Victor executive Ralph Peer found success in the 1920s seeking out remote old-time musicians, but even Peer could not fathom the impact that Jimmie Rodgers would have on 20th-century American music. Two cuts from August of 1927 introduced the world to Rodgers's fusion of hillbilly music and blues, but "Blue Yodel," recorded less than four months later, elevated Rodgers to legendary status. "Blue Yodel," backed with the playful "Away Out on the Mountain," sold a million copies at a time when 10,000 was considered a roaring success. When Rodgers returned to the studio in February of 1928, seemingly everything he cut was destined for greatness. The jubilant "Dear Old Sunny South by the Sea," the plaintive "Treasures Untold," and the gambler's tale "In the Jailhouse Now" are all defining moments in country music history. --Marc Greilsamer

The Detroit-born Kenny Burrell reigns as the dean of jazz guitarists. He's combined Charlie Christian's prebop fluency, Django Reinhardt's Old World touches, and the rhythmic drive of Nat King Cole's guitarist, Oscar Moore. This two-CD set contains Burrell's earliest Blue Note sessions from 1956. The first seven tracks, with drummer Kenny Clarke, bassist Paul Chambers, pianist Tommy Flanagan, and percussionist Candido Camero were released as Introducing Kenny Burrell. It's a pleasing and swinging potpourri of Latin-tinged numbers and ballads such as "Weaver of Dreams," "This Time the Dream's on Me," and "Takeela" (read: Tequila). Burrell's nifty "Fugue 'n the Blues" is a Bach-meets-bop excursion worthy of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Tracks 8 and 9 are from Kenny Burrell Volume Two, and feature the guitarist's lightning-licked take on "Get Happy" and a succulent solo rendition of George Gershwin's "But Not for Me."
Those sessions continue on Disc 2 with Shadow Wilson and Oscar Pettiford taking over the drum and the bass with Frank Foster on tenor saxophone, and they remake classics such as Count Basie's "Moten Swing." Another date, Swingin', with Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Doug Watkins, and Louis Hayes, finds Burrell and company in superb form on Lester Young's "D.B. Blues" and Silver's "Nica's Dream." On all of those sides, Burrell's blues-based guitar sounds as modern today as it did in the '50s. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Essential Jazz Guitar!.......2000-06-30
On the song, "Now see how you are" the slow tempo and emotional impact is quite spendid. I can even play along on my own guitar on the main theme. In fact if you play guitar at all, this recording is a great one to learn and play along with. If you can only get one Burrell CD, this is the one to buy! This CD should have wide appeal to any interested in the jazz scene in the mid-50's.
Other Burrell CD's to get are: Blue Lights, 5 Spot
and Midnight Blue.

Like most "long-lost" chapters of many established recording artists' careers, this collection of (mostly) mid-'60s demos, outtakes, and singles bears little resemblance to the Warren Zevon most are familiar with. Echoing the folk-rock boom that had just taken root on the West Coast, most of the tracks here were cut in service of a duet Zevon formed while still a teenager at L.A.'s Fairfax High, Lyme & Cybelle (Zevon is Lyme; Cybelle one Violet Santangelo, later to become Broadway star Laura Kenyon). Their buoyant folk-pop is showcased on the Top 100 single "Follow Me" as well as a bedroom demo of the Beatles' "I've Just Seen a Face," a more Zevon-esque take of Jimmy Reed's "Peeping and Hiding" and a cover/withdrawn single Bob Dylan's "If You Gotta Go, Go Now." Zevon's tenure in L&C ended shortly after t! he latter track's demise (the "Lyme" on the two bonus cuts here is session musician Wayne Erwin), but he continued to work with producer Bones Howe, yielding the four solo demos also included here. The flitting, folkie-tenor Zevon uses on "Outside Chance" (which became a single for the Howe-produced Turtles) and "And If I Had You" give way to the familiar weary voice and dark concerns of his solo piano demo for "Bullet for Ramona," later recut for Wanted Dead or Alive. It's a jarring moment of revelation, one that hints at the deep-seated torment and unease that's always informed the best of Zevon's songs. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Early studio recordings by Warren Zevon includes two extremely rare bonus tracks by Lyme and Cybelle, which feature Warren's replacement vocalist/guitarist Wayne Erwin - 'Song 7' & 'Write If You Get Work'. Varese. 2003.Customer Reviews:
His best? No, but certainly important........2005-11-01
Realize this- most (if not all) of this was recorded before Zevon was 22. How great can he be expected to be? He's good, if I want to hear his greatness, I'll put on "Life'll Kill Ya", "Transverse City" or "Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School" (or any album for that matter released between 1976 and 2003).
I'm not sure about the importance of the last two Zevon-free numbers, as I'm sure nobody who buys this buys it for Violet Santangelo, even if she harmonizes beautifully with Warren. But the twelve tracks with the Excitable Boy are essential for tracing his history.
He Just Wasn't Ready.......2004-01-08
For collectors and historians only.
Everybody has a skeleton in their closet...........2003-05-29
Unlike Wanted: Dead or Alive, First Sessions offers little that suggests Zevon's best and greatest material was yet to come. There are a couple of songs that might not have sounded out of place on his first or second albums (Outside Chance--a hit for The Turtles; A Bullet For Ramona actually did reappear on W:DOA;Ride So High which was never released in any form). That's not to suggest this is a bad compilation--it's probably something Zevon never thought would see the light of day during the 70's (and it did).
Now that Warren is terminally ill, Varese Sarabande has chosen to re-release these early sides recorded as part of the duo lyme & cybelle and as early songwriting demos. The remastering by Dan Hersh improves the sound over earlier editions but doesn't improve the quality of the songs. The early material co-written by Zevon and Violet Santagelo)it typical of the mid-60's folk-rock movement. They're derivative but, overall, nothing to get too excited about.
The later material recorded when Zevon was shopping for a deal as a solo performer (and as songwriting demos to sell to other artist's) show some of the promise Zevon exhibited later in his career. Again, they're not bad but none of them reflect the experience, sharp wit or poetic sensibility at the heart of Warren's later material. I'd recommend them for hardcore Zevon fans who must have everything the man recorded. Otherwise, steer clear and purchase any of his fine albums from Warren Zevon up to and including the terrific My Ride's Here.
The bonus tracks are, again, for completist. Warren doesn't appear on them nor did he write the last single recorded by Wayne Erwin and Violet as lyme and cybelle. They have little in common with the previous singles sounding like out takes from an Association recording (not surprising given the producer involved).
Warren Zevon, Sixties Style.......2003-03-30
(1) "Follow Me" - Peaking at #65 in 1966, this Lyme & Cybelle song is a psychedelic flavored classic. It boasts a great opening riff, a catchy melody, superb musical production, and a perfect blending of Warren's and Violet's voices. This song has an insistent drumbeat and a blistering electric guitar break that are the very definition of a folk-rock song. GREAT!
(2) "Like The Seasons" - It's a mellow folk song, backed with strings. At times the melody strains to accompany the heartfelt lyrics. "You and I have learned that love can turn like the seasons." Who says Warren Zevon can't write tender love songs?
(3) "I've Just Seen A Face" - It's a homemade recording with surprisingly good sound quality. Lyme & Cybelle's version of the Beatles' classic features their vocal harmonies and Warren's acoustic guitar playing to great effect.
(4) "Peeping And Hiding" - This Jimmy Reed blues song, better known as "Baby, What You Want Me To Do," was performed by Elvis in his 1968 Comeback Special. Lyme & Cybelle's rocking version of this tune features bluesy piano and harmonica backing. Warren's love of blues music is evidenced by the songs he did many years later on the Hindu Love Gods album.
(5) "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" - The prominent horns and organ turn this Bob Dylan song into a pop tune. It's enjoyable to listen to, but not among the best of the many Dylan cover songs done in the sixties.
(6) "I'll Go On" - It's a very mellow folk song, pleasant but unremarkable.
(7) "Follow Me" - A homemade demo, it proves that this tune works well as an acoustic folk song.
(8) "(You Used To) Ride So High" - After leaving Lyme & Cybelle, Warren recorded this demo under the fictitious group name of The Motorcycle Abeline. It's a hard rocking song with a memorable melody.
(9) "Outside Chance" - Another rocker, this song is most famous for being covered by Warren's White Whale labelmates, the Turtles.
(10) "I See The Lights" - It's a folk song lamenting a lost love. Warren's voice strains a bit on the last high note.
(11) "And If I Had You" - It sounds like a wandering troubadour trying to win the hand of his lady fair with this plea for love. This is about as far from "Werewolves Of London" as you can get!
(12) "A Bullet For Ramona" - This demo, featuring Warren at the piano, is the only song in which you can recognize Warren's familiar, deep voice. Unfortunately, it's also the only demo with poor sound quality. Warren would later record this song for his "Wanted Dead Or Alive" album.
(13) "Song 7" - This was released by Lyme & Cybelle after Warren Zevon had left the group. This overproduced pop song sounds like it was taken from an episode of the Partridge Family TV show.
(14) "Write If You Get Work" - It's a novelty song that would have sounded right at home on the "Winchester Cathedral" album by the New Vaudeville Band.
Clocking in at 33 minutes and 33 seconds, I can highly recommend this collection to diehard Warren Zevon fans, like myself. Casual fans may want to think twice before buying this CD.

14)Write If You Get Work - Lyme and Cybelle (Wayne Erwin vocals)
At the time of this review, the songs weren't listed, and I included them in my review because it may be the deciding factor on your decision to buy. As far as content, this is the best early work I've heard by an artist since Meet the Beatles. Better, in fact, because it's Warren Zevon. Zevon's voice throughout most of the tracks is lighter, higher in tone, and it gives the music a different feel. Some of the lyrics are sunnier than those of the later Zevon we know and love. They are good, still, and the cynical and harder edged tones start to creep into the solo works towards the end of the album. The underlying sadness that makes many of his songs shine is here. The instrumentation is already highly developed, and the lyric quality (for the kind of songs Zevon writes) can only be built upon with age. A Bullet For Ramona (later included in the Wanted Dead or Alive album) is the turning point, where his pitch dropped and became the deeper, throatier voice he uses now. It is interesting to see the transition here.
This isn't a collection of throwaways like so many other unreleased sessions by other artists, but a portrait of an artist trying to find his true voice. This is as worthy of repeat listenings as any other Zevon album. There is mention in the liner notes of an unreleased followup to Wanted Dead or Alive. Hopefully, if The First Sessions is a success, we may be treated to that one as well.

Album Description
"The Hallmark Sessions", recorded at Hallmark Studios in Toronto, Canada on November 28, 1961, were recorded when Lenny Breau was only twenty years old. This is Lenny's first professionally recorded Jazz session and, until now, has never been released. The original analog reel-to-reel master tapes have been in the possession of Lenny's former manager, George B. Sukornyk, for over forty years. In addition to several Jazz standards such as: It Could Happen To You and I'll Remember April, Lenny also performs several solo Flamenco and Country & Western pieces, as well as four previously unheard original compositions. Lenny recorded seven tracks with acoustic bassist Rick Danko and drummer Levon Helm, both former members of the group The Band, as well as six solo guitar pieces at Hallmark Studios. In addition to the trio and solo tracks, there are also six bonus tracks that contain the Stereo versions of the trio pieces. All tracks have been professionally mastered using 24-bit digital technology.Customer Reviews:

Technique to Burn and Even Some Taste From a 20-Something!.......2004-04-13
Absolutely fantastic use of his great prodigal prowess on guitar. It is hard to believe he had only been listening to jazz for a relatively short time, and beginning to practice and learning to play it for even less time. He sounds so fully developed, with of many of the licks and techniques down that dozens of world class oldtime jazz guitar players made entire careers out of.
I hear Barney Kessel in many of the up tempo single note cascades. I hear some Joe Pass in the trio stuff, when he's mixing the chordal passages with single note cadenza-like outbursts of sheer enthusiastic shredding. My only criticism is he is hung up on using one too many pull-offs (from pinky down to index with left hand on a single string)in one too many places.
Overall, another exhilarating, exciting, rewarding addition to the best of the best of chordal jazz guitar collections possible, by a young master high up on his game, with unimaginable peaks and valleys to come.

Worth the Price of Admission For Avid Fans.......2005-02-21
The arrangments of the songs here that went on to make "Come Away With Me"'s final cut, while not as sharp as what they would splendidly evolve to be, are certainly worthy of any ears who've come to appreciate Jones' music to a higher degree than the majority of her CD buyers. The only such track that does not follow that is "Turn Me On," which is near-indistinguisable from the "Come Away With Me" version.
Like "Turn Me On," Jones' vocals on "Don't Know Why" are the same as they are on the version included on the mega-hit debut album, with an obviously differed arrangement. The bass and piano are distinctively less poignant and on-the-money than they would eventually become, but still shine brightly.
"Come Away With Me" and "Lonestar," meanwhile, could very well have been included as 'Softer Version' alternative takes on CD singles or side projects. Indeed, these predecessors sound much more languid and laid-back than their 2002 counterparts would end up being, much to the chagrin of detractors of Jones' mellow sound. For listeners with the keen sense to sit back and savor the subtle beauty of the sound of Jones and her band, however, these two particular recordings are essentials.
"Something Is Calling You," a splendid Jesse Harris-penned track that, while obviously out of place with the overall landscape of "Come Away With Me," matches the album's material in overall quality. The instrumentation, which begins with a consistent guitar solo that absolutely grabs hold of the heart with its profound beauty, along with cacophonous drum brushes, marries with Harris' stream-of-conscious lyrics and Jones' dreamy interpretation to produce an underrated gem in her catalog:
"What difference/Do you think that it makes/If you give/Or if its you who takes?/I know it/I feel it/You do too/Just listen/You'll hear it calling you."
The best kept secret, all things considered, of her catalog, however, is her cover of jazz legend Horace Silver's "Peace." Recorded solely with Jones introspective interpretation of Silver's lyrics, accompanied only by her passionate, flawless piano-playing, this is for certain the best track the legend-in-the-making has recorded thus far in her young career:
"When you find peace of mind/Leave your worries behind/Don't say that it can't be done/With a new point of view/Life's true meaning comes to you/And the freedom you seek is won/Peace is for everyone."
Overall, "First Sessions," while only existent among a limited pressing of 5,000 copies, is positively worth attaining if you are a bonafide appreciator of Jones and her music. One listen to this will make such fans wonder why the hype that surrounded her didn't come all the more soon than it did.

Ernest Tubb, elder statesman .......2006-05-06
GREAT... FOR COMPLETISTS.......2002-10-29
Yet, this is a remarkable collection, inasmuch as it includes Tubb's last sessions. Even though he was in his late sixties by the time he made these recordings, Tubb is still in great form, and the sound is very good. Moreover, he performs some more obscure songs apart from his hits, which makes the album even more interesting. Even though the CD features no sessionography (it offers no booklet, for that matter), Ernest is accompanied here by some of the best Nashville session musicians of the time (if anyone is wondering how I know that without any personnel info, then I will say that Tubb himself shouts out their names from time to time while they are performing an instrumental solo during a song). Melba Montgomery also joins him on a jumping version of the classic honky-tonk song "Sweet Thang."
So, this is a good pick for any serious country music fan, but it is indispensable for completists and Tubb aficionados.
