5 out of 5 stars Cart Butler stays true to the classic approach.......2007-04-10

Carl Butler had to hide the fact that he was an American Indian. But this did not stop his enthusiasitc approach to country and western music, stripped down to its basic sound and tempo. This may sound ponderous to the uninitiated, but several listenings to Carl's tracks will help them appreciate the subtlety in his voice and his heartfelt attraction to the melodies and lyrics of classic C and W.

It might be easier to appreciate Carl if fans of C and W would listen to the progression and leap of music such as Carl's from the earlier efforts of the Carter family. They took traditional music of the hills of Appalachia and translated it into their own versions, which added depth and musical notes and rhythm changes.

Carl then takes the next step to "traditional" C and W with his unvarnished but emotion-filled approach. I recommend any afficianado of county and western and its roots include Carl Butler in his/her collection. This disc is a very good choice that shows Carl at his best.

5 out of 5 stars The Founding Duet .......2006-07-12

When I walk around the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, I tend to notice who isn't in the Hall yet. Male-Female duets became a staple of Country Music in the late 1960s and 1970s--George & Tammy, Porter & Dolly, Conway & Loretta--but if you want to hear the duet style's roots, you start with Carl and Pearl Butler. This CD is not a collection of the original versions of these titles, but a compilation of remakes done during the 1970s. But these sides hold up pretty well and until the originals are packaged this nicely, this is a good place to start listening to the Butlers. For those who haven't heard the Butlers, their style is hard honky tonk style with nice tight harmonies. Lots of fiddle and steel guitar here, the way it should be. Carl was a fine honky tonk singer and deserves more than the footnote mentions he usually gets. Treat yourself and listen to Carl and Pearl, if your heart has ever been broken, you will know their genius. And you too will wonder why they aren't in the Hall yet.

3 out of 5 stars Not for this price.......2002-04-12

This is an alright album. Nothing major. Not even an album of big hits. Just an recording made in the early 1970's. The notes are good, but I wish this was a 26 song CD of their big songs. My advice: Save your money until a better CD is released.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......1999-04-28

    5 out of 5 stars Uncle Pen-ultimate.......2005-08-18

According to Joe Sixpack's online discography, this was the next-to-last album of Monroe's life, and no one can say his devotion to gospel faltered at the finish, because its Appalachian authenticity is exemplary, and "Gloryland," "Not My Home" and "Lost in Sin" are as galvanizing as anything he ever recorded. "Saint Peter's golden mandolin is reserved for Bill Monroe."

5 out of 5 stars Another great, late-career Bill Monroe gospel album.......2004-03-18

A fine bluegrass gospel release, with strong ensemble work from Clarence Tate, Tom Ewing and Blake Williams, who formed the core of the Blue Grass Boys at the time, as well as numerous guest stars and contributors, such as Ricky Skaggs, Ralph Stanley, Jim & Jesse and Mac Wiseman. The sound of the record is much softer than Monroe's typical "high lonesome" sound, and Bill himself seems somewhat subsumed by all the flurry of other musicians, but it's still a fine album, regardless. Mighty fine! Recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Good All-Star Cast.......2004-02-03

This album is neat because it features quite an excellent cast of musicians singing with Bill Monroe. Ralph Stanley does a beautiful and haunting job singing lead on "Harbor of Love." That cut is definitely the best on this album. Ricky Skaggs and the Osborne Brothers are also featured on this album to name a few. The selection of songs are wonderful, and the harmonies and instrumental really stand out as being impressive. Bill Monroe's voice sounds excellent, and he really picks up the pace on a number of the tunes. The reason I like this Monroe album is because of that beautiful rendition with Ralph Stanley and the fact that the album features different lead singers to compliment Monroe. This is pure traditional bluegrass gospel from not just Bill Monroe but a host of talented bluegrass artists.

5 out of 5 stars Cryin' Holy Unto The Lord.......1999-12-05

This Blue Grass gospel CD is a unique experience. Rousing Blue Grass mandolin rifts and harmonies with biblically instructive lyrics. 'I'm a gonna shine' is great for listening while doing chores! 'He'll let you in' is an encouraging message to the downcast. Don't miss this excellent part of our American Evangelical heritage.

this is a must have for any of you marty brown fans out there as i know there is many, i have all of his albums, and wouldnt take anything for them. he is such an awsome singer, he sings from his heart and soul, that is what got me - his voice he reminds me alot of hank williams sr, high and dry is the best song i have ever heard from his first album. all of these songs are great to. i sure do wish marty would come back and make some new albums. we sure could use his voice, when in this day and time the pop country seems to over take the real stuff. he will always be my favorite artist of all time. once again marty come back to us. kellysherman

It's catchy, it's short, it's fun to sing along with. Why is radio not playing this!? Oh, no matter. It's still a great song. I first heard this song at Fan Fair when she debuted it and I still have the tune in my head. Sara sings it very well and it blends her traditional country with a little more modern touch to it than her previous work. This is just one of many examples of what radio is missing.
