Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Esoteric but Very Satisfying.......2004-06-02
Excellent Copland; the very best "Quiet City.".......2003-07-05
In a nutshell, what makes this recording special is the "spotlighting" that the choice of works gives to Tim Morrison, the principal trumpeter at the time the recording was made. (As far as I know, Tim Morrison had this role for a number of years, although I haven't seen his presence in recent TV broadcasts of either the Pops or the Boston Symphony, so either he has "moved on" or is perhaps on an extended sabbatical.)
Aaron Copland's "Quiet City" is one of his smaller masterpieces. Scored for chamber orchestra with trumpet and English horn soloists, it provides a nice interplay between these two instruments, with the trumpet getting somewhat the larger role. I must have a half-dozen or more performances of this work, all in anthologies that are in whole or in part made up of the music of Copland, including one in which Wynton Marsalis is the soloist (on the same Sony label, for that matter). But, as much as it's difficult for me to state this, or for readers to accept it, Morrison trumps Marsalis quite handily. His tone is simply gorgeous: full and with a nice "bloom" to it, much like Harry James on his best day. To my taste, this approach meshes perfectly with the work.
Morrison shines again in one of the best-known excerpts - the main theme - from Williams's score for "Born on the Fourth of July" (a score that is far different from what we usually associate with Williams's pen, and one of my favorite Williams scores). The other two excerpts from this film score are "Williams at his atmospheric best": again, something quite different from "usual Williams."
This fine album is rounded out with a nice performance of another lesser-known Copland gem, his suite for "The Red Pony," and a very early Williams score for the film "The Reivers," not at all well-known and so a pleasant surprise with its inclusion. The work includes whimsical narration of the tale by the late Burgess Meredith, having as distinctive (and perfect) a voice for this narration as could be imagined.
This is creative programming at its best, giving us excellent but lesser-known works of both composers. The album sound is terrific, and the Boston Pops musicians - obviously including Morrison - are on the top of their game throughout. A very easy recommendation, deserving perhaps only a slightly more creative title for the album.

A treasury of music and history.......2006-07-06
We also get the composer himself condcuting El Salon Mexico and bits and pieces from Appalachian Spring and The Tender Land, Quiet City from John Williams and the Bston Pops, the deaf perxussionist Evelyn Glennie in a saucy xylophone arrangement of the Hoedown form Rodeo, and more. Leonard Bernstein appears only for a snippet from Rodeo--the Hoedown again--but his famous Copland recordings have been reissued constantly. Finally, the CD ends with a rock-band arrangement of the Hoedown, as a reminder that Copland was the most significant populist among major composers.

Customer Reviews:
A terrific project, esp. if you enjoy wayward country rock.......2005-04-20
These guys aren't exactly a custom fit for country music as they have included some of the acoustic accoutrements, like mandolins, fiddles, dobros and even a banjo now and then. Granted, that leans to country, but not what you would hear on the radio, or see on television. These guys are carving out their own niche in the contemporary country music scene and are definitely worth a listen.
The lead tune, My Girl Friday, comes across as a signature tune. About a woman who is left unattended, unappreciated and vulnerable. It isn't exactly rocket science what's gonna happen. For me, this is the tie-in to country music...a catchy, clever, corny country title.
Fighting for Love is the quintessential song about struggling to hang on to love with the capital L. We make mistakes, we regret them, we try to explain them, but the bottom line is, when it comes to love, it's worth fighting for and singing about. This song delivers.
Next is a "Good Day to Die", subtitled the Alamo Song. It's a terrific ballad about what one might contemplate when the odds are seriously stacked against you.
I can't exactly explain it, but I also really liked "Preacher Michael". Yeah, I guess there's some cool echoes on the lyrics and the incredibly tight harmonies that carry through the entire tune. But, if you listen to the lyrics, the singer lands an older woman, and when they are getting married, the preacher who wants to "see some tongue"! Not only that, but he thinks marriage is better than any "roll in the hay'! So, there's your family values.
This album is way deeper and thoughtful than most country-rock type stuff I've heard before. There is a lot of personal history and dedication put into these songs, all except one of which are original. A terrific project, worth listening to if you enjoy a little wayward country rock. Customer Reviews:
Soulful, stunning album........2005-02-22
Fortunately, I came across it and now I find myself returning again and again to its beautiful mix of Memphis soul and Band-style country. Ferreira has been around for a few decades and he's in Nashville now, where he plays all the local rooms, often with a full band and horns, sometimes with a trio. "Somewhereville" is a gorgeous vibe record, showcasing his soulful voice and tasteful writing.
On the opener, "Bye Bye Baby," he sounds like Elvis Costello in his "King of America" period backed by Van Morrison's band. On "Invisible Man," he teams with another underrated Nashville songwriter, Greg Trooper, for a soul classic. "Moon Over Memphis" and "Guilford Mill" sound like Rick Danko fronting The Band. On the title cut, he adds a worthy chapter to the anguished, lost-my-baby road tune. This is the epitome of Americana music.
You've likely never heard of Richard Ferreira. But it's hard to believe his soulful folk rock hasn't earned him a wider audience. This is an album full of instant classics, songs as comfortable as the flannel shirt he wears, but also rich in depth.
Give it a listen.
