Jim Campilongo has patiently amassed a loyal following in San Francisco by performing regularly in clubs and now and then putting a tasty assortment of instrumentals together on an album. Heavy, his third collection with his "cowboy jazz" ensemble the 10 Gallon Cats, is a welcome addition to the guitar virtuoso's uniformly appealing oeuvre. The follow-up to the ballad-laden Table for One (credited to the Jim Campilongo Band, which is the same core group with steel guitarist Joe Goldmark stepping aside in favor of accordionist/Hammond B3 player Rob Burger) is aptly named: with the exception of the pensive "Tiramisu," Heavy consists of gutsy, aggressive workouts built around the heated tradeoff solos between Telecaster master Campilongo and Goldmark. Not afraid to mix yucks in with their licks (is that "Aqualung"'s signature riff at the beginning of "Pat and Patsy"?), Campilongo and company have come up with another winning instrumental set that should expand his following. --Steven Stolder

Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. Era Vulgaris - Less Songs in the Package but Nice Enough.......2007-07-17

I often wonder why record labels are constantly using market differentiation strategies depending on where and how the product is sold. Believe it or not, the Brazilian version for the download of "Era Vulgaris" contains three more songs than the CD and two more than the iTunes versions. These songs are named "Running Joke" (available on iTunes), "Era Vulgaris" (also available on the British CD) and "The Fun Machine Took a S**t and Died" (also available on the French CD). It's a common practice that, while makes some people happier to own just a few more songs than the others, makes these others to feel like fools. People who choose to buy the CD do so because they like the physical product, to carry and play it everywhere without any DRM restriction, just the old way. I am sorry to say that not everyone gets the same product for the same amount of money. That's a shame. It is interesting to note that the full 14-track version runs for about 62 minutes, which fits perfectly onto an audio CD. So absolutely no excuses that anybody could give us for such differences are reasonable.

Now let's focus on the "common" and "less privileged" version, which is the CD. Less privileged for sure, but cool enough to provide us some moments of delight. It's hard rock, but not that hard (I mean annoying here) in the general sense. My personal picks are "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Into the Hollow" and "3's & 7's". In some songs, while hearing Josh Homme on vocals, it often reminds me of Chris Cornell's voice (specially on "Battery Acid" and "3's & 7's"). I think they both own a very similar singing style.

"Make it Wit Chu" is a serious mistake. Sucks a lot! If for some reason they didn't want to gather all of the 14 songs in the CD version, "Era Vulgaris" or "The Fun Machine..." would have been better choices to put in place of this one. For this reason, and only for this reason, I give this record a 4-star rating.

A return to form.......2007-07-16

After their last album I was't holding out much hope for this one. But turns out I was wrong - it's great! The lineup is probably more Josh Homme's Flying Circus, but that doesn't seem to matter.

Heavy Hypnosis.......2007-07-16

This album isn't as instantly likeable as previous outings by QOTSA - even though some tracks grab you from the first play. It is only after repeated listening that some of the subtleties begin to reveal themselves and the real craft that's been put in comes to the fore.
If there's one word I'd use to describe the appeal of this band it's "energy". Even with a new band line up this is tight, heavy and above all energetic. It gets into your head and makes you move. The tone isn't exactly dark but it is brooding, atmospheric and has that hint of danger that gives the music a real edge. The singles are good and give you a flavour for the album but it's only when you hear this album as a whole and enjoy tracks like "River in the Road" and "Misfit Love" that you'll see what's going on.
I'd highly recommend it.

Need more time on this album .......2007-07-14

I'm still debating this album, maybe because I'm too busy? not sure. I've given it the more than three time listen, for it to stick. so far some songs are actually memorable. Sick sick sick is okay for now. Into the hollow is cool. the strongest song on here is River in the Road. it is just amazing.

Maybe I'll listen it again later and I'll love it then. This happened to me with Faith No Mores Album of the year. I wasn't thrilled with it at first then three years later became my whole soundtrack with exception to "Might Surprise your self". i may right something later on how I feel.

What I don't like is "Bulby" and I miss Natasha Schneider

Quirky robot rock with sex thrown in .......2007-07-11

Josh has put out another good album. I like it a lot more than the last two. The first Queens was classic material. The second Queens was very good as well, but the last couple of albums wasn't my personal favorite. Yeah, yeah, I understand why the artist has to change, and develope, and grow, and progress. Yata yata yata, this album is fun but I miss what Queens sounded like when they had just arose out of Kyuss. If you don't know Kyuss then do yourself a favor and find some.

Just an amazing group!.......2007-07-19

When I first heard the sample song from Symphony X's web site, I wasn't too sure about the direction they took with this CD. It's a deeper, darker, and harder CD than any of their previous releases. I impatiently waited for the arrival of my new CD and when it came I quickly unwrapped it and stuck it on my Zune for a private screening. From the opening track, I was struck with awe at this group who defies modern generalizations of their genre by adding an arsenal of instruments into their tracks that mold together with the traditional "metal" sound rather than mixing in and sounding out of place. From the first time I heard one of their songs, I was thrilled to find another group that wasn't afraid to add in some piano and orchestration into their music, much like Jon Oliva, who is the mastermind behind Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, or Artension.

So, as I sat listening to the first track of Paradise Lost, I couldn't help but feel that same excitement that I felt the first time I heard a Symphony X song. It's an instrumental with what sounds like Latin vocals chanting. It really sets the stage for the rest of the album and is a fantastic way to open a album. I was very impressed.

When the second song came on, I knew I was going to love the album, yet I also realized something else: they kicked up the level of intensity enough that it might turn some people off. If you barely tolerated their music before, then you'll be pushed over the edge with the new CD. But if you loved their previous offerings, you'll be in heaven with the new sound. Russell Allen's vocals are deeper, heavier, and certainly filled with an intensity that hasn't been reached before on a Symphony X album. The guitar and bass riffs are more intense and even made my niece exclaim, "Could you imagine playing that on Guitar Hero?!" Michael Pinnella's keyboards are toned down a bit in most of the songs compared to previous releases, but they are there when needed and add that unique element to Symphony X's music much like Vitalij Kuprij gives to Artension's.

As I finished the album the first time, I sat there for a minute contemplating the whole experience. The first time through I had my headphones on and followed the lyrics in the book. Yet, as I listened to it, I found myself in awe of the artwork found within the insert that had the lyrics on it. Much as the picture on the front shows, this is a battle between angels and demons. As the title states, Paradise Lost, it's clear from the music and pictures who ends up winning. My favorite picture (which I need to find a poster of!) is of a dark angel standing over a fallen white angel with a glaive at the fallen angel's back. There are lakes of fire with billowing clouds and lava erupting all around. I know, strange picture to be fascinated with, but the picture goes so well with the music and is just amazing.

I'm finding that the more I listen to this CD, the more I like it. It's certainly more intense than any other Symphony X CD, though it's not quite their best (I give that to The Odyssey, followed by V The New Mythology Suite), but it's definitely amazing. I'm just in awe at this group's ability to keep the quality of their releases so high and their music so unique and captivating. I've had their music for two years now and have not grown tired of any of it. They are just that good.

The bottom line here is that this is a great CD. The heavier sound still works great and that amazing "Symphony X" style is still in full force. These guys know how to impress, and this album is no exception.

Awesome riffs, virtuous keyboard player and an evil voice by Mr. Allen. This is the best vocal performance from Russel Allen and the fastest craziest and most insane guitar playing I've heard in a long time. THe dark lyrics are grrrreat. Everything from the opening track -operesque-Rhapsody sound alike- to the artwork is amazing. Sit down, listen and enjoy. By far, the best from 2007

What a Bummer.......2007-07-17

Big letdown from this great band. Like ketchup pouring out of a bottle, I waited with eager anticipation for the release of this CD. However, the final product was just ordinary- some nice moments here, some good playing. But, overall this has to be the biggest disappointment of the summer of 2007. Don't listen to the super fans. This is a weak CD lacking any memorable songs. I love this band, so it pains me to write this. I am even going to go as far as saying that I hate the way Allen sings on this CD and he is one of my favorites. Oh well, I hope their next effort is a lot better. Sorry if I made you mad super fans...but I am a super fan also...I'm just an honest one.

Good writing...not as good overall as "Odyssey" or "V", but well worth buying if you're a Symphony X fan.

I'm a huge Symphony X fan and as I expected when I put this CD in ..I was floored. This is their best and greatest effort so far...and trust me all their work is amazing. What ever you do do not pass this up, If your a Dream Theater fan you will LOVE this. I don't see how anyone could say their a really big fan of the band and give them less then 3 stars on this..if so, then your not really a Symphony X fan. Great work...true artist.

Great as always.......2007-07-19

This is another great album from Dream Theater. For me, this one couldn't beat the previous one (Octavarium). It's because this one they were focusing to create more heavy songs. That's really great, but for me I prefer a little bit more light. Just a little bit, like Octavarium. If you are a progressive music lover and a heavy metal lover as well, Dream Theater is your band. If you like a little bit more Heavy than Progressive, this is your album.

Simply outstanding.......2007-07-18

This CD continues to show the diversity that we have come to know and love about DT. This is a marked departure from the storyline driven recordings and is a sonic assault with dark themes and hard-driving instrumentation. Basically, take Train of Thought and turn up the intensity to 11... The accompanying DVD does an great job of explaining what the band wanted for this album (concept, composition, lyrics, etc.) and allows the fan to experience how DT arrived at the final product. There is great studio footage of the boys being the "boys", and it continues to show that DT has four of the greatest musicians on their particular instruments as you will ever find.

In the many reviews that I have read both pre and post-purchase people try to pigeon-hole the genre of this album for reasons that escape me. All I can say is, if you like rock, metal, prog-metal or any combination and variation thereof, you will not be disappointed in Systematic Chaos.

Another great album from Dream Theater!.......2007-07-18

For those familiar with Dream Theater this album continues their musical domination of the progressive genre. For those thinking about giving Dream Theater a listen, this is a great way to get familiar with their incredible talent. The bonus DVD is worthwhile, giving you a glimpse into Mike Portnoy's creative process and an idea of how much work goes into the studio process.

My favorite album has always been Images and Words, but this one is slowly creeping into that spot. Transitions, development and musicality all blend so well, resulting in an album that is moving, hard and fast yet still has one or two of those ballads to keep the pace manageable.

The track Constant Motion is a great example of their talent, with so many changes in key and time that you can get dizzy trying to take it all in. Throughout the entire track there are examples of what makes Dream Theater great. Powerful riffs and zinging notes from Petrucci's guitars, just-right vocals, oh-so complex drums, Jordan Rudess' amazing keyboard tones, and Myung's accurate bass.

Can't stop listening to this cd! .......2007-07-19

I have been a Marilyn Manson fan since 94' when I saw them live with Nine Inch Nails in Sacramento. I love this cd and personally have not been able to stop listening to it since I bought it! I was scared to buy it because of some of the bad reviews, but I'm glad I went with my gut feeling and went for it. "To each his own I guess."

The ones that make you come unglued........2007-07-14

This was a rather disappointing entry from Brian Warner. I don't think anyone would argue that "Antichrist Superstar" is perhaps Warner's best work to date. "Eat Me, Drink Me" is lacking good songs and memorable lyrics. There are a few standout tracks like "The Red Carpet Grave", "They Said That Hell's Not Hot" and "Heart Shaped Glasses", but these are countered with bland, boring tracks like "Evidence", "Are You The Rabbit?" and "Eat Me, Drink Me". This leaves a handful of mediocre tracks like "If I Was Your Vampire", "Putting Holes In Happiness", "Mutilation Is The Most Sincere Form Of Flattery", "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3" and "Just A Car Crash Away".

Mr. Warner needs to find a new gig. After collecting all of his albums and listening to him for 11 years, it seems that he has run out of new morbid ideas. It's time for a change. Is Mr. Warner going to be 50 years old and still wearing the silly spooky fake contact lenses? Is he going to still be writing teenage angst-ridden songs? I find Rob Zombie, Trent Reznor and Ozzy Osbourne to be more mature and even more daring with their music than Marilyn Manson. While "Eat Me, Drink Me" isn't bad, it's nothing close to five stars. In fact, I was more than a little bored this time around, and isn't that the worst criticism you can receive from a fan?

I needed to think about it, but..........2007-07-13

I decided that I love this album. I admit that at first, I was a little taken aback, not because the music wasn't good, but because it seemed so different than any of his previous works. But despite this, there were a lot of songs I found enjoyable and meaningful. I gave it a few listens, and each time, I became more impressed with the actual depth of this album. The more I listened to it, the more I realized that while it was different from any of his previous works, it was completely in keeping with his previous patterns. Let me explain why.

What I love about Manson is that each of his albums is different from the last, and incorporates and explores new sounds, themes and attitudes. Antichrist Superstar is a completely different album from Mechanical Animals, which is completely different from Holywood, which is completely different from Golden Age... etc. Each of his albums has explored a different mood and selection of themes, but at the core is always the fantastic artist who is Manson himself.

Maybe those who like their rock angry will be disappointed that there isn't much to headbang to. Maybe I am not as disappointed as some because my favorite of his works has always been Mechanical Animals, precisely because it was so deep and thoughtful rather than focusing on anger and rebellion. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Antichrist Superstar, but I enjoy Manson's music so much precisely because he is that AND much more. An exploration of love, be it the dark and moody love fitting of his music, seems to be the next logical territory for Manson to cover. If I had to choose only one artist to listen to for the rest of my life, I would probably choose Manson, and not because I consider myself a "Mansonite" - my musical tastes are much too varied for that - but rather, it's because he's one of the few artists whose songs could pretty much cover any and all of my moods.

With that in mind, I don't think this was his best work, but in my opinion it was not a failure by far. I personally find it to be a stronger offering than Golden Age, even though I also enjoy that album. If you prefer the angry side of Manson, you will probably disagree. Technically speaking, I was prepared to object to what initially reminded me of emo-style guitars on some of the songs (Red Carpet Grave, Heart-Shaped Glasses). However, I realized that he has always incorporated new musical styles in his music (come on, you know Golden Age wasn't pure rock/metal, yet most Manson fans still like it...). I personally don't like emo, and so I didn't care for these songs, but I can't in good conscience fault the artist for something he's always done. Keep in mind that I'm not saying the songs were emo songs, only that they had some musical elements that were reminiscent of emo. I also found "If I Were Your Vampire" to be the least strong song on the album lyrically, although not musically, simply because the theme of the lyrics sounded a little cheesy to me and not as genuine as the rest of the album. So, four stars and not five.

And finally, can we all grow up beyond accusing every single artist of selling out as soon as they stop sounding exactly like whatever the first album of theirs you ever heard was? People have accused Manson of this since Mechanical Animals, and with every new album he "sells out" according to a new batch of fans. I personally accept and prefer that artists grow and change. If Manson starts churning out cookie-cutter albums that sound just like Antichrist Superstar when he's 60 years old, then I'll say he sold out.

This Album Blows.......2007-07-13

This is evolution: The Money, The Fame, then the Crap! I have been a huge manson fan since the beginning and have tried to listen to the album several times. Emphasis on the word TRIED. Some of Cat Stevens' albums have had more BALLS than this piece of $@#$. Its not just that Manson is weak, the band sounds terrible. What drunk, retarted, baby monkey did the guitar work? Look for this album on EBAY over the next coming days, you'll get a great deal from me.

Ozzy returns with a startlingly heavy ninth studio album, a record filled with vows to continue his rock 'n' roll ways ("Not Going Away," "I Don't Wanna Stop"), meditations on the state of a world that has changed surprisingly little since Black Sabbath's early days ("Black Rain," "God Bless the Almighty Dollar") and the obligatory ballad ("Here for You," which can be read either as a letter to a lover or a love letter to his fans). With longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde providing plenty of brutal, soul-searing riffs and solos, there's no shortage of reasons to throw the horns, raise your fist, and yell. The rhythm section of Mike Bordin (drums) and Rob "Blasko" Nicholson (drums) is simply the best since Randy Castillo and Phil Soussan joined up for 1986's The Ultimate Sin and fires most accurately on the title cut, "Lay Your World On Me" and "Countdown's Begun." There's no "Crazy Train" or "Mama I'm Coming Home" here but Black Rain is a more convincing statement for it. Ozzy's Back.......2007-07-18

Finally!!! A new Ozzy album. Good album; although a bit on the soft side (similar to Down to Earth). This album is filled with thick Zakk riffs and licks, which was worth the purchase. If you're an Ozzy fan, it's worth the purchase, if only to add to the collection.

Very good album, very consistent........2007-07-17

At first, I was not blown away by this. But after a few more spins, I really started to like it. It is not as heavy as some of his earlier stuff, but it is better than most of his later work. I like most of the songs. There are no big standouts, but not any really low points either. The album is pretty even and if you like any other work from Ozzy, you probably will enjoy this.

My favorite track is "Lay Your World On Me" and my least favorite is "Trap Door".

My favorite Ozzy album is "No More Tears" followed by "No Rest For The Wicked" which were the first 2 albums Ozzy used Zakk Wylde. I do also really like "Diary Of A Madman", but only for the few standouts it has. I did not care much for "Down To Earth" which was the last album Zakk was on.

Along with this album, I am currently listening to Megadeth-United Abominations, Dream Theater-Systematic Chaos, and Kamalot-Ghost Opera.

Ozzy rocks.......2007-07-13

Ozzy rocks with this one. I would highly recommend it. Many of the songs are on current topics, war, global warming, but with the Ozzy and Zakk Wylde sound we've loved throughout the years. His voice has never been better.

Ozzy's Black Rain

I've been listening to Ozzy since I was 12, and I'm now 37. So we're looking at my 25th anniversary as a fan. I can't give an unbiased review because Ozzy means the world to me. Just the sound of his voice makes me feel like someone else sees the world the way I do. So that said, you can take this review for what it's worth to you.

Black Rain is a very good album. Of course it's not Blizzard or Diary, but it is a solid set of songs. True Ozzy fans will appreciate it; others probably won't--at least not all of it.

Here's a brief track-by-track commentary.

"Not Going Away" is a good start for the CD. The sentiment of "I'll never stop" is a bit cliché, but it works.

"I Don't Wanna Stop" is the first single off the album and repeats the "I'll never stop" theme of "Not Going Away". It's a disappointing song given its placement in the second slot.

"Black Rain" is a timely song, speaking to the war fought over the "black rain" of oil. I hate whiney political stuff in rock songs. Think Bono. But Ozzy isn't whiney and this isn't some stupid U2 song. He's a prophet of doom and this is his latest anthem. And don't forget this is the man who gave us "War Pigs." "Black Rain" follows nicely in the tradition of "Children of the Grave."

"Lay Your World on Me" is the highlight of the CD as far as I'm concerned. This ballad may be written with Sharon or one of Ozzy's children in mind, but it works even better if you interpret it as written for the fans--and who knows, maybe that's even (partly) what Ozzy intended.

"The Almighty Dollar" laments crass commercialism and perhaps the war. It's a little tough to take, given Sharon's crass commercialism, but it has a good sound.

"11 Silver" is excellent, dealing with addiction among other things. It really rocks and features a shredding solo from Mr. Wylde.

"Civilize the Universe" is another anti-war song, a theme that gets tiresome at this point on the CD. Still it has some great hooks, especially the chorus.
"Here for You" is the second ballad on the CD and repeats the theme of "Lay Your World on Me." It's a very good song, but not nearly as effective as "Lay Your World on Me".

"Countdown's Begun" is perfectly listenable album filler.

"Trap Door" is also perfectly listenable album filler, but a disappointing note to end on.

uninspired effort.......2007-07-11

I don't blame ozzy as much as i do zakk wylde. the songs sound like leftover b-side BLS songs, throwaway tracks with patheticly boring guitar riffs and zakk's weakest solo efforts of his career. not only are the riffs as stock and generic as the lyrics / vocals, but the songwriting is so weak that even a diehard ozzy fan will skip each track in hope that the next is worth it. ozzy's voice sounds so computerized and proves that if your not going to write a decent cd, than why taint your legacy? they complain that down to earth (2001) was weak but at least it had some good songs and ozzy sounded like himself, it was original and zakk's drunk out of shape guitar playing ruined this album, as it plaguaed his leads on the last one. he's washed up and forgot what it means to be a guitar hero. they said this album would be the one to blow away no more tears (1991), yet is by leagues ozzy's weakest album of his career, solo or with sabbath.

Their best in 20 years.......2007-07-13

The Scorpions have joined Iron Maiden as 2 of the old groups to put forth a great effort on their latest release. I haven't been this impressed with a Scorpions cd since the mid to late 80's. Klaus' voice sounds incredible, and the lyrics and music are top notch. There is a reason why people are still buying this music, because todays rock bands have forgotten about the guitar as a fundamental instrument. If you're a fan of the Scorpions, you won't be disappointed.

This is a GREAT album.......2007-07-11

This is the best Scorpions Album since Love Drive. I have been listening to the Scorps since they were "THE" underground band when I was in high school. So I go back to Virgin Killers and before. This Album is GREAT. To those talking about the Scorps losing their "sting" you can't expect 55 + year olds to write an album of anger like their old stuff. This album shows a mature group of successful musicians doing what they do best. That is writing songs with great melody and believe me, when they need to get heavy they do. I cannot stop listening to this opus. One song is catchier than the next. Klaus sounds unreal and Mathias lets it rip when he needs too..... Buy this CD as you will not be sorry.... ALBUM OF THE YEAR HANDS DOWN...... Desmond Child is a RICH Man for a reason..... The songs, playing and production are all top shelf.

Nearly 25 years after its formation, Megadeth is making its most brilliant work, a feat that some acts find unthinkable--maybe impossible--after half that time. When Mustaine sings about politics it's never in the abstract, faraway sense; his lyrics are riddled with references to the here and now--the boundaries and bombs that make the threat of war--or the threat of doom-- real. So it's no real surprise that this release features lyrics liberally peppered with references to Afghanistan, 9/11, NATO and the like.
Of course, no one buys a record or a ticket to a show specifically to hear five-minute polemics and that's where Mustaine's real talent--a talent for creating ear-perking riffs and solid, carefully constructed songs--comes in. The album may require that you read the newspaper on a regular basis but it also allows you to let loose with abandon and excitement. "Never Alone... a Call to Arms," "Gears of War" and "Play for Blood" are remarkable because they recall the classic metal of Judas Priest, Diamond Head, and the like and prove that there's nothing quite like an overdriven boogie-based riff to excite the most primitive impulses in the listener. Mustaine makes a bid for commercial radio by revisiting Youthanasia's "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)" with Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia. Megadeth has grown some new teeth.......2007-07-17

A lot of 80's metal bands are still around, languishing in mediocrity and, after "The System Has Failed," I had written off Megadeth as one of them. I bought UA anyway, however, for old-times sake. I have to say, Dave Mustaine still has something to offer musically.

That's not to say that UA is a great album; it's pretty good--not their best work ever but the best that they've done in a good while. Dave has always been a pretty-good songwriter and it shows on this disc. The soloing seems to have regained some fire as well--cleaner and more technically proficient. As many have pointed out, the lyrics are overtly political, which is nothing new for Megadeth. (Who cares anyway? Who buys CDs for the lyrics?)

Megadeth had grown some new teeth. This is a good, solid album. It's convinced me to fork over the money to see them live when they come here in September.

Actually I really like this album, .......2007-07-15

though I cannot give it five or even four stars. More like 3.5 for good effort. I have followed Megadeth since 92' when I bought Countdown on tape and have purchased most of their albums, except for Risk and the World Needs a Hero. I will say that the first five tracks are awesome, there are blazing riffs on and interesting lyrics on each one, and they don't sound all alike. I did not like the entire album because the middle falls on its face, it becomes repetitive and things start to sound alike. I really wish that Dave M and Dave E would settle their differences along with M. Friedman and N. Menza and get together to put out some truly great stuff. Unlike some reviewing here I think Mustaine still has plenty of ideas and passion for his music, I think the problem here is the other musicians; there was a better lineup on the System Has Failed, IMO. My favorites include Sleepwalker, with its neat opening and killer riffs, Gears of War and the title track rock, along with Burnt Ice.

I seem to stratch my head in wonder when I read reviews that tell me Megadeth's "United Abominations" is going back to their 1980's roots. To be honest, I just dont hear it. There are some good solid songs on this such as Sleepwalker, United Abominatinos, Gears of War, and Pray for Blood. The rest? Not so good, in fact just plain bad. I am in no way trying to compare this to the likes of any material, just judging it as I would any other album. But since everyone else is, then let me give you my two cents worth. Its NOTHING like the material written in the 80's. Even "So far, so Good, so what" (which was not well recieved by Megadeth fans at the of its release) is much better. Even "more modern" Megadeth such as "Cryptic Writings" is a better effort. (but its no where as bad as "Risk") Its not a total failure. There are four solid songs here, but that is about it. The rest, you decide, But it just sounds like filler material to me, and the band (new line-up) just doesnt seem to flow good with Dave. Try it out, but dont expect "Peace Sells", "Rust in Peace", "Countdown to Extiction" or "Cryptic Writings" because those are Megadeths best work..

Disappointed Again.......2007-07-11

I really wanted to love this cd but once again it's "Megadeth Lite." Dee Dee, Dunk, Dee Dee Dee, Dunk Dunk. Dave's rythms are absolutely boring. I only got thru about five songs - tell me the good stuff is to come. I am a huge M fan but for several cds Dave seems obssesed with just singing and singing and singing. Meanwhile, the guitar just drones on and on and on. The rythm guitar is just lame. M has turned into melodic metal; a power metal band. He repeats himself over and over again in his vocals. For the past several cds the songs just sound the same over and over again. There is no FIRE. And we want it so badly we keep coming back. The M we love made their point with lyrics and then put there heads down and PLAYED. Dave, I have complete respect for you - but write a book! You have all these things you want to say and they need to be heard but not with kick A$$ metal! You are so busy getting your point across there is no MUSIC. Say what you have to say and then let the band pound!!! There is no urgency to this music, no BALLS. I am not a musician but it just sounds like the same old boring thing M has been putting out - one Bridge after another. This is NOT heavy metal; it's melodic metal M unfortunately has been offering for some time. It's like Dave is just very tired. And I hate to write this review.

This best-of is loaded with the usual smash suspects plus three new cuts--the sub-Mellancamp "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night," the Bed of Roses-style ballad single "Always," and a low-key remake of "Living On A Prayer" titled "Prayer '94." Decent Start...but hopefully a better one will come along.......2007-07-10

As far as greatest hits by the band, this I believe is the first one of studio cuts anyway. I saw this one in the Spring in the top Ten at Amazon, and was wondering why all the sudden interest in Bon Jovi, of course they did just come out with a new CD, and the new stuff is pretty good, me myself recently got the Remasters of their first 3 or 4 Cd's, and I admit that "Keep The Faith" was the last one I bought...But I did get the big box set of rarities 100 Million fans can't be wrong, so they are indeed my major rock guilty pleasure.

Is there no "Essential" Bon Jovi yet?, didn't see one...I was hoping for a 2 CD set of their hits along with a few deeper album cuts by now not that I need that, just that it would seem it's time for that since they've been around for 20 plus years now. Hopefully it isn't far off, this band deserves a better career collection than this one, I can't imagine the casual fan wanting this lacking set, even the order is strange. Of course the hardcore Bon Jovi fan likes about every one of their songs, maybe only 4 or 5 from the first album, but even I like most of the songs on 7800 degrees, and an essential would have to have Tokyo Road and Silent Night on it or I would not buy it. As far as Slippery, New Jersey...every song on those should be essential, maybe one or two left off...and that they are not on the greatest hits as this is known, is a major flaw. I'm thinking the ultimate Bon Jovi greatest hits set would have to have at least 4 songs each from the first two CD's, and then maybe 5 or 6 from Slippery, New Jersey, and Keep The Faith? That would fill out 2 Cd's I think and make a nice collection; better than this one for sure.

Hopefully fans new and old will get a better restrospective soon, this one is a nice start I guess, but I would highly recommend checking out their remastered catalog for more hits. They don't have many duds at all at least on their first 4 or 5 Cd's. The late 90's one's I don't know, perhaps an essential collection would contain some newer songs...but classic Bon Jovi is good enough for now.

A great Bon Jovi collection.......2007-06-09

For the most part, this is a great Bon Jovi collection. I do not equally enjoy every song on this album, but this collection includes nearly all of their early hits.

I love this CD, it's awesome, the songs are the best. Especially "Always", "Bed of Roses" and "I'll be there for you"

Decent Beginner's Set.......2007-05-22

For people who only know Bon Jovi from their "Have A Nice Day" and beyond years, "Cross Road" is a very good collection of tunes for them to check out. It gives the listener a solid set of their most popular tunes from their hair band heyday before they got all earthy/Mellencampy. This album is by no means a complete gathering of their greatest tunes. It leaves out at least two songs ("Living In Sin" and "Born To Be My Baby") and instead fills those holes with the dismal "Prayer '94," the forgettable "Always" and the harbinger of things to come, "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night." "Someday" is actually a very good modern roots rocker, but people don't buy greatest hits albums for the new songs. People buy this album for songs like the original "Livin' on a Prayer," "Wanted Dead Or Alive," "Bad Medicine," and "I'll Be There For You."

Lesser known tunes from their earliest offerings(particularly "Runaway") signal the beginnings of a great band to come. Later songs such as "Keep The Faith" and "Bed Of Roses" reveal a band in rock decline and quickly headed for the adult contemporary sound. In short, "Crossroad" gives the listener a pretty good take on how a band from Jersey made it big, leveled off, then headed for the sweet and steady success of light rock. Just to shake things up a bit, "Blaze Of Glory" from Jon Bon Jovi's solo "Young Guns II" project is included. Sadly, we do not get a sample from any of Richie Sambora's solo works. He really is a much better guitarist than he's given credit for, and it would have been nice for one of his tunes to be included in this collection.

I grew up during Bon Jovi's prime, and am proud to say that I own original cassette copies of "Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey." Although they weren't my favorite hair/glam/hard rock band (that was Def Leppard), they were still one of the best around at the time. Bon Jovi is no longer the band they once were, but for people who want to know where they came from, this is the album to pick up.

Jimmy Page was a top London studio guitarist before he got rich and famous as the musical leader of Led Zeppelin. The group's fourth--and arguably their finest--album is as much a tribute to his technique as a monument to his versatility. Page produced the album, co-wrote all eight songs, and played mandolin as well as all the guitars. The Essence of Rock and Roll.......2007-07-07

The original and definitive heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin made their mark in several other categories with their fourth album. The vocals of Robert Plant, guitar playing of Jimmy Page, and drumming of John Bonham are all the stuff of legend. John Paul Jones brings extra versatility and originality on bass, keyboard AND acoustic guitar. The songs:

Black Dog - blues-influenced (like a lot of earlier Zeppelin), loud and raunchy (in the best kind of way), some over-the-top vocal stylings
Rock And Roll - barn-burning blues and a great vehicle to show off one of the greatest rock drummers ever
The Battle Of Evermore - inventive art rock that proved that these guys were not only great rockers, but great artists as well
Stairway To Heaven - the definitive power ballad
Misty Mountain Hop - more barn-burning blues with monstrously huge guitar sounds and distinctive electric piano riff
Four Sticks - raucous art rock, using a crazy time signature and chord voicing that few bands other than Rush and Jethro Tull would dare to touch
Going To California - yes, they can do acoustic folk rock better than anyone else too

The production and engineering behind this album are the icing on the cake. Recording students are still studying and copying this stuff and trying to reproduce the "Bonham drum sound" to this day. The generous echoes and overdubs on Plant's vocals somehow never seem overdone or dated.

This is the amazing work of an amazing team of players and recording experts on their best days ever. Rock fans should be intimately familiar with this timeless and hugely influential CD.

brings back memories........2007-06-20

i know that a lot of people claim to have gone to the original woodstock concert, but i really did. and of all the great bands who played there, this was the best. i will never forget their great set. the lead singer and guitarist was a black man who played his guitar left-handed. the best song they played there was a great, great song about somebody named Purple Hayes, who could get into your mind. i think the title of the song was "Purple Hayes." unfortunately i have never been able to find that song on an album, but this album is great anyway. i just discovered it, and it is full of great songs. there is one song here called "Stairway to Heaven," which is about a stairway that goes up to Heaven. cool. and there is other neat stuff, too. get this record. you should. and if anyone knows what album "Purple Hayes" is on, please please please let me know.

This is the album that got me in to Zepp, and the first one I ever bought.
This ground breaking recording was Zepplin's #1 album, and if this would have been the only album they would released, I think they still would have had just as much of and impact on the world as they do now.


1. Black Dog- Strange name but awesome song, and one of the best riffs ever!!! 5/5


2. Rock And Roll- This song is exactilly what the name is; Rock And Roll. It's Zeppelin at their best, Jimmy Page's solo is simply amazing and fits with the song. Perfect riff, Perferct title, and a perfect solo make this song, well...perfect! 5/5

3. Battle of Evermore- It's always nice to slow it up a bit with some thing accustic, and "Battle Of Evermore" is that something accustic. This song really shows off Robert Plant's vocal range and fetures matiline. Bring it Back! 5/5

4. Stairway to Heaven- This is a song that needs no introduction, it's such a totamic peace of music, mainly because it is a constant climing song. It has some of the stragest lyrics of all time, and is known for having a backwards massage. Message or not it is still an amazing song, and Jimmy gives one of the best solos ever. 5/5

5. Misty Mountain Hop- This is the first Zeppelin song I ever heard and it still rocks. Greatest riff of all time? Maybe, but one thing that I know that everyone thinks at some point is, "What the hell is a Misty Mountain Hop?" The world may never know. 5/5

6. Four Sticks- This is a highly underratted song. It has tons of cool elements about it, Electric and accustic guitar parts, cool vocals, and great keyboard. Classic hard rock song. 5/5

7. Going To California- Another accustic song, nice and mellow. 4/5

8. When the Leeve Breaks- Best drum beat ever, provided by the one and only Bonzo. Heavy riff with some harmonica, great way to finish off a great album. 4.5/5

Simply the Best.......2007-06-04

I would like to start this review by stating that this is, arguably, the greatest rock album ever recorded. I don't see how it has an overall 4.5 star rating and it's all of the idiotic 1-star reviews that bring it down. I'm not calling it the best rock album of all time because I'm giving in to the hype about it, because I'm not. I own it and have listened through it over a hundred times so I am more than familiar with it, along with the rest of Zeppelin's music. This is simply the most complete, diverse and distinctive album ever. Not only are Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham gods of their instruments but they are likewise with song writing. The songs range from funky rock and roll (Black Dog, Rock and Roll) to groovy melodies (Misty Mountain Hop) to the more melodic ballads (Battle of Evermore, Going to California) to the epic heavy hitters on the album, Stairway and When the Levee Breaks. These four guys have mastered blues-inspired rock and roll and play it like no other. Jimmy Page is equally masterful and brilliant with the electric and acoustic guitars and his melodies are some of the most unconventional, odd time-signatured yet captivating ever. This is the quintissential hard rock album and it seems like all other albums should be measured up against this one.

I give every single song on this album a 10/10 with the exception of Four Sticks, which I would give a 9.5. Albums can't really rate much higher.

These are the gods of rock and this is their masterpiece. No person who claims to listen to rock should be without it. Don't pay any attention to the 1-star reviews, or the 2- and 3- star reviews, for that matter. They are ridiculous and written solely out of rebellion. Let them listen to their Fallout Boys and Nirvanas and Panic at the Discos. This is real music.

I am someone who usually does not give in to fads and trends just for the sake of doing it, but Led Zeppelin IV is a trend that I can't help but follow. It's simply the best..

Masterpiece, Robert's singing seems more Emotional and Inspiring than opera !
Black Dog and Going to California are my particular favorites on this CD. Sung with his needy , yearning, whining soul !

I can't really think of anything too specific to say about "Back in Black". One day, I bought the album, listened to it and had one of the biggest musical joyrides I can recall! Critics may despise AC/DC, but that's no reason to neglect this album! In fact, this qualifies not only as being one of the biggest-selling rock albums of all time, but one of the greatest. That being said, "Back in Black" is probably the first album people will think about whenever AC/DC is mentioned, and while they have a great selection in their catalogue, this is, no doubt, their finest hour.
From the guitar crunch of the Young brothers, from Malcolm's rock-solid rhythm playing to Angus's legendary riffs, licks and solos, this no doubt qualifies as a great guitar album. Then comes in the rhythm section of Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums, and while Phil Rudd may not have the same chops as John Bonham, Phil still makes his drums sound larger than life, which makes for a great cornerstone of the AC/DC groove. And then...Brian Johnson. Who would have thought after such a great lead singer as Bon Scott passed away, Brian Johnson would be able to fill in his role, and fill it in greatly, as well. His voice may take some getting used to, but he definitely sounds best on this album.
In addition, the remastering is excellent. The volume is up and there's no static or unneccesary noise that ruins the sound. After all, there's nothing as disappointing as hearing a great song like it was recorded a mile away! Anyway, this album is just flat-out excellent for those who dig such a sound. Ten songs at a little over forty minutes, and a cross between a hard-rock crunch and an old-school groove for each song, AC/DC did just about everything they could right on this album.
As a summary, this album will make you forget your problems, imagine these guys on stage at night in a big, sold-out arena, playing these rockers loudly and proudly, and, of course, prove to be a testament of time and rock and roll. And remember, take no pressure from the critics. Be your own person! Rock out and feel good about it! And remember, "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it just makes good, good sense!" Peace!

One of the best CDs ever...REMASTERED.......2007-06-27

I owned an original copy of Back in Black and played it constantly. It's an ideal CD for road trips and just incredible rock from beginning to end. I didn't think anything could possibly improve it until I heard the remastered version. Suddenly the bass comes out more, the drums are even more in your face, the vocals are clearer, it just ROCKS even more. There are plenty of bad remasters out there of various classic albums, but thankfully, this is not one of them.

The rebirth of AC/DC .......2007-05-16

Hands down the best AC/DC CD. This is the cream of the crop, and it doesn't get any better than this. To this day, each song rocks loud and hard, and vocalist Brian Johnson was never better. A must for any hard rock collection, your ears will be bleeding.

Of course, In my humble opinion, this album is in my Top Ten of all-time. It rocks, it's bluesy,crushing, sneering and has that "I'm badder than you attitude." And it's just a lot of FUN. Really, what more could you want in a Rock album? Get your hands on this bad boy!!!

Back In Black again.......2007-04-12

This is one of the best albums of all time and if you don't believe me check any registered music critic's top 100 list and you'll see it there somewhere. Not only is it a fun album and one that brings constant memories of high school flooding back to me; it really is a very well put together record. Coming off the death of lead singer Bon Scott, the Young boys and their co-horts hopped onto the Brian Johnson wagon and headed into the studio. With the fists to the air and groin to the ground "You Shook Me All Night Long" this album was off and running all over the world. The sound on the remaster is excellant and so are the liner notes some of which make you really listen to the album. The mixture of old blues and hard rock is more evident than I originally had even thought of and just the hard rocking fun of the title track, the grinding "Rock & Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" and "Giving The Dog A Bone" is just plain exciting. If you haven't heard it in a while I highly suggest you throw that old cassette into the boom box and give it another go - or better yet get this remaster, I know you want it.
