A poll-winning fiddler since her teens, Alison Krauss was an established bluegrass star when her label persuaded her to step out from her usual projects with Union Station, her crack band, and sanction this compilation of various band and solo guest performances. The ploy worked, yielding a wonderful, odds-beating crossover hit with Krauss's cover of "Baby, Now That I've Found You," a carousing late-'60s pop chant transformed into a delicate, vulnerable declaration of love. Focusing on Krauss's lovely, yearning soprano, the track elevated the musician above her resolutely democratic role in her quintet, catapulting Krauss to the biggest bluegrass success story in over 30 years. Krauss has stayed true to her bluegrass roots, as well as to Union Station, but this cross-section of contemporary bluegrass songs, joyous gospel, and canny rock covers testifies to the young artist's luminous appeal. --Sam Sutherland

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

4 out of 5 stars A good Hank Jr. CD.......2007-06-03

For the serious Hank Williams Jr. fan, this CD has little to recommend it. Reading the reviews will catalog all their objections, valid or not. I am not a big fan but like his work and enjoy hearing his songs now and again. For me, this is an excellent buy. There are at least five must have hits coupled with a strong selection of standards, make this a good buy. The title song is excellent and could become his newest must have song.

I am not enough of a fan to think Hank Jr. can do a great CD, however this is very enjoyable. When you want to hear his style of country, this is the CD to have.

1 out of 5 stars thats how they do it in dixie.......2007-06-02

i was happy with the album especially the title song as i like country music probably the most this album is one of the better ones i've listened to as i live in australia the only way i can keep up with current american artists is by watching the Country music channel on Foxtel, and i have only recently seen and heard Hank Williams jr on this channel but i am impressed with his music and as i only have two of his albums at the moment i am sure in the future i will purchase more at the moment both albums are good this is the better of the two.

5 out of 5 stars Not Bad for a Collection.......2006-11-07

Well the two new songs are Awesome... How they do it in Dixie and Stirrin it up. The other songs are good too. If you are a die hard Bocephus Fan you already have these albums but when it's a new album it's a gotta have no matter what! It has the classic good songs from Hank Jr and it would be great for new Fans.

5 out of 5 stars It's not that bad........2006-07-11

O.K. Maybe they should have left off "The Essential Collection", and just kept the main title. But, if you count all of the hits ole Bocephus has had in the past. It would be down right impossible to fit them all on 1 CD (unless it's an MP3 format). If you did we would be calling it a boxset...Not, The Essentials. Being a longtime member of the Hank Williams Jr Fan Club, this collection of past hits compliments this CD. Along with the two new recordings titled, "That's How They Do It In Dixie" with a little help from his newest country friends Big & Rich, a very talented Gretchen Wilson and Van Zant. The second entry, "Stirrin' It Up" Is not too shabby in it's own right. Myself I woulda like to have seen "If The South Woulda Won" and "If It Will, It Will" added to this collection. But, the hits that appear on this one is good enough. Like old ThunderHead Hawkins would say "I Ain't Going Peacefully".

3 out of 5 stars Only 12 Tracks? This Falls Wa-a-a-y Short of 'Essential'.......2006-06-28

Hank Williams Jr deserves a thorough career-spanning single-disc anthology. Unfortunately, THAT'S HOW THEY DO IT IN DIXIE: THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION ain't it.

Don't get me wrong. Williams is one of the great outlaw country artists. I first got hooked on his mid-Eighties albums like BORN TO BOOGIE and MONTANA CAFE.

What ESSENTIAL COLLECTION does is cherry pick a handful of tracks from GREATEST HITS, Vol. 1-3 (all still in print) and then adds two new tracks: The title track (which features Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, and Van Zant) and "Stirrin' It Up." There are just too many missing tracks to qualify this as "essential." At only 12 tracks and a little over 40 minutes, fans deserve more than this before spending their hard-earned money. A better purchase (although more expensive) is Curb's 2000 excellent 3-CD set THE BOCEPHUS BOX. At 65 tracks, it certainly provides more bang for your buck.

Album Description

If you've never heard of Todd Snider, then That Was Me: Todd Snider 1994-1998 is an introduction. If you're already a fan, then his first compilation, following seven critically acclaimed albums, is a tribute to the wry, honest, brutal and yet funny Snider. Featuring 17 tracks culled from his first three albums plus a previously unreleased cover of Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville"--all digitally remastered from the original master tapes--That Was Me was created with Snider's full participation and includes his own liner notes and detailed songography.

An iconoclastic hero of alt-country, Americana, college radio and modern folk, Snider's influences are the likes of Randy Newman, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Born in Portland, OR, he moved to Santa Rosa, CA, after high school and learned to play the harmonica. His brother, living in Austin, TX, figured Todd might find a job in a band there so he sent him a plane ticket. After seeing Jerry Jeff play in a local bar, Snider indeed decided that was what he wanted to do with his life.

During a mid-'80s stint in Memphis where he established a residency at the Daily Planet club, he was discovered by Keith Sykes, a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. John Prine then hired Snider as an assistant and eventually had him open shows. When Buffett heard Snider's demos, he signed him to his MCA imprint Margaritaville Records. His debut album, 1994's Songs for the Daily Planet, starred "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" as well as "Alright Guy," "Trouble," "You Think You Know Somebody," "Easy Money" and "That Was Me."

For 1996's Step Right Up, Snider and his band, the Nervous Wrecks, continued blending bluegrass, blues, folk-rock and country-rock to forge their own distinctive sound. That Was Me reprises its "Enough," "Hey Hey," "Moon Dawg's Tavern," "Horseshoe Lake," "Tension," "Better Than Ever Blues (Part Two)," "Late Last Night" and "Side Show Blues." 1998's Viva Satellite contributes "Can't Complain," "Guaranteed" and "Doublewide Blues." Snider has since issued four albums on Prine's indie Oh Boy Records, including 2004's East Nashville Skyline, and he continues to tour across the country.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars He's an Allright Guy.......2007-02-02

This is a nice collection of songs and styles. I really like all of it. It is my first Todd Snider album but it won't be my last!

4 out of 5 stars Todd Snider - That Was Me.......2006-08-24

Todd Snider is a great folky singer/songwriter hippie who sounds like he'd have been perfect for the 1960's. He's definitely unique in today's music scene. He writes really good songs and this CD gives a nice brief overview of some of his best songs over the 5 years. And at a great price too!

For the most part, these are good roots-y Americana folk/country songs for the modern times. He's hilarious as far as writers go. If he were an author, he'd be one of those quirky guys who have a cult following. I enjoyed most of the songs on here a lot. There were only one or two which I didn't care for - and that's pretty good at 18 songs.

If you like cool, unique, weird, talented singer/songwriters, Todd Snider's the guy for you. This is a good introduction to some of his earlier stuff. I would definitely recommend picking up his more recent stuff too.

4 out of 5 stars Just a clarification..........2006-04-06

Another reviewer complained that this wasn't really "the best of" Todd Snider's work, since it doesn't include songs such as "Vinyl Records" and "Statistician's Blues," et al. I agree that those are great songs, but they were released on John Prine's independently owned Oh Boy! label, not on the MCA-Universal mega-conglomerate, which is the company that put out this particular collection. Yeah, it would be great to have all of Snider's "best" work on one collection, but I for one am rather glad that Universal doesn't own Oh Boy! so that that is not possible... But if you want to check out Snider's early work, from the albums he put out in the mid-to-late 1990s, this is a fine single-CD option.

3 out of 5 stars NOT the very best of collection.......2005-11-17

If you are like me, any artist that you really really love, chances are you have every cd/album that this artist ever realeased. And say 10 years or so down the road, this artist comes out with a "Best of" or "greatest hits" cd. You are curious to see what selections were put on it, and except for the one or two cover songs, or maybe a NEW song,(they do that in the hopes of that big fan will buy it for that one or two songs he/she may not have)you say to yourself "THAT IS NOT THE BEST OF" ! Well, when I saw Todd's selections on his "BEST OF CD", I was disapointed. Just to name a few songs that were left off are as follows: "I believe"-"broke"-"vinyl records"-"beer run"-"alot more"-"new connection"-"statistician's blues"- and one that I found online was a song he did called "Plastic girl". If you can find that one or any of the above mentioned songs you will see what I mean. If you like todd's music, don't skimp on this guy. Get all his cd's, you won't ever regret it. Thanks for listening.

4 out of 5 stars Good Summary Of Old Stuff But Should Have More New Stuff For Long Time Fans.......2005-10-19

I significantly agree with the previous review. If you've bought Todd Snider's later CDs, this would be a good introduction to his earlier material (especially since it contains cuts from his "Viva Satellite" CD which is hard to find). Of course, I would suggest that you get his "Songs From the Daily Planet" CD as that is a classic. This CD contains songs from his first three CDs plus a previously unreleased cover version of Jimmy Buffett's "Margartaville" (sung significantly different than how the Parrothead does it).

I'm only disappointed because the above cover version is the only new thing for the fans who have all of his CDs. I'm sure there had to be some more unreleased material out there that could have been added as Todd is known for his cover versions in his live shows. Even if it meant removing a studio track or two, I think you could have a perfect mix of introducing newbies while satisfying the "oldbies".

Another nit is that the liner notes are extremely hard to read that I actually scanned a few of the pages to blow them up to read (no joke). But all-in-all, it is a decent purchase to make.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Just Really Great Music.......2007-03-30

This CD is probably one of the best of the NOW series because it features some really good songs. Here's a track-by-track review:

1. Gwen Stefani-Hollaback Girl: This is an okay hook, but that "bananas"
part is weird and the bleeping gets annoying. It was overplayed. B-

2. Will Smith-Switch: Nice to see Will make a comeback and this is the
perfect comeback single, with a terrific hook. A-

3. Amerie-1 Thing: The beat is the only thing that saves this otherwise
lackluster Amerie tune. C+

4. Ciara feat. Ludacris-Oh: This was overplayed, but Luda is awesome and
the hook is better than the one on "Goodies". B

5. Bobby Valentino-Slow Down: I'm not much for ballads, but this is an
okay song, pretty average at best. C

6. Eminem-Mockingbird: I like Eminem's slower songs and this is pretty good. The lyrics are very touching. A

7. Brooke Valentine-Girlfight: This was overplayed, but it has a good hook. Lil Jon is annoying, though. B

8. Destiny's Child-Girl: This is better than "Cater 2 U", but not
"Soldier". It's an okay song(for Destiny's Child). C

9. Shakira-La Tortura: Shakira's voice bothers me, but the beat is okay,
I guess. A little simplistic. So-so. B-

10. Baby Bash feat. Akon-Baby I'm Back: Some of this guy's other material
is alright, but this is just a smug, stupid song. C-

11. Frankie J-How To Deal: I don't like ballads and I hate this. F

12. John Legend-Ordinary People: This is an okay song, since it has
meaningful lyrics and the piano is good. B+

13. Anna Nalick-Breathe(2 AM): This is an okay song. That's all I can really say about it. B-

14. Keith Urban-Making Memories Of Us: I hate wuss country. F

15. Backstreet Boys-Incomplete: The beginning hinted at something better, but this just evolved into a sapfest. D

16. 3 Doors Down-Let Me Go: This is an okay rock song. A little whiney, but what 3 Doors Down song isn't? A-

17. Relient K-Be My Escape: A little bad, but I'll still give it a decent
rating. B

18. The Killers-Mr. Brightside: I really like this song a lot. It has a good new wave beat. A

19. Coldplay-Speed Of Sound: Okay, this was overplayed, but I still like it a lot because it's a good Coldplay song. A+

20. Gorillaz-Feel Good Inc.: Another of my favourites. This song is just plain addictive. A+

Overall, this is one of the better NOW entries and if you're going to invest your money into just one of these CDs, I would choose this.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2006-12-26

Well, I thought that this CD is going to be perfect for my cousin with a CD player for christmas. Everything about it was perfect but one thing. After she opened it we thought we should test it to see if the CD player worked. The CD player did work but while we where listining to it I noticed that this is a kids CD and it was a little bad for children because it was unapproriate for childeren. I think it sould be for an older age. But it is still a great CD!

4 out of 5 stars Vol. 19.......2006-07-19

Backstreet returns and no one cares, that's probably due to the fact that 'Incomplete' is kinda crappy. Pop music has evolved boys, so you can't put out a track that sounds like it was ripped from your debut b-sides! Anyways, that said there are some other tracks here to beware of. When I first heard 'How To Deal' by Frankie J. I really liked it and then I realized it was because I recognized the beat...it's the same beat to 'Burn' by Usher and I was like, what a loser...He has to steel the beats from a popular song that was JUST released! Anyways, 'Hollaback Girl' is just stupid, and yes it's edited anyways so don't bother. Not a fan of 'Switch', Will should stick to acting, he's good at that.

Highlights include Brooke Valentine's 'Girlfight' which takes the crown for best track here...love it and can't ever get enough of it. As with Amerie's '1 Thing' which is also a great track, probably her best. Dig Ciara's 'Oh' but could live without Eminem's 'Mockingbird'...he's lost a lot since '8 Mile'.

Destiny's Child suffer, or cause us to suffer, but Shakira shows us how it's done and gives us a great song here. Akon saves Baby Bash from serving up another crappy song, and yes, other than Akons vocals this song is crappy, but I like his voice so I'll listen to it. John Legend does brilliantly yet again with 'Ordinary People'. The piano is beautiful and the lyrics are so heartfelt and original...I love it.

I really like Anna Nalick's 'Breathe'...it's soft and calm and different so that's welcome. The Killers and Coldplay deliver good songs, Coldplay's isn't perfect but it's good. Gorillaz also deliver here, 'Feel Good Inc.' is a great song and serves as a perfect closing track for the album. All in all it's good, falters a bit but still a decent offering and a nice addition to your growing CD collection.

4 out of 5 stars Now 19.......2006-03-16

This cd is cool, but I hate how they changed the first song like that.

4 out of 5 stars Contains some of the best songs of 2005!.......2006-02-03

Most NOW compilations are hit and miss affairs (more often miss than hit), but NOW 19 has the distinction of having four of the best songs of 2005, regardless of your taste in music. Obviously, "Hollaback Girl" was unavoidable in 2005, and it had the added benefit of teaching everyone how to spell "Bananas." The second song of note was "1 Thing" by Amerie. Rich Harrison sampled the most amazing drum break of the year from The Meters and it elevated this song above so much other R&B. John Legend's "Ordinary People" was excellent in its simple piano and real life lyrics about relationships. And finally, the song of the year, whether you're tired of it or not, had to be "Feel Good, Inc." by the Gorillaz. It combined so many different elements into absolute musical perfection. These four songs, plus a few good others, make NOW 19 an essential purchase for anyone trying to feel the pulse of music in 2005.

Amazon.com essential recording

At 14, child prodigy Alison Krauss signed to Rounder records, wooing critics and beguiling both bluegrass and country stalwarts with her nimble-fingered champion fiddling and inimitable otherworldly soprano. Though 1995's Now That I've Found You is credited as her mainstream breakthrough, 1990's I've Got That Old Feeling bridges her remarkable career into adulthood, capturing the public's interest in bluegrass. Barely past the threshold of womanhood, Krauss possesses musical agility far beyond her years, as well as the soft sweetness of the girlhood blush. The efficacy with which she and her band approach each song is marrow deep and tenderly precise, be it on the banjo rave-up "Will You Be Leaving" or the multi-string delay-beat of "Winter of a Broken Heart." Witness to the promise of a stellar future is the Floyd Cramer-esque piano-led "Tonight I'll Be Lonely Too," in which Krauss shines like the sun, her splendidly emotive tone and phrasing somewhat reminiscent of a young Dolly Parton. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of the early years.......2006-07-12

If you just stumbled across this album and gave it a listen, you might be forgiven for thinking that it's a greatest hits CD. At this point, AK already had a couple of albums under her belt, and it shows. The music is straight bluegrass and country, you won't find any of the later pop infusions (which is fine music itself!), and the song selection is first rate. The instrumentalists are in fine form, and her voice still has most of that thin, reedy quality that you associate with bluegrass. But if you listen, it's just beginning to warm up some and lose that young-girl quality ...

So if you're already an AKUS fan, you can scoop this one up and enjoy every lick! And if not, this is as good a place as any to test the waters.

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Queen Alison Krauss Reigns on this Recording.......2004-06-26

On her 3rd CD Alison Krauss does not break stride. "I've Got That Old Feeling" is chock-a-block FULL of the beautiful ballads that have made her famous with her angelically emotive voice, but it is also perhaps the best showcase for her ability to perform more up-tempo pieces, such as "Dark Skies" and "Will You Be Leaving?" The supporting cast here performs perfectly.

How many albums do you have that have perhaps a few good songs on it, but just as many songs that are just filler - instantly forgettable and barely listenable? This is a CD with NO filler. Every cut is a "keeper" and I could just listen to the whole thing back to back over and over again.

Alison Krauss is a national treasure, and this recording is one reason why.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant early album full of great songs.......2003-12-15

Alison Krauss has done much to popularise bluegrass in recent years. Her early recordings were pure bluegrass - this (from 1990) might just be the best album of that phase of her career, although they are all brilliant and it's hard to choose a particular favorite. Her more recent albums have included other influences but I enjoy those too, in a different way.

There are no really famous songs on this album, but the quality of all the songs is high. Sidney Cox (of the Cox family, a noted bluegrass group with which Alison recorded a gospel album) wrote four songs including the title track (a bright, upbeat song) and Tonight I'll be lonely too (an outstanding ballad). Other favorites of mine include Steel rails (a brilliant train song), Endless highway, Will you be leaving and One good reason, but there are so many great songs here and it may be that your favorite is one I haven't mentioned. The overall feel of the album is bright and upbeat.

If you are unfamiliar with Alison's early music, I recommend that you buy Now that I've found you - A collection, which I've already reviewed. That includes one track from each of her early albums, plus tracks not available on any of her other albums so far. If you have that collection and you are looking for more of Alison's early music, you will enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Forever a Classic.......2003-02-27

Alison Krauss is by far my favorite artist. Getting this CD has been a treat. She brings such flavor to bluegrass like no other artist. Not only is her voice that brings spirit, but her violin playing has emotions and feeling. Alison and Union Station's mixtures of songs such as ballads and up beat toe tapping Blue grass shows the range of talent this lady and group has. I hope they continue to produce this special music. I just have one more CD to buy and I have all her CD...which are getting quite worn.

3 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2003-01-21

This CD is okay, but lacking the depth I tend to enjoy. Something about the songs is a little too sing-songy and Allison's voice actually grates on me if I'm in the wrong mood. I thought I'd try her out, but she's just not my cup of tea. For the record, I bought Dolly Parton's Little Sparrow at about the same time, and I'm enjoying that immensely.

Amazon.com

Those who enjoy the adventurous eclecticism of traditional Top 40 radio should welcome this diverse, 20-track compilation of some of 2004's most memorable hits. Anchored by U2's energetic return to roots, "Vertigo" and Gwen Stefani's rock-of-the-80's-channeling solo breakthrough "What Are You Waiting For," it goes on to dish up everything from the teeny-pop angst of Lindsey Lohan's "Rumors" to the further adventures of Mr. Dizzle, Snoop Dogg himselfizzle (with an assist from Pharrell), on the typically laidback groove of "Drop It Like It's Hot" and the unlikely, country-urban fusing duet of Nelly and Tim McGraw on "Over and Over." The collection continues that contemporary R&B bent via hits like Omarion's "O," Ashanti's "Only U" and John Legend's "Used to Love U." Yet it also makes room for performances as disparate as Howie Day's emotive, adult-alternative standout "Collide," Hoobastank's slick Cali-pop, the modern rock of Chevelle and Three Days Grace and Lenny Kravitz chunky-rhythmed "Lady." Frickin' A serves up a faithful cover of Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" that preserves the infectious schlock-charm of the 80's original, while the spunky pop-punk of Canadian Skye Sweetnam's "Tangled Up in Me" and Australian Keith Urban's '04 contempo-country standout "You're My Better Half" close the anthology out on a upbeat, international note. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Vol. 18.......2006-07-19

'Now! 18' seems to have picked up the pace a bit, delivering quite a bit of great tracks. 2004 must have been a good year, and I'm pleased to say that the majority of this album shows that is true. Starting with U2's smash hit 'Vertigo' which made me a believer again. Gwen also spices things up with her first solo track, and even though I don't get the split beings that her songs all sound as if they were on a No Doubt album, she still is amazing. Lindsay makes her debut, and 'Rumors' while not as good as some of her other tracks it's still a decent song, good club song.

Speaking of good club songs, um, let me just say that Ashanti kicks @$$ and her song 'Only U' is no exception, and serves as her best song yet. She blazes the comp, beating out Destiny's Child (although 'Soldier' is a great song) and Lindsay for best female vocal track.

Chingy is strong with 'Balla Baby' and Nelly and Tim McGraw are perfect together (I love anything Tim touches) but it's Snoop and Pharell who take the crown for best rap song period. 'Drop it like it's Hot' is brilliant and never gets old!

Omarion leaves B2K for better things, and 'O', even though it's total cliche, is actually really really good. The vibe, the beats and even his voice are all top notch here. Much better than Frankie J's weak 'Obsession'.

The rock selection is decent. Three Days Grace again make a lasting impression, but Chevelle takes the crown for best rock track here, for 'Vitamin R' is freakin' awesome! Skye Sweetnam delivers a nice track, and even though I'm not a huge fan of 'My Better Half' I still gave groove to it every once in a while. The best track though by far is John Legends 'Used to Love U' which is just brilliant in everyway. His voice is silky smooth and the lyrics are amazing. This is one of the better 'Now!' disc's and is sure to please.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch(next to 17, of course).......2006-02-18

I will review each song and give it a mark:

1. U2: Vertigo-I love this song. Great guitars and, as usual, Bono's vocals are top notch! Rating: A

2. Gwen Stefani: What You Waiting For?-An OK song. It could have easily been better, though. Rating: B+

3. Lindsay Lohan: Rumors-I don't much care for this actress/singer approach, but this is an OK song. Rating: B

4. Snoop Dogg: Drop It Like It's Hot-I love this song. I one day hope to beatbox like the guy on this song. Rating: A

5. Destiny's Child: Soldier-Face it. You guys are finished. Forget about singing. Rating: C-

6. Ashanti: Only U-This is a good song with a danceable beat. Rating: B+

7. Chingy: Balla Baby-This song is better than some of his other work, but I still don't prefer his music. Rating: B-

8. John Legend: Used To Love U-This is a good song. "Holla, holla, holla, holla". Rating: B

9. Nelly: Over & Over-I like this song. It's not GREAT, but it's an OK song. Rating: A-

10. Frankie J: Obsession-I don't much care for Frankie J. This is no exception. Rating: C-

11. Omarion: O-Too ballad-y, but that's the approach he was going for. Rating: C

12. Howie Day: Collide-An OK song, I guess. Don't have much to say about it. Rating: B

13. Hoobastank: Disappear-Yeah! This is waaay better than "The Reason". Rating: A-

14. Chevelle: Vitamin R-I love Chevelle! Rating: A

15. Three Days Grace: Home-See note on Chevelle. Rating: A

16. Lenny Kravitz: Lady-Good 'ol fashioned rock 'n' roll for the new generation. Rating: A

17. Good Charlotte: I Just Wanna Live-I love this song. Killer guitars and a great chorus. Rating: A+

18. Frickin' A: Jessie's Girl-Rockier than the original, but it's not great, it's just good. Rating: B

19. Skye Sweetnam: Tangled Up In Me-An OK song I suppose, but she tries too hard to be considered "rock"("Billy S."? Please!) Rating: B

20. Keith Urban: You're My Better Half-I hate country. Rating: D

4 out of 5 stars now 19.......2005-07-12

Ok, ok, I know that this is supposed to be a review for Now 18, but I can't review for Now 19 anywhere else. The music on Now 19 is much more updated, with hits like "Hollaback Girl" and "Baby I'm Back." But it's still a little outdated with "Mockingbird." It should have been "A** Like That." And "Somebody Told Me" instead of "Mr. Brightside." Overall, I think this Now CD is much more updated than previous ones.

Sara Evans's 1997 debut, Three Chords and the Truth, seemed, on first hearing, impossible. Here was a major-label Nashville album that, once again, faithfully captured the heartbreaking simplicity of classic country; here was a singer who could belt out with raw nerve and then slip low into deep smokiness. Evans's RCA follow-up is nearly as good, even as it leaves that hard country sound for a more radio-friendly, rocking edge. Billy Sherrill handles the recording, and though there's a luxurious quality to the layers of guitars and vocal harmonies, the standouts "Crying Game" and "Great Unknown" sound more like driving Americana rock than Top 40 country-pop. The real attraction, however, is Evans's fluid songwriting and expressive voice: whether she's singing beside George Jones, Vince Gill, or Alison Krauss, Evans's true, warm tone is, on the mainstream country scene, an emotional world apart. --Roy Kasten

Born to Fly is less traditional than Sara's debut "Three Cords and Truth" but certainly still a country album. Her voice remains awesome. Here are good songs:

Great Unknown - uptempo tune about getting away with lover and throwing selves on fate

Crying Game - great tune, best on here

Fool I'm a Woman

Love Don't Be a Stranger - done by other singers, Sara's is best.

Cupid

5 out of 5 stars More Sara Evans.......2007-05-16

This was more pop than her first album, you could really see a development of her own style that she created on this album

3 out of 5 stars A real country album..........2007-04-26

Sara sounds great on this second album. It's very country, like her first, one "Three Chords and the Truth". However it is not one of my favourite albums from her, while it does have some wonderful songs on it. A must-have for traditonal country fans, and any Sara fans.

Choice tracks:

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!.......2006-03-27

After buying and enjoying Sara's two latest cds and seeing her in concert, I decided to get her first three. This is the first one I've listened to so far. And I love it!
Here's my rating on each song, on a scale of 1 to 10...
1. The Great Unknown - Great catchy tune. Really sets the mood for the rest of the album. 10/10
2. Cryin' Game - I know this was a single, but I'd never heard it til she sang it in concert. Definitely one of my favorite songs on the album. 10/10
3. No Place That Far - This was the first song I ever heard from Sara, and it still gets to me like it did then. 10/10
4. I Thought I'd See Your Face Again - This song reminds me of Patty Loveless. Could have been her song, but I'm glad Sara did it. 8/10
5. Fool, I'm A Woman - Love this song! Very clever and catchy. Can't go wrong with this one. 10/10
6. Time Won't Tell - A nice ballad. Not my favorite track, but it's a good one. 7/10
7. Knot Comes Untied - A bit rougher ballad. This one fits Sara better than the previous one. I like this one a lot. 9/10
9. These Days - Some nice harmonies on this one, but not the best song. Almost on the boring side, but not quite. 6/10
10. Cupid - Great fun, catchy song. I'm surprised I haven't heard this one before. 9/10
11. There's Only One - A country-gospel song. My least favorite on the album. Didn't do much for me, but not a bad song. 5/10
This is one of those albums I can let repeat after it's over because I'll definitely want to hear at least some of the tracks again. Can't wait to listen to some more Sara!

3 out of 5 stars Just another CD in my collection..........2005-12-09

For me this was just another one of those CDs that I listen to a few times when I first get it, then play only the singles until finally it sits in my CD tower to be for the most part forgotten! Nothing on this album was really "I love it" material for me. Nothing that called me back to listen to it over and over again. I think Restless is her best album so far (although I have not yet bought the newest release).
