Customer Reviews:
Wonderful songwriter/storyteller.......2002-06-21
The late Townes Van Zandt was arguably the best country songwriter of the last twenty-five years. With lyrics that were poignant, intelligent and sensitive he weaved stories that were sometimes bitter, sometimes haunting and often hilarious.
This live set was my first Van Zandt albumn and it's a keeper. There's a real western flavor to it as he does his rendition of his Pancho and Lefty as well as Dollar Bill Blues, Waitin Around to Die and Pueblo Waltz.
If you have his albumns you won't be disappointed and if you've never heard him this is a great one to start with. A master.
mournful intimacy.......2002-04-22
When I first heard this I thought WOW! this is brilliant. These songs are so great and the tone of the album so satisfying that I thought these must be the definitive versions. His mournful voice and near perfect minor chord melodies and lyrics really hit hard. It's easy to get caught up in the romance of this guy's life and hearing the songs sung live with such intimacy is great. As I listen to more of his stuff, though, I hear better versions of many of the tunes here on other disks. Not bad but not essential.
so simple, so good.......2001-01-11
This is Townes in the perfect setting - live, and with minimal accompaniment. This cd contains what I belive to be the finest recording of "Nuthin'," with a flute providing haunting fills to Townes's dark, spare lyrics. The cd is full of fine versions, but if given the choice of only 1 cd from the TVZ catalog, I would recommend "Rear View Mirror," which is a live collection from this same era. However, this disc is a fine addition for any Townes Van Zandt fan.
The way TvZ was meant to be experienced.......1999-10-15
Though not quite as good as "In the Rearview Mirror," "Live and Obscure" does considerable justice to the genius that was TvZ. His songwriting is absolutely amazing. The pure simplicity of his playing and singing leaves you speechless, just as in "Rearview." The sax adds character to the album, especially on "Poncho and Lefty", for a unique sound that is not overwhelming. All in all, you are left with TvZ doing what he does best, singing with a craftsmanship all his own and not duplicated anywhere else.
Live and Kickin'!.......1999-04-11
For those TVZ fans out there who do not have the taste (or patience) for his 'overly' produced material (though all of it is worth a listen), this album has Townes in a perfect setting - live, simple, and direct. There are no schmaltzy strings, no sliding guitars to compete with the songs. This is just Townes, served plain and simple, the way it should be.

Reminiscent of Emmylou Harris and Sarah McLachlan.......1999-07-16
Julie Adams has a warm-toned, soulful, country-folk sound. If you like Emmylou or Sarah you'll definately dig this. The backup band is tight, restrained, and has the sound that I would liken to early Cowboy Junkies.
I would like the CD better if she stayed away from the blues. Not that she does them a diservice - it's just that she is so good with the ballads. The odd thing though is she does the impossible task of doing a Marvin Gaye song well (Trouble Man). Nobody until now could do that in my opinion.
