About the Artist
In the Fall of 1971, a dramatic change came to country singer Gerald Manuel’s family. The entire family received its salvation at a little country church in Shepherd, Texas. Gerald’s singing sons eventually formed a touring group and became known as the Manuel Family Band. Serving as leader, Mike Manuel guided his brothers from churches to concert halls all across the US and several foreign countries being lauded by Southern Gospel and Christian Country crowds alike.

In 1996, church founder, pastor, husband and father Mike Manuel struck out on his own as a solo performer when he moved to Nashville. That decision has paid big dividends. Since 1998, Mike has garnered 25 national and regional awards including Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year from The Country Gospel Music Association, The Country Gospel Music Guild, The Christian Country Music Association, The Christian Country Research Bulletin, and The International Country Gospel Music Association.

Along with the industry accolades, Mike has nine solo #1 chart songs and six full-length projects which includes four he recorded with the Manuel Family Band.

5 out of 5 stars Third and fourth LPs continue Haggard's streak.......2006-05-02

Capitol's deluxe series of Haggard 2-fer reissues takes its second step with Haggard's third ("I'm a Lonesome Fugitive") and fourth ("Branded Man") solo albums, both from 1967. This pair of releases continues to mix the electric twang of Bakersfield with the emotional directness of Johnny Cash, but with songwriting that's both increasingly personal and sophisticated. The doggedness Haggard displays in the face of romantic and personal dissolution adds metaphorical echoes to its autobiographical detail, resulting in songs that connect on first spin and reveal their layers over time.

"I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" was recorded with Haggard's band in transition. Guitarist Roy Nichols had left, and was replaced for these sessions by studio hotshots James Burton and Glen Campbell. Surprisingly, the loss of Nichols' signature licks isn't all that noticeable. Liz Anderson's title track (and Haggard's first #1 single) is the perfect opener, parlaying a fugitive's rootlessness into a metaphor for Haggard's continual run from romantic turmoil. Haggard's a drowning man, and whether it's the nostalgia of "My House of Memories," the loneliness of "Life in Prison," or the bottle of "Drink Up and Be Somebody," he's always struggling to keep from going under.

Haggard's debt to Bakersfield is heard in the Don Rich-styled harmony (provided by Glen Campbell) on "Mixed Up Mess of a Heart," and his favor for Jimmie Rodgers made its first appearance here with "My Rough and Rowdy Ways." Bonus tracks include a tougher pre-Capitol version of "Life in Prison" (recorded for Tally, but unreleased at the time), and a more straight-forward take of "Someone Told My Story" culled from discarded 1966 album sessions.

"Branded Man" continued Haggard's roll. With Roy Nichols returned to the fold, the title track complements "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" by showing that the parolee wears a scarlet mark as damning as the stripes of the escapee. Haggard offers several new originals, including the signature "I Threw Away the Rose," but he also takes on co-writers (Bakersfield legend Red Simpson for "You Don't Have Far to Go," and Bonnie Owens for "Gone Crazy"), and picks up songs from others, including a trio of tunes from Tommy Collins.

Collins' "Don't Get Married" is more hopeful in its longing than Haggard's typical songs of incarceration, and "I Made the Prison Band" actually feels pragmatic and light. Mexicali-styled guitars add a dramatic flair to several tunes, including the prisoner's romantic lament, "My Hands Are Tied." The album's most recognizable cover, the funereal classic "Long Black Limousine," is fine, but surprisingly underwhelming in contrast to Haggard's originals. Extras include early takes of "I Threw Away the Rose" and "Loneliness is Eating Me Alive," each of which lack the delicacy of the final album takes.

"Lonesome Fugitive" is the slightly more satisfying spin, but the beauty of Capitol's reissue series is that you don't have to choose. These two-fers include both original album covers (one on each side of the booklet), color photo reproductions, and newly struck liner notes. Though Haggard fans are likely to have a lot of this material on previous single-CD reissues or box sets, the logical album pairings and remastered 24-bit sound make these sets especially attractive. The only real nits one could pick is the absence of session credits, master numbering and chart positioning, as well as a lack of detail on some of the bonus tracks. These are minor issues for such a stellar series of five-star reissues. [?2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

2 out of 5 stars The start of an upward trajectory.......2006-02-22

The good bits - Branded and Exiled itself, title track and heavy metal monster, laying down a vicious artillery barrage in preparation for the assault onto the listener. The next good bit, the somewhat diverting Mordor - which alas is in the middle of the album after proceedings have been stunted by a few densely constructed wedges of proto-metal. The third and last ray of sunshine is a lumbering tune that closes out the album - Chains and Leather. Presumably the band have a sense of humour to do a song like this and when your final song on a disc is this cool, well it makes a punter be somewhat forgiving of the lead weighted metal they have staggered through to get to it.

This is a band that eventually grew up and away from music this dense, preferring a more cutting technique which allows the songs to breath more. But that came later.

3 out of 5 stars a "bridge" album from satan to pirate.......2005-03-04

Branded and Exiled basically is an album that acts like a bridge of the band of the old to the band of the new. The production is slightly better than their debut Gates to Purgatory, but only slightly. The production is still very rough but it somehow adds to the albums charm. Running Wild did drop most of the cheesy hell/satan lyrics. I said mostly as the catchy song Chains and Leather contains a few chuckling lyrics. The lyrical themes are actually more mature and resemble the lyrical nature of their album Under Jolly Roger to come after this. This album is a transition from their satan/black metallish debut to the speedier Pirate metal to come. That said, the album isn't a jaw dropper, but it does have some fist pumping metal anthems namely the title track and Mordor. Fans of the band will no doubt find something to like, but passive fans and people new to the group are better off finding another album to purchase instead.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Soul from a classic artist.......2007-06-04

I haven't reviewed an album in a while. I stumbled across this disc while loading CDs into my Itunes. I picked this CD up when it first came out in the mid 90's. I was doing a college radio show at the time. The show was a psychedelic 60's rock show. Somehow during that time I stumbled across Isaac Hayes boundary breaking Hot Buttered Soul album.

This album has many of the same characteristics. It's part rock, part soul, part jazz with the long extended jams.

Hayes version of "Fragile" is a classic in my mind. The other one that steals the show is "Thanks to the Fool". It starts out with a little rap. One thing I like about Hayes is that he puts you right into the center of the situation. Whether it be a break up or in this case stealing the girl - you're right there as the action happens.

On my show I used to refer to Hayes as the forgotten man of classic soul. Between all the tunes he co-wrote for Sam and Dave (universally recognized classics) or his early 70's era classics, to me his work stands up better than some of the over played Motown that we're always hearing about.

I respect Motown but for my money I'll take Memphis Soul (preferably STAX) anyday. I went and saw Hayes in Oakland opening up for Al Green in 2004. Hayes was the opener but to me he was the headliner - no disrespect against Al Green (both were great). Hayes had presence and was in top form.

5 out of 5 stars This is one "brand" that we all should possess!.......2001-08-16

Possessing one of the most distinctive voices in recorded music history, Hayes's "Branded" is a cool collection of up-tempo tracks and mellow ballads. Mixing his traditional and passionate love songs (such tracks as "Thanks to the Fool," and "Soulsville," a remake of his classic from "Shaft") with funky jams (a reworking of "Summer in the City" and "I'll Do Anything (To Turn You On," to name a few), Hayes shows what made him an icon of the 70's and 80's and a sought after "voice" frequently heard today.

Each of the first four songs that start the album segues into each other, making for an extended fourteen-minute masterpiece, containing Sting's "Fragile," performed in a manner that only Hayes could do. The presentation is a triumph of vocal and instrumental arranging. This release is the companion piece to "Raw & Refined," released the same year. Both complement each other and are essentials for fans of the artist.

Why he is not a continued presence on the music charts is one of the great mysteries of the new millennium.

      3 out of 5 stars A pretty melodic album..........2000-07-17

After listening this album, I thought, God, I've to listen it one more immediately... Isaac's "Fragile" (originally Sting) blew my mind away, because I could never even imagine that there could even be a better version of that. There's one more new version of "Summer In The City" with its typical Isaac Hayes' sounding. But After hearing the first 7 tracks, Isaac puts down his 'suprise box'. The end of the record is a little bit for sleeping-time, but this not means, that this album is not worth it - especially from this soul legend...

      4 out of 5 stars Great soul........1999-07-01

I'm not a big fan of soul music, but this CD is worth a listen. Hayes' voice glides over the music like magic.

I didn't like "Let Me Love You" because it never really took off. Some of the songs are staggeringly drawn out.

But when listening, this CD gave me peace of mind, in a strange way.

      5 out of 5 stars A Country Classic.......2006-01-06

Hey guys and girls - chances are if you're reading this, you're looking for a Merle Haggard album to buy. If you're looking for a Greatest Hits, this might not be it, although it has major appeal to Hag fans. However, and I say this with much reservation (and owning nearly every Merle album produced in the 60's): this is THE quintessential Hag album. Not one single dud on here. This is a tight, polished, cohesive album - a vision of what good music should be.

It's a shame how we discard music/musicians because it's our "father's" or "grandfather's" music. Frankly, country fans are the most supportive of musician's past...but the bottom line, BOTTOM LINE, is that this album is what good music should be. There are a few of Merle's classic hits (2 of these songs went Top 10), but this is overall a classic album. There should be hundreds of reviews here - this should be in any proud country boy's collection (I wouldn't say this if I didn't think so - some of his albums have some so-so songs).

For $5.98, put it into rotation for a while - if you like classic country, without the gimmicks, fanfare, or hoo-rah, check this out. Merle Haggard can sing you a hell of a tune, and the backing musicians are tops - sincerely. And man, can he write a song...goodness.

I'm not one to state that MY opinion is the RIGHT opinion - hey, this isn't for everyone. But spin this album a couple of times if you want to hear the roots, and you'll thank me, I promise.

      One of his best.

      5 out of 5 stars Branded Man.......2005-08-02

the previous reviewer is a f***ing moron, and has no concept of good music.

now that that's out of the way, on to the album: it's an all-time country classic. there isn't a dud on the whole disc. he's not just making these stories up, either. when he sings about being in prison, it's a true story. the songs are so real and heartfelt, something that is rare even in country music these days. he was at Johnny Cash's san quentin performances, and was rather inspired by the man in black. this is my favorite album by Merle Haggard. at this price, you can't afford NOT to pick it up.
