Good, but "Very Best"?.......2007-07-18

Last year to mark her tour of Europe Sony/BMG issued "The Very Best Of Dolly Parton" a collection of some of her biggest hits. That album did very well on the European charts, so now we have "Volume Two". Because the first volume used most of her biggest hits, we're left here with few actual hits. That's not to say there aren't good songs on here, I just don't know that these are her "very best". Her covers of "Harper Valley PTA" and "In The Ghetto" are from early albums in her career when it was the norm to cover popular hits of the day. Her take on "In The Ghetto" has always been a favorite of mine though. The album does include some gems, her cover of Emmylou Harris's "Boulder To Birmingham" and her own original tracks "Down From Dover" and "Where Beauty Lives In Memory", two of her best story songs.
Although not everything on here is among her "very best", it is an enjoyable listen nonetheless.
By the way, despite what previous reviews would have you believe, all 19 tracks play just fine on the disc.

A good mix of hits and some high quality lp cuts. Here's the complete track listing :

There are 19 songs listed on the disc and back cover, however, only the first 16 play on the disc. the * notes billboard #1's. Put It Off Until Tomorrow is from Honky Tonk Angels with Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn. Rockin Years with Ricky Van Shelton, I Really Don't Want To Know with Willie Nelson and Please Don't Stop Loving Me is the only billboard number one by Dolly and Porter Wagoner. Overall pretty good, I would have chosen a few other and left off Boulder and Where Beauty Lives, but still worth it for the Dolly collector.

This is the one to get........2007-02-26

This is a greatest hits collection, but it captures Dolly Parton, a powerful and uniquely talented artist, singer and composer, before she hit it so big that you might never recognize who she was at the beginning. "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love" are standouts but so are all the others, really worth getting.

Just as I remember it........2006-10-13

My mother and I listened (and sang along) to this seletion on 8 track tape when I was a little girl, over and over again. I loved it then, and I love it now. Some of these songs have been changed in more recent recordings, and some of the songs can't be found on other Dolly CDs. That is why I am glad I bought this CD.

The best stuff I've ever heard by Dolly Parton.......2005-05-29

Last weekend I found this LP at an antique shop that sells some pretty good records. (The free poster was the main selling point.)
I had no idea how much and how quickly I'd fall in love with this. The opening song "Jolene" had me hooked. It's actually a really good song to shake your booty to.
Most of the songs are right around 3 minutes, which I really like. There's never a boring ending or a chorus that goes on for 2+ minutes. Dolly's voice just soars over you. It's a great album to sing along to.
I prefer Dolly's "older" music (the 70s primarily). I think this was a great find. This a great start for anyone unfamiliar with Dolly.

Dolly Parton 101.......2001-05-17

If you own nothing else by Dolly Parton, please start here. All her talents are here at their peak. Songs like "Coat of Many Colors" put a lump in the throat and a tear in the eye. But don't mistake -- there is nothing corny about a child so poor her mother has to fashion her a coat out of old scaps left over from another woman's sewing - a charity grab bag. Dolly was that child, she wore that coat. I have the Coat of Many Colors album which shows a school photo that was taken of Dolly wearing that coat, with tears in her eyes because she had just been ridiculed by her classmates for wearing rags. Dolly turned that heartbreak into triumph. That is why she is a songwriting genius and a Country Music Hall of Famer. Jolene gave me cold chills the first time I heard it. It still does today. The otherworldy harmony of Dolly singing with herself is only one of the classic touches that give this song such a punch. The theme of a woman begging the other woman "please don't take my man" may sound corny but when you hear Dolly sing it, you believe it. Many other female singer have sung Jolene but none can even come close to Dolly's original. I Will Always Love You is a song that has powerful emotional impact. Everyone has to say goodbye to someone they love at least once in life. Death will take our loved ones eventually. This song is nonspecific enough to apply to almost any goodbye situation. I even liked Whitney Houston's version of it, mainly because she copied a lot of Dolly's vocal trills. I suppose a lot of people are tired of this song because of Houston, but listen to this one sometime just after you've said goodbye to someone you didn't want to part from. It will get you everytime. There is so much variety in these 10 songs and all but two were written by Dolly. Porter Wagoner, her boss from 1967-1974, wrote When I Sing for Him, and Lonely Coming Down. Porter is not usually able to write songs that are as good as Dolly's own, but on Lonely Coming Down, she never sounded better. Although this was her second "Best of Dolly Parton" album on RCA, they have neglected to put the 1970 one on CD. Buy this, the 1975 compilation and enjoy Dolly at her prime. Then go buy her latest work. Still the same amazing voice of an angel. Still one of the best songwriters in Country Music.

Dolly is something else!.......2001-01-03

Dolly Parton has such a beautiful crystalline voice, and this album has some of her best early work. "Jolene" holds a certain memory for me from the 70's...whenever I hear it, it transports me back to a certain Christmas Day when I was 16 and working in a nursing home in the laundry room, and having to wash all the sheets out by hand as the washing machine had broken down. I was feeling very sorry for myself, and wanting to go home to spend Christmas with my family. And "Jolene" came on the radio, and miraculously it cheered me up...even though it wasn't a particularly happy song, but Dolly just seemed to have what was needed for that sad little 16 year old back then. This album holds some great songs, and I recommend it highly.

A GOOD BUY.......2005-11-12

Omigod..."Take Me Home, Country Roads" by Skeeter Davis on this compilation? Well then everyone should buy this. This is a really good CD. There are one or two slow moments, but otherwise this is the epitome of country and western.

Excellent Collection of Vintage Country 70's Hits.......2005-07-05

This is a wonderful collection of vintage 1970's country music hits, and yes purists, these are the originals. All of these recordings were released on RCA with six exceptions: Loretta Lynn (Decca), Susan Raye (Capitol), The Kendalls (Ovation), and Margo Smith, T. G. Sheppard, and the Bellamys (all Warner Bros.) RCA really dominated country music in the 70's (and the 60's and 80's too) so it's no surprise they had so many of the tracks here. Makes you wonder why they didn't go for an all RCA collection but the other tracks are absolutely wonderful (though the Bellamys have always been too soft rock for me and rarely country enough). You not only get the RCA superstars like Dolly, Waylon, and Ronnie, it's nice to see Dickey Lee here and whoa, what a nice surprise to see Dottsy (I'LL BE YOUR SAN ANTONE ROSE) who had a short but fairly successful stint for RCA. The album opens with Skeeter Davis' wonderful cover version of "Take Me Home Country Roads" but that song was never released as a single for her; Skeeter's 70's hits couldn't match her 60's sensations but she still had a number of top 40 country songs in the 70's so it's odd one of those wasn't used for her track here. Certainly you could hardly have a RCA country compilation without Skeeter D. This is a very good collection of 1970's country hits with some songs not easy to find.

This BEST OF DOLLY PARTON release from the U.K. is a wonderful collection but buy the BEST OF DOLLY PARTON from Belgium - it's got the very same 21 songs on it and it's four bucks cheaper!!

Genuine old-style country music.......2003-08-31

This excellent compilation includes a substantial number of Dolly's greatest hits and memorable album tracks, although it excludes the duets with Porter Wagoner, some of her lesser hits and her later bluegrass excursions. It demonstrates her versatility in its great variety of styles, from wonderful weepy ballads like We Used To and I Will Always Love You to uptempo tracks like Jolene, the hit from the movie 9 to 5 and her 1978 nod to disco, Baby I'm Burnin'. My favorites include the lovely Love Is Like A Butterfly and the classics made famous by others: Harper Valley P.T.A and D-I-V-O-R-CE, both of them great story songs. Parton has made such a spectacular contribution to country music that no Best Of can easily claim to contain her greatest work, but this album does a fair job of displaying her soulful voice and some of her timeless songs.

This album is terrific! I hadn't heard a few songs on this album,
and I buy any Dolly album even if it's only got one or two songs that I haven't got! My favourite is "Baby I'm Burnin'" because the lyrics are very strong. This is very original Dolly work.
Amongst the tracks are everyone's favourites; "Mama Say A Prayer"
"Jolene" "9 To 5" and "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?"
Changing the subject,if you are thinking of buying "Little Sparrow," I think you are making a fab choice. Go buy it!

Brief intro to Dolly.......2002-01-18

This short collection gives a good introduction to the varied work of Dolly Parton. The pop hits are here (9 to 5, Here You Come Again) along with some of her most beautiful country songs (Jolene, I Will Always Love You, Coat of Many Colors), as well as some songs that fall somewhere in between (Do I Ever Cross Your Mind). No, it's not complete. Unfortunately, Dolly recorded on enough different labels that there really is not a "definitive" greatest hits collection. This inexpensive collection, though, is a good start for the casual Dolly fan.

Another compilation from the best, and yes, it would be nice if there were more, but its still outstanding! A collection of some of her hits from the 70's and 80's. I got this for Christmas, and I love it. The time length of 1-9: 2:43, 2:56, 4:01, 3:25, 3:02, 2:38, 2:53, 4:11, 3:16. All of these, like "Jolene," "I Will Always Love You," are the original version. Beginning with the motivational "9 To 5," and closing with the real sweet "But You Know That I Love You," this collection is the best there is and beautiful.

This compilation was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted "Coat of Many Colors" "Jolene" and "9 to 5". Believe it or not, it's not necessarily easy to find all of these songs on an inexpensive greatest hits package. It's a wonderful buy for the price. More importantly, it has induced me to buy more of Dolly's CDs.

Great CD - Received Damaged.......2007-06-27

This CD was to be used for my May 19,2007 bride for her ceremony music.
The CD arrived damaged and Amazon did not have anymore in stock.

Disappointing.......2004-10-31

A mostly music compilation that sounds like a creative mixing genius put it together. Saddly, the wedding entrance march is sung in German (I think). Some of the music is a little "thin" instead of being "full bodied". The wedding exit march will put listeners to sleep. I wish listening samples had been available or I would have saved the money.
