2 out of 5 stars Fair.......2007-01-01

When I got this on vinyl I was attracted to the cover. Back then when I would listen to his records I'd for some reason stare at the back cover. I thought it hysterical John standing with his friends, back to camera with this odd shirt yellow shirt that said "Kiss a beaver". Then I'd look at the front cover and wonder what he was thinking standing in such breath taking scenery. My two favorites are "Rocky Mountain High" which has remained my favorite and believe it or not, when I sang it in Keroke, EVERYONE sang with the chorus. This amazed me because I thought Denver wasn't for everyone. My second favorite is "Darcy Farrow". It's never stopped moving me and I taught myself how to play a rough version of it on my guitar. I'm sorry to say the other songs didn't do much for me. But I'm proud to say this album, fair though it is, was the start of my John Denver collection. In John's Wildlife Concert made two years before his passing he played "Rocky Mountain High" and "Darcy Farrow" in a slightly different way but the new versions didn't change my mind having those two as my favorites. Perhaps this album will start you on a Denver collection binge but hope you don't wear a shirt that says "Kiss a beaver" on the back. Wouldn't want anyone to get teeth marks on their kissers.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy.......2006-03-26

I always liked his music, but it seems a little off. I get the feeling that if you listen to too many Denver albums you end up joining a cult or living in a commune, talking about herbs and cycles of the moon.
I think they found a bunch of these records at Jonestown.

5 out of 5 stars Magical! Some of the best nature music ever made........2005-06-24

Having grown up in and around the Rocky Mountains, I can't imagine life without this album. It never fails to cast a spell on me every time I listen. John's music captures the thrill and wonder I feel when gazing on those magnificent frosted peaks. Of course, the title track has become a signature song for him, and this original recording has a magic that has never been equaled. JD recorded this song several times, but none of the later versions sound as good as this one. His exuberant cover of the Beatles tune' "Mother Nature's Son", surpasses the original by a mile. "Paradise" is a charming, bittersweet bluegrass tale of a favorite childhood getaway that was destroyed by a mining company. One of John's earliest compositions, "For Baby", is given a first-class treatment. "Darcy Farrow" is an old folk song about love in a Nevada frontier town, beautifully delivered in a style that evokes the old West.

Only one song seems a little out of place here, a driving acoustic rocker called "Prisoners", which is a political protest against the military draft. It's a great song with lots of energy and some really tight guitar work, but it doesn't seem to fit in with the whole celebration-of-nature theme. "Goodbye Again" is a performer's lament, balancing the claims of personal relationships against the need to share music with the world. The rest of the album is taken up with the now famous song cycle called "Seasons Suite". A more charming tribute to the changing seasons would be difficult to imagine. The thread of common experience is what makes these songs so appealing to all. No collection of acoustic music is complete without this one. You'll find it irresistable!

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Beautiful.......2004-06-30

Obviously a classic. Simply incredible songs of love, discovery, spirituality, emotion, hope, prayer, and release. I simply lose it every time I hear the title song; in my mind there are very few songs--in any genre--that pack the spiritual whallop, youthful environmental zest, and truthful observation that this song has. Listening to that song is like a prayer for me, and there is no doubt in my mind that John Denver was deeply divinely inspired when he wrote it. I don't get tired listening to it, I feel deeply rejuvenated and energized, full of life.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Paradise.......2004-04-20

This is perhaps John Denver's most well-known record, primarily because of the big single, "Rocky Mountain High." While I do love this song, I believe that several other songs on the album deserve just as much attention. "Paradise," is an old song penned by John Prine, that fits perfectly into John Denver's favorite song subject matter - growing up in the country and feeling regret for our past environmental mistakes. "Prisoners," is a simple, but intense song about loneliness that can be interpreted to fit the outlook of the individual listener. All three of these songs give me chills.

The beautiful thing about John Denver's most heartfelt songs (self-penned or not) is that each person hears something different and meaningful. This broad-based appeal to universal musical understanding is the mark of an artistic communicator. John Denver's body of work is certainly not above criticism, but he does deserve credit for carving out a very unique and valuable spot that no one else has been able to emulate.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2003-08-02

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

5 out of 5 stars Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars MY SWEET MUSIC.......2005-05-09

After I read one of the previous reviews, I felt I just HAD to
offer a review regarding this delightful CD! It is wonderful!
Of course it differs a bit from hearing John Denver himself, because this is a grand compilation of his music, performed quite well, using instruments only---guitars, dulcimers, and mandolins. In NO WAY does this CD detract from Mr. Denver's music. If anything, this version of his music is a unique, a sweet, and a very wonderful addition to have for any John Denver fan. ENJOY.

5 out of 5 stars JD Tribute Rocky Mountain High.......2004-05-19

Owned CD before, got stolen. Buying again. GREAT mondolin and banjo. Great CD. Cant wait to get it again.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet Lonesome.......1999-12-16

The review above seems to take for granted a prejudice against country people and bluegrass music--my question is: if you don't like sweet annd honest twang, what on earth are you doing buying a blugrass disc? Perhaps if the author had seen Matewan or Coal Miner's Daughter as well as Deliverance, the poignancy of true American folk music wouldn't have been lost on him or her.

I confess that I've always had a soft spot for John Denver despite his cheesy fan base (see above)--perhaps it has something to do with that Muppets Christmas album I still adore--and to be able to hear his sweet, simple tunes as rendered in banjo, dobro, lap steel, hammer dulcimer and such is truly a joy.

I recommend this disc to you if you're the sort of person who respects the twang and have ever (perhaps shamefacedly) enjoyed getting Annie's Song stuck in your head.

1 out of 5 stars Deliverance Meets Denver: A Bluegrass Butchering.......1999-06-22

I bought this CD thinking that it was one of the many releases of Mr. Denver's songs that popped up everywhere following his tragic death. I, like so many of my generation, can relate events and people we were with when we first heard a particular song of Mr. Denver's. His music moved us and touched our hearts. I am the first to admit that I should have read the description of the album before purchasing it. This is not an album by John Denver. It is an attempt to turn his songs into hillbilly, barn dancing, bluegrass. One does not truly know the meaning of pain until they have listened to Annie's Song: You Fill Up My Senses being played on a banjo like the theme song from the movie Deliverance. On the other hand, if you enjoy sitting back in a rocking chair with a jug of moonshine this album is right up your alley. Needless to say I was not only disappointed but horrified at the way Mr. Denver's music was butchered.

3 out of 5 stars The Sound Quality is Lacking!.......2000-02-02

Don't get me wrong, I love John Denver's music, but the sound quality of this CD was disappointing after having recently heard the "A Celebration of Life" CD. That CD, played on the same player as this one, had a richer and fuller sound, almost like he was right there in the room singing. Almost all of the familiar titles are there, along with some not as familiar. However, I can't imagine why Take Me Home, County Roads wasn't included on an album entitled "The Very Best of John Denver". I guess you get what you pay for.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-01-21

I was never an avid fan of John Denver but when he passed away, I began to remember how much his songs played a part of my youth. At first when I heard this CD I was disappointed they weren't the original recordings, but then almost immediately I began to hear how beautiful his voice was. These recordings are of all the favorites, even the ones you never knew you liked so much. They have new orchestration, much richer and fuller than the originals, and I can't help but think that this is the way he would have loved to have presented these songs if he had had the technology and money back then. He had a beautiful voice that did not diminish with age, as many other pop singers' did.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection from a prolific performer........1999-05-30

There are many John Denver collections, but this one happens to contain some of my all-time favorites, including the soaring "For You", and perennial favorite "Sunshine On My Shoulders". Listening to this CD brings back a very memorable open-air concert on a mountainside in Utah several years ago. I can't think of a better way to spend $6 than to buy this CD.

All John Denver and/or country music lovers look here!

Rocky Mountain Collection is an incredible collection of songs by John Denver. The songs chosen on this cd are incredible. It is my all-time favorite cd of anyone. If you are going to buy one John Denver cd please buy this one. It has his best and my favorite songs. Here are some of them.

Leaving on a jet plane; 1967; what a great start to this cd, his version of this song is simply the best.

Rhymes and Reasons; one of my favorite songs, beautifully written. "The children and the flowers are my sister and their brothes, their laughter and their loneliness could clear a cloudy day.

Take Me Home Country Roads; 1971; one of JD's best describing the beauty of West Virginia in this mellow country tune.

The Eagle and the Hawk; so uplifting, makes you feel like the eagle and hawk.

    Rocky Mountain High; 1972; speechless.

Annie's Song; is a beautiful song. "You fill up my senses like night in a forest, like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain."

And many, many, more. As I said before if your are going to get a JD cd, get this one, it has so many incredible songs.

5 out of 5 stars Crisp Mountain Air Songs.......2005-03-15

I consider myself a Colorado native even though I was born somewhere in the southwestern desert. But it wasn't until I was 25 years old that my "mountain girl" introduced me to Denver.

By this age, I was old enough to understand and appreciate John Denver. His music respects and gives thanks to America's wilderness in such pleasant ways, his voice is soothing to listen to, the music melodic and composed with a complexity I hadn't initially expected, and eventually this music became a constant in my life. To this day, he is the only musical artist who makes me feel there is a purpose in my life.

The Rocky Mountain Collection comprises some of his greatest material and is perfect for road trips into the mountains (rather than a pile of Denver discs strewn about). By far the best song is Rhymes & Reasons for personal reasons. But the entire album is wonderful.

For people who pay attention to versions: the Rocky Mountain High and Annie's Song tracks are older recordings, lacking a bit of Denver's late-era vitality, which can be found on the Macery release The Best of John Denver. This is a good thing as these two tracks fit in well with the album as a whole.

The very first night I arrived in Hermosa Beach, CA, I was driving around and cars with their windows rolled down thumped modern junk. So I rolled down all my windows and blasted I'd Rather Be A Cowboy! I came to LA seeking my fortune, but someday I will return to the mountains.

I'd rather live on the side of a mountain
Then wander through canyons of concrete and steel
I'd rather laugh with a ray of sunshine
Than lay down my sundown in some smoggy field

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Collection .......2004-10-04

John Denver's unique blend of pop, folk, and country was extremely popular in the early 70s. During that time, he had a plethora of hits and built a solid reputation as a singer-songwriter. His music was surprisingly varied, although most of it celebrated in a simple manner the great outdoors and a uncomplicated way of living. Although his time at the top was relatively brief, his music lives on in the form of several top-notch greatest hits collections.

"The Rocky Mountain Collection" is perhaps Denver's best 2-disk selection. Disk 1 starts with some beautiful pop-folk from his first records, which were not hits for Denver. Many of these early songs are extremely memorable, particularly "Follow Me." His career blossomed when Peter, Paul, and Mary took his "Leaving on a Jet Plane" to #1 for 1 week in 1969, and he started to have hits on his own.

The CD set includes all of his Top 20 pop singles: Take Me Home, Country Roads (#2 in 1971), Rocky Mountain High (#9 in 1973), Sunshine on My Shoulders (#1 for 1 week in 1974), Annie's Song (#1 for 2 weeks in 1974), Back Home Again (#5 in 1974), Sweet Surrender (#13 in 1975), Thank God I'm a Country Boy (#1 for 1 week in 1975), I'm Sorry (#1 for 1 week in 1975), Calypso (#2 for 4 weeks in 1975), and Fly Away (#13 in 1976).

Many of these singles were also Top 10 country songs; in fact, Back Home Again, Thank God I'm a Country Boy, and I'm Sorry went all the way to #1. Denver even won the 1975 Country Music Association Award for Entertainer of the Year. In addition, two of his later country hits are here: Some Days Are Diamonds (Some Days Are Stone) (#10 in 1981) and Wild Montana Skies (Duet with Emmylou Harris) (#14 in 1983).

Finally, a number of lesser hits sparkle on these CDs, such as Perhaps Love, a duet with Placido Domingo, that is quite lovely despite the potentially bizarre pairing. Overall, this collection is a top-notch compilation of Denver's best music. The liner notes are also excellent, incorporating writing and producing credits as well as date of recording. Tons of pictures are also here, and it's great seeing Denver enjoying the outdoors. Finally, an extensive biography of Denver reveals much information about him as an artist and person. A most highly recommended CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Mellow and Acoustic.......2006-01-20

John Denver's sixth album contained the song for which he is best known, the album's title song "Rocky Mountain High." This song went top 10 and secured John Denver a place as Colorado's musical hero, and became an unofficial anthem for the state.

John continued the largely acoustic musical style of his previous albums, using electronic effects and instruments sparingly to create a style of pop/country/folk that remains as unusual today as it was then. Acoustic guitars dominated the classic "Rocky Mountain High." John Denver's voice is modified with a reverberating effect that creates a more expansive musical piece than a description would imply. The song itself is a song of loss and discovery in the mountains of Colorado. One point of the song is that someone can find themselves in the solitude of the Colorado mountain wilderness. Another comment is a lament about the number of people moving to Colorado and the loss of that solitude.

"Mother Nature's Son" is a country/pop song. Open fields and blue skies; born poor, singing on street corners. This song is a kind of theme for John Denver and his life, though John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote this song. John's version is mellow with a country flavor.

"Paradise" may remind you of Appalachian folk music; strong on violin, with vocals taking center stage. This song is wonderful and will remind you of the bluegrass music of the 40s and 50s. The topic of this song is environmental; a tale of paradise lost to strip miners.

The next song switches back to easy listening pop. "For Baby (For Bobbie)" is a pop love ballad somewhat in the tradition of Simon and Garfunkel, but without the harmonies.

"Darcy Farrow" is a folk tale of two lovers; she dies in an accident, he kills himself because he couldn't handle the loss. A song that takes place in the area between Nevada and California near Reno, this song could easily have been a cowboy song, but John keeps the tone folk.

The next song is a reminder that the Viet Nam war was in progress in 1972. "Prisoners" is a lament about a woman with a child who is lonely without her husband, who is a prisoner of war. The song concludes with the desire to bring all the prisoners home. This song has a country flavor with a fast beat.

"Goodbye Again" is the business traveler's lament. Each time he has to go on the road they fight. She wants him to stay; he can't and he wishes they wouldn't fight just before he has to go on the road. In its own way this is a love song, a ballad for sure, and probably more folk than country.

The last five songs are conjoined by the seasons of the year. Reading the lyrics, you could see this song performed by a progressive rock group. John Denver sings this song with typical acoustic accompaniment, with a light pop flavor, perhaps folk. The song is a celebration of the seasons of the year. Connecting the five songs into one theme in a suite would make one tempted to call this progressive folk or pop. However, perhaps that's a stretch; this series of songs form a concept.

John Denver managed to make some of the most consistently beautiful, generally acoustic, songs. This album is classic John Denver. If you know John Denver's music, you'll find this one has a lot of class and style, and is well worth owning. If you aren't as familiar with John, this album is easy listening with a flavor that tends toward folk and country, but not strongly so, and also often can be considered pop. It's good music for mellow occasions.

There are several versions of this album in existence. This particular version is imported from Japan. Its major attraction is that it is 24-bit digitally remastered, and audiophile fans of John Denver may find the quality desirable. Everyone else should review the choices available and choose that which meets their needs and budget.
