Unlike many men, Alligator Records never forgets an anniversary. "The country's largest contemporary blues label," as it rightly bills itself, has released multidisc compilations celebrating its 20th, 25th, 30th, and now 35th years. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, only tracks recorded for an artist's first Alligator disc are chosen for this chronologically presented summary of music that stretches from Hound Dog Taylor's electrifying 1971 label debut to Mavis Staples's in 2004. Although the imprint made a tentative stab at reggae in the mid '80s, its roster generally upholds the "genuine houserocking music" credo Alligator has boasted as a tagline since the early days. Whether reviving the careers of blues rockers (Johnny Winter, Roy Buchanan, Lonnie Mack, Elvin Bishop) or ageing icons with plenty of gas left in their tanks (Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Katie Webster, Mavis Staples, James Cotton, Guitar Shorty) or finding new blood to carry on the traditions (Michael Burks, Corey Harris, Dave Hole, Tinsley Ellis, Shemekia Copeland), Alligator sets the standard for what an independent label can achieve. These 35 nuggets extracted from a catalog of 225 albums only begin to tell the label's story, but there's not a weak one in the lot. Founder Bruce Iglauer's intriguing and insightful liner notes for each act add depth to the tunes, making 35x35 a representative sampler that's also an exhilarating listening experience, and a fascinating overview of American roots music. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
35 X 35 is not just another best-of compilation. Alligator founder and president Bruce Iglauer and staff chose to spotlight songs from the Alligator debut release from each featured artist. From "She's Gone" (the very first track on the very first Alligator album, 1971's Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers) to the legendary Mavis Staples' chilling "A Dying Man's Plea," 35 X 35 is effectively a chronological history of Alligator, a story told in music highlighting every style of blues and roots music the company has released. From the searing hard blues of Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, Albert Collins, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy to harmonica-driven workouts from Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite and William Clarke to the Gulf Coast piano blues of Professor Longhair, Katie Webster and Marcia Ball to the acoustic music of Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women and Corey Harris, it is clear that Alligator Records has been, and will remain, at the forefront of modern blues music in all of its many shades. With personal notes on each track from Iglauer in the accompanying 40-page booklet, 35 X 35 is proof of the staunchly independent label's single-minded vision for all these years: to record nothing but deeply rooted "Genuine Houserockin' Music."Customer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Guitar lovers will flip over this reissue's new bonus tracks: a conversation in which Stevie Ray Vaughan extols the virtues of Jimi Hendrix's playing and then essays them all in a medley of "Little Wing/Third Stone From the Sun." There's also the brief slide-guitar instrumental "Slip Slidin' Slim." What's breathtaking about these and the 10 remastered cuts that were the original 1985 album are the remarkably live amplifier tones. It sounds as though Vaughan's plugged directly into your stereo--especially at the climax of "Little Wing," where his Stratocaster feeds back through a wall of spinning Leslie speakers in a fit of psychedelic bliss. Otherwise, this CD still seems like a creative holding pattern for Vaughan, despite the addition of keyboardist Reese Wynans to broaden his band's palette. Nonetheless, the prophetic "Change It," which foreshadowed Vaughan's recovery from addiction by a year, and his in-concert staples "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up on Love" and "Life Without You" debut here. --Ted DrozdowskiAmazon.com
This 1985 release, Vaughan's third, marks a fittingly impressive close to his classic period. Reese Wynans' keyboards give Vaughan's sound added depth and pushes the music in a more polished direction, one with stronger elements of jazz and soul. Vaughan's serrated guitar work is stunning as usual, boasting expressive bends, passionate flurries, and pained wails. As on the first two albums, Vaughan opens with a furious instrumental, the groovy "Say What!" "Lookin' Out the Window" has an R&B style and the superb "Gone Home" settles into a mellow jazz mood. The uptempo "Look at Little Sister" and the super-slow "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up on Love" display Vaughan's mastery of straightforward Texas blues. Vaughan also works up Earl King's "Come On" and shows sensitivity on the ballad "Life Without You." -- Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
Absolutely Classic Vaughan Record.......2007-04-06
Some of his most popular, most treasured cuts are on this record. His theme song "Say What," "Look At Little Sister," "Change It," and "I Ain't Gonne Give Up On Love" are now part of the modern blues firmament. This release doesn't have the jazz riffs of Couldn't Stand The Weather, but it more than stands up on its own.

Its got my vote ! ! ! .......2007-02-18
Listening to many of their tracks if no one told you would you believe that this was... high school band club???
Think... band clubs - - you know really bad big band arrangements with drummers who hit the high hat on the one and three and sometimes knocking over the crash cymbal, the note flubbing brass section and the greasy haired music teacher with the horn rimmed glasses named Mr. So and So always sending you to the office for sleeping or making fake f*rting sounds in class to relieve the bordom - - But what a minute, this is the deep south, late 60's/early 70's... enter an inspired bandleader who played with the greats, got inspired by the new sounds (Otis Redding, JB, etc.) and had a dream and vision to unite these guys, create timeless music that people would be listening to down the line, give them something to work hard on and be proud of... and KICK BUTT - - first in BAND competitions around the world, but then in record stores and on the radio. Alas, Conrad Johnson did it... creating a band feared as an undefeatably tight funk unit... and with a rhythm section so strong, long after the group fell into obscurity, rap DJs were sampling it.
On this record you'll hear the sounds behind the story (*Somebody needs to make Kashmere's story into a movie - - talk about a man inpsiring young kids to do their best !!) - - Johnson not only took his guys into the studio but recorded just about every performance (and apparently put a lot of work into his charts too - - amazing, considering that now-a-days most band directors just order them over the net.) You'll also hear ample space for members going off, powerhouse originals, and tunes demonstrating inspiration - - and remarkable hipness in an age when music teachers were anything but! No wonder the band always took the prize wherever they competed... In addition, while the band may not have been as tight as the JBs (hey they were just kids), trust me... they could have opened up for him and NO one would have complained...
As a sidenote, if you dig KASHMERE, check out the VOICES OF EAST HARLEM... a group with a similarly inspiring as well as funky story... and the PROPOSITION'S AFRICANA, another youth group of the era who were insanely bumping.
All in all rare funk... and a window into the long lost time and sound. Like the song says... they were SUPER BAD !
Groove on!.......2007-01-05

This is by far the best and most comprehensive introduction to recorded blues ever assembled, drawing styles, record labels, and eras together with the efficiency of a spider's web. These five discs--tied to the hit-and-miss PBS film series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues--embrace field hollers, early queens Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, the music's first composer W.C. Handy, Delta slide guitarists, string bands, piano barrelhousers, jazz geniuses Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, Texas hotshots, lyric poets Percy Mayfield and Willie Dixon, Chicago powerhouses from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf and howling white boys, soulkittens Etta James and Janis Joplin, juke joint brawlers like Hound Dog Taylor, African torchbearer Ali Farka Toure, modern guitar heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison, and even recent hit-makers Peggy Scott-Adams and Susan Tedeschi. And that's just a smidgen of the talents represented across more than 100 cuts. Nonetheless, there are grave omissions in disc five, which focuses on contemporary blues. The raw electric sound of present-day Mississippi, embodied by R.L. Burnside and other artists on the Fat Possum label, has done much to open the ears of college-age audiences and should be included. Also absent are the music's most important contemporary innovators: Afro-blues fusionist Corey Harris, psychedelic folk bluesman Otis Taylor and rap-blues proselytizer Chris Thomas King. Still, it's obvious this collection is a work of devotion and intelligence as well as commerce. --Ted DrozdowskiAlbum Description

The Best Compilation on Blues Ever Made.......2006-06-03
I put on the live disc and listened to a song called "Crossroads" and became hooked.
At that time I didnt have a clue who Robert Johnson was or what blues was.
I over the years listened to blues through "White" artists like Eric Clapton, The Allman Bros and others.
One day I broke down and bought a Robert Johnson album and a whole new world was opened up to me.
I had no idea what "Mississippi Delta" blues was compared to "Chicago Blues" etc. For years I have listened to these recordings and was never able to hear the originals.
People like Eric Clapton have changed the arrangements on many of these songs to suit their styles. Now through this recording I am finally able to hear what the song was originally like. I personally love the slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta. I love the "rawness" of those recordings. I am also able to hear the electric side that came from Chicago as blues players migrated there. This Cd has the finest songs by the best blues artists ever.
This set includes Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson, Skip James, BB King, Buddy Guy, Maceo Merriweather, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Son House and the list just goes on and on.
It also includes the "White" side of the blues including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Bonnie Raitt and many others.
This is a celebration of the blues, and is a must for any collector, or fan of the blues. This CD is for people like me who have listened to the blues for so many years and now want to listen to the real thing.
You will never find a better collection in your lifetime....

Over the 1952-82 time-span covered here, Bobby "Blue" Bland united tough-as-pavement blues singing with heartbroken Southern R&B, and helped to create chitlin-circuit soul as we know it now. Too raw for most oldies radio, Bland was a major presence in his time: 30 of these 50 songs hit the pop charts, and almost all of them were significant R&B hits. The first disc-and-a-half documents his long-running Duke Records collaboration (in Chicago, Texas, and Nashville) with trumpeter Joe Scott, who wrote ambitious arrangements that ran from tender love-man pop to howling, honking blues terrorism, but usually gave Bland a chance to emote harder than his microphone could handle. The remainder finds Little Boy Blue on his own in L.A. in the '70s, spicing up smoother blues-inflected soul (and even a stab at light disco, "It Ain't the Real Thing") with the famous squall in his voice. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

No Ball & Chain Draggin' Down This Lady.......2007-05-31
Willie Mae originated "Hound Dog" that was later such a hit for Elvis. Elvis' version is great, but I prefer the original.
Legendary Muddy Waters accompanies on five tunes.
As for "Ball & Chain," you can really hear the influence the original had on Janis Joplin--and how Janis also made it her own.
This is CD is hardcore blues delivered in Big Mama's light, almost delicate style.
No, there's nothing "almost" about it. Big Mama Thorton's blues phraseology is both strong & unequivocally delicate.
Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thorton is one of the blues Greats, sharing the galaxy with other blues/jazz devas like Billie Holiday & Etta James.

Best of Traditional Blues .......2007-01-11
BALL `N' CHAIN consists of 16 songs recorded 1965-1968 (tracks 1-8 in 1965; 9-14 in 1966; 15 & 16 in 1968). Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 61:50. Booklet includes an essay by Chris Strachwitz, several black & white photos, and track information (songwriter credits, musician personnel, recording dates). Sound quality is good.
These are re-recordings of songs Thornton had previously recorded, including "Ball N' Chain", a song that was notably recorded by Janis Joplin. Tracks 1-8 feature Buddy Guy on Guitar. Tracks 9-14 recorded with Muddy Waters Blues Band (and also issued on Arhoolie's 2004 release "Big Mama Thornton with the Muddy Waters Blues Band - 1966"). Noteworthy are Thornton's complaints on "Unlucky Girl" about being followed by the FBI everywhere she goes.
This may be the Blues, but it is a joy to listen to. Thornton sings Blues ballads and fun up-tempo songs. I hesitate to call it "country Blues" because it just seems too sophisticated to be called that. Whatever it is, it's beautiful.
How blue can she get?.......2006-11-27
Big Mama's powerful vocal is accompanied by some really, REALLY, strong musical groups; including Muddy Waters' band on several classical interpretations ("I'm Feeling Alfight", "Sometimes I have a Heartache", "Black Rat"...).
My other favorites on this CD are, probably, "Unlucky girl" and "Little Red Rooster" (with Buddy Guy, Walter Horton and others) and, even more probably, the best of them all, erotically highly charged "School Boy" (with only instrument being the sugestive and even eerie guitar of Fred McDowell)...
Some songs ("Swing it on home"...) unfortunately cross the line of R/B and approach rock 'n' roll, but it is only minor problem on this brilliant CD... Every unce of blues this lady carries is worth hearing!
Great songwriter ("Sweet Little Angel"...) and great interpreter, Big Mama Thornton is one of the best blues musicians I've encountered so far...
Oh yes, what was the name of that movie star hip-shaking white boy who also tried to sing Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog"?

Missing some of the essentials.......2007-05-13
"Six Strings Down" (the live version from the SRV tribute album) and "Cool Lookin' Woman" (from the "Tin Cup" soundtrack) are other nonessentials that don't rank among Vaughan's best recordings. But since they're already in the Sony/Epic catalog, the compilation producer (Bob Irwin) threw them in as leftovers.
The meat of the collection comes from three albums produced by Nile Rodgers: "Family Style," "Strange Pleasure," and "Out There." The seven tracks from these albums, spanning eight years, show the impressive range of Vaughan's guitar playing, and also his dramatic improvement as a singer. An outtake or two from these sessions would have been the ultimate coup; alas, no dice. Then again, Producer Bob was smart enough to include "Dengue Woman Blues" (from the "Dusk Till Dawn" soundtrack), which might be the best slow blues that Vaughan ever recorded.
The one previously unreleased track is "I Like It Like That," from a 1998 Austin City Limits show. It's an interesting change of pace to hear Vaughan trying to sing in a more extroverted R&B style, but it's not particularly memorable.
And now for the missing essentials: Vaughan's notable appearances as a session guitarist. He's recorded with a long list of great musicians -- James Cotton, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Duke Robillard, Lou Ann Barton, et al. Surely, Bob, ya could've convinced Sony to shell out for just one of these collaborations, couldn't you have? Not even James Cotton's "Straighten Up Baby"? (Bob Irwin is in fact a smart dude in the music industry, but he didn't do his homework on this one.) Is it possible to dish out a so-called "essential" scoop of Vaughan without the extra jimmies?
Essential if you love blues guitar!!.......2006-08-19
Nice Job of Gathering Stray Tracks.......2004-01-26
There are a couple of tracks ("DFW," "Good Texan") from FAMILY STYLE recorded with his younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1990. Following Stevie's death it would be four years before Jimmie released his first solo album, STRANGE PLEASURE. This is perhaps Jimmie's strongest album to date. The four tracks from this album (5-8) all written or co-written by Jimmie wouldn't have been out of place on his recordings with the T-Birds. The biggest stylistic change on these tracks is the addition of Bill Willis's Hammond B-3, replacing Kim Wilson's harmonica, giving the recordings a more soulful quality. Tracks 12-14 are from Jimmie's 1998 follow-up OUT THERE. The closing track, "Dirty Girl," is the only song from his most recent album, 2001's DO YOU GET THE BLUES. [Recorded on the Artemis label after Jimmie left Epic.]
Rounding out the album is Jimmie's contribution to the 1996 tribute album to his brother, "Six Strings Down," a couple of soundtrack songs, "Dengue Woman Blues" (from DUSK TILL DAWN) and "Cool Lookin' Woman" (from TIN CUP), and perhaps the standout track is the previously unreleased live version of "I Like It Like That" from an appearance on Live On Austin City Limits. [Note: The CD booklet gives a songwriting credit to Chris Kenner. This is a mistake. Kenner DID write a song by that title, but THIS is the song written by The "5" Royales guitarist Lowman Pauling--in fact, Jimmie introduces the song crediting Pauling!]
While on the surface, it seems odd to compile a collection like this for an artist with so few solo albums to draw from, it's nice to have these songs all in one place. [Total running time - 71:55) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Quite outstanding!.......2003-10-27
This CD is really very good. Featuring a couple of songs with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, a couple with Stevie Ray, songs from his own albums and a smoking previously-unreleased-live "I Like It Like That," this CD OOZES blues guitar licks and cool Texas vibe that only Jimmie can deliver. His "less is more" guitar style is VERY cool and his voice is easy to listen to. The songs are mostly upbeat and danceable with one slow blues cut "Dengue Woman Blues" that drips with Texas cool!
I only gave this CD 4 stars out of spite...that "Brothers," the guitar "conversation" with Stevie Ray off of the "Family Style" Cd wasn't included. I thought it appropriate for sentimental reasons only. I would LOVE to hear more unreleased early Jimmie/Fabulous Thunderbirds material too!

Bobby Bland's uptown, brass-and-strings-drenched blues kept him on the charts long after gut-bucket kings such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters had dropped from black-radio airwaves. The artistic successes chronicled on this second volume of his greatest hits shouldn't come as a surprise, then, despite the frequent input of ultracommercial producer Steve Barri, who'd crafted AM hits for acts as diverse as the Grass Roots and the post-Motown Four Tops. Even with some accommodations to trends (the disco beat of "The Soul of a Man," chicken-scratching guitars here, there, and everywhere), Bland kept on being Bland, cutting country songs ("Today I Started Loving You Again") and blues standards ("Goin' Down Slow") and investing Dan Penn's "I Hate You" with a unique pungency. This disc performs a valuable service in lifting the veil from an often-overlooked period in the career of one of American music's most important interpretive singers. --Rickey WrightMusic Album:
