Album Description

First spied in 1974 on the Whistle Test with his guitar on his lap moaning and yelling, fretting the chords with his thumb Kevin caused a stir at my school on a par with Alvin Stardust's dramatic TOTP debut. Apart from a slew of great Reggae albums, Kevin's Millionaires And Teddy Bears and Babble were the only thing worth nicking out of the Virgin Records press office when we were briefly label-mates back in 1979. John Lydon once confessed to pilfering from his arsenal of crazed squawks and wails and my pal John Hyatt unashamedly channeled Kevin for The Three Johns. In 1990 The Mekons covered his song Having A Party, a unsubtle stab at Virgin's owner (reportedly a huge Coyne fan to this day) that mirrored our sorry situation on A&M at the time. One night at the Duchess Of York in Leeds I handed him a copy and he looked a bit baffled.

For a man who turned down the job as Jim Morrison's replacement in The Doors, was billed as the English Beefheart and refused to write lyrics for Tubular Bells, Kevin Coyne spent a remarkably long, yet fruitful, time in the rock wilderness. Brutally neglected in Britain and never even on the radar in the USA he made his home in Southern Germany where he found love and respect and created wonderful artwork, books and albums that are out there just waiting to be discovered.

Advance ticket sales were so bad for his last Chicago show I had to beg, bribe and threaten people to turn up. Kevin was charming, rude and hilarious, vogue-ing for the crowd like some mad medieval friar while ad-libbing whole songs with masterful ease and precision. The crowd was amazed (Kevin was amazing) and I got phone calls & e-mails for days from grateful friends I'd bullied into coming. Paul Morley predicted a Kevin Coyne revival earlier this year but maybe in death he's still to willful, wild and cantankerous for your average conservative rock fan.

4 out of 5 stars Final Coyne in vintage form.......2005-12-04

I was terribly saddened by Coyne's death last year and had assumed the vaults were emtpy, so it was a great and pleasant surprise to find this disc. Even more rewarding is that the disc is so strong. If it isn't up to his peak records (Marjorie Razorblade, Bursting Bubbles), it is certainly in the second tier.

The music is somewhere between his rocking Siren-era R&B and the stripped-down elegance of his bands with Brain Godding in the early 80's. Langford and his band do Coyne proud, filling in backgrounds and understated (one would never say "tastefull" when talking Coyne) but solid support. The Hammond organ is particularly nice on several tracks.

Maybe the best part is hearing Coyne so obviously having fun, both on the studio and live tracks. Both versions of "Money Like Water" are a hoot and if his self-mocking is gentler here (say, on "Happy Island Girl" or even the live version of "Fat Girl") than in the past, I hope that translated into a happier frame of mind in his last years, too.

I doubt this disc will have much chance to fall into the hands of anyone who isn't already aware of this incrdible and unique man. A pity, really, as this would make a pretty good introduction. But if you are reading this your are probably an appreciater, so by all means - buy it and enjoy it. This is probably it, now, and I am pleased to report that what may be the last Coyne we can savor is a fitting cap to his amazing career.

Thank you, Mr. Langford, for recording this and letting the rest of us share it.

Album Description

Arrr, mateys! The brave lads of the Toucan Pirates return from their third voyage to Ireland, Scotland, England & the Shetland Isles with another boatload of musical gems.

Each salty tune has been recovered from the holds of many a sunken treasure galleon, or discovered on faraway West Indian islands using dusty old treasure maps.

The sequel to Sea Changes of the Toucan Pirates, this rollicking album contains authentically piratical instrumentals played on Concertina, Tin Whistle, Irish Bouzouki, Tenor Banjo and Button Accordion.

The Toucan Pirates add in a treasure chest of pirate sound effects to heighten the adventure. There's even a West Indian steel drum, for that "Pirates of the Caribbean" flavor! Kids love it!

The Toucan Pirates are a great little pirate band, and BURIED TREASURE is one of their best. If you are planning a pirate party for your young ones (and who wouldn't want to dress her or his kids up with buckles, sashes, and eyepatches?), or even yourself (and who doesn't want to dress up in buckles...) then this could be your soundtrack. A mix of traditional Irish jigs and reels, as well as a few slower tunes, the music is punctuated with some delightful pirate sounds, and ends with a nice rendition of "Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest," probably the most piratey of all the songs.

This "Buried Treasure" belongs in your booty! Top-notch all the way!

4 out of 5 stars Great for kids or museums. Not for a pirate party for grownups........2006-06-28

The musicianship on this CD is quite nice, as is the selection of songs. The Toucan Pirates have certainly done their homework in terms of researching the traditional music of the British Isles and playing it on period instruments, along with some good background sound effects, movie samples, and a hint of Caribbean steel drums. If you're looking for pirate music for an exhibit on pirates or are having a pirate party for kids, this is the perfect CD for you. It's reasonably lively and the pacing changes enough to keep it interesting as background music.

If, however, you are an adult who is going to have a pirate party for adults (poker, drinking, etc.) then this CD may be a bit plodding and tame for you. For that purpose, I would instead recommend bands like The Pogues (particularly about half the tracks on "If I should Fall From Grace with God") and select cuts from Flogging Molly, Tears for Beers, The Chieftains, and The Dubliners.

This is actually a very good CD, just not for the wild Pirate Party I'm planning on thowing! My favorite cut is the Garryowen, which still makes my hair stand on end because of my associations of it with poignant scenes from the movie, "Little Big Man," where it's played by General Custer's band as they march into battle.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Don't be confused with the other "Buried Treasure" release!.......2007-06-17

As my title for this review states, at the outset I would like to warn readers and potential buyers of this record what they're actually in for. "Buried Treasure" (2005/6) was originally released as a DOUBLE disc of Sailor recordings previously not available on vinyl or cd. This excellent collection, contained songs spanning the band's 30 years existence, including songs from the pre Sailor period, the Kajanus/Pickett album "Hi Ho Silver", songs from the unreleased 7th Sailor album "Tv Land",songs from the band before they reunited in 1989, and then some later recordings not released on cd. So in effect this release was truly a collection of rarities. It should be added that this release was a limited one on a different music label - Belerion. THIS 2007 "BURIED TREASURE", with the same cover, bears no resemblance to the anthology I just referred to. IT IS just another rehash of the bands "Greatist Hits" - previously rehashed under various guises. Whilst for some who have no connection with Sailor and would like to sample their work, it might prove to be an ideal introduction, for the rest of us more familiar with their work it's just more of the same. It's not that the tracks selected are terrible, they aren't, in fact they're not too bad as fas as Sailor compilations go. There is even the bonus of 5 tracks being added from the long deleted "Dressed For Drowning" album, which for me is the sole reason for buying it. The previously unreleased on cd single "Don't Send Flowers" is worth it just for my collection.
All that aside, there's nothing special about this collection. I might add the 2005 German complilation, from memory titled "Down By The Docks: Best of Sailor" or something similar, is the definitive collection of Sailor's music covering the full 30 years of recordings, including songs from all albums, which this cd doesn't (there are no songs included from the "Checkpoint" (1977) album). It might be worth seeking out that recording rather than being confused and disappointed with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Dave searches for the perfect woman.......2004-05-04

I heard the Waco Brothers a few years ago on college radio in RI and got some of their CDs from the Bloodshot site and really liked them BUT this record blows my freakin' lid off. They've teamed up with Uncle Dave, some dude they used to hang out with in DC back in the day and he's come up with all these sensitive wordy country ballads and neanderthal rock anthems about his mid-life crisis. Hilarious stuff. He dreams up a fantasy woman for his future Uncle Dave wife and by the end of the album realizes she has to be killed before he can be free or happy or both. But it's OK 'cos she's not real, I geuss. The Wacos never sounded better and the rocking never stops. Uncle Dave has one of those weird non-singer story-teller voices that creeps up on you and gets in your skull! Perfect listening for unemployable single drunks staring down the barrel at 50... Where Does Love Go When It's Gone could be a hit for the Mavericks or Dwight.

    Album Description

Hey, collectors-follow us on an amazing 2 CD journey through the dim recesses of the Warner-Elektra-Atlantic vaults and their associated (Valiant, Reprise, Atco) labels, as we bring you 40 tracks from the '60s that you just won't believe are all in one place on one collection! Compiled and annotated by the august Bob Hyde, Buried Treasure starts in 1958 with the seventh record Warner Bros. ever made, Troyce Key's rockabilly classic Baby Please Don't Go, and deals one rare gem after another in chronological order in stereo whenever possible (with some few surprises as well)! This even includes the impossible to find Long John Baldrey's Don't Try To Lay No Boogie-Woogie On The King Of Rock & Roll. 2 CD's in a slimline jewelbox.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great concept but uneven in execution.......2003-01-19

With all the labels that are now under the WEA umbrella, there is an almost incomprehendable volume of material in the vaults to be mined, much of which has not seen the light of day in the digital era. This two-CD collection from Collectors' Choice attempts to bring to the buying public their choice of "lost gems" of WEA's artists' music from the 60s. The title implies a collection of tunes not usually found in other reissues. While this is accomplished to some extent, the approach to track selection is all over the place. Even the liner notes acknowledge a "shotgun" approach to the track selection. For some artists, their biggest and well-known hit is presented when these are not infrequently available elsewhere, yet their other lesser-known tunes have been overlooked. In this vein are Joannie Sommers's "Johnny Get Angry", the Marketts' "Out of Limits" and "Let's Go" from the Routers. In a contradictory approach, there are three tracks from the Association, none of which were charting singles. And some of the biggest stars of the label are not represented at all such as the Everly Brothers, Petula Clark, the Drifters, Peter, Paul and Mary and many, many others although this is explained as not necessary as these artists are well represented elsewhere. Seeming more in keeping with the purpose here is the appearance of such rarities as Mel Torme's only top-100 charting single "Comin' Home Baby", Shelby Flint's only other charter "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Here's To You" from Hamilton Camp, Rhinoceros' "Apricot Brandy" and Fats Domino's only Reprise hit, "Lady Madonna". All told, among the 40 tracks are 25 top-100 hits, nine of which are one-hit wonders. Overall, while the repertoire seems a bit skewed, this piece contains a lot of interesting, indeed "gems" from the 60s and is appealing to both the casual listener and serious collector. Sound quality is competent overall with many cuts (disc 1, tracks 3,4,8,9,11,13-16; disc 2, tracks 1,2,8-12,14-19) in stereo. Completing the package is a 12-page liner notes booklet with a refreshingly honest approach to the contents and backround on the artists covered. While a valuable piece in itself, considering the enormity of the WEA vaults, this is merely a tease and the music collector would hope that there will be further volumes to continue where this set leaves off.

3 out of 5 stars Great idea with variable result.......2001-09-30

This is the kind of collection which keeps me collecting and searching for space in my one-bedroom apartment. As there is too much emphasis on Greatest Hits, Number Ones, and Golden Oldies, which means many excellent chartworthy records fell by the wayside, releases like "Buried Treasure" loom large for the student of pop history. There are forty songs from Warner Bros., Atlantic, Valiant, et al., which made either made alot, or some, or *no* noise commercially and (to me) about ten are worth hearing more than twice, including "Angel On My Shoulder" and "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" by folk singer Shelby Flint, "Good Good Lovin'" by the Blossoms, "Lady Madonna" by Fats Domino, "Apricot Brandy" by Rhinoceros, "Freedom Blues" by Little Richard [rec. probably in '69, *not* '71 as per. liner notes], and the long version of "Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie On The King Of Rock And Roll" by Long John Baldry. What I find disturbing is that The Association has three tracks here, The Beefeaters have two, and Fats and Richard have but *one* each! The Fat Man has about fifteen never reisssued Warner Bros. tracks and The Architect/Emancipator/Quasar has about fifteen *never released* tracks from Warner Bros./Reprise, including a complete album. I hope the company considers a "Buried Treasure, Vol. 2 - the '70s" with Fats' "New Orleans Ain't The Same" and Richards' "Burning Up With Love", a tune promo'd on TV in '72 but not issued.

    Album Description

Having studiously avoided each other for most of the 90s these two large predators of the underground rock scene made a simple choice between escalating hostilities spiraling inevitably into mutual annihilation and the prospect of a relaxing week getting to know each other round at Sally Timms' apartment with a bunch of cool looking antique mikes and a steam powered pro-tools system.

The resulting recording session saw Sir Dickie and Fanglord swapping instruments, lyrics and outer garments to produce a collection of songs that shift the goalposts and subvert all the neat genre boundaries that have differentiated their sorry careers in the past. Sir Dark Invader Vs. The Fanglord is full of haunting folkish melodies and intermittent bursts of noisy art rock. Assistance is meted out by Pine Valley Cosmonaut John Rice (on guitar & mandolin) and Steve Goulding on occasional drum-kit.

4 out of 5 stars If you like retro 1980's punk.......2006-08-08

Considering the original studio version is gone this is not too bad. Done at Metro in Chicago where I live it's worth to put in your collection. Metro is not designed as a recording studio setting just a small club but they did an OK job.

    5 out of 5 stars the devil's music.......2004-11-01

"That song was written by the devil, who invented punk rock."

So speaks Jon Langord, one of three. I saw the Johns on this tour when they were in Mpls and was instantly hooked. This is what it sounded like. They made 5 records, one cassette-tape-only, tons of singles and eps, all out of print, all worth owning.

Guitar, slide guitar, bass, drum machine, beer by the gallon, international socialism, and a tremulous, yoedeling Johnny Rotten. And between-song wisecracks that are as funny as ever! That's punk rock: it's messy, noisy, funny, silly, serious, hopelessly optimistic and pissed off at the same time.

This is not hi-fi. But it's rock and roll to be reckoned with.

    Jonboy, when's the reunion tour?
