André Previn has gathered an extremely distinguished group of chamber musicians to join him in these French pieces, which he obviously enjoys. The Milhaud, arranged by the composer for piano and string quartet, is the novelty here, played with such brio that one doesn't miss the original orchestra. The Poulenc and Saint-Saëns, both top-drawer entertainment pieces, are also very well played by all. The disc runs a bit under fifty minutes, but considering the number of people involved and the amount of rehearsal time it takes to get this level of performance, let's not complain for once. --Leslie Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars Um, hello?.......2003-05-06

This is one of my favorite Mozart discs of all time. The pieces will astonish you and the playing is superb. The artwork on this disc would make you think you were in for boring court music. In fact, these pieces are full of drama. The slow movement in K. 364 is worth the purchase price. Put this on the must list.

      Album Description

This new release celebrates the explosively visceral sound world of Stefan Wolpe (1902-1972). Regarded by specialists as among the elite of mid-century modernists, Wolpe's compositions of the 50's and 60's can be heard as developing in sound many of the ideas championed on canvas by New York's Abstract Expressionists.

This disc includes the premiere recordings of two late Wolpe scores - Quintet with Voice (1957) and Piece in 3 Parts for Piano and 16 Instruments (1961); as well as Wolpe's early Suite im Hexachord (1936.

Performed by Peter Serkin, Oliver Knussen, Jan Opalach, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Speculum Musicae.

Notes in Todd Taylor's "Taylor Made" album include Mark Twain's famous quote about the banjo...you know the one about breaking out your hide like the pin-feather pimples on a picked goose. Well, with this inspiration to set the stage, Todd Taylor does a mighty fine job invoking "the glory-beaming banjo!" on this all-instrumental effort. He has some innovative licks and demonstrates various techniques on the 5-string (Scruggs style, melodic, and single string). His repertoire pays tribute to the music of Earl Scruggs, Kenny Baker, Don Reno, Hugh Tomasson and even Led Zeppelin. At the same time, about half of the CD is made up of Taylor's originals, and one can see why he was nominated for a 2004 Grammy for "Blazin' Bluegrass Banjo." John McEuen wrote the liner notes for "Taylor Made."

On stage since age 6, Taylor performed with his twin brother (Allen) as the "Taylor Twins." They appeared with Bill Monroe, Carl Story, Roy Acuff and others. Todd lights a fire on his five-string, but one should look beyond just the breakneck licks. The musician finds his stylistic footing by expanding into non-bluegrass genres (Latin, new acoustic, western, and rock). While every banjo-player worth his salt cuts his teeth on far like Foggy Mountain Special, Dixie Breakdown, Washington County, Shuckin' the Corn, and John Hardy, the task at hand becomes one of incorporating innovative interpretive twists to make these recorded tunes your own. That's why Taylor's best material is built around his own originals (Jo Ban, Gold Tone Jubilee, Unleashed) or his renderings of "El Cumbanchero" or "Stairway to Heaven." Unfortunately, his 6-minute rendition of "Ghost Riders" gets a bit mundane and tedious, especially without lyrics included. After one round of banjo, dobro, and fiddle interplay, the song actually stops and starts again with another 3-minute round. Despite this reviewer's opinion, I'm told that the tune is getting rave reviews and airplay.

Taylor's arrangements tend to use the fade-out to end his songs. He does this to be different and so that his music can be used in major movies (ie. Roadkill). At times, Taylor's accompanists seem challenged to cleanly match his exceptional musicianship. I also felt that Todd's rhythm guitar sits a little too dominantly in the overall mix in places. Minimal album shortcomings aside, I was impressed with this young man's virtuosity and vitality. Accompanists include Bo Frazier (fiddle, mandolin), Mike Moody or Ken Parker (bass), and Steve Thorpe (dobro). Look for Todd Taylor and his Gold Tone. He shows us that he's a very daring young man with a lot of confidence and musical skill. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Playing Time - 35:38 -- Five-string bluegrass banjo is not an easy instrument to play. It requires plenty of intense right hand drive with various fingerpicked rolls, while the left hand uses such techniques as pull-offs, hammer-ons, and string bends to embellish melodies. The innovative Todd Taylor has it all down! Incorporating Scruggs, melodic, and single string styles, his repertoire pays tribute to Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, John McEuen and even Elton John. Pretty diverse influences, but not as far-reaching as on previous projects. Taylor penned two impressive originals, "3-FIVE-N" and "Bayou Bottle Blues," and he arranged a few others like the frenetic crowd-pleaser "Orange Blossom Special." One can see why Todd's been nominated for a number of Grammies. John McEuen once told me that he wants to take the banjo into new, uncharted territory, and Taylor demonstrates his comfort with John's "Miner's Night Out." A barn-burning rendition of "El Cumbanchero" also appeared previously on his "Taylor Made" album. Not sure why he includes it here again. "Prairie Song" and "Little Bessie" feature Steve Thorpe's languorous vocals.

On stage since age 6, Taylor and his twin brother (Allen) performed as the "Taylor Twins" with the likes of Bill Monroe, Carl Story, Roy Acuff and others. When Todd's five-string starts smoking, look beyond just the breakneck licks. He manages to find some stylistic footing by establishing a groove and expanding into non-bluegrass genres (Latin, new acoustic, and rock). While every banjo-player worth his salt cuts his teeth on fare like Reuben, Todd's spunk makes it his own. That's why Taylor's best material is built around his two originals or his renderings of "El Cumbanchero" or "Rocket Man."

The band on "3-FIVE-N" comes off with even more instrumental proficiency and a better rehearsed sound than on his "Taylor Made" album. Primary accompanists include Bo Frazier (fiddle), Lamont Goff (mandolin), Robert Feathers (guitar), and Mike Moody (bass). Nathan Thorpe, Steve Thorpe, and Chuck Embry III appear to a minimal degree. Todd shows us that he's a very daring young man with a lot of skill, confidence, and vitality. On first listen, what may sound to an undiscerning ear as rather frantic and frenzied picking is really occurring in a very controlled bluegrass environment. Dare I say it but on his next album I'd like to hear him slow down and offer a small percentage of very evocative mood pieces - a whole `nuther and calmer side of the banjer! I have had songs recorded by Mark Chestnutt, Engelbert Humperdinck, Gloria Gaynor, The Manhattans, etc.--well over 100 major and independent recordings as a songwriter. I have worked with some of the best in the industry! I am proud to say that I worked with Todd Taylor as producer of the project, "Fast Ride"!

Todd has gotta be the "world's greatest banjo player"! He is extraordinary! The artistry, his writing abilities, and his performances can not be matched by anyone!

Be sure to pick up not one, but a bunch of his albums! THIS IS AN ALBUM NOT TO MISS!

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome Stuff!.......2000-04-14

Fast Ride is one of the most awesome cd's I've ever heard. It features the most unique banjo playing possible with speed, accuracy, yet maintaining the smootheness only the best can do. Being a guitar player myself and involved with music most of my life it takes some special work and talent to please me, therefore I don't own a lot of cd's but this one is so great and so special I am proud to add it in the top of my collection. Not many banjo sounds are attractive to other styles of music like it is in country and bluegrass, but this one will hold the attention of just about anyone in any style music. It's the hottest banjo playing I've ever heard utilizing minors with swift movements that strikes the listening nerve beyond what we are used to hearing. I would honestly rate this one a 10 star but 5 is as high as we may go here. Hats off to Todd Taylor on this unique piece of work. I think this artist has reached the outer realm of banjo playing. If you never liked to listen to banjo playing this one will turn your head and change your thinking. Just Ain't none no better!

5 out of 5 stars Todd Taylor - Fast Ride.......2000-04-12

Fantastic, incredible, you've heard a picture is worth a thousand words, well I can truly say that this cd represents the sounds worth a thousand words and all of them positive. Being a guitar player myself and involved with music for most of my life I am very hard to please for my own personal listening pleasures. I don't own many cd's and only the best could even interest me and this one rates among the highest of my collection. This cd shows the vast accomplishments of banjo playing like you have never heard or imagined. My hat is off to Todd Taylor as his playing has reached the absolute outer realms of banjo artistry. He has brought this instrument into musical styles never heard before, from rock, to jazz, to blues, and even mixtures that one would not think appropriate for a banjo. This cd certainly without a doubt proves otherwise to me. Hearing is believing and the proof is in the pudding on this one. The entire cd reveals superb music that keeps you listening and your attention. It's more than entertaining, it's incredible to say the least. The balance of the entire instrumention is well engineered and of a full spectrum of sound without a boring spot anywhere and that is extremely difficult to do. I don't know if I have ever heard any artist that can hold you to every song throughout the entire album without being some boredom somewhere, but this really takes the cake. The selection of songs are great as well and this one is to keep. How many rock fans would ever think of listening to banjo music? They will this one and it deserves more credit than I know how to mention. It is an album I can listen to for many years and I don't think I would get tired of it. I highly reccomend this to anyone no mater what your type of music, you can't help but love it. Job well done Mr. Taylor. I would have to rate this cd as a 10 star but you only go as high as 5. Few artists can play with such speed and still maintain the smoothness and accuracy. I see a Chet Atkins here in the world of banjo playing. You will love this cd. I look forward to watching for more of the unique sounds and music of Todd Taylor.

Two words describe Todd Taylors new CD 'Blazin Bluegrass Banjo'. Those words are pure genius.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone in the field who is a more accurate, more talented, or more articulate banjo player. Todd's play is remarkable. He speaks directly to the listener with out the use of words. The pictures painted in your mind's eye, tell a story. A story of life, times shared and times remembered, and the music of those times.

His fingers never miss, and never is a word I seldom use. From the opening notes of 'Rawhide' you undergo a transformation from listener to participant. By the time you reach the halfway mark of this practical party on a disk, you are visibly smiling and tapping your foot along with the music. It's an uncontrollable, infectious reaction that even listeners who are not bluegrass fans, will be forced to succumb to. You finally realize that something special, if not truly amazing, is happening. It is a spectacle for your ears and for your mind.

This project is a exhilarating thrill ride masquerading as a musical endeavor. Any theme park in the world would pay handsomely to have the same effect on people as Todd has managed to do. His music is reminiscent of a time when musicians played genuine instruments and had undoubted talent.

There are fourteen tracks on this CD and each stands out. It is refreshing to have such a phenomenal, enchanting project come along, as well as remarkably rare. Having to pick the three top tracks on the CD, I would choose the dizzying and aptly named "The Race Is On", the youthful, sprightly "Linus and Lucy-The Snoopy Theme", (which will have you humming the tune until bedtime), and the amazing "Bluegrass Breakdown" which makes you wonder if Todd has extra fingers to pick with.

Todd Taylor hits one out of the park with 'Blazin Bluegrass Banjo'. Every person who loves music, authentic music with heart, should own this Cd.
