Amazon.com essential recording
Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27
Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).
Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27
I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.
Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11
Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.
American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04
If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.
With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.
The best of Copland.......2007-01-09
For the Aaron Copland fan, this CD has the essentials: the most popular and easy listening of the Copland body of creations. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Astounding "Canyon"; "Rodeo" Rivals NYP.......2007-01-05
Close your eyes and be transported to the Canyon. In this remastering of a 1960 recording, Morton Gould shows his chops as a superlative conductor and interpreter of this Grofe classic. The work itself is wonderful, but Gould and his orchestra provide nuances that absolutely delight. Of the five movements of "Grand Canyon Suite", the final, "Cloudburst", ceases becoming music and is elevated to pure sensory experience. It is no longer notes on a page finely executed; it IS the sky, the wind, the sheets of rain (a sheer, shimmering slide of sound), the thunder, and it is perfect. The four prior movements are nearly as excellent, with the second, "Painted Desert", casting an eerie shadow over the listener's mind with spellbinding brush strokes. This is a performance delivered with painstaking care.
Gould's treatment of Copland's works, recorded three years earlier, were of great personal interest, as one of my earliest exposures to "serious" music was the great Bernstein recording of "Rodeo", and "Buckaroo Holiday" in particular. Surprisingly, Gould and company give the NYPO a run for its money. They are just as energized, brash and even raw (hear the horns, and it's fitting) as New York; ditto the "Gun Battle" episode of "Billy". Gould threw himself into Copland's scores and whipped his musicians into a frenzy when called for, and the results place Gould's readings of these two pieces of Americana right behind Bernstein.
This CD - beautifully remastered - is a bargain.
Superb recordings of American classics........2004-04-27
I thoroughly agree with all other reviewers (though I wish some would spell Copland's name right!) Morton Gould conducts with great verve and sensitivity. "Rodeo" is terrific and it also includes the seldom heard "Honky-Tonk Interlude" which is a delight in itself.
The Grand Canyon Suite is a highlight with its marvellous orchestration and melodic richness. Although the score is influenced by a number of composers such as Dukas, Ravel, Respighi and even Richard Strauss, it nevertheless feels entirely
original. "On the trail" is beautifully rhythmical, one can really feel the trotting
of the donkeys, and the sound effects are pure joy. Note the
ee-ah-ing of the donkeys, so superbly part of the music. (somewhat reminescent of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream overture.) The Cloudburst is a sonic triumph.
This recording comes from 1957, but digitally remastered. Sound is demonstration quality. Still probably the best available, highly recommended.
Copland and Gould - LSC-2195.......2004-02-12
I've heard Copland conducting these two works on recordings and I've heard the famous NYPO/Bernstein's 1960 recording of these two works on Columbia Records, yet Gould and his Orchestra fills in the blank spaces that was left out in previous and recent recordings.
He takes his troup to NYC to Manhatten Center, in Oct of 1957, and have the legendary RCA producer, John Pfeiffer and Lewis Layton, produce and engineer this recording session to be encaptured on 3-track tape (where the "Billy the Kid" was released on RCA "New Orthophonic tape recording" - the BCS-130), then to eventual vinyl (LM/LSC-2195). Gould, being somewhat of an arrangement conductor in the 50's, manage to pull the stops out in how these two Copland pieces are to be presented-to where the listener can feel that they themselves are back in the Wild, Wild West of the 1880's. He doesn't rush through these two pieces like some other conductors do. Gould takes his time trying to tell the story within the music. He uses emphasis, emotion, tempo and dynamics where it should be per each chapter in a story. Excellent listening for all!
This BMG "Living Stereo" release of the LSC-2195 Copland/Gould is a faithful reproduction as it can be of the original vinyl release.
Gould conducts Copland and Grofe.......2003-11-21
It may surprise some to discover that American composer/conductor Morton Gould conducted such fine performances of other American composers' music. These RCA Victor "Living Stereo" recordings are vivid, excellent proof that Gould was a really fine conductor and not just of his own music.
The performances of the suites from Copland's ballets "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo" are among the best ever recorded. They benefit not only from Gould's wonderful sensitivity and appreciation but from excellent playing by the "pickup" orchestra and the still remarkable "Living Stereo" recording process, in which RCA used only three microphones and advanced mastering techniques.
Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" was a "labor of love" as the skilled composer/arranger spent considerable time carefully depicting his impressions of one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Grofe had been a very successful arranger for Paul Whiteman and is still remembered for the very first orchestration of George Gershwin's "An American in Paris," premiered by Gershwin at the piano with Whiteman conducting in New York's Aeolian Hall in February 1924.
Grofe composed a number of original orchestral works in later years and the "Grand Canyon Suite" is probably his best. It contains memorable melodies and is skillfully orchestrated throughout. It so impressed Arturo Toscanini that he recorded it in 1945 for RCA Victor, under the supervision of the composer. Grofe himself conducted a recording of the suite for Everest Records in 1960. Gould's recording is excellent. The final movement, depicting a spectacular thunderstorm, is absolutely awesome. I think this recording may surpass an earlier favorite, also recorded for RCA Victor, by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston "Pops" Orchestra.
This is all very fun and very exciting American music.
Superlative performance of Copeland.......1999-12-26
Billy the Kid & Rodeo were both etched in my soul when as a young boy I listened along with my mother. This performance by Morton Gould remains for me above any other that I have heard and I have heard many given my love for them. This is a re-issue of an original 3 microphone/3 track TRUE stero recording made by RCA in their 'Living Stero' series and originally recorded in 1957. A must have for Copeland listeners. It is a bonus that it also contains 'Grand Canyon Suite.'

My all time favorite CD.......2004-01-11
Perfect. The best performance of the best music.
Beautiful!!.......2001-11-10
This album is an absolute joy to experience! The recording proves to all who may doubt, that brass quintet is a medium capable of musical miracles! The pieces here are taken from the orchestral repetoire and have been arranged for five brass voices. Trumpeter Rolf Smedvig and his ensemble perform in a manner that is always immaculate, tasteful and above all, musical. The precision of the enemble playing here is in a word, astonishing. On track #1, 'Procession of the Nobles', for example, there is a moment where the 2nd trumpet begins an ascending line that is overtaken and completed by the 1st trumpet. The transition is so liquid and seemless that the casual listener will not even be aware that the line wasn't played by one person! Tubist Samuel Pilafian offers a lovely arrangement of Copland's 'Simple Gifts' that shows off a wide range of sound from soft and sweet to bold and grand. Another favorite is the joyous 'Slavonic Dance No. 8' with its rollicking, sunny feel and inspiring dynamic contrast. Brass enthusiasts, purchase this recording with confidence! It is amazing!

Bernstein, Four Copland Ballets: SACD multichannel / stereo.......2003-09-06
Here we have the reissued classic Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recordings of four primary Copland ballets: Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, Rodeo (dances sequence), and Billy the Kid. Even in comparison with the composer's own recorded performances, these readings stand out, a bit above. The sheer wide-open-prairie sound that SACD multichannel now allows ... now how did those old CBS stereo master tapes become multi? who knows?... in any case the surround sound now achieves new vividness, and a kind of "you are there" accuracy of tonal presence, whether the orchestra is temporarily engaging in play among one or more reduced, chamber-sized groups, or gathered up in typical Copland massed effects. All of these ballets are given completely superlative readings by Bernstein and company, here. But this new SACD mastering/pressing allows the greatness to come through more completely than ever before. As if Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, and Rodeo were not enough: the recording of Billy the Kid tops it all. Even though this is the earliest recording, made in 1959, it was done in Boston's Symphony Hall. Although the differences in acoustic are subtle, if you listen closely among the changing tracks, you will hear the extra clarity and musical power of the Boston hall, long and deservedly renowned for its own special greatness of sound. In sum, you can buy this SACD for the sheer authenticity of the performances; or you can use it to test drive your multichannel system. In the latter case, you will be evaluating more than glitzy or floor-shaking sound effects, in favor of hearing just how much sheer music your rig can produce. The best of both worlds ... I am listening on five full-range speakers ... leaves a listener breathless with amazement. Billy the Kid is almost fifty years old, and sounds the best of the lot! Who can bear the agony of waiting to hear what contemporary BMG might be able to do with those equally famous Reiner/Chicago Symphony master tapes, also recorded in the pace-setting days of early stereo recording? Get this SACD disc, now. Forget movies for a while. Use your ears for fun, while you still have them. Highly recommended, for performance. Highly recommended for sound, especially in multichannel playback.

The year 2000 marks the centenary for Aaron Copland, and what better conductor to bring his best-loved Americana compositions into the next millennium than Michael Tilson Thomas? On his follow-up to 1996's Copland: The Modernist disc, the forward-thinking conductor leads the San Francisco Symphony through Billy the Kid, Appalachian Spring, and Rodeo--three well-worn compositions steeped in Americana and virtually owned by Leonard Bernstein on a now legendary single disc. But Tilson Thomas doesn't try to compete with Bernstein, instead giving these works an inventive, impressionistic reading all his own. He adds a noirish color to the introduction of Billy the Kid, a perfect contrast to the work's folksier elements. On the opening of Appalachian Spring, Tilson Thomas's unhurried timings create a sense of suspense (not bad for a work we've all heard dozens of times!). And, thanks to great recording techniques by RCA Victor, Rodeo is a rollicking good time that you'll want to crank up on the stereo. Sure, we've all heard these pieces before, but Tilson Thomas makes them sound fresh again. Great stuff. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Great Performance.......2007-01-24
This is a superb recording. The music making is exciting and inspired. Thomas has insight into how this music is to be played, and he gets a wonderful, enthusiastic, splashy reading of it from the S.F. Symphony that brings out the joy, the nuance, the breadth and the full texture of Copland's splendid writing. It's a great CD and simply the best rendition of these American masterpieces that I've ever heard.
Copland the great American composer.......2007-01-05
An excellent performance of a series of Aaron Copland's most famous works. I was most interested in Copland's work with Martha Graham, and this recording aided my class presentation on their joint endeavors.
Three Aaron Copland Works: The New Gold Standard Recording.......2006-06-17
Aaron Copland is a composer who seems to flow in and out of favor with the critics but remains in the bloodstream of American audiences. This recording by Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony offers three of Copland's most familiar masterpieces in performances that truly underline the genius that was Aaron Copland. Given that many conductors, not the least of which includes Leonard Bernstein, Thomas Schippers, and Marin Alsop, have given superb performances of each of these ballets, it may sound presumptuous to claim that this Tilson Thomas recording is the Gold Standard. But just listen to the energy of performances and the quality of interpretation and recording and see if you're not hearing these pieces anew.
MTT draws exceptionally fine playing from his SFO and his tutelage with Leonard Bernstein is apparent. But MTT has extensively studied these scores and has his own opinions - opinions that make the works each more solid and sound. 'Billy the Kid' has all the combination of menace and danger of the tale but also manages to bounce into wildly exuberant dancing. The four episodes from 'Rodeo' are full of fire and vixen and celebration and elegant writing. But for this listener the finest achievement is in MTT's choice of recording the full ballet 'Appalachian Spring' and not for the original 'chamber (read 'pit') orchestra', but instead for the full orchestral version that allows more color, more sensitivity in sparring orchestral choirs, and in more radiant innocence and beauty of tone. This is a stunning achievement and one by which all other performances and recordings must be judged.
For those whose library already holds individual recordings of these Copland works, this triad is a must. For those who have liked but have never taken Copland seriously, the experience of these performances will alter the appreciation of Aaron Copland as one of the populist masters of the last century. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, June 06
Copland Concert.......2005-11-02
Featured on this CD is the entire Appalachian Spring ballet, Billy the Kid ballet suite, and four dance episodes from the Rodeo ballet. All are masterpieces presented with an entirely new interpretation by Michael Tilson Thomas.
With Billy the Kid, Aaron Copland's future is written for him, a composer whose music evokes rural Americana. The opening introduction where he depicts "The Open Prairie", his sound is born, large spacings of octaves, fifths, and fourths give an expansive panoramic feeling. The other parts of the suite are represented: "Street in a Frontier Town", "Mexican Dance and Finale", "Prairie Night" (Card Game at Night), "Gun Battle", "Celebration" (after Billy's capture), "Billy's Death", and ending with "The Open Prairie". All are depicted with soaring strings, chatty woodwinds, blazing brass, and a battery of percussion. Appalachian Spring is a pioneer celebration around a newly built farmhouse and a young couple about to tie the knot. Of course, the famous Shaker Tune is in this, but split up by a dance sequence, and the entire work ends rather peacefully. Sounds of his opera "The Heartland" can be heard here, as well as Copland's great driving rhythms. The Rodeo dance episodes include Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and the famous Hoedown. Copland's great writing of melodies (all catchy), interesting harmonies and orchestrations, and those fabulous driving rhythms are the apex of his American sound, all played in Rodeo within a relatively short amount of time.
All the music is played excellently by the San Francisco Symphony. Michael Tilson Thomas gives a cerebral and intelligent interpretation, but never gives way to sentimentality or overt drama. I think that is all that is missing from these works is a little extra drama. This makes Leonard Bernstein's version of all the suites a slightly better buy. That and Billy the Kid and Appalachian Spring are on only one track (30 minute works). Not a bad CD by any accounts, it is easy to recommend after the Bernstein.
Copland Reigns Supreme Under Thomas' Baton.......2004-12-15
Whenever I see "The Magnificent Seven", "On the Waterfront", "The Natural", even "Waiting for Guffman" or any number of films that use music to reflect some aspect of the American experience, I think of Aaron Copland. He didn't compose any of those scores, but his musical influence is so pervasive in our collective consciousness that one can only describe the music as "Coplandesque". Aptly entitled "The Populist", this superb disc was recorded in December 1999 and presents Copland's three classic folk ballets: "Billy the Kid" (1938), "Rodeo" (1942), and the complete version of "Appalachian Spring" (1944). Bernstein's version may have been the most definitive, but make room on your CD shelf for this one. With the masterful Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, it's sensational.
It opens with "Billy the Kid", here a 21-minute single movement suite that contains the dark coloring suitable for a killer in the Old West. The arrangement presents a haunting atmosphere amid a basically romantic theme with a strong sense of distance and open space as emphasized by the muted trumpet solo in the middle. This is followed by "Rodeo", a 19-minute piece in four movements, which presents a comparatively more wholesome story that is meant to inspire lively dancing with the "Saturday Night Waltz", an especially lovely "Corral Nocturne", and the boisterous "Hoe Down", among other folk-inspired material. Running 35 minutes in a single movement, the capper is the Revivalist episode of "Appalachian Spring" in its full orchestral scoring. Vividly played, poetically paced and stunningly recorded, it is as close to the definitive version as exists now given its full scope. Spread over a greater time span than condensed versions and interspersed with music of significant unease and conflict, the piece takes on a wider portrait of community struggle. In particular, the familiar Shaker melody "Simple Gifts" expands through a series of variations to make an epic statement complete with triumphant brass. Thomas takes his time in unfolding his Americana with all the skill of a great musical dramatist who knows exactly how to pace his story. No matter how many times you think you've heard all of these pieces, I can tell you this is one you will treasure.

The Music is Beautiful, but the Extras are Priceless.......2006-02-21
Michael Tilson Thomas has long been known to have had a happy and fruitful relationship with the great Aaron Copland. His intimate knowledge of Copland's music and heart are evident in these recordings. The second symphony and the Appalachian Ballet(! as opposed to suite, which leaves out a very gorgeous, mysterious movement) are gorgeously rendered, as is the inimitable Fanfare for the Common Man. Billy the Kid is always a delight, of course. The Orchestral Variations are so invigoratingly different from what most people think of when they think of Copland, and this rendering is lively and precise. If I had one complaint, and it is a small one, it would be that I had a hard time with this interpretation of Rodeo, which didn't seem to find it's rhythm and gallop the way I'm used to. Still good, but I've heard better.
But for me, an aspiring composer, the thing that puts this set over the top is the absolutely delightful commentary on the contents of the set by MTT. Not only do you get to hear a wonderful history lesson, but MTT obviously has a light, joyous love of music, and particularly that of Copland, that is infectious and inspiring. After hearing the commentary, I found myself much more deeply involved in the second listening of the set. I must disagree with the reviewer who compared MTT with Bernstein, not that one has more "quality" than the other, but that such a comparison has any merit or point in the first place. They are two very different people. MTT's commentary makes this set a must-have for Music lovers and especially for Copland aficionados.
It's not Bernstein and never will be.......2005-09-21
Tilson Thomas flirted briefly with trying to be the next Bernstein but luckily has gone his own way. He is not a fiery or driven conductor--one can't say of him that he is possessed by music, a phrase Bernstien used about himself. In these Copland recordings he certainly conducts well, but the spirit of Copland seems lost among the careful detailing. This should be simple music to conduct but somehow only Bernstein catches the rollicking joy, the democratic dance rhythms, and the underlying sophistication at the same time. These readings strike me as too sophisticated by half, although they are in great sound.
Aaron Copland: The Essence of America.......2003-06-23
Having heard MTT perform Copland live and with astounding impact I was delighted with this set. MTT's perfomances are exciting and have alot of insight. The 'Modernist' CD is perhaps a little dry compared with the 'Populist' one but the two compliment each other well as a result.
MTT's comments as an interpreter and friend of Copland are invaluable and provide an accurate and lively interpretation of the composer's music. He delivers his words with great enthusiasm and clarity and his 'scat' singing on the disk is not to be missed!..
All in all this is a great box set and every Copland fan/student should have it. I hope it's not too long before MTT releases a recording of the 3rd Symphony - if it turned out like this set then we would have another definitive Copland recording.
The two faces of Copland.......2001-10-29
This set contains 2 music CD's: One CD has Copland's earlier more chaotic works, and the other CD has the Copland's more famous works: Rodeo, Billy the Kid, and Appalacian Spring suites. The third CD is a commentary on the works on the other two disks, and also contains "Fanfare for the Common Man".
The Appalacian disk is the greatest of the set. All three works have a new fresh interpretation, and the Appalacian Spring suite includes a section that is usually cut in most performances. (When I first listened it definitely took me by surprise!) MTT is perhaps the greatest living conductor for modern music and he does not disappoint.
I did not care much for the CD containing Copland's modernistic works. The early works are very aggressive and "in-your-face" with irregular rhythms, which some may prefer, but they are a bit too modern for me.
The commentary disk is delivered in a somewhat dry manner, but is worth listening too for some insight about the music. The commenary for the Appalacian Suite (where he explains the restored "Preacher" section) is good, and it is necessary to listen to the commentary to even hope to understand the modern works. (Actually, it helped me to appreciate the "Orchestral Variations" on the first CD -- perhaps the only modernist work in this set that I really enjoy.)

Buckaroo Man.......2001-01-03
Dave Stamey tells wonderful stories through his "old school" out- west, cowboy songs. He's got alot of talent and a great voice! This is an up-beat, fun-to-listen to CD. His second CD, Tonapah, is also awesom.
A star rising from the west.......2000-12-21
If you like western music, you'll go nuts over this CD. Dave Stamey is a very good cowboy poet, a fine singer, and an excellent acoustic guitar player - backed by some very talented musicians. His work sounds like the best western music from the 1960's but is as current as the space station. His songs put you in the west he loves, and makes you taste the dust of a desert trail and feel the bone-weariness of a day spent riding the prairie. He even does an outstanding rendition of 'The Auctioneer' - no easy trick!
