Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

          Album Description

Paul Marshall, a former member of the Strawberry Alarm Clock and bass playing mainstay of the L.A. country music scene has crafted a collection of tunes that range from country (If I Had You) to western (Cowboy Jazz), and from rocking abandon (Work To Do) to the sensitive tribute to a family patriarch (Our Father). Backed by an outstanding group of musicians, this CD is imbued with a sense of honest, simple beauty that will make you feel good!

5 out of 5 stars For Country Lovers.......2003-11-24

From the nostalgic to the heartrending to the upbeat, it's all here! If you were in the club scene in the 70's and 80's--"The Blackboard in Bakersfield and the Palamino" will make you yearn for the "good ol' days". "Cowboy Jazz" has a smooth sound with a cute hook. I can't find one song on this album that I don't like and most I am crazy about!..Most will have you singing snippets for long after the music is off. If you like country even a little, you'll love the rich style and great vocals on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Weed and Water.......2003-02-08

One of the best things about being an editor-writer and getting to review music is the opportunity to sample releases that are keepers for collectors like me. When Paul Marshall sent me a copy of his new CD, I felt like I had a new painting to hang on the wall. This country singing and playing makes me take a fresh new look at the genre-these songs are good clean fun and respect. With some very skilled fieldhands behind him, his band knows just when to push hard and get the action stirring, as well as melt your heart with a lump of solid gold sincerity that carries calmness and assurance. I'm also going to credit Steve Pouliot with a fine job of handling the engineering board-sir, you have a fine touch and ear.

The great thing in Paul's songwriting is that he has an excellent feel for the range of styles in his playing, and the presentation covers rockabilly, ballads, Cajun kicking, slow romance, traditional Nashville twangin', and a trip back in time to the days of cowboy/girl duets like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. In a voice that is as smooth as chamois, Paul's vocals provide comfort and peace-and how great that is in times like these! However, he's got more than a fair share of Saturday evening fun to spread around, but it's the kind you could share with the whole family and feel proud to do so.

Just follow his bouncing bass and see which you prefer. In my case, I'm quick to jump on something with a slight jalepeno twist, and "Sifting Through the Ashes" gets my immediate interest. Talking about the aftermath of a love affair gone wrong (okay, that's always good for an idea in country circles), Rick Solem gets his piano right up front where it belongs and makes the keys jump like they were bare feet on a hot pavement, and you can't overlook the second verse's "Like Sherman's march when he torched Atlanta..." Whoa, lemme hear this one again, please! Just a hop and a jump away is the probable cause of that broken heart, as "Lucy Anna" flirts with a fiddle, accordion, and all the fellas down New Orleans way. Darlin', you've got the magic that turned my head, even if I cry all the way home back to Tennessee. But you know those country singers: there's always chores to be done, and "Work to Do" lets Billy Watts and Cary Park earn their pay on guitar as Shawn Nourse keeps the time clock on drums alongside Rick's rambling, cascading keyboard.

Okay, I've got to be more serious-country music always has that sober side, I've been told--and Paul starts off with "If I had You," which says it straight and true. The title song has an allegorical theme that is nurtured with care behind the sensible, honest vocal arrangement, and there's a faithful, loyal pedal steel in the background. With a twist on a title, "Cowboy Jazz" salutes images of the sunset, a warm pot of coffee, and the open range. If you need a slow dance with that special person nestled in your embrace, then set this on repeat play and give each other a hug when it's finished. You get another view of the scenery, but this time, it's from the audience who came for the music, the sportin' adventure of romance, and the bands at venues like "The Blackboard in Bakersfield and The Palomino." Considering the lineup that's saluted,

Buck and Merle and young Emmylou
Loretta and Kitty and Charlie Pride too
...Hank Thompson, Wynn Stewart and the Killer, Jerry Lee...

ya know, I've got to believe the man could have sold me a ticket, too.

The soul of this set is Paul's moving eulogy for a beloved parent (in this case, his father-in-law), and "Our Father" is a song worth sharing with anyone who wishes he or she could say how special that man was for raising a family to adulthood. Paul's strength is his gentleness and phrasing, and I'll guarantee this will be heard in all 50 states when that special, private ceremony comes due for reckoning. It's followed by "Going Places Together," which has a '50s "better days" sense of nostalgia. Aw, go on and admit you thought it's a pretty song, and there's every reason to say so, especially with Teresa James's picture-perfect backup vocals. Three-for-three: "Truth is You Lied" is another slow one, but when the man knows what works, you have to smile and sigh with respect. There's a grand slam home run pitch waiting, as "Stay Little Longer" finishes the set with another picture for the mantelpiece and those warm memories.

Hey, after having the time to listen to this yet one more time again, I think I'm getting to like this country stuff. Maybe all I needed was someone like Paul Marshall to be a guide, because these songs sound better with each spin. I may not go out and buy a Stetson and I've already found I can't handle wearing the boots, but I'm willing to keep trying. As long as there's a man like this making country music, I just might kick in for some of those names he mentioned...'cause they surely helped give Paul his style. And thankful am I for it too.
