Great collection.......2004-11-19
Great collection of songs. I can always listen to Billy Ray Cyrus, I never tire of his great voice. Worth buying.
The Ultimate Billy Ray Album.......2004-08-11
Now this is what i call a greatest hits. 21 songs, you cant beat that.It blows the Cover To Cover hits package away.Except for the loss of "One Last Thrill" it covers all his main hits. Its a shame Billy Ray gets a bad rap all these years about his early years.I think he has blossomed into a better artist.Shame on you people who trash Billy, because back then you was singing in the car and line dancing to "Achy Breaky Heart".You all know who you are.So enjoy his music now and forever.
banging.......2004-07-10
I like this albm and is good cos billy heart achy breaky like mine init. have been achy breaky since ma badger Joeline got out of hers cage and run int'ut road dis album like a shoulder to cry one. nab this disc cos it like full emotional meltdown but with ZZ Top in, five stavs
Aural Delight.......2004-07-09
Billy delivers Country & Western warbles like no other. He has the charisma, the charm, the looks and the lyrical aptitude. I wish I was living in a small corner of Billy's head so that I would be a party to his musical genuis all the time. This is also an incredible versatile album, it perfectly suits driving, housekeeping, relaxing and seducing. There is something for everyone on this Billy Xtravaganza, including the timeless heartbreak ballad and line dancing anthem 'achy breaky heart'. What makes this musical maelstrom so perfectly peachy, is that you know Billy means each and every heart felt word he sings. You know he has been through the heartbreak, the tough times, and come through, like a rhinestone cowboy on the other side, strong, all powerful and ready to claim 'his woman'. If Billy wasn't a singer, he'd be a superhero. One things for sure, at the gas station of lurrrve, Billy didn't get the self service pump.
gentle touch of bluegrass with that family edge.......2004-07-09
I have to say, Billy Ray Cyrus's work has been something of an epiphany for me and this Best Of is no exception. Not just changing my musical tastes but my life as well.
Life was never easy growing up in a British city. Dont wear checkered Levi's workshirts, my father would say. Comb your hair. Shave that mullet off. And for Christ's sake son, stop touching your sister.
So many days were spent rushing home from work in my toyoat Hi Lux just so that I could indulge in the feel of hot straw and faecal-encruted dungarees, long after the house had been vacated by my family after my suggestions of true Southern-style interbreeding, and this album has eased away the guilt for my wrongdoings like cheap treacle out of a paedophile's hand.
I cant reccommend Billy's sultry yet unshaven southern twang enough, especially if you are a british man with a penchant for barn dance, like me. You owe this to yourself.

Simply Classic Country.......2007-01-03
If you wanted to look for a very good classic country music CD, this is it. But on top of that, this one adds a very powerful feeling for the country that verges in the emotional with the song Some Gave All. Eventhough this was written many years ago, it really applies to the days we're living today and i really enjoy the lirycs of the song, as i totally agree with what they mean!
The rest of the songs are also excellent! And they are a perfect reflection of different aspects in the life of most Americans, however i guess they could also reflect aspects in the life of many other people in the world as well.
Review the musical content, not the hair.............2006-11-03
I've been guilty of it myself, commenting on the foibles of the artist rather than the content of the disc. I'll try to correct that. Right off the bat, eliminate AchyBreaky. Ok, get over it. It was 10years ago-it's done, he's on Pax Tv, he's suffered enough. This is good basic 90's country that really is quite the norm now days. To call it groundbreaking is obviously wrong, but a lot of country acts "choose" their songs from huge books of writers material. The selections here are great. Its very listenable and again, discount the A-Breaky and the mullet, it's not that bad. Worth 9.00 bucks? You bet!
White trash music.......2006-05-06
He's got it all... The mullet, the accent, the line dancin that all the white trash loves. Just horrible. This guy was the first clue that mainstream garbage had fully taken over.
Standard "walk along" country, with some spark`s here and there........2006-02-06
Billy Ray Cyrus. Well what shall we say ? Exept for the "hit song" Achy Breaky Heart (Track 2) there`s not very much to shout "hurray" for on this CD. This is standard country. Veeeery standard. It`s to sterotyped in a way. Let`s move on. Track 1 Could``ve been me, has some gut`s but it` doesn`t kick off in the right direction for a good melody, sorry to say. The best track is the hit song Track 2 Achy Breaky Heart is an enjoyable, danceable, and good country song. Cyrus voice on this one show`s some spark and variation`s quality that`s difficult to discover on the other tracks. Quality all over, in every department`s. On Track 3 She`s not cryin anymore Cyrus, show`s that he has a good ear fore ballad writing. One of the better ones on this CD. Track 4 Where`m i gonna Live is a tearjerker lyrics wise, with a piano in the background, as an understatment. This is anyway very stereotyped, and easy forgetable. Track 5 These Boots are made for walkin, the Lee Hazelwood hit song has been done with many artist`s with more or less luck. Cyrus is not more lucky, and doesn`t make it as it`s own. Track 6 Someday, somewhere, and somehow, somehow a boore to listen to. Stereotyped in every department. No spark, no guts, and no country feel. Track 7 Never thought I`d fall in love with you, has tempo, oh yes, but nothing "more". It kick`s off here and there, but that`s all. Track 8 Ain`t no good goodbye, is a song which has nothing to do with good quality country, but sound more or less as "stewed prunes"
with sugar on,gooey and overly sweet. Aiiik ! Track 9 Im so miserable has some spark, and and rythm that makes it an ok listen. The CD ends with the title track Track 10 Some gave all. The song it`s ridden with clishees. There`s nothing more to say. Billy Ray Cyrus, is anyway "likeable " country music, with some spark`s here and there.
the "Y" factor.......2005-01-21
Perhaps if Billy Ray didn't have so many "Y"s in his name, and the song he is most known for didn't end in them to make a catchy title, his life would have been different. Perhaps if Bill Cyrus had sung "My Aching Heart", he wouldn't have had such a massive hit, but would have gained the respect of the "music snobs" who trash his talent with those other "Y" words, "hokey" and "corny".
They sell him way short. He has a marvelous deep, throaty voice, an excellent songwriting gift, and an all-round ability as a performer, with a down-home funky style that makes his music interesting, heart-warming, and very enjoyable.
This CD has the feel of a live club recording, rather than a studio session, with an "up-close" sound. The band is terrific, and deserves mention: Terry Shelton, guitar / Barton Stevens, keyboards / Greg Fletcher, drums / Corky Holbrook, bass, with additional guitars by Keith Hinton and Sonny Garish (steel).
Billy Ray wrote "Someday, Somewhere, Someday", and co-wrote five others (tracks # 3, 4, 8, 9, and 10). I like the humor and musicianship in "Wher'm I Gonna Live ?" which he wrote with Cindy Cyrus, and he also wrote the patriotic hymn that is another favorite of mine with her, "Some Gave All".
His cover of Lee Hazelwood's "These Boots are Made for Walkin'" that was a hit for Nancy Sinatra in 1966 is fabulous, and one of the numbers on the CD that make great dance music.
Good songs, wonderful vocals, and a tight, skilled band all come together to make this a solid country CD, well deserving of praise. This album stayed a record 17 weeks in the # 1 spot on both Country and Pop charts, and total playing time is 36'01.

No matter how you feel about the pride of Flatwoods, Kentucky, you've got to give him credit for sheer grit. An embarrassment to Nashville after his Chippendalesish (and hugely popular) line-dancing anthem "Achy Breaky Heart" (1992), the mullet-wearing Billy Ray Cyrus went on to make credible music (1993's mostly ignored It Won't Be the Last) before segueing into acting (Doc, Hannah Montana). Yet on Wanna Be Your Joe, an album he largely wrote or co-wrote, Cyrus doesn't do himself many favors. The quality of writing never reaches the upper tiers, and several of the songs come across as rough demos instead of fully produced cuts. His slim baritone, once gravelly and testosterone-pumped, is dry as a stump, and the hunger and passion that drove his earlier recordings also seems to slumber, whether he's paying tribute to his heroes (Dale Earnhardt, Ronnie Van Zant) or pondering lost loves. Cyrus shows his sense of humor in referencing his former hairstyle ("I Want My Mullet Back," a rootsy rock excursion), and hits all the working-class touchstones (the loving husband/father of the promising title cut, the blue-collar protest of exorbitant fuel costs of "A Pain in the Gas"). But the album never really catches fire until he brings on the guests: George Jones and Loretta Lynn for the down-home "Country Music Has the Blues" and daughter Miley for "Stand." Just as in the plots of his TV series, on Wanna Be Your Joe, friends and family save the day. --Alanna Nash
Album Description
Everyone knows the name of the colossal single from Billy Ray Cyrus' record-breaking 1992 album "Some Gave All" - the infamous "Achy Breaky Heart" (which also inspired a line dance craze). And since then, Billy Ray has enjoyed great success as not only as a country music star but as a successful songwriter and actor.
In Billy's two decades long career he has achieved: 3 #1 singles and 6 Top 10 singles in addition to the platinum and gold albums 2 AMA awards, 1 CMA award 6 TNN/Music City News awards 2 MovieGuide Awards (for "Doc") He STILL holds the record for 17 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart for "Some Gave All" (the longest time this was held by a debut artist). Has been recognized by the Kennedy Center Honors Received the Bob Hope Congressional Medal of Honor Society Entertainer's Award Country Radio Broadcaster's Artist Humanitarian Award Been inducted into the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall of Fame
As an artist, Billy Ray Cyrus continues to create music that is close to his heart
music that rocks, can touch one's emotions, songs that are reverent and some even satirical, and all styles are evident on his CD debut release on New Door Records, "Wanna Be Your Joe."
Customer Reviews:
A Welcome Surprise.......2007-01-22
I personally never liked "Achy Breaky Heart" and because of that never listened to Billy Ray Cyrus. With that being said, Last June I and my Family attended the CMA in Nasville, TN and got to see and hear Billy Ray Cyrus live and I got to tell you he was great. Ed King from Lynyrd Skynyrd was on lead guitar and it just made it better. My kids watch Hanna Montana on T.V. and went crazy when Billy Ray took the stage, I never picked up that he was on the show!
The above CD is filled with great songs that are performed well. A welcome surprise.
I gave it a chance and Im glad I did!!!
I Want a Mullet Mom!!!!.......2007-01-07
Well, long story short, I've been a fan of Billy Ray for years, and through the Disney channel, I learned that he was at it again with "Wanna Be Your Joe." As soon as I found out, I purchased the album, and have not regretted it yet! One of the more well rounded albums, it has plenty of ballads, and plenty of rock. Overall my 3 personal favorites are "I Want My Mullet Back," "Country Music Has the Blues" with George Jones and Loretta Lynn, and "Stand" which features his daughter Miley. If you're a fan of good music, then you need to get this album! He sounds as good as he did way back when his heart was achy and breaky!
Billy Ray strikes again!!.......2006-11-03
A very kind albun with lovely ballads and powerful rocks songs. One of the best plays in her career... the special guests make it a really amazing play with such different style touch. Take it!!!
Excellent CD! Great Music From Billy Ray Cyrus.......2006-09-10
I was recently introduced to the music of Billy Ray Cyrus when a friend suggested I would like his CD "The Other Side". Like most of us who have hit middle age I remember when "Achy Breaky Heart" was a huge hit but I hadn't heard much Billy Ray music since then. I enjoyed "The Other Side" very much and because of that I decided to buy "Wanna Be Your Joe" and am very glad I did.
After listening to "Wanna Be Your Joe" a few times I have permanently joined the ranks of Billy Ray Cyrus fans. The CD has a great mix of songs and defiantly has something for everyone. If you like traditional Country you will find it in "Country Music Has The Blues". If you like Rock you will find it in "I Want My Mullet Back" which is a song that looks back on simpler times.
My other favorite songs on the CD are "Wanna Be Your Joe", "Hey Daddy", and the moving "Stand" where Billy Ray urges us all to stand up for what we believe in.
Simply put, you don't have to be a fan of Country music to enjoy this CD. If you are looking for good, well done, sincere music pick up a copy of "Wanna Be Your Joe". It's a wonderful effort from Billy Ray Cyrus.
Be Someone Else's Joe.......2006-09-09
So, Billy Ray Cyrus wants to be your `Joe.' Yes, that Billy Ray Cyrus, the "Achy-Breaky Heart" guy. Quite honestly, it's tough to forgive him for that incredibly stupid song, but somebody bought all those records, and that is why Billy Ray is still with us. The good news is that there is nothing here as blatantly sophomoric as that novelty line-dance favorite. The bad news is that there isn't much to cause me to rethink my basic impression. "Wanna Be Your Joe" is a likeable enough ballad about an everyday guy who aspires to true love, and it works in its own simple way, but certainly not enough to impress or inspire new fans. From there, though, things get predictable, both musically and thematically. Goofy novelty numbers make it nearly impossible to take this album seriously, and the titles say it all; "I Want My Mullet Back," "Ole What's Her Name" and "A Pain in the Gas" are even less original than their titles may suggest. "I Couldn't Be Me" is so blatantly a re-write of "Help Me Make It Through the Night" that I'd expect a lawsuit from Kris Kristofferson. Incredibly, not even George Jones and Tammy Wynette can add gravitas to the whiny, misinformed "Country Music Has the Blues." Doesn't Billy Ray recognize the irony of him singing about how country music has changed for the worse? Billy, you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
For bad measure, the balance of the album is dedicated to good-ol'-boy posturing and `new country' schlock. Worst of all are two morbid shout-outs to dead legends, including the sentimental swill of "The Man" (dedicated to NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt) and "The Freebird Fell," a tasteless tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. On the not-so-bad side is "How've Ya Been," a steel-guitar ballad (that remarkably suggests George Harrison) concerning regret, and "Hey Daddy" which pretty much covers the same ground. Other than that, there's not much left to sink in. I've given "Wanna Be Your Joe" three listens, and that's enough. Actually, it was too much; any more would hurt my achy-breaky brain. C Tom Ryan

Still Impressed.......2007-05-30
I have always been a huge Billy Ray fan. The first concert my daughter ever seen was Billy Ray @ Riverbend in Cincinnati. She was 10! His talent and genuine love of people and this gift that he has is not something that he takes for granted, but I believe that most of us listeners do take it for granted. When I became a Christian, I stopped listening to "secular" music. That was a decision that I made on my own to strengthen my walk with God. One day I was listening to the radio on-line at the office. This beautiful song came on. When it was over & the DJ said it was Billy Ray, I was stunned! So after a week of hearing it on the radio, I came on-line to see if it was available on any of his CDs. I was so excited to see that he had made a CD of 'faith based' music. Although Billy Ray didn't write all the songs on this CD like he normally does, the songs are written by some very well known Christian artists - Matthew West & Del Gray to name two.
This is a great CD. The messages thru the songs are good. If you know the Lord, you'll hear His messages throughout this CD, but the sound is soooooo Billy Ray. I just love it. Thank you so much Billy Ray!!!

Best effort.......2005-01-18
I truly believe this is Billy Ray's finest effort to date.
The songs are beautiful and really showcase his great voice.
Inspirational and uplifting.......2004-04-14
This is an amazing CD. If you only know of Billy Ray as that "Achey Breaky Heart" guy, you need to check out this CD. Billy Ray released one of the years best CDs that includes a great mix of country, pop/rock and gospel. No filler here - every single song on this CD is worth a listen. The songs themselves are inspirational and uplifting. A great CD from a tremendously underrated performer.
The Other Side.......2004-02-28
This is Billy Ray Cyrus best CD Ever. I want him to make more like this. I love the words to the songs They mean a lot. Great!!!
Proud to be his fan!.......2004-02-22
He touches my heart with his remarkable voice. And it feels like he truly meant every word that he sang. The moment he started the first note of "Face of God", I was hooked and couldn't stop the CD player. It's that good.
A talented singer like him is really rare nowadays, regardless of music genre.

I am not a country music listener, but Stand Still did it for me.
Great Album!.......2004-08-03
"What Else is There" Billy Ray Cyrus asks in the first track of Time Flies, and while he is talking about love, I'm talking about pure country music.
Time Flies has only one problem, it's hard to pick a stand out track on an album that is great overall. From the beautiful opening track "What Else Is There" to the inspiring acoustic re-take of "Some Gave All" Cyrus delivers 15 tracks of pure country music with just a touch of Southern Rock.
Billy Ray Gets Better and Better.......2003-09-23
If you are a Billy Ray Cyrus fan this is a must have every song on the album is great. I first heard alot of his songs from Time Flies in concert summer 2002. Also look for Billy's new album coming in October called The Other Side. i am a huge billy Fan since Some Gave All and have all of his albums which are great. Time Flies is just another example how great Billy is. Also you can catch billy's new videos on GAC.

I was so happy to see that this CD had the theme for BRC's new show "Doc", called "Stand Still" on it. I've been watching the show since the beginning, and now I'm hooked. I watch it every Sunday night. This CD is so great! I also love the first track "What Else is There"
TIME FLIES deserves to be heard! BRC outdid himself again!.......2003-07-10
Contrary to popular belief, Billy Ray Cyrus never "left" radio for television. Radio turned it's back on BRC long ago and all he has done is continue to turn out great record after great record, electrify audiences across the country with his energetic stage show, and spend a good amount of time acting.
If it wasn't for the acting, however, I'm not sure this album would've ever made it out. I'm sure happy it did though. Time Flies may be the best country album this year. Some favorites of mine are "Stand Still" (Theme of DOC), "I Still Believe", and the touching new single "Back To Memphis." It's a song that reminds us that although ABC and NBC aren't still sending all of their anchors to Iraq, the war is still going on and people are still dying. An added bonus is the acoustic version of what may be Billy's best penned song ever, "Some Gave All." Also included is a rocking September 11th tribute "Close to Gone."
Most albums that an artist puts out have only three or four songs that the buyer will enjoy and the rest are skipped. Not this album...All 15 tracks are great songs. I would recommend this album to a fan of music, regardless of genre because BRC is so diverse, he covers the entire spectrum on this album. Billy Ray Cyrus deserves to be heard and respected. Because everyone has their own opinions on music, there is no such thing as a guarantee. But, I GUARANTEE that Time Flies is the closest thing to being guaranteed a great listening experience as you can get. This CD should solidify all of his current fans and grab a few more new ones as well.

Trail of Tears.......2006-08-05
Overall a very good CD. Spotty, not everything of the highest caliber in my opinion however, overall an excellent work by a sometimes underated performer. Billy Ray has the potential of becoming one of the lasting stars, his body of work shows a very solid talent, I've liked his performance since the very first, he has maintained a steady growth, a maturation process, I don't think he has yet reached his peak, That gives a lot to look forward to!
Trail of Tears is a truly great song, while I have always hated Harper Valley PTA, no matter who does it! I hope Billy Ray just keeps on rolling along and we can look forward to more by this very talented artist.
One of country musics most daring performers!.......2004-04-04
"Trail of Tears" is a standout album, even for Billy Ray Cyrus. Though not the best album of his career (I'd say "Time Flies" holds that mark), "Trail" was named #30 in Country Weekly Magazine's 100 Greatest Albums of the Past Ten Years (1994-2004). Why, you're thinking, would an album (which doesn't get any airplay anymore), be named so high? Buy it, and find out.
BRC always excels on his albums. "Trail of Tears" is living proof. He also has a tendency to through together a mixture of music, while never making you doubt that he's country. The title track, for example, is basically a fancy bluegrass song; "Sing Me Back Home" is a good ol' traditional number; "Need a Little Help" is more than a little bluesy; "Harper Valley PTA" is a rocker; and "Three Little Words" is an emotional show-stopper.
He also always manages to mix content. The affore-mentioned "Harper" is a remake of the classic, women's-rights anthem about a "Harper Valley widowed wife." Cyrus shines on it; Tom T. Hall's lyrics are delightful. "Call Me Daddy" holds no punches, about a kid praying to his dead father; "Three Little Words" does the same, with a man pleading with his lover. "Need A Little Help" seems simple at first; however, it's lyrics are intricate and intoxicating. "Truth Is I Lied" sticks it to the woman who's suppressed her man for so long; "Should I Stay" features a man pondering just which fork in the road he should take. "Tenntucky" (co-written by Mark Collie) is a country/rock masterpiece, despite a somewhat cheesy title.
Billy Ray Cyrus's songwriting has never been world-class (he's no Kris Kristofferson), but he's better than most of his peers (and I think I just might include Toby Keith in there). On this album, BRC tells you--plain and simple--that he loves to rock, as long as it's country. Join him, if you haven't already. This album shows how a man can go from a radio friendly fashion statement ("Achy Breaky Heart," in case you didn't know immediately) to a statement of indepence--and superiority.
I love the flavor of this albulm.......2003-09-28
This blend of songs is one of my favorites, a fine example of the variations Billy is capeable of. I found the slow soothing tones in, I am Here Now, and Should I Stay, to be nothing short of enchanting. Truth Is I lied and Need A Little Help mesmorized me...Three little Words...made me almost swoon.
I anxiously await Billy to release an inspirational albulm. If my heart can take it...Don't stop Billy, Don't stop!!!
Trail of Tears -- The Return of Country Music.......2001-12-09
Fans met Billy Ray Cyrus when he burst on to the music scene, with the smash hit "Achy Breaky Heart," form his debut album "Some Gave All." Since that time I have purchased two more Billy Ray Cyrus albums. They are "Trail of Tears" and "Storm in the "Heartland."
Billy Ray withdrew form the spotlight for about three years after the realease of his second album "It Won't Be the Last." It nearly was... The cleche, "Out of sight out of mind," comes to mind.
"Trail of Tears" was a "comeback" album of medium success. I barely heard mention of it before it disappeared from the radio-waves. With "Trail of Tears" you have an album that returns to the fundamentals county with a little Bluegrass thrown in. You can tell when listening to the album "Trail of Tears" it's good.
In the making of this album, you can tell they were not trying to duplicate the success of "Achy Breaky Heart." "Trail of Tears," is the return of true country music, with the style that "is" Billy Ray Cyrus.
Recommended for the true country music fan.
Good reviews again!.......2001-10-28
"Trail Of Tears" is an awesome album. Billy Ray finaly started getting great reviews again when it came out. There's alot of Bluegrass-type stuff, but also some of that classic Billy Ray Cyrus sound. Billy Ray wrote the song "Trail Of Tears", and I find it to be extremely cool. This album is becomming rare in stores, so get it now!

not bad.......2006-07-29
To those who think Billy Ray Cyrus was a one-hit wonder, I recommend that you give this album a listen. It contains several of his big hits ("Some Gave All," "Could've Been Me," "Busy Man," and of course "Achy Breaky Heart") and showcases his talents well. You might be surprised. This is one of my favorite albums. If you like Billy Ray, this is quite possibly the perfect album for you. Truly amazing.
Great retrospective over the first part of Billy Ray's career.......2005-08-20
People are under the impression that Billy Ray Cyrus is done making music. Wrong! He still makes albums to this day. He is more well know for his early stuff which is what this CD consists of. All 10 songs were big hits and very familiar favorites. Yes, there is 'Achy Breaky Heart' but there is also 9 other great songs that did not receive as much radio play. This is a great collection of all his early hits and a great sing along CD!!!
Wonderful CD.......2004-03-11
Billy Ray has done it again and again with his newest albums like The Otherside and Time Flies. If you are looking to get some of his older hits this is a great choice! He is a wonderful singer and song writer. He puts his heart and soul into his music. Sad that more people will not give this very talented singer credit where credit is due! Please check out Southern Rain too!

OBVIOUSLY SOMEONE DOESN'T REALLY KNOW MUSIC!!!.......2003-11-07
He is one of these guys that just likes to speak of what his own tastes are...he probably knows nothing about music...have u actually taken the time to listen? A critic is what you are...BILLY RAY happens to be releasing albums to this day....infact he released 2 this year and both charted on BILLBOARD...I am someone that listens to everything from jazz, new age, blues, rock and country AND I am a musician who has an independent record label as well...I know talent when I hear it...BILLY RAY can actually sing and write...THE reason it appears that he only had one hit is because of people like this other reviewer...fickle, shallow americans that don't take the time to actually listen and read between the lines...they let everybody else and THE INDUSTRY decide for them...in other words they jump on the bandwagon!!! As far as this "BEST OF" album is concerned...it's not bad BUT where is TRAIL OF TEARS? AND STORM IN THE HEARTLAND for that matter!!! This is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars!!!
NO Star would've been more appropriate.......2003-07-10
In all honesty, now: is there ANYTHING to say about an..."artist" whose one sole "hit" was "Achy Breaky Heart?" How about: FORGOTTEN BUT NOT GONE? Go on back to the carwash, Billy Ray, your fifteen minutes were up some time during the last...millenium.

Ever since 1992's "Achy Breaky Heart" made him a commercial smash and critical whipping boy, Billy Ray Cyrus has struggled to overcome the "one-hit" stigma, and it wasn't clear he'd ever succeed. He has. No longer does he hide behind posturing. His vocals are stronger, more confident, and expressive. While his musical edge is modern, the occasional addition of steel and fiddles hasn't hurt. He believably conveys a wide range of emotions and moods: renewal on "You Won't Be Lonely Now," wistful nostalgia on "Southern Rain," the passion of "Everywhere I Wanna Be," romantic desperation with "Love You Back," and excruciating loneliness on "Without You." He ably delivers the acerbic, satirical "Burn Down the Trailer Park" and the roadhouse rockabilly tune "Crazy 'Bout You Baby." With all this, he can be forgiven the smarmy "Hey Elvis" and "We the People," a potential advertising jingle masquerading as a patriotic number. Rough as the late '90s were for Cyrus, they brought the BRC of 2000 real strength and maturity. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
What a voice!!!.......2003-09-02
I became Billy Ray's fan since "Some Gave All". I am not an American but the title track really moved me. And I found that the man has an incredibly expressive and beautiful voice. "It won't be the last" was another great one, but after that album it seemed to me Billy almost forgot that he could really sing and kept growling. I wish there were more songs which could REALLY showcast Billy's vocal and emotions, like "She's not crying anymore", "Ain't no good goodbye", "Somebody new" etc.
With "Southern Rain", I can finally relate this guy to the great singer I once admired. His vocal really shines in this album, with even deeper emotions. The songs are all lovely. He sang quite a few big ballads, and they are all great and they suit him so well. Besides the title cut, I especially love "Love you back", the way he sustained the highest note in the song is so powerful and moving. He's the kind of singer who can make an ordinary tune sound so beautiful. And with quality songwriting like in this one, you owe yourself checking it out.
To me, Billy Ray Cyrus is more than just a country rocker, he is defintely a very accomplished vocalist with a remarkable voice that shames most of the other pop singers. I always wonder why he isn't as big as he deserves to be. He truly has the superstar quality - he writes good music, he sings well, he looks good and he has a big heart! Need I say more?
Those who snoot and dismiss Cyrus without paying attention to his music don't know what they are missing.
Billy keeps it rough.......2003-04-08
Billy Ray Cyrus' voice has really matured in this album. After an excellent comeback with Shot Full of Love and an all new sound, Billy is stayiong on the same track as always, with gruff lyrics and catchy pop hooks. However, as always, there are the weak songs on this album that Billy can't seem to avoid. His voice isn't well suited for certain songs but he performs them anyway, creating a break in the album that just doesn't seem to fit. All in all, though, Southern Rain is worth the buy if you're a big Billy Ray fan. It is Billy at his most mature, and at times very heartfelt. However, it is not the best introductory album. If you are looking to start your Billy Ray Cyrus collection, start it with Some Gave All or Cover to Cover.
SOME GAVE ALL-through- SOUTHERN RAIN.......2002-12-13
each cd shows the wide range BRC is capable of, & each rates 5 stars to me. why this talent has been "black balled" to me is simple. the man is good looking & went to the top with his 1st cd & reviewers can't stand that. his success on tv makes it even worse. i listen to various country radio stations in diff. states & never hear his songs. since 9/11 why do we hear lee greenwood's tired ol' song every hour & not BRC's "some gave all"? not country enough? now we have Australian's & singers wearing wool hats like rappers (k.chesney) answer-pure JEALOUSY!!
Billy ain't Billy anymore.......2002-07-24
Billy Ray has steadily declined in his performances with each passing album. I base this on a standard of true country music. His first two CDs were exceptional. However, this and his last have left Nashville and country music long behind. If you want country music this CD doesn't deliver. If you like the typical Nashville Pop that emanates from Tennessee these days you may like it. Come on Billy how about gettin country again.
Wrong type of music.......2002-03-04
Billy Ray Cyrus really has a great voice but either his manager or Billy Ray are choosing the wrong type of music. This is another CD that does not hit the mark. This guy is singing songs where the music does not give his voice the opportunity to be heard. I have about 5 of his CD's and mostly have been disappointed in all of them except his first. Billy Ray can sing a ballad probably better that anyone and with feeling. This is the music that would get him recognized not the screaming songs. He very rarely puts a ballad on any CD's but when he does they are great. From other CD's listen to "She's not cryin anymore" and "When I'm Gone" then you will see what I mean. I am not buying anymore of his CD's until I am sure he has some ballads on them.
