Not bogus, but not great.......2007-06-07
I hate to be kind of a damper, but I can't rave about this like many other reviewers. Mind you, no problems with Suzy's voice. It's good, one of the clearest voices I've ever heard. But the songs just don't have much to them. The lyrics are forgettable for the most part. Much of the album comes accross as "lite" music that one might encounter in dentist office. For those people who are Bogguss fans, there's a full 20 tracks here taking up nearly 80 minutes, so you'll get your money's worth if you are a fan.
the most underrated country singger.......2007-05-12
don't know why she doesn't or didn't get the recognition - maybe it's because she's so pretty - but she is a wonderful singer and her songs are smart and moving.
Great Music from the most underrated country artist ever .......2007-03-28
Suzy Bogguss is a talent to be reckoned with. She sings in her own voice. Her voice is not something that is overpowering. Its just right. She knows what lines are emotional, and which ones aren't. She doesn't over-emote, and doesn't under emote. She can sing any phrase beautifully in her crystal clear mezzo soprano. She never has to swoop, scoop, or simply butcher a phrase like so many country artists do. She doesn't need a faux twang to sound country, either. Her songs were strong and should have been even bigger hits than they were. She was ahead of her game in the early 90s. She came along just before Shania Twain and Faith Hill. The difference is she is not just a plastic singer. She's a singer's singer. An artist that is not only easy on the eyes, but easy on the ears.
Superb collection for very underrated country lady from Illinois!.......2006-06-07
I have seen Suzy many times in concert
and she is outstanding and has put out
seven or eight very good to great LPs.
This is one of them. Too bad my rating
scale only up to four stars (unlike
the very liberal amazon.com one)!
Great job, Suzy!

Great Music. I'm not sure how I missed an artist as good as her for so long.

Capitol wants cash, sells out Suzy.......2006-10-30
If you followed Suzy's hitmaking days, you may remember that this, her first "hits" CD, came out well after the release of two top 5 songs, "Just Like the Weather" and "Hey Cinderella"...neither of which was included. You may also recall that the disc's liner notes, written by genuine Suzy admirer Patsi Cox, refer to the inclusion of "Night Rider's Lament", which in fact does not appear on the CD. Finally, the lovely cover photo was a leftover from the "Voices in the Wind" photo session several years earlier. Bottom line, this was clearly a cheap, rush-it-to-market product which gave unfortunate evidence to every suspicion that Capitol records was more than willing to sell out its middle-tier artists (Suzy, Billy Dean, John Berry, Tanya Tucker) for the bucks needed to keep the Garth machine happy. Suzy deserved much better, and she finally got closer to it in 2002 with the release of her "20 Greatest Hits," a much better package that includes most of her hits plus a good assortment of her better album tracks. Go there.
A good collection.......2006-05-14
Suzy Bogguss is one of the finest vocalists to arrive on the country music scene, although her style varied from traditional country to western swing, to adult contemporary. But, with that said, she has one of the clearest voices since Connie Smith. This 10 song collection includes Suzy's finest songs "Somewhere Between" and "Drive South", as well as a fair duet with Lee Greenwood "Hopelessly Yours". Her career in the spotlight lasted but a little while, and quickly fizzled with the arrival of "superstars" Garth Brooks and Shania. Still, you can enjoy her outstanding vocals with this very affordable collection of origianl releases.
Pleasant songs from an underated vocalist.......2005-04-26
In the early 90's, Suzy had marginal success with these sweet country harmonies. This was a period that also gave us such talented singer-songwriters as Kathy Mattea and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Unfortunately, all of these ladies were soon swept aside by the country-pop of much less talented singers as Faith Hill and Shania Twain.
Suzy has a sweet, pleasant singing voice. She doesn't scream to the rafters. Some people may find this style of music boring. But if you are looking for soothing pleasant melodies and someone who sings with a rich voice, this CD is for you. My favorite cuts are "Someday Soon", "Outbound Plane", "Letting Go" and "Aces". If you like Anne Murray, Kathy Mattea or Mary Chapin Carpenter, then you should enjoy this disc as well. Recommended.
Enjoyable Album by a First-Rate Vocalist.......2004-01-20
Suzy Bogguss' Greatest Hits album is an excellent compilation of her biggest radio hits along with a few other gems. "Letting Go" is my favorite song of hers, partly because it was released while I was in high school so I could relate to it. This song is about a mother/daughter relationship as the girl leaves home for college and Suzy's interpretation is flawless. Other outstanding tracks include "Aces," "Someday Soon," "Drive South," and "Outbound Plane."
In addition to these popular hits, the CD contains a few lesser known songs like "Hopelessly Yours," which is a duet with Lee Greenwood (famous for his rendition of "God Bless The USA") and "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart," where Suzy showcases her yodeling ability. However, the album is missing a couple songs that would have made it even better -- "Hey Cinderella" and "Just Like The Weather." I am still giving the CD 5 stars though, because it is so enjoyable to listen to -- all the songs are great and there is no filler.
Suzy Bogguss has one of the best voices in the genre and hopefully one day she will receive more radio airplay so we can all listen to her more often!
Greatest voice in Country Music.......1999-06-09
This CD is loaded with the best selection of songs of any Greatest Hits CD I've heard. Suzy is a great talent. Anyone who loves the sound of the female voice would enjoy listening to this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Good songs, pleasant voice.......2005-05-03
Suzy Bogguss is probably one of the best kept secrets in country music. She has never really been a huge superstar like some other female artists, but her music is perhaps more real, heartfelt and honest than some other singers. She does not have a belting, shrieking voice like Martina McBride or Reba McEntire. And she is not as flashy or "pop-sounding" like Shania Twain or Faith Hill. She just sings pure, simple songs with her rich, textured voice.
This is probably her best studio album with strong cuts such as "Outbound Plane", "Someday Soon", "Letting Go" and the title track "Aces". I first bought this CD back in the early 90's when it was originally released. The tracks don't seem a bit dated all these years later.
If you are just looking for a Suzy Bogguss hits package that incorporates all of her hits, check out her "Greatest Hits". Recommended.
Phenomenal Voice and Style !.......2005-03-19
Suzy Boggus combines great country style with intelligent lyrics, and a unique voice and style that really make her one of the most distinctive female singers in Country. This Album is such a classic one, not dated in any way. Its commercially sound and would appeal to modern country fans, yet its also honest and sincere. All the tracks are great. The best songs being "Aces"- a great song about a trouble relationship, yet not sappy; "Outbound Plane"- a romantic upbeat tune, with an interetsing aviation theme, and the cathchy "Drive South"- a number sure to get you moving. Suzy is intelligent Country music with a crystal clear as sparkling water vocal tone that is sure to win over non-Country fans and true Country fans alike.
Good New Country Album.......2003-12-04
I have had this CD for several years and I am not disappointed. When I bought it, I was a teenager and didn't have the maturity to comprehend some of the subjects Suzy sang about, but now that I am in my 20's and have lived some more, I totally feel where she is coming from. I hear a woman who is mature and really knows and feels what she is singing about. She doesn't resort to fake histrionics, but tells it like it is. For that I commend her. Even though she hasn't had a hit in a while, I'll always remember her. I think being remembered is more important than scoring all the number ones in the long run. This isn't a traditional country album, but country music isn't all about twang, cowboy hats and bars. It is also about singing real life sentiments experienced by real people. Suzy Bogguss captures that beautifully and understatedly.
The Title Says It All.......2001-12-02
Suzy Bogguss had already released two mostly overlooked records by the time ACES arrived back in 1991. As the saying goes, the third times often the charm, and that was the case for Bogguss, who finally garnered not only long overdue airplay, but commercial success as well. It was also fortunate that this project arrived at a time when the term "country music" encompassed a wide variety of styles. Bogguss was, and never has been, country in the strictest sense--her tastes run more towards a hybrid of country, pop, and folk--she's actually very similar to early Ronstadt, if you have to categorize. No matter the category, all of Bogguss' strengths finally got noticed with what was arguably her best release yet. Among the several astute song choices, special attention must be paid to 'Outbound Plane', 'Someday Soon', and 'Letting Go',all well-deserved hits.ACES remains one of Bogguss' best records, and one of the better country-pop albums to come out of the nineties.
Honest Music.......2000-09-06
There is an honest and straightforward quality to this album which sets it apart from others I own. There are no flashy arrangements or glitzy orchestrations and no over-emoted vocals. Instead we get Suzy Bogguss' beautiful warm voice over rich band accompaniment. Steel guitars, violins, and the occasional harmonica give the music its gentle country feel. Thematically this album deals with separation - leaving, being left, being alone. The lyrics are remarkably uncliched, describing emotions and emotional situations in simple unadorned language. I have owned this album for many years, and it still seems remarkably honest and true.
Of the individual songs, "Outbound Plane" hits closest to home for me, reminding me of one of the most difficult breakups I have ever been through. "Letting Go", which deals with both a mother's and a child's emotions as the latter prepares to leave for college is a remarkably accurate description not only of the conflicting emotions I felt when I first left home for college, but of the similar feelings I had leaving college for grad school, and those I feel now as I contemplate my upcoming move to start my first job.
I consider this album to be an excellent, well-crafted, poignant piece of work. There is nothing which mars it in any way, it is pleasant to listen to, and most importantly, it speaks to my heart.

The truth is that Suzy Bogguss, whose early music reflected her love of Western tunes and yodeling, never really fit into assembly-line Nashville. Rarely did her major-label producers allow her to reveal her true self. This time, she reveals nothing but that. Masterfully produced by Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, she's at home with every tune, be it time-honored jazz chestnuts like Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" or fresh, witty contemporary numbers by Nashville jazz chanteuse-writer April Barrows. Benson, who duets with Bogguss on Barrows's "Cupid Shot Us Both with One Arrow," wisely avoids using a big band. Instead, he surrounds her with a small band of Asleep at the Wheel alumni--including pianist Floyd Domino and driving, Stuff Smith-inspired fiddler Jason Roberts--that provides a sharper, more deft accompaniment than any bigger band could. Liberated from Music Row's relentless pursuit of radio-friendly mediocrity, Bogguss has at last nailed it to the wall with this smart, elegant, and joyous effort. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
SUZY BOGGUSS.......2007-02-04
This is a big departure from her usual, really great, catchy tunes, though! The kind of music that will keep your feet tapping. Definitely worth the money!
A Swing and a Hit!.......2005-07-23
Darn good collection of swing music from one of the clearest, most versatile voices around. Suzy starts with the old Nat Cole standard "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and moves along with lesser-known numbers and several originals. The country/western swing element that Suzy and producer Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel) bring to the album is present but not overpowering. It's completely different from anything else she's ever done, but probably the best thing she's done for quite a while (her Christmas album is also outstanding). Certainly worth the price for any fan of Suzy or any fan of good ol' swing music.
Stepping outside her zone.......2005-01-19
Suzy takes a step outside her usual zone of mellow pop country with this appropriately titled Swing album. The results are solidly listenable and exceptionately pleasant. Lacking in some of the harder edged messages of her country work, this album exudes a great deal of charm.
A treat.......2004-08-05
Suzy Bogguss has produced some pretty forgettable Nashville product in the past, so this comes as something of a surprise. Unlike a lot of pop singers who suddenly do a standards album, she is not overly respectful or intimidated by the material. She wisely kept the band small and although the arrangements are excellent with a Texas swing feel, they do not overpower or overshadow her. The vocals are delivered with warmth and a light-on-her-feet swing. A delight.

Please include my vote for what a good CD SWING is. You do not have to be locked into a particular genre of music to appreciate it. Thanks Suzy.

Quality music from a classy singer.......2005-01-24
Suzy became one of my favorites singers with her incredible but commercially unsuccessful debut album and has remained one of my favorites ever since. This album is fairly typical of the majority of her music - classy contemporary country with an occasional slice of more traditional country. I get the impression that Suzy really prefers the traditional stuff but she knows that a successful career requires a contemporary style.
So this album contains songs from a variety of pop, rock, country and folk songwriters. John Hiatt, whose songs have often been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, is represented by two songs (Drive south,, Lovin' a hurricane). Lowell George (of Little Feat) co-wrote the opening track, Heartache. Cheryl Wheeler (a folk-country singer with a great sense of humor) is represented by one of her sad songs, Don't wanna. Matraca Berg, the prolific country hit writer, co-wrote Eat at Joe's. Richard Leigh, famous for writing Don't it make my brown eyes blue, wrote Cold day in July. Originally recorded by Joy Lynn White, this song was eventually recorded by the Dixie Chicks.
The nod to tradition is provided by Other side of the hill, or which Suzy gets musical
Backing by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
The remaining songs were written or co-written by either Suzy or Doug Crider, with the couple collaborating together for In the day. Letting go (co-written by Doug) is perhaps the best and most famous of their own songs.
If you enjoy contemporary country, nineties style, it doesn't get better than this.
Another Shining Moment.......2001-12-02
Following up her commercial breakthrough, as well as garnering the CMA Horizon Award, Suzy Bogguss unleashed another sterling set in VOICES IN THE WIND. Much like ACES, Bogguss relies on a stellar song selection and her crystalline soprano to convey some of her strongest work yet. She covers John Hiatt not once but twice in two of the set's highlights, the rollicking 'Drive South' and the equally exuberant 'Lovin A Hurricane'. Among the ballads, 'Heartache' remains one of her most country-sounding records, as well as one of her best, and 'Cold Day In July', later covered by the Dixie Chicks, is also terrific. This, along with ACES, marks some of the best country to come out of the early part of the nineties.
One of the best voices.......1999-09-19
Suzy Bogguss is clearly one of the greatest talents in country music this decade. This album is one of the best sets by a female country singer by far in the 1990s, where great country is sometimes a rare thing. Top-notch songwriting and dynamic readings make this album a winner-and one you will listen to repeatedly. Buy this album!
Voices in the Wind is a solid choice.......1999-02-28
Suzy Bogguss' album Voices in the Wind is a solid album by one of country music's top vocalists. There's a number of uptempo tunes including two penned by John Hiatt,"Drive South" and "Lovin' A Hurricane". A fun toe-tapping bluesy song "Eat at Joe's", a Matraca Berg/Gary Harrison tune, is perfectly sung by Suzy and includes great accompaniment by Mark O'Connor on fiddle and Matt Rollings on keyboard. "Letting Go" is a beautiful and poignant song about a young woman leaving home for the first time. Overall, this is a solid choice for country music fans.

This 1989 debut finds Bogguss assuming a neotraditional cowgirl persona, not all that comfortably. Ballad extravaganzas ("Guilty as They Come" and the title track) and western ditties ("Night Rider's Lament," an unnecessary remake of Patsy Montana's "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart") just cowpoke along unimpressively, but more contemporary-sounding numbers such as "Cross My Broken Heart" and Bogguss's own "Take It Like a Man" are superior showcases for her clear, folk-country voice and signposts to her much more successful and satisfying future direction. Exceptions to the not-so-hot neotrad rule: her nailing of Hank Williams Sr.'s "My Sweet Love Ain't Around" and her own saga of the modern West, "I'm at Home on the Range," which scores points for rhyming "Laramie" and "take good care o' me." --Ken Barnes
Customer Reviews:
Suzy is a doozy.......2004-09-22
What can I say? The voice of an angel. Country, blues, swing, Western, you grow it and Suzy Bogguss can cut it. This album "Somewhere Between" is one of many showing the fantastic talents of this lady. It's a shame Patsy Cline couldn't have heard her voice. She would have approved I'm sure. Suzy Bogguss has paid her dues. She has withstood the test of time. Hopefully, this fine talent will be around for a long, long, time.
Brilliant debut with interesting mix of songs.......2004-03-20
Some people criticize this album for including western songs, country oldies and contemporary songs in the same album but I think it all adds to the charm.
Western songs are represented by I wanna be a cowboy's sweetheart (a superb revival of the Patsy Montana classic, especially appreciated by those who had not heard the original), I'm at home on the range (a new song) and Night rider's lament. Country oldies are represented by Somewhere between (a Merle Haggard song) and My sweet love ain't around (a Hank Williams song. Guilty as the come is from the Rodney Crowell songbook. The remaining songs - Handyman's dream, Cross my broken heart, Take it like a man, Hopeless romantic - are all new.
Suzy demonstrated on this album that she could sing any type of country song, that she had a superb voice (echoes of Emmylou) and that, if given the chance, she could become a major star. For whatever reason, Suzy never quite became a major star but she has made many wonderful albums and has a significant fan base.
If you enjoy any of Suzy's music, or if you enjoy quality contemporary country music generally, you will surely love this album.

5 star singer maybe, but not 5 star songs on here.......2005-04-22
Suzy Bogguss does have a fine voice, I'll admit, and when she puts it to first rate songs, the result is wonderful. But I can't in good conscience say that's what we have here, despite the presence of many songwriters (Kim Richey,Tony Arata,Matraca Berg) whose work I usually love. The biggest problem is the songs are a bit lackluster here and on some of the songs that ARE good, the decisions of Bogguss and her hubby (Doug Crider co-produces with her here) sink the song.
HIGHLIGHTS:
She didn't have any chart hits off this from what I understand, but "From Where I Stand" is probably the closest in sound to anything on country radio these days. A newly jilted woman realizes that she's getting her just deserts as her ex who left someone for her does the same again. It's a passable lyric from Kim Richey but she's done better. The low-key "Take me Back" makes use of Garth Brooks for a harmony vocal and it's a charmer. The title cut is an improbable tale of a botched robbery that works nonetheless because of a good reading by Bogguss. "I Surrender" is a tune she co-wrote with Crider and it's a good one.
LOWS:
"When I Run" is one of the tunes I think was sabotaged by its handling. The lyric about emotional intimacy ("I know tryin' to hide is crazy/Walking out won't save me/My demons only chase me when I run") is a great one from Skip Ewing. But the song is way too overproduced and would have been better off with a more "folk" arrangement: just a little acoustic guitar, maybe some steel flavouring here and there, and a shaker. Lose the drums and piano and slow the song down. The other problem I have is Kathy Mattea, who is IDEAL for that type of understated material, is mixed so low she might as well not be here. Talk about wasted resources..."Family Tree" is a trite number about familial ties. "Just Enough Rope" is a by-the-numbers Nashville throwaway.
BOTTOM LINE:
There's not enough distinction on here to make me pull this off the shelf much. You'll definitely not want to purchase this one unheard.
Wonderful Music.......2002-03-15
Thank you Suzy for continuing to make wonderful music, you will always have your admirers out here! Best wishes. Album highly recommended, great material and performances.
Incredible Talent, this Suzy Bogguss!.......1999-07-20
"Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt" is the first Suzy Bogguss project that I purchased! I've been aware of Suzy as a singer since around 1992, but I never realized just how talented she was until I heard this project! And this recording fully showcases her abilities and her incredible talent! There are lesser singers being promoted in country music these days, but this gal has got a voice that just won't quit!! "I Surrender" is one of the most beautiful songs you'll hear in country music today. "Just Enough Rope" is a great, fun song! "From Where I Stand" and "Somebody To Love" are both great! Harmony is the bottom line on "Train Of Thought"! This Suzy Bogguss recording is PURE ENJOYMENT!!!
Just gets better with each album!.......1999-07-07
Suzy never seems to disappoint her fans when they hear her new music. With the album Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt, her talent for pleasing her audience is no exception. Suzy can take you on an emtional roller coaster with the groove of tunes like "Just Enough Rope" and then find your emotional side with songs like "When I Run." Suzy again shows that with each album she makes she only gets better! I give this cd 6 Stars!
Her best since "Aces"!.......1999-03-15
As usual, Suzy follows her own musical path and delivers a solid album of songs that has little in common with the typical ear-candy found on the country radio dial. Each cut here is distinguished by its intelligent lyric and wonderful, sometimes quirky melody. Don't be misled by the guest roster: Patty, Kathy and Trisha are barely audible in their background vocals. Frankly, that's all the better. Suzy's voice shines like it never has before, and the song selection is a delightful trip from blues to folk ballads to light rock to bluegrass. This is NOT BACKGROUND MUSIC. It's an album you'll actually listen to, repeatedly, and enjoy more each time.

A STELLAR OFFERING FROM SUZY!!!!.......2007-06-11
This is one of her best!! Lots of beautiful ballads accentuated by the crystal clear beauty of Suzy's voice with tasteful and not overdone arrangements. Suzy is an artist whose songs are catchy...there's something about the songs that make you remember them...like "Just Like the Weather" and "Hey Cinderella". I love "Souveniers"! One comes to expect quality when you hear a Suzy Bogguss CD and she never disappoints. She never compromised either.....which is the reason she's not a megastar like the whiny, overblown McBride, McEntire or Hill. Suzy's music is very underrated and beautiful! This CD is a great example!
Pretty good souvenir .......2006-02-21
I'm writing this review mostly in reaction to the earlier review that described the song "Souvenirs" as boring. What? From first listen, that track was my favorite on this disc. It subtlely compares relationships that have come and gone to collecting vacation memorabilia -- not a bad conceit at all -- and its melody has the feel of a gentle tide (or, to be less esoteric, it sounds a lot like Shenandoah's major hit "Sunday in the South"). I love this track and would recommend searching out this CD for it alone, given that it was not included on any American compilation releases. Other favorites here include "Hey Cinderella," "Something Up My Sleeve" (which was done better live by Suzy and Billy Dean on the ACM Awards in 1993) and the exquisite "Diamonds and Tears". Side note: I will never, ever understand why Capitol released "You Wouldn't Say That to a Stranger" as Suzy's third single from this album. It was a tedious song that killed her career just as it was poised to skyrocket. The title track would have been a much better choice for garnering heavy radio airplay.
Fantastic Singer/Songwriter........2006-01-05
What can you say? Suzy has a very soothing voice (she can sing me to sleep anytime) not whiney or raspy like some country females singers of today. Something Up My Sleeve is one of her best CD's. I could go the list and break down every song for you. But, your best bet is go to the song samples for this CD and listen for yourself.
Quality contemporary country ballads.......2005-02-21
Suzy never achieved the level of success that I had expected and hoped for, but she had a fairly successful career as a contemporary country singer of the nineties. This album, from 1993, is fairly typical. I must point out that the UK edition features two tracks not included on the standard USA edition - Take it to the limit (from the Eagles tribute, Common thread) and Take it like a man (from Suzy's debut album, Somewhere between). Although they are welcome additions, both can be found elsewhere so don't worry about which edition you buy. The remainder of my review applies to both editions.
The tracks here are all ballads - some slow, some mid-tempo - written by some of the finest songwriters of the time including Matraca Berg, Gary Harrison, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Gretchen Peters, Suzy and her husband, Doug Crider. The opening track, Diamonds and tears is a wistful song about broken dreams. The title track, which closes the album, is a duet with Billy Dean, another country singer who had some success in the nineties without becoming a major star. In between there are many wonderful songs, notably Just like the weather (written by Suzy and Doug), Hey Cinderella (written by Suzy, Matraca and Gary) and Souvenirs (written by Gretchen).
One of many excellent albums recorded by Suzy, every fan of nineties country music is likely to enjoy this.
It is the voice!.......2005-01-06
Susy has the purest voice in country music. So many country artists are just a little fatiguing to listen to, their voice is so close but just not quite on, and you almost can't wait for the last song on the album to finish. With Susy, you will put it back on for another play, every note is nailed and natural! It is like listening to a birds song, she was meant to sing!

Of the long list of Nashville women, only a few stand out for technically pristine voices, and Suzy Bogguss, with her wonderfully clear contralto and pinpoint intonation, is near the top of the list. Yet in her many years of recording, she's never quite achieved the breakthrough that an early Country Music Association Award promised. Suzy Bogguss, which cruises down the middle of the radio-friendly road, is a good example of why this is so. While Bogguss writes and performs tasteful material that scores high points for integrity and beauty--check out the wistful ballad "An Empty Heart and a Harvest Moon," cowritten by her husband, Doug Crider--she doesn't always infuse her performances with the emotion necessary to involve the listener. That said, this low-key program--much of it about new beginnings and the self-reliance necessary to start over--has its moments. But a good dose of spirited Western swing might have done wonders. --Alanna Nash

Simply Awesome.......2002-10-06
I bought this album because I'd heard one song off it, which was "Good night." After getting the album and giving it a listen through, I've been nothing but pleased.
Suzy is an excellent contemporary country artist. I tend to be a fan of older country like Merle Haggard, or fringe country like Dwight Yoakam, but Suzy definately pleases on this album.
This album is hard to find in Calgary, FYI.
Non-Commercial, Non-Mainstream Suzy.......2001-03-19
The ... review of this album and of Bogguss assumesthatboth have to make a Nashville 'breakthrough' to be reallygood. Suzy does her regular, quite identifiable, independent thing onthis album and at a very high standard. She does music that appeals tothe soul. Western swing is not her thing. She obviously cares more formusic than money. .... That said, this album is a keeper if there everwas one.
Suzy's Best Yet.......1999-09-15
Have you ever had a cd that you loved so much you've wondered how the artist was ever going to top it? I felt that way after hearing Suzy's cd "Give Me Some Wheels". When her last cd, "Nobody Loves Nobody Gets Hurt", came out, I figured she had reached the apex. There was no way she could top it. I'm glad to say I was wrong! Suzy's new cd, "Suzy Bogguss", continues to show what a vibrant, strong performer and songwriter she is. There aren't many voices as pure as hers. Just one listen to a track like "Look What Love Has Done" will thrill you with the clarity, precision, and simple beauty of her voice. The first single, "Goodnight", is simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking, with a classic sound that people will be playing for years. Another highlight is "Love Is Blind", a duet with T. Graham Brown. He's got a gravelly, powerful voice that really compliments her. Suzy Bogguss has definitely hit a new creative pinnacle with this one. If you haven't checked out her previous cd's, I'd also recommend "Something Up My Sleeve", "Aces", and the two I mentioned at the beginning of the review. Also, if you like Suzy, you should also check out Matraca Berg, another incredible singer/songwriter.
Suzys Best Yet!.......1999-09-01
Thank Heavens she is off Capitol Records (or should I say Garth Records) and is now on Platinum. Suzy is free to shine..like she did when she was just on Liberty.Do yourself a favor and pick up this gem! This is easily her best work yet.
This SUZY SOARS!!!.......1999-08-31
SUZY BOGGUSS has delivered an awesome stock of goods with her latest self-titled project from Platinum records!! If you thought Suzy had already recorded her best stuff in the past, THINK AGAIN!! She just pushed it to a whole 'nother level! Nobody can interpret a song better than Suzy. Her music has soul, sung with so much feeling. From the first notes of "Taking That Red-Eye Home", the listener is whisked away on a musical odyssey that soars! "Goodnight" for some reason makes me think of Patsy Cline! It's a gem! "Love Is Stronger" is as soulful a country song as you'll ever here! Suzy's duet with T. Graham Brown is a classic!! When I first heard about this collaboration, I have to admit, I couldn't imagine these two sounding good together, Suzy's crystal-clear smoothness, and T's gruff and grinding toughness. Believe me, the result is incredible! "Hold Me To It" is one of the prettiest songs Suzy has ever recorded, absolutely wonderful! "Love Every Time" is fun and jazzy, while "It's A Perfect Day (For a Little Rain)" has a funky feel! "Look What Love Has Done To Me" will make your ears(and heart) melt! Twelve songs total on this project, and none of them are fillers. You're gonna love it! There may be other artists receiving more promotion and airplay, but Suzy's simply the best!

When Suzy Bogguss released her debut album, Somewhere Between, in 1989, Chet Atkins wrote the liner notes, saying, "Her voice sparkles like crystal water." It did, but it also quickly drained away without leaving a mark. Bogguss has always had a pretty soprano, but it never seemed connected to any emotion or tradition worth caring about. It's only on her sixth album, Simpatico, which is co-credited to Atkins, that she has at last made music worthy of her talent. "You Bring Out the Best is Me" is one of the 10 songs on the album, and it summarizes Atkins' effect on Bogguss. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Too bad this one's Out Of Print.......2007-01-19
Here is a disc that will remind you why just about everybody loved Chet Atkins. Like so many other artists, Chet helped Suzy Bogguss get her start. From working together, they decided they'd like to do an album together and what an effort it turned out to be!
The smoothness of Suzy's voice is in perfect harmony with Chet's playing in that spare "just right" style he had. The production allows Suzy's singing and Chet's playing to be present in the mix and even to an untrained ear they sound exceptional.
This album is a good example of what's happening in music today. As good as this one is, it should be judged a classic and never go out of print. However because not many people even know about it, you have to do like I did and search it out from a second hand source. By my humble judgment, it was sure worth the effort.
3.5 rating. Kinda misses the mark........2004-05-21
Darn. This album opens with a fun, jauntily stripped-down acoustic version of the Jimmie Rodgers oldie, "In The Jailhouse Now" -- exactly the kind of sound I was hoping this album would have -- but it soon slides into soft, over-orchestrated Nashville pop, stuff that misses the mark, as far as I'm concerned. There are a couple of tunes that dip back into the simpler style (and they are also pretty nice), but this is one of those guess-they-just-can't-help-themselves outings in which two talented artists who have sometimes-rootsy leanings let their love of studio technique get the best of them. These two are, indeed, simpatico, but it extends to the poppy stuff as well as the more traditional. Bogguss & Atkins fans probably won't be disappointed, but grumpy traditionalists like myself will find this a bit too goopy.
"Simpatico" is Sympatico.......2003-03-12
Exquisite! Suzy Bogguss is at the top of this genre, and Chet Atkins' participation ensures that this disk is true gold.
