El Vira, Bobbie Sue...One of country music's greatest bands.......2007-04-29
Oak Ridge Boys made country music into almost pop music sense. Yes, they hit the pop chart so many times, EL VIRA reached no.5 and another classic BOBBIE SUE reached pop chart, too. Both songs are pure country music classics, and with Alabama's some classic hits - LOVE IN THE FIRST DEGREE, MOUNTAIN MUSIC - regarded by many country music fans as some of the greatest country hits of all time.
After all these years, Oak Ridge Boys still remain active band. It's amazing, and young generations of country music fans and musicians respect Oak Ridge Boys legacy very much. I respect them, too. Their music and lyrics always dealing with hope and love. Their now legendary hits still played many country music radio stations. That's a real influence, I guess.
This Gold cd is a must own collection for every country music fans. But, if you're not a country music fans, don't worry. Oak Ridge Boys music is everyone's music. Country fans, pop fans, everybody loves and sing their songs, I promise. Just listen EL VIRA and BOBBIE SUE first then listen all other tracks, you'll have one of the joyful hour in your life. Thanks for reading.
2 chunks of COAL in this otherwise GOLD collection.......2007-04-21
If they were going to do this, the Oaks backup with George Jones on
"Still The Same Ol' Me (loving the same sweet you)" would have been a better pick. Even the Oaks backing Paul Simon on "Slip Slid'n Away" would have been better than the B.M. track. Otherwise, great collection!
I did like the fact that they included "Family Reunion". This was right before they went country and were still gospel. It fits right in though since it's not exactly a gospel song.

The Original Oak Ridge Boys at Their Very Best!.......2004-07-26
The group had been known as the Oak Ridge Boys for a relatively short period of time when these songs were released. Smitty Gatlin purchased the name "Oak Ridge Quartet" from the legendary Wally Fowler in the late 1950's, then changed it to reflect the new lineup. As fans of Southern Gospel know, Willie Wynn was one of the industry's leading tenor singers, and the late Herman Harper went on to create the premier talent management agency that still bears his name. Incidentally, contemporary Oaks fans may be interested to know that this project marked William Lee Golden's debut with the group, resulting in one of the longest tenures in either gospel or country music.
This CD contains positively stellar material from some of the greatest writers in southern gospel -- Dottie Rambo, Gov. Jimmie Davis, and Smitty Gatlin himself, performing his very own "When I Lay My Burdens Down Someday". This one is solid gold. Don't miss it!

MCA gets cheap?.......2002-04-28
This collection would not be quite to bad if MCA hadn't released "The Oak Ridge Boys COLLECTION" nearly 10 years earlier. At least that package got original artwork and liner notes. When it became inevitable that the Oaks needed a Millenium Collection, what did MCA do? They simply pulled the 1992 "Collection" off the market (which had been certified Gold not too long before), slapped an old album photo on it (the original cover for "American Made," to be exact), and ever so slightly edited the track list. The result: a POOR excuse for a new release. All but one of the songs on this release appeared on the '92 collection ("Bobbie Sue," conspicuously absent from the prior release, and "Make My Life With You" are the only additions). Amazing, two of the Oaks' biggest hits, "Y'all Come Back Saloon" and "Thank God For Kids" were cut altogether (I guess to save even more money).
Even the liner notes are nearly identical to the '92 release. I see no reason for this total lack of concern for a top-notch group such as the Oaks. Since they have so many more hits, perhaps MCA will consider doing a Volume Two Millenium release (with a NEW cover photo and DIFFERENT song line-up!!)

Oak Ridge Boys Greatest Hits Vol 1.......2006-02-26
If you like the Boys...you'll love any of their albums
A selection of my fave 'before-I-was-cool' music.......2004-06-26
Anyhoo, as the years went on and adolescence set in I found myself drifting away from these masters of airy gospel-pop-country and on to the not-quite-as-lame realm of light-to-medium-pop-rock with a smattering of new wave. Which I drifted away from a few years later and started embracing the realm of classic & modern hard rock and metal, with a bit of rap thrown in for good measure. But then came the day just recently when I got the hankerin' to take my ear to stuff I haven't listened to in years... no matter how hokey or corny it was. That's when I barged into the 'rents' pad, raided their CD collection, threw this particular disc into my player, fired 'er up, sat back and marveled at what I considered good music before I attained some semblance of good taste. How I managed to sit through this playlist of down-home happy-go-lucky love ballads, quasi-gospel blues, and almost rock-and-roll-sounding pop-flavored country-&-western without hitting the 'skip track' button, I'll never know. On the upside, I did have the pleasure of re-experiencing 'Leaving Louisiana...', the one Oak Ridge Boys track I still kinda like, without havin' to re-experience `American Made' or `Elvira', thank goodness. Sadly, that bass-man solo tune I was dyin' to hear again ain't on this collection. `Course, seein' as how my impression of this cut's singer hasn't improved all that much in the intervening years, it's no big loss...

The Oak Ridge Boys-Greatest Hits, Vol. 1.......2004-04-18
Their traditional country period.......2003-09-27
When released on vinyl, this collection contained the greatest hits that the Oaks had achieved up to that point. Two more volumes of greatest hits were to follow, providing proof of their popularity throughout the eighties. However, this was the one I always liked best because it is firmly rooted in traditional country. I enjoyed their later more pop-flavored music including their classic hits Elvira and Bobbie Sue, but the hits here, covering the period 1977 to 1980, were what really excited me.
The majority of the tracks here are upbeat songs to get up and dance to, including You're the one, Trying to love two women, Dream on, Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight (a song also recorded by Emmylou Harris), Come on in (recorded by Dave and Sugar as Baby take your coat off), Sail away and my favorite Oaks song, Y'all come back saloon.
There is one real tearjerker (I'll be true to you) that doesn't fit the mood of the rest of the album - it is about a woman who commits suicide - and two ballads, Crying again and Heart of mine.
So this collection only covers four years of the long career of the Oaks, but it is the four years I enjoy most. You can buy another compilation to listen to their later hits, but if you love traditional country, this is a must-have.
Great as always.......1999-06-11

Best Oaks CD in years........2007-02-27
The Boys have never sounded better and if you haven't listened to the Oaks in a while, this is a great way to get back in the fold.
THE OAK RIDGE BOYS:STILL ROCKIN' AFTER ALL THIS TIME....IT SHOWS ON "FRONT ROW SEATS"!!!!!.......2006-10-21
1.) "Hard To Be Cool (In A Mini-Van)"-The project's opener, sung by Oaks' Tenor, Joe Bonsall, is a fun, up-tempo song, with humerous lyrics, and ad-libbing from Bonsall, towards the end of the song. This is the first single from the new CD. I like it. The harmonies are really showcased, here. The only thing I would've enjoyed more, is if Richard Sterban, had added some "Bass Licks" during the chorus. Other than that, it is an enjoyable sing-along song.....TWO THUMBS UP!!!!!
2.) "Heaven's A Smaill Town"-Oaks' Baritone William Lee Golden, takes the lead vocal, here. He sings it with such emotion, and power. With the other Oaks' voices blending right in, makes for an ORB Classic, for sure. Right on, Guys!!!!!
3.) "Dream On Me"- One of a few to feature the lead voice of Duane Allen, it is one that you'll find yourself going back, and listening to, again, and again. Duane Allen, always seems to find the perfect song for The Oaks. This is an example of the many perfect songs, that The Oaks put their hearts, and souls, into. You can hear the powerful harmonies throughout the song. My favorite track, indeed. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!
4.) "Smailer"- Another Joe Bonsall lead, this is one of the project's slow ballads. Reminds me of another Joe Bonsall lead, "Don't Turn Around", from 1987's "Heartbeat" album. A serious look at the world around us, in smaller form. Touching, indeed.
5.) "Something In The Water"- A fun, up-tempo song, with a bluegrass feel, this song has William Lee Golden, singing at his best, yet. Don't believe me??? Take a listen for yourself. The Oaks have a blast with this one. COOL SONG!!!!!!!
6.) "Jonah, Job, & Moses"- Another Duane Allen lead, this is a beautiful ballad, that tells the story of three of the most heroic men of Bible times. It is a "tear-jerker".....Have a box of kleenex on hand. You're gonna need it. The Oaks' emotions pour out, DEEPLY. Very, very moving.
7.) "Crazy Not To"- Another fun William Lee Golden lead. One word, WOW!!!!!!!! Just listen!!!!!!
8.) "A Feeling Like That"- One of the projects more-serious tracks, it has Bass Singer, Richard Sterban, singing his VERY BEST, YET. Take A Listen, and you'll hear why!! The Oaks have a monster-hit on their hands, here. Nicely done!!!!!!
9.) "Heaven On Earth"- Another Joe Bonsall Lead, this song talks about a man's affections of the woman he loves. Only one way to describe it......HOT!!!!!!!
10.) "Closer To Home"- Duane Allen, taking the lead, once again. A powerful look at the many people in our lives who've been our heroes, that we find all around us. One of the projects' best cuts, for sure!!!!
11.) "Didn't It Rain", A Fun, up-tempo song, about "Noah's Ark", and the GREAT FLOOD. Sung by William Lee Golden, it is sure to be an ORB Gospel Classic!!!!
12.) "Compared To You"- Good Song, and power harmonies. One of Joe Bonsall's Best leads, EVER!!!!!!
13.) "Until You Get There"- Duane Allen Has Done IT, AGAIN!! Enough said.
14.) "Did I Make A Difference?"- We all wonder in this day, and time, whether, or not, we've made a difference in the world we live in. Duane Allen's lead, and The Oaks on the chorus bring this new project to a close. I couldn't thing of a better way to end this new collection of music by the 2004 CCMA Mainstream Artists Of The Year, The Oak Ridge Boys. They have DONE IT, YET AGAIN. This song proves just that!! 5 STARS!!!!!!!
In Conclusion, "Front Row Seats", is probably the best ORB Recording to date. Co-produced by the production team of Duane Allen, & Michael Sykes, it is sure to be a "Must-Have" for any ORB Fan. All 14 songs, are destined to be ORB Classics. Nice Project, with the best VOCAL GROUP IN THE WORLD, singing their hearts out for their many fans. I'd recoomend this CD to anyone who has not yet heard the Oak Ridge Boys sing. You are sure to become a fan, once you hear it. Amazing job, Guys!!!!!! You've outdone yourselves, THIS TIME!!!! GREAT WORK!!!!!!!!!!
Oaks' New CD: Front Row Entertainment.......2006-10-09
It is hard to be cool when your locks are grey and you look like Kenny Chesney's grandfather. Though tanked at the bottom of the barometer of "cool," this has not perennially stopped the Oaks from releasing songs that could give the Chesneys, Straits and Jacksons a run for their monies. Discounting the hip factor, this new release continues to usher some front-row material rich in melodic flare and affecting in its ability to stir the heart. This is because these paeans are red-carpeted by the who's who among the songwriters of country music including Paul Overstreet, Ron Harbin, Rob Crosby, Billy Yates, Steve Dorff, just to name drop a few. However, unlike their previous bluegrass detour "Journeys," "Front Row Seats" finds them back on the contemporary country route with an understated yet complimentary backing maneuvered with lots of fiddles, steel and slide guitars. Vocally, with their four-part harmony still in galore, they are still singing as if they were one voice with multi-dimensions of soul and heart.
Of the tracks that are a little on the less predictable side is the lead single "It's Hard to Be Cool (In a Minivan)." A light weighted popish ditty, "It's Hard to be Cool" tells of a guy's struggles in trying to impress a girl in a red corvette when he is driving a minivan with a baby sit. Though witty and realistic, it is somewhat hard imaging these aging dudes singing such a song pertinent with an adolescent tenor. Much more appropriate for the Oaks, given their soul-trenched Christian faith is "Jonah, Job and Moses." Utilizing the Biblical stories of these thee patriarchs of the Christian faith, this inspirational ballad calls for perseverance at hard times. Also serving as chicken soup for the soul is the Rob Crosby and Al Anderson slowie "Did I Make a Difference." Presenting a montage of stories of self- sacrifice, this heart-render luxuriates in some beautiful piano playing and soul-edifying steel guitars. Serving as pinch to workaholics is the acerbic "Smaller"--a sobering ballad that advocates the prioritization of the transcendent ingredients of life deserves repeated listens.
Of the tracks that deal with proverbial issues of relationships, Bobby Tomberlin and Steve Dorff's "A Feeling Like That" is a standout. A breathtaking ballad that revels in the simplicity of love brings out a sentimental and glowing tepidness from the Oaks. While the the gospel-tingled love song "Until You Get There" lives up to the lofty standards set by its co-writer, the ever-reliable Paul Overstreet (who penned Blake Shelton's "Some Beach"). Also notable is Richie McDonald's (of Lonestar) who co-writes the complaisant "Crazy Not To" boasting some excellent guitar riffs.
Over the years, the Oaks have made some stellar records. However ever since the 90s, their albums have been hits and misses. Nevertheless, "Front Row Seats" is a welcomed return to form. Not given to moment of snooze, the well-chosen songs from some of Music Row's finest writers coupled with the Oaks keening delivery, this effort ranks as one of the boys' best endeavors since their sublime "The Long Haul" CD. With an album this good, even if the hip factor may be illusionary, their front row seats will never be empty.
The Boys are THE BEST!!!.......2006-10-02
Although I LOVE each & every song on this cd, I have to admit that "Dream On Me" has become my #1 favorite. It has a great, driving beat to it & the rhythm of the words being sung (& lyrics themselves) gets stuck in my head. I have hit the "repeat" button quite often, on this song. The 1st radio single "Hard To Be Cool (In A Minivan)," "Heaven's A Small Town," "Heaven On Earth," & "Closer To Home" are all tied for 2nd with me... But I really do LOVE each & every song on this cd. They are all awesome (great songs with great lyrics)!
I'd have to say that this cd is the best yet. The Boys just keep getting better & better!

Just when you thought the Oak Ridge Boys were all out of acorns, something whimsical and significant this way comes. These long standing kings of main street country have wrapped up a great little package of holiday merry making that will draw chuckles and occasionally dampen eyes. The title track explains why one guy savors his wife's Christmas cookies all year long (a fattening recipe for a happy marriage, in other words), and "Uncle Luther Make the Stuffin'" is a good old novelty tune about the family gathered a little too comofrtably for the holiday. Of course they flirt with the maudlin on a few tracks (how can you not at this most sentimental time of the year?). But even those tracks--especially "Ordinary Days" that sounds like a well crafted Jimmy Buffet tune written for a movie version for "Tuesdays with Morrie"--sound right at home next to the Christmas classics like "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Jingle Bells," played here in hoedown time with dobros, guitars and fiddles a-blazing. In the familiar harmonies of the four Ridges, this album will be a welcome addition in their fans' collection. For everyone else, it will come as a mild and satisfying revelation. --Martin KellerAlbum Description

"Elvira" not the only reason to buy!!!.......2002-04-28
This album was unique from the beginning in my opinion. "Elvira" was recorded at the end of 1980, the first cut for the album (in fact, the album had not even completed production when the single was released, thus no album credits were given on the original 45). The album was released just as the song began crossing over from the country to the pop charts, which gave it nearly instant platinum status. You would think that the title of the album would be "Elvira." WRONG. The Boys, knowing that people would already know the album for "Elvira," cleverly titled it by their SECOND single release, "I'm Settin' Fancy Free." This gave the follow-up more attention upon release.
As far as songs go, this album has it all. From the landmark crossover smash to the genuinely-country "Dream of Me," to the tear-jerking ballad "When Love Calls You," there's something here for everyone. There's even a high-energy gospel song included at the end (reinterating the fact that now matter how big they may become, the Oaks will always be rooted in Gospel music).
Today, you can almost literally pick up any country compilation CD and find "Elvira" on it. This album is reason enough to go beyond the "oom papa mow mow"s and see what the Oaks are really about.
