Unlike many men, Alligator Records never forgets an anniversary. "The country's largest contemporary blues label," as it rightly bills itself, has released multidisc compilations celebrating its 20th, 25th, 30th, and now 35th years. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, only tracks recorded for an artist's first Alligator disc are chosen for this chronologically presented summary of music that stretches from Hound Dog Taylor's electrifying 1971 label debut to Mavis Staples's in 2004. Although the imprint made a tentative stab at reggae in the mid '80s, its roster generally upholds the "genuine houserocking music" credo Alligator has boasted as a tagline since the early days. Whether reviving the careers of blues rockers (Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, Lonnie Mack, Elvin Bishop) or ageing icons with plenty of gas left in their tanks (Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Katie Webster, Mavis Staples, James Cotton, Guitar Shorty) or finding new blood to carry on the traditions (Michael Burks, Corey Harris, Dave Hole, Tinsley Ellis, Shemekia Copeland), Alligator sets the standard for what an independent label can achieve. These 35 nuggets extracted from a catalog of 225 albums only begin to tell the label's story, but there's not a weak one in the lot. Founder Bruce Iglauer's intriguing and insightful liner notes for each act add depth to the tunes, making 35x35 a representative sampler that's also an exhilarating listening experience, and a fascinating overview of American roots music. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

35 X 35 is not just another best-of compilation. Alligator founder and president Bruce Iglauer and staff chose to spotlight songs from the Alligator debut release from each featured artist. From "She's Gone" (the very first track on the very first Alligator album, 1971's Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers) to the legendary Mavis Staples' chilling "A Dying Man's Plea," 35 X 35 is effectively a chronological history of Alligator, a story told in music highlighting every style of blues and roots music the company has released. From the searing hard blues of Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, Albert Collins, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy to harmonica-driven workouts from Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite and William Clarke to the Gulf Coast piano blues of Professor Longhair, Katie Webster and Marcia Ball to the acoustic music of Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women and Corey Harris, it is clear that Alligator Records has been, and will remain, at the forefront of modern blues music in all of its many shades. With personal notes on each track from Iglauer in the accompanying 40-page booklet, 35 X 35 is proof of the staunchly independent label's single-minded vision for all these years: to record nothing but deeply rooted "Genuine Houserockin' Music."

great retrospective. true blues - soulful, raw & edgy, fun, smooth, heartbreaking - it's all here. highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous bargain.......2007-02-26

You're paying about 35 cents a song for great contemporary blues performances. I don't think there's a better bargain on Amazon. Very guitar centric, some good harmonica solos too. Grab it if you like electric guitars playing blues.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine Soul Rockin' Music.......2006-09-07

Even though this package only compiles material from Alligator Records, you probably won't find a more fascinating tour through the history of the Blues over the last 35 years. Of course, Alligator has a knack for signing up the most interesting Blues maestros. This compilation shows the development of cutting-edge Blues over the namesake era, ever since Alligator's inaugural release with Hound Dog Taylor in 1971. During much of this era, the Blues was still progressing, before settling into the respectful revivalism of recent years. In the 70s, Alligator was at the forefront with new artists who added flavor to tried-and-true styles, like the sinister Son Seals or the groovy Lonnie Brooks. Also during that decade, Alligator brought several veteran masters back into prominence, with powerful new material by the likes of Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, and Professor Longhair (noteworthy for his authoritative New Orleans style). As this compilation rumbles along, we hear a surprising amount of experimentation and progression in the 1980s, as interesting new artists expanded the basic template of the Blues, including some great finds like Lil' Mo & the Blues Imperials and Little Charlie & the Nightcats. The songs here from the 90s and 00s show that even the genius artists at Alligator followed the trend in Blues to solidify the classic template, with technical chops becoming more important than innovation - notwithstanding intriguing gospel-inflected works from the Holmes Brothers and the queenly Mavis Staples. But thanks to the impeccable expertise and taste exercised by Alligator when signing masters both new and old, this compilation is a must for any fan or historian of modern Blues. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars A great range of great artists.......2006-06-02

This double-CD set has great artists, great selections from the artists, and a killer set of liner packaging. You get some choice information and showings by legendary cats as well as non-household names, with explanations as to why they were great (as if the music wasn't doing that job already). And at the price, you can't beat the value.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection for anyone.......2006-04-27

If you're just getting into contemporary blues or you've been listening for awhile, you're going to love this collection. Alligator has been one of the class acts of the indie labels for a long time and these discs give you an idea why they are so well thought of. 35 artists doing the first track from their first Alligator release. Marica Ball, Coco Montoya, Lonnie Mack, Johnny Winter, William Clarke and the list goes on with not a weak cut in the carload. These type of samplers are great if you're just getting into this type of music since you do get a wide selection of artists and styles. Alligator has released double disc anniversary sets in honor of yeas 20, 25, 30 and now, 35. They're all great to listen to, so grab one or all of them and have yourself a party with genuine houserocking music from people who know how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Great times relived.......2007-06-15

We have heard Marcia Ball in person twice and were blown away by her performances both times. This live CD helps us relive those great evenings. She is such a talent, unlike some performers we have loved in person and not liked as well on CD. This CD proves that listening to her is about as good as the live show. Her diversity, from La-ti-da, to Louisiana 1927, makes for a great combination of songs. We discovered, also, on a long trip home from the airport in the middle of the night, that this CD is great for keeping a very sleepy driver awake! We highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An AWESOME Vintonese Rocker .......2007-04-11

It is hard to say this is the best she has done because Marcia rocks the house down on everything she does. "Down the Road" is full of down home music with hits such as: Down the Road - Louisiana 1927 - Crawfishin.
Its safe to say, buy it, listen to it and relish it. This will truly liven up a party when you plug this one in!

5 out of 5 stars A real treat!.......2007-03-09

Marcia Ball, from Vinton, Louisiana, has such a unique style... this CD is a treat for anyone who enjoys New Orleans style music, and any type of music, actually. Marcia has phenominal range. It'll get you up and moving!

4 out of 5 stars Marcia goes live.......2006-03-22

I was hoping this live album would bring out all the energy Marcia brings to live performances and to a great extent it did. I find her studio albums burdened with ballads and just not the same as watching her pound the keyboard and sing. This is a generally consistent album of her best material, except for the puppy dog song but I may be in a small minority on that. GR

4 out of 5 stars A little piece of home.......2006-02-25

The first time I heard Marcia Ball was in downtown Dallas at the Farmers Market eating breakfast with my husband. A gentleman was playing music for those eating on the outside court. The music was so great that after we finished eating we went up to him to find out who that artist was and needless to say it was Marcia Ball...we enjoyed it them and still enjoy it. I love to listen to it after a hard day at work...it sooths my soul and brings a back a little piece of home life.

Amazon.com essential recording

Guitar lovers will flip over this reissue's new bonus tracks: a conversation in which Stevie Ray Vaughan extols the virtues of Jimi Hendrix's playing and then essays them all in a medley of "Little Wing/Third Stone From the Sun." There's also the brief slide-guitar instrumental "Slip Slidin' Slim." What's breathtaking about these and the 10 remastered cuts that were the original 1985 album are the remarkably live amplifier tones. It sounds as though Vaughan's plugged directly into your stereo--especially at the climax of "Little Wing," where his Stratocaster feeds back through a wall of spinning Leslie speakers in a fit of psychedelic bliss. Otherwise, this CD still seems like a creative holding pattern for Vaughan, despite the addition of keyboardist Reese Wynans to broaden his band's palette. Nonetheless, the prophetic "Change It," which foreshadowed Vaughan's recovery from addiction by a year, and his in-concert staples "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love" and "Life Without You" debut here. --Ted Drozdowski

Amazon.com

This 1985 release, Vaughan's third, marks a fittingly impressive close to his classic period. Reese Wynans' keyboards give Vaughan's sound added depth and pushes the music in a more polished direction, one with stronger elements of jazz and soul. Vaughan's serrated guitar work is stunning as usual, boasting expressive bends, passionate flurries, and pained wails. As on the first two albums, Vaughan opens with a furious instrumental, the groovy "Say What!" "Lookin' Out the Window" has an R&B style and the superb "Gone Home" settles into a mellow jazz mood. The uptempo "Look at Little Sister" and the super-slow "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up on Love" display Vaughan's mastery of straightforward Texas blues. Vaughan also works up Earl King's "Come On" and shows sensitivity on the ballad "Life Without You." -- Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Classic Vaughan Record.......2007-04-06

Stevie Ray Vaughan was rising in prominence as of the great modern bluesman when he released Soul To Soul. This record cemented his reputation, and put to rest any thoughts that he might have been a faddish musician whose influence and impact would wane after a few years.

Some of his most popular, most treasured cuts are on this record. His theme song "Say What," "Look At Little Sister," "Change It," and "I Ain't Gonne Give Up On Love" are now part of the modern blues firmament. This release doesn't have the jazz riffs of Couldn't Stand The Weather, but it more than stands up on its own.

2 out of 5 stars Give me the first two records instead..........2007-02-08

Okay, some of this is awesome: the ballads Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love and Life Without You are the best; Change It is a great blues-rocker, and his guitar livens up even weaker material like Say What! and Come On, pt. 3. Still, this is a thin album overall. Lookin' Out the Window; Look at Little Sister; You'll Be Mine and Empty Arms are among Stevie's worst. Stick to the first two records instead, plus maybe In Step.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL TO SOUL - STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN.......2006-07-06

With each new album you are able to hear subtle improvements and changes in Stevie Ray's style. Even though he uses the same songs he's sung in previous albums, they are refined and continue to be a joy to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT THE HELL!?.......2006-03-25

What am I missing here? This is an incredible album, even without the bonus tracks that make it beyond incredible. I think some SRV "fans" resent him making an album that has cross-over appeal. Hell, I would say "Change It," "Lookin' Out the Window," "Look At Little Sister," and "Say What" are as good a songs as SRV ever did. But there are a lot more great songs as well. And he does throw a bone to the blues/jazz crowd with the songs "Gone Home" and "Empty Arms." Of course the two Hendrix bonus tracks will blow you away. I will repeat what someone else has already said, Stevie played Jimi better than Jimi played Jimi. To people getting into SRV, trust me, this is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic and timeless.......2005-12-13

Never mind the nay sayers who have posted a few negative reviews here. This is an excellent CD that every true SRV fan must own.

Album Description

The Best of the Funk Years from the Original Gangster of Love

Johnny "Guitar" Watson was a key figure in blues, R&B, soul and funk. From his first records in 1952 to his last in 1994, Watson won the admiration of everyone from Lightnin' Hopkins to Jimi Hendrix to Prince, his influence pervading five decades of American music. At a time when giants roamed the earth, Johnny stood as tall as any of them.

The two-CD set The Funk Anthology is the first collection to pay proper tribute to his groundbreaking funk recordings, many of which have been sampled numerous times by some of the top names in hip-hop. The Funk Anthology is the first release in Shout! Factory's reissue campaign of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's funk albums; 8 individual albums will be reissued in 2005-06, along with a new album consisting of previously unreleased material.

This 2-CD set contains tracks from all of his out-of-print late-'70s and early-'80s funk albums, plus two tracks from his Grammy-nominated 1994 comeback album, Bow Wow. Includes "Superman Lover," "Ain't That a Bitch," and other funk classics that have been sampled by Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Redman, Montell Jordan, and many others. Also features six previously unreleased cuts and deluxe packaging, including a 32-page booklet.

A man ahead of his time. No wonder he was one of Frank Zappa's Idols.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-02-15

This is a very good compilation of JGWs funk work. It is ideal for anyone who wants the best of his various funk albums. There is a lot of humour in his lyrics, underpinned by some very tight and funky grooves, laced with lots of blues and jazz guitar licks. Excellent liner notes on an extensive inside folder with colour photographs. This is an all time favourite for me. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars No-Brainer Purchase.......2005-10-07

Finally somebody got it right- to release the best, spaced-out funky-ass rhythm & blues jams from this wildcat often called a "genius" by his peers. The red carpet was rolled out for this lush 2 CD 31 song set (6 previously unreleased!) digitally remastered with a 28 page booklet and a plethora of photos spanning the years 1976-1994. The music matters most but the packaging must be praised. The foldout digi-pack even contains pics of both the front and back of each of the albums covered here. Before becoming a pimpin' funkster Watson was a manic, Texas blues stringer known for his rapid-fire guitar fingers and the classic "Gangster Of Love" (way before Steve Miller copped the phrase). He reinveted himself in the 70s and this set focuses on this fruitful period. All the big hits and key album tracks are here: "Superman Lover" (R & B #19), "Aint That A Bitch", the unstoppable "A Real Mother For Ya" (#5 R & B #41 Pop), "Tarzan", "Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty", "It's About The Dollar Bill", the updated "Gangster Of Love" (#32 R & B), "Booty Ooty", "Lone Ranger", "Love Jones" (#28 R & B), his comeback hit "Bow Wow" & more. Most interesting perhaps are the "new" cuts. When asked by biographer David Ritz about stuff in the vault Watson was quoted as saying: "There's gold in them there hills!". He may be right. "Baby's In Love With The Radio" is a loose funk jam with Watson's laidback vocal delivery- recorded in 1976. On "ET" Johnny says his baby is just like that alien freak! I doubt he means in looks cuz she's a "supernatural" chick. "Feel The Spirit Of My Guitar" is Johnny's muatation of the Peter Frampton track. My favorite is "Don't Be What UC", which has a groove similar to George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" (and especially Snoop Dogg's "What's My Name?"). Here Johnny's tell y'all to stop trying to emulate folks and be yourself. There's also a track unreleased from the "Love Jones" sessions ("Before I Let You Go") and one recorded but unissued from 1994 ("Ain't Nodbody's Business"). But it's just icing on an already triple chocolate cake. The cover sticker says "You don't know *@#& until you've heard this funk!". Damn straight.

5 out of 5 stars Its got my vote ! ! ! .......2007-02-18

I listened to the segment about the Kashemere Stage Band on NPR and was definitely amazed...

Listening to many of their tracks if no one told you would you believe that this was... high school band club???
Think... band clubs - - you know really bad big band arrangements with drummers who hit the high hat on the one and three and sometimes knocking over the crash cymbal, the note flubbing brass section and the greasy haired music teacher with the horn rimmed glasses named Mr. So and So always sending you to the office for sleeping or making fake f*rting sounds in class to relieve the bordom - - But what a minute, this is the deep south, late 60's/early 70's... enter an inspired bandleader who played with the greats, got inspired by the new sounds (Otis Redding, JB, etc.) and had a dream and vision to unite these guys, create timeless music that people would be listening to down the line, give them something to work hard on and be proud of... and KICK BUTT - - first in BAND competitions around the world, but then in record stores and on the radio. Alas, Conrad Johnson did it... creating a band feared as an undefeatably tight funk unit... and with a rhythm section so strong, long after the group fell into obscurity, rap DJs were sampling it.

On this record you'll hear the sounds behind the story (*Somebody needs to make Kashmere's story into a movie - - talk about a man inpsiring young kids to do their best !!) - - Johnson not only took his guys into the studio but recorded just about every performance (and apparently put a lot of work into his charts too - - amazing, considering that now-a-days most band directors just order them over the net.) You'll also hear ample space for members going off, powerhouse originals, and tunes demonstrating inspiration - - and remarkable hipness in an age when music teachers were anything but! No wonder the band always took the prize wherever they competed... In addition, while the band may not have been as tight as the JBs (hey they were just kids), trust me... they could have opened up for him and NO one would have complained...

As a sidenote, if you dig KASHMERE, check out the VOICES OF EAST HARLEM... a group with a similarly inspiring as well as funky story... and the PROPOSITION'S AFRICANA, another youth group of the era who were insanely bumping.

All in all rare funk... and a window into the long lost time and sound. Like the song says... they were SUPER BAD !

4 out of 5 stars Groove on!.......2007-01-05

Heard about this band on NPR and had to buy the CD! This album is awesome and it is remarkable that high school aged musicians worked at this caliber; what an incredible teacher they had to inspire them! Really good grooves, excellent music to clean house to, or to listen to at a party. You can't sit still while this CD plays!

5 out of 5 stars Texas Thunder Soul .......2006-11-11

I read about this recording in a review in the Wall Street Journal and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. End to end this recording is phenomenal. You would not know that these are high school students with the level of musicianship demonstrated on tracks such as Boss City, SuperBad (would make James Brown proud), Headwiggle, and $$ Kash Register $$. It is definitely a musical delight!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!.......2006-11-10

This is the best CD I have bought in a long time. If you love funky 70's tunes, especially if they sound like something from a Starsky and Hutch car chase scene, then this is the CD for you. These kids had talent!

5 out of 5 stars The Brothers Brought the Funk&Nothing but the funk.......2006-10-25

This is by far the best and most comprehensive introduction to recorded blues ever assembled, drawing styles, record labels, and eras together with the efficiency of a spider's web. These five discs--tied to the hit-and-miss PBS film series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues--embrace field hollers, early queens Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, the music's first composer W.C. Handy, Delta slide guitarists, string bands, piano barrelhousers, jazz geniuses Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, Texas hotshots, lyric poets Percy Mayfield and Willie Dixon, Chicago powerhouses from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf and howling white boys, soulkittens Etta James and Janis Joplin, juke joint brawlers like Hound Dog Taylor, African torchbearer Ali Farka Toure, modern guitar heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison, and even recent hit-makers Peggy Scott-Adams and Susan Tedeschi. And that's just a smidgen of the talents represented across more than 100 cuts. Nonetheless, there are grave omissions in disc five, which focuses on contemporary blues. The raw electric sound of present-day Mississippi, embodied by R.L. Burnside and other artists on the Fat Possum label, has done much to open the ears of college-age audiences and should be included. Also absent are the music's most important contemporary innovators: Afro-blues fusionist Corey Harris, psychedelic folk bluesman Otis Taylor and rap-blues proselytizer Chris Thomas King. Still, it's obvious this collection is a work of devotion and intelligence as well as commerce. --Ted Drozdowski

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Synopsis of the Blues.......2007-03-18

This collection is an excellent synopsis of the Blues from its earliest roots on the rercording medium to modern times. It also shows how far and wide this genre covers in the musical landscape with its influence on rock-and-roll and jazz. Besides having over 115 songs, there is also a companion booklet that documents every track. I really recommend this collection to anyone not familiar with the Blues, because it can be a great starting point for you to expand on an area you find more interesting, like the Kansas City blues in the 30s, Chicago blues in the 50s, or diverse individuals such as Lead Belly, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, John Jee Hooker, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

5 out of 5 stars Best blues compilation.......2006-07-13

IMO, this 5-disc set is par none the best blues compilation spanning over 50 years. Not everything noteworthy has been included, but it is the best bang for your buck you're going to find anywhere for a wide blues selection from early to recent, and Marty Scorese did a fantastic job in selection. I have given it as a gift several times and it is the gift that keeps on giving. Some very great tunes.

4 out of 5 stars Raw.......2006-06-19

This box set compliments the film series very well. Musically, the set is wonderful until the middle half of the fourth disc and wans quite considerably on the fifth disc. This is not only a matter of bad taste in choosing appropriate music for these parts of the set, it is merely a matter of musical history: the blues at the time in which these portions of the set cover was simple not very good music.
These portions would have been much better off if they included work by the likes of Carey Bell or RL Burnside instead of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Cock Rocker of Blues, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation on Blues Ever Made.......2006-06-03

One day in early 1968 I bought the album Wheels of Fire by Cream. Cream of course featured Eric Clapton.
I put on the live disc and listened to a song called "Crossroads" and became hooked.
At that time I didnt have a clue who Robert Johnson was or what blues was.
I over the years listened to blues through "White" artists like Eric Clapton, The Allman Bros and others.
One day I broke down and bought a Robert Johnson album and a whole new world was opened up to me.
I had no idea what "Mississippi Delta" blues was compared to "Chicago Blues" etc. For years I have listened to these recordings and was never able to hear the originals.
People like Eric Clapton have changed the arrangements on many of these songs to suit their styles. Now through this recording I am finally able to hear what the song was originally like. I personally love the slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta. I love the "rawness" of those recordings. I am also able to hear the electric side that came from Chicago as blues players migrated there. This Cd has the finest songs by the best blues artists ever.
This set includes Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson, Skip James, BB King, Buddy Guy, Maceo Merriweather, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Son House and the list just goes on and on.
It also includes the "White" side of the blues including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Bonnie Raitt and many others.
This is a celebration of the blues, and is a must for any collector, or fan of the blues. This CD is for people like me who have listened to the blues for so many years and now want to listen to the real thing.
You will never find a better collection in your lifetime....

5 out of 5 stars The best collection of blues I've ever heard. Period........2005-09-05

So much to love here--from fife and drum bands to rare acoustic blues recordings, to citified modern-day blues artists. These discs teach you a lot, but never come across as preachy or academic. When you hear Percy Mayfield or Guitar Slim you just want to turn the volume way up.

Over the 1952-82 time-span covered here, Bobby "Blue" Bland united tough-as-pavement blues singing with heartbroken Southern R&B, and helped to create chitlin-circuit soul as we know it now. Too raw for most oldies radio, Bland was a major presence in his time: 30 of these 50 songs hit the pop charts, and almost all of them were significant R&B hits. The first disc-and-a-half documents his long-running Duke Records collaboration (in Chicago, Texas, and Nashville) with trumpeter Joe Scott, who wrote ambitious arrangements that ran from tender love-man pop to howling, honking blues terrorism, but usually gave Bland a chance to emote harder than his microphone could handle. The remainder finds Little Boy Blue on his own in L.A. in the '70s, spicing up smoother blues-inflected soul (and even a stab at light disco, "It Ain't the Real Thing") with the famous squall in his voice. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Bland Anthology.......2007-02-24

How many artists have been covered by the Grateful Dead ("One More Saturday Night"), been sampled by Jay-Z ("Ain't No Love In the Heart of the City"), and played with B.B. King in concert? Just one: Bobby "Blue" Bland. Man, this guy is amazing. I religiously listen to the blues show on my local jazz radio station every weekend, but besides one live Albert Collins CD, some John Lee Hooker, and some Howlin' Wolf, I've almost never actually gone out and bought something I heard on that show. But when I heard Bobby's "Goin' Down Slow," I was transfixed. I had already arrived home in my Jeep, but I sat there through the five minute song, in awe, and I couldn't stop thinking how this was something that Dylan or Jerry Garcia would just LOVE (and that was before I knew that "One More Saturday Night" was actually a Bobby Bland cover!). Well, about half the stuff on this Anthology is equally good. Just listen to the sound sample for "Poverty," as well as the songs I've already mentioned. Check Bobby Bland out for yourself and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues Man.......2005-09-23

You can't think about downhome blues without thinking about Bobby Bland. Even though he has a more sophisticated style of singing the blues, his singing will put you in a bluesy mood.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2005-08-16

This cd is the best option for avid Bobby Bland fans. It has every song that you might possibly want and some you may have forgotten. For the price, its optimum.

5 out of 5 stars All that you need........2004-05-11

Bobby "Blue" Bland will give you all you need on this double cd. The obvious point being that Bland is one of the great blues/soul singers ever, but also, he always has great bands: Jabbo,(who also appears on many James Bown hits), the drummer on 'Lovelight', and others tracks, is probably the most amazing drummer to come out of the blues and soul field.

5 out of 5 stars No Ball & Chain Draggin' Down This Lady.......2007-05-31

When Janis Joplin electrified the folk/blues scene with her incredibly propelled version of Big Mama Thorton's "Ball & Chain," I really wanted to hear more from the source. Unfortunately it wasn't until recently that I listened to this CD that features "Ball & Chain." I was surprised at the high quality of the entire CD--and also a little surprised how "modern" Willie Mae "Big Mama" sounded on the CD. I don't know, I guess I was expecting more in the line of an anthology, archival performance in the way of Bessie Smith recordings (and I am serious Bessie Smith fan too.)

Willie Mae originated "Hound Dog" that was later such a hit for Elvis. Elvis' version is great, but I prefer the original.

Legendary Muddy Waters accompanies on five tunes.

As for "Ball & Chain," you can really hear the influence the original had on Janis Joplin--and how Janis also made it her own.

This is CD is hardcore blues delivered in Big Mama's light, almost delicate style.

No, there's nothing "almost" about it. Big Mama Thorton's blues phraseology is both strong & unequivocally delicate.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thorton is one of the blues Greats, sharing the galaxy with other blues/jazz devas like Billie Holiday & Etta James.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Traditional Blues .......2007-01-11

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was much more than the originator of "Hound Dog" - she was one of the greatest Blues singers. She could be fun and sassy, and could also be plaintive and emotional. After Bessie Smith and before Koko Taylor, there was Big Mama Thornton.

BALL `N' CHAIN consists of 16 songs recorded 1965-1968 (tracks 1-8 in 1965; 9-14 in 1966; 15 & 16 in 1968). Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 61:50. Booklet includes an essay by Chris Strachwitz, several black & white photos, and track information (songwriter credits, musician personnel, recording dates). Sound quality is good.

These are re-recordings of songs Thornton had previously recorded, including "Ball N' Chain", a song that was notably recorded by Janis Joplin. Tracks 1-8 feature Buddy Guy on Guitar. Tracks 9-14 recorded with Muddy Waters Blues Band (and also issued on Arhoolie's 2004 release "Big Mama Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band - 1966"). Noteworthy are Thornton's complaints on "Unlucky Girl" about being followed by the FBI everywhere she goes.

This may be the Blues, but it is a joy to listen to. Thornton sings Blues ballads and fun up-tempo songs. I hesitate to call it "country Blues" because it just seems too sophisticated to be called that. Whatever it is, it's beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars How blue can she get?.......2006-11-27

Brilliant!
Big Mama's powerful vocal is accompanied by some really, REALLY, strong musical groups; including Muddy Waters' band on several classical interpretations ("I'm Feeling Alfight", "Sometimes I have a Heartache", "Black Rat"...).
My other favorites on this CD are, probably, "Unlucky girl" and "Little Red Rooster" (with Buddy Guy, Walter Horton and others) and, even more probably, the best of them all, erotically highly charged "School Boy" (with only instrument being the sugestive and even eerie guitar of Fred McDowell)...
Some songs ("Swing it on home"...) unfortunately cross the line of R/B and approach rock 'n' roll, but it is only minor problem on this brilliant CD... Every unce of blues this lady carries is worth hearing!

Great songwriter ("Sweet Little Angel"...) and great interpreter, Big Mama Thornton is one of the best blues musicians I've encountered so far...
Oh yes, what was the name of that movie star hip-shaking white boy who also tried to sing Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog"?

5 out of 5 stars The classic 1960's Arhoolie sessions!.......2004-05-09

Although these are not as powerful as her Peacock recordings of teh 50's, one should not overlook her Arhoolie sides fro mthe mid 60's(to late 60's). Ball b' Chail is a classic, as well as the Gospel tinged Wade In The Water and Sweet Little Angel(covered fro meveryone from BB King to Etta James). This is a powerfu lset of rockin' blues, and a couple of slower ones too ,but for the most part this is great jump blues and the msuic swings, stomps, and jumps, as well as rocks! Even the slower stuff rocks! Big Mama dodn't recrd too much that wasn't worth listening to ,and aside from her Peacock recordingd. these are her msot essential sides, and are a major highlight of a long lustrious career as a blues diva! Also Mama Thornton has influenced everyone from rock singer Janis Joplin to new blues diva Candye Kane. Thornton was a powerful singer, and this cd should not be overlooked, and should be essential to blues fans. Even myself, strictly a fan of rockabilly music, love all of Thornton's work from the 50's and 60s'.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent rockin' blues and rollicking r&b and jump blues.......2004-04-13

This cd features Mig mama Thornton hollerin' her way thru a versitile set of jump blues, slow drags, and rockin' blues. Although if you want to make a 1st purchase of Mama thornton start with Hound Dog-The Peackock Recording, as a 2nd purchase you can't go wrong with these somewhat later sessions. Lot's of fun, rough and roudy blues.

3 out of 5 stars Missing some of the essentials.......2007-05-13

Not a bad overview of Jimmie Vaughan's career, but there's some fluff included here. Obviously, it's easier for Sony Music to reissue the stuff already in its back catalog, and as a result some of Vaughan's best work was left out. Let's get to the fluff first: "Tuff Enuff" doesn't belong on this disc. Yes, it's a T-birds song, and yes, it was their hit record, but it was penned by Kim Wilson and it does little to showcase Vaughan's talent. There are dozens of better T-birds songs that are more representative of Vaughan's guitar style. ("Extra Jimmies" was a great choice, but it's almost negated by the thudding rock dumbness of "Tuff Enuff.")

"Six Strings Down" (the live version from the SRV tribute album) and "Cool Lookin' Woman" (from the "Tin Cup" soundtrack) are other nonessentials that don't rank among Vaughan's best recordings. But since they're already in the Sony/Epic catalog, the compilation producer (Bob Irwin) threw them in as leftovers.

The meat of the collection comes from three albums produced by Nile Rodgers: "Family Style," "Strange Pleasure," and "Out There." The seven tracks from these albums, spanning eight years, show the impressive range of Vaughan's guitar playing, and also his dramatic improvement as a singer. An outtake or two from these sessions would have been the ultimate coup; alas, no dice. Then again, Producer Bob was smart enough to include "Dengue Woman Blues" (from the "Dusk Till Dawn" soundtrack), which might be the best slow blues that Vaughan ever recorded.

The one previously unreleased track is "I Like It Like That," from a 1998 Austin City Limits show. It's an interesting change of pace to hear Vaughan trying to sing in a more extroverted R&B style, but it's not particularly memorable.

And now for the missing essentials: Vaughan's notable appearances as a session guitarist. He's recorded with a long list of great musicians -- James Cotton, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Duke Robillard, Lou Ann Barton, et al. Surely, Bob, ya could've convinced Sony to shell out for just one of these collaborations, couldn't you have? Not even James Cotton's "Straighten Up Baby"? (Bob Irwin is in fact a smart dude in the music industry, but he didn't do his homework on this one.) Is it possible to dish out a so-called "essential" scoop of Vaughan without the extra jimmies?

4 out of 5 stars Essential if you love blues guitar!!.......2006-08-19

This CD showcases the best of Jimmie Vaughn's talent and beautiful tone. I was never a big fan of the Fabulous Thunderbirds but Vaughn's solo work is excellent. Clean, clear concise and from the heart blues.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Job of Gathering Stray Tracks.......2004-01-26

Jimmie Vaughan was one of the founding members of the blues/rock band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. And while this collection kicks of with a couple of T-Bird tracks (the instrumental blues shuffle "Extra Jimmies" and their breakout hit "Tuff Enuff"), the focus is on Vaughan's solo career, which has seen the release of only three albums in the past 14 years since leaving the T-Birds.

There are a couple of tracks ("DFW," "Good Texan") from FAMILY STYLE recorded with his younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1990. Following Stevie's death it would be four years before Jimmie released his first solo album, STRANGE PLEASURE. This is perhaps Jimmie's strongest album to date. The four tracks from this album (5-8) all written or co-written by Jimmie wouldn't have been out of place on his recordings with the T-Birds. The biggest stylistic change on these tracks is the addition of Bill Willis's Hammond B-3, replacing Kim Wilson's harmonica, giving the recordings a more soulful quality. Tracks 12-14 are from Jimmie's 1998 follow-up OUT THERE. The closing track, "Dirty Girl," is the only song from his most recent album, 2001's DO YOU GET THE BLUES. [Recorded on the Artemis label after Jimmie left Epic.]

Rounding out the album is Jimmie's contribution to the 1996 tribute album to his brother, "Six Strings Down," a couple of soundtrack songs, "Dengue Woman Blues" (from DUSK TILL DAWN) and "Cool Lookin' Woman" (from TIN CUP), and perhaps the standout track is the previously unreleased live version of "I Like It Like That" from an appearance on Live On Austin City Limits. [Note: The CD booklet gives a songwriting credit to Chris Kenner. This is a mistake. Kenner DID write a song by that title, but THIS is the song written by The "5" Royales guitarist Lowman Pauling--in fact, Jimmie introduces the song crediting Pauling!]

While on the surface, it seems odd to compile a collection like this for an artist with so few solo albums to draw from, it's nice to have these songs all in one place. [Total running time - 71:55) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars Quite outstanding!.......2003-10-27

I consider Jimmie Vaughan a living legend. Not only did he teach kid-brother Stevie Ray how to play the guitar but he co-founded a group that helped bring blues-rock back to prominence, the Fabulous Thunderbirds. He's played with all the legends and even shared the stage with Jimi Hendrix!
This CD is really very good. Featuring a couple of songs with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, a couple with Stevie Ray, songs from his own albums and a smoking previously-unreleased-live "I Like It Like That," this CD OOZES blues guitar licks and cool Texas vibe that only Jimmie can deliver. His "less is more" guitar style is VERY cool and his voice is easy to listen to. The songs are mostly upbeat and danceable with one slow blues cut "Dengue Woman Blues" that drips with Texas cool!
I only gave this CD 4 stars out of spite...that "Brothers," the guitar "conversation" with Stevie Ray off of the "Family Style" Cd wasn't included. I thought it appropriate for sentimental reasons only. I would LOVE to hear more unreleased early Jimmie/Fabulous Thunderbirds material too!

5 out of 5 stars one cool texan!!!.......2003-10-08

this cd will be in the cd player for sometime to come. this cd could have easily have been a 2 disc set worth of material. the remastering job here is very nice, and the tracks just smoke with bite and plenty of soul. the live version of "she likes it like that" is worth the price alone. do yourself a favor and pick this one up!!

Bobby Bland's uptown, brass-and-strings-drenched blues kept him on the charts long after gut-bucket kings such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters had dropped from black-radio airwaves. The artistic successes chronicled on this second volume of his greatest hits shouldn't come as a surprise, then, despite the frequent input of ultracommercial producer Steve Barri, who'd crafted AM hits for acts as diverse as the Grass Roots and the post-Motown Four Tops. Even with some accommodations to trends (the disco beat of "The Soul of a Man," chicken-scratching guitars here, there, and everywhere), Bland kept on being Bland, cutting country songs ("Today I Started Loving You Again") and blues standards ("Goin' Down Slow") and investing Dan Penn's "I Hate You" with a unique pungency. This disc performs a valuable service in lifting the veil from an often-overlooked period in the career of one of American music's most important interpretive singers. --Rickey Wright
