5 out of 5 stars Carry Me Back to the Best Years of My Life.......2006-11-05

I swore that I'd never listen to this after I left home. For God's sake, I had to listen to this every night that I remember from the '70's till I graduated in 1987. My parents had it on 8-track and they'd play it after work. When I pretended to loose the thing, they bought the album. A few years ago as a busy mother and wife, I bought the CD and started listening to it when the day came to a close and I'd pour a glass of wine or lemonade and sit back and either read or dance with my husband. My kids love it-- "Hey Mom, what is it when the four of them sing and they sound like one voice?" ("It's called harmonizing.") My children can sing any of these songs. I am down in Arizona right now and I just bought this album for my dad. He was dying and I got it for his birthday because he and my mom didn't have a CD. On the morning of his birthday, he was dying. I went to him and opened up his present and my mom started to cry and told me to play it. He died a little while later while the song, "Thank You World" was playing. It will be played at a tribute to him later. I cannot thank the Statler Bros. enough for their music. It defined my life and I can't get enough of them.

5 out of 5 stars The essential country quartet.......2005-12-26

Forget the pop-crap "Oak Ridge Boys"...this is where it's at. There has never been another quartet (barber-shop, or otherwise) that could compare with the Statlers. This is a group that should have never retired. This Polygram/Mercury release covers the Statlers 1972-75 hits, including "Bed of Roses", "Do you Remember These", and their finest hit ever, "I'll go to My Grave". I was surprised at the affordable price, and expected the recordings to be later re-recordings; but was surprised to find nothing but original tracks here. This CD will definately bring back some memories.

5 out of 5 stars Review of The Best of the Statler Brothers.......2005-09-12

Excellent CD. A treasure for all of us that enjoyed the Statler Brothers during our more youthful days.

3 out of 5 stars The guys have done better.......2003-06-24

The Statler Brothers are as squeaky clean as any group can get. The guys are apple pie, motherhood, Ozzie and Harriet, pure Americana country. They will not be everyone's cup of tea but one can see why they became so popular. They feature crisp lyrics, clear diction and tight harmony. The 11 tracks here are all by the original 4 guys from Staunton, VA-Harold, Phil, Don and the late Lew. None of them were named Statler! High points are subjective but this reviewer liked the wistful "Class of '57" and "Carry Me Back". If you think they don't make movies like they used to, then "Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott" will strike a positive chord. (It helps to have actually seen a Scott movie!). A snide "New York City" was the low point of the album and comes across as elitist-especially for those of us that LIVE THERE! This album may be for established fans. General country listeners may better enjoy the "Rides Again" album.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Overload!!.......2003-03-16

Like all other reviewers mentioned, this music really takes me back to when I was a kid. The interesting thing is that these songs themselves are nostalgic, yearning for a simpler time ("Class of '57," "Carry Me Back," etc.). Of course, the harmonies are probably what overwhelmed us as kids. Even though it was country, it was just so bloody good that we all succumbed to it. Even today, I get goosebumps every time I listen to "Carry Me Back." Now that I'm in my early 30's and can remember when things used to be different, these songs hit home even more. And aren't these songs just a joy to sing at full voice while you're cruising down the highway?? I thought so.

5 out of 5 stars Old Statlers.......2006-03-10

It's good to hear some of the old Statler songs - brings back memories

5 out of 5 stars Good work! Better Than "the Best" !.......2003-06-24

"Rides Again" should appeal to broader country audience than "The Best of the Statlers". RA is very well produced and done in a solid Nashville Sound/mellow country tradition. Like "the Best", all 11 tracks made the Billboard charts, this batch between 1976 and 1980. This reviewer loved "How to Be a Country Star" which is a tribute to several icons in the field. "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories" is a heartfelt tribute to a dad who never returned from WW2 and I actually used "Your Picture In the Papers" as background for a Toastmasters speech! What's not to like? Statler fans who don't own this one can safely buy it. The curious should be brave and at least click on some of the audio samples. If "Rides Again" won't make you a fan, nothing else will. This is still the original 4 from Staunton, VA; Harold, Phil, Don and the late Lew DeWitt with that trademarked tight harmony. I believe Lew's health problems led to his leaving the group shortly after the time frame that "Rides Again" brackets.
