this recording!

Album Description
A sparkling collection of timeless jazz and pop standards. Includes songs penned by such legendary songwriters as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and others. Also includes several classic "naughty but nice" double entendre songs made popular by Julia Lee in the 1940's, like "I Didn't Like It The First Time (The Spinach Song)."

Debbie we will miss you.......2004-03-04
Debbie Campbell, a wonderful and gifted singer and musician, a gentle soul whose heart reached out to many during her time on planet Earth, passed away Febuary 28, 2004. She will be missed by all of us who were her friends. Her voice was that of an angel, and I am sure that Heaven is proud to have her joining in! This CD is a wonderful addition to any CD collection. Debbie, you will be missed.
A Classic.......2004-02-05
This is an extradordinary collection of familiar favorites that Debbie Campbell performs with such skill and grace that they become classics all over again. Her voice is exceptional and she maximizes its effect with the heart and soul she brings to the lyrics. Each song is memorable, but "The Days of Wine and Roses" is a particular standout, as Campbell seamlessly sings in concert with wonderful backup musicians.
Soulful & swingin' - Debbie makes these standards her own!.......2004-01-16
What amazes me about this marvelous gem of a CD is why some major label hasn't come along and snapped it up. I would have been enthralled simply with Ms. Campbell's captivating renditions of so many of my favorite songs on this album, but she and producer Pat Savage (who apparently is also a MIGHTY sweet guitar player, besides having the exquisite ears and velvet touch of a truly outstanding producer) have put together a collection of material and musicians that rival ANYTHING I've heard on a major label in a long, long time.
I'd have been a happy buyer if only for the way that Ms. Campbell captured the heart-grabbing essence of several eternal classics, such as "As Time Goes By," "Our Love is Here To Stay," "More Than You Know," and Hoagy Carmichael's endearing "The Nearness of You." I'd even have been satisfied if I had only been able to listen to Debbie's blues-tinged, but sophisticatedly sassy interpretations of the up-tempo and Big Band swing numbers such as "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," Duke Ellington's classic "I'm Beginning to See The Light" and the rollicking title song by Shelton Brooks, "Some of These Days". But on top of all that, Ms. Campbell has also captured several, obscure but priceless (read that, "almost naughty") novelty songs such as Julia Lee's "I Didn't Like It The First Time"(The Spinach Song) and "If I Can't Sell It (I'll Keep Sittin' On It Before I Give It Away" - The Chair Song) with the currency of a prime-time CNN news break.
Much of what makes this album such a priceless gem is the fact that Debbie and producer Savage have pulled together a truly amazing group of musicians who give their support to the project in the seemingly effortless way that only truly masterful, veteran musicians can achieve. Listen for example to the incredibly seamless solo transitions between the Savage's guitar work and the exquisite sax phrasing of Will Campbell (who toured for several years with Harry Connick Jr's band) on "Days of Wine and Roses." I tell you, it just doesn't get much better than that!
Like I said at the beginning, why oh why, dear major labels, can't you put out this sort of product? And why haven't you snapped up the incredible talent of Debbie Campbell? I can only hope that we'll be hearing more (MUCH more!) from her somewhere soon.
All the right songs. . ........2003-06-04
I bought this album because I love all the songs on it and it is hard to find them all on one album. Alas, I should have listened to it before ordering. Debbie Campbell's interpretations of these songs is just plain terrible. It's not that she alters them with a jazz interpretation, she just plain changes them, warbling all over the place. Often she rewrites the melody completely, without any understanding of what the song is about. I was hoping for an updated version of songs like 'Some of These Days', a song about a woman pumping herself up and strutting her stuff, but Debbie Campbell is no Sophie Tucker.
You Made Me Love You.......2002-05-11
I have listened to this CD at least 15 times since I first purchased it. I have yet to tire of it. Debbie's voice is incredible and the song selection is great. She puts emotion into the songs that can be heard -- and felt. I can't wait for the next one!

Really Great Blues.......2006-04-29
I guess evryone has a different idea of what good blues are. I am 70 years old & have been listening to, & enjoying blues since I was 14 when a friend from louisiana introduced me to blues with Brownie McGhee singing "Diamond Ring". I am one of those people who think that white people cannot play, or sing blues. It seems as though most try to sound like the Rolling Stones or such. I buy a lot of blues music by people I have never heard of & am almost always disappointed. I bought this CD last week after hearing 3 30 second snippets of it and am not disappointed, this guy is great. I love this CD
Deep, sexy blues.......2005-06-16
There was a time when the blues had a sexy rhythm that made the girls go crazy. I thought those days were long past until I heard Paul Oscher's "Alone With The Blues". Watch out ladies! This man's got the feeling!
This is what blues should sound like!!!.......2004-09-01
Upon the recommendation of a member of my Yahoo Blues Group went to Paul's site and ordered this CD "Alone With The Blues". I was totally blown away by the harmonica playing on this. You can actually hear and even feel the blues resonating from every note played. The CD is just what the title and the cover indicated; him playing alone by himself. Many artists today; even blues artists think they need a 10 piece group to sound good. Paul proves that you definitely do not. DO NOT MISS THIS CD!!

Majestic Harmonica.......2004-07-02
I first saw Paul Oscher play harmonica with Muddy Waters at the Gaslite cafe in New York's Greenwich Village, back in 1971. I remember the crowd going wild after every solo. He had a tone so deep, we went back two nights in a row.
Last night, I was reading Living Blues magazine and there it was - an ad for "Alone With The Blues" by Paul Oscher on Electro-Fi. I quickly ordered the cd ... and what a joy it is.
Opening up with "Walkin'", a mid-tempo instrumental, the chromatic harmonica sounds like a complete horn section. The vocals have a beautiful, down home feel. You don't get the overblowing of notes and histrionic vocals of many of his contemporaries. Oscher leaves space, going for the "less is more" approach. Dig the lonesome sound of "Standing At The Crossroads".
At times, "Alone With The Blues" sounds as if he's backed by a full band. But it's only Mr. Oscher, alone, with echoes of Big Walter, Cotton - intertwined with Oscher's own original style. Pay attention to the standout slide-and-vocal on "Blues and Trouble" that is just riveting.
Paul Oscher is a multi-instrumentalist who brings a gut-bucket-in-the-alley sound to every song on this CD. Harp players will find so many different positions utilizied by Oscher - and won't be disappointed.
So get this CD, turn down the lights, and dig: because this is THE REAL DEAL.
Paul Oscher "alone with the blues".......2004-07-01
This is a fine cd from former Muddy Waters band member. It covers a wide range of blues styles and showcases Oscher as blues singer, songwriter and multi- instrumentalist on the harmonica ,guitar, piano and melodica, Oscher plays the melodica through a leslie speaker and it sounds like a hammond organ. The whole cd is deep, deep blues of the kind that you dont hear enough of theses days. Oscher learned his lessons well. One of the best real blues cds I've heard in a long time.

Amazon.com essential recording
This disc features two guitar concerts that were composed expressly for Segovia--Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre and Manual Ponce's Concierto del Sur. Both works have been recorded many times by virtually every major guitarist, but there is something uniquely satisfying in hearing them played by the man who started the "classical guitar craze" of modern times. The Fantasia in particular, with its modern take on Baroque tunes, suits Segovia's stylish and elegant playing perfectly. A slice of history, then, and a satisfying music experience in its own right. --David Hurwitz

The best guitarist ever in one of his top !.......2004-11-03
Is there any other Fantasia para un gentilhombre more exuberant and idiomatic than this one?
Segovia made a sublime performance under the conduction of enriquie Jorda and the Symphony of the Air . Elegance , nuance and rapture are some of the multiple reasons you have to acquire this gem
The Ponce Concerto del Sur is extraordinary well played too .
The other superlative recording is the Castles of Spain of Federico Moreno Tórroba . You will find in this piece a set of vignettes a real cornucopia of different spanish flavour pices each one with it particular feature .
A real treasure file !
Bad sonic quality too much to ignore.......2004-06-18
There is some very good music here, from the Rodrigo fantasy based on the music of Gaspar Sanz to Ponce's poetic Concierto del Sur (Concerto of the south). However, the sound quality and execution by Segivia isn't up to standard as in other recodings. At times it seems Segovia's guitar was miked very close to sound extra "boomy" in the bass notes, really obscuring the sound. Some chords seemed to thump along unmusically and I never got the real sense of the melody lines because they were not let to sing to thier fullest.
The same problem continued in the Torroba solo pieces "Castles of Spain". The phrasing to my ears sounded choppy and haphazard, with an unusual tendency to "click" the treble strings in the melody. I first assumed this was due to Segovia's advanced age at the time of the recording. The latest recording here (Castles of Spain) was recorded in 1969. Of course by 1969, recording technology had well advanced far beyond the standards of the 1930's (in fact, the quality of sound reproduction sounded very crisp and clear), but unfortunately Segovia's abilities by 1969 were not as they were in the 30's and 40's and the cleaner recording unfortunately highlighted this fact.
I do recommend this recording for historical value and analysis, especially for Concierto del Sur by Ponce. But I do not recommend this CD for pure listening pleasure. Both guitar concertos have been recorded many times by other players, and for the charming "Castles of Spain" I recommend Christopher Parkening's exquisite versions on "Tribute to Segovia" CD.
Sally from Westchester, New York.......2000-08-01
This is the first time I have reveiwed anything and I am not at all an expert--but this is especially beautiful ( although the Cd The Legendary Segovia which I got at the same time as this one has grown on me--this did not HAVE TO "grow on" me--These two are only my second and third (respectively) Segovia recordings ever-but there will be more --especially from this series-- I highly recommend this one in particular.
