There's no shortage of irony in film composer James Horner's cinematic triumphs with oceanborne disaster. Titanic, of course, became one of the most mega-successful orchestral soundtracks in history. While The Perfect Storm may not scale those commercial heights, it's a worthy, if differently nuanced, companion piece. With his score revolving around a rolling, six-note motif that perfectly evokes the waves of the North Atlantic, Horner colors the tale of the doomed fishing trawler Andrea Gail and her crew with a dramatic restraint that often brings to mind the best work of John Williams and John Barry. Horner's score builds on a dramatic tension between the brass and the strings (and even an apropos metal-guitar lick or two), before climaxing in a pair of lengthy cue-suites ("Coast Guard Rescues" and "The Rogue Wave") that masterfully conjure menace and pure terror from a skillful alchemy of challenging tonality and orchestral color. And, of course, there's a marketing-driven, tacked-on pop song, "Yours Forever," a collaboration between John Mellencamp and Horner (built around the same six-note motif) that's solid if not spectacular; Mellencamp delivers it well and survives with his dignity intact. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Horner's best score the best part of a bad movie........2007-02-14

IMHO, this is James Horner's best score by far. Its filled with gorgeous melodies, brilliant orchestrations, exciting uses of percussion and unusual mixes of instruments. (Where else have you heard full symphony orchestra with electric guitar and a prominent celtic drum? Amazingly, all these work together beautifully when featured together in two of the tracks.) The wonderful melodies flow from the orchestra in quick succession, changing from one melody to another seamlessly - the mark of a true genius composer. This is not a non-stop exercise in 'pretty-pretty' music, like so many of Horner's music. This score bursts with excitement, action and bravado. And unlike Titanic, the synthesizer is almost non-existent.

I listened to this score today for the first time in several months, and it brought tears to my eyes in a few moments and I got shivers down my spine for most of the CD. Yep, for me its that good.

What a pity that James Horner's most recent works have not been anywhere near as good as this one. He seems to concentrate on 'pretty music' these days; music that is easily digested with a first listening, then forgotten about once you have learnt the score. This magnificent score, on the other hand, is in one section moving and glorious, then the next moment dramatic and all mayhem.

The Perfect Storm could possibly stand as the peak of James Horner's creative achievement. What a pity such effort went into the music for a movie that was such rubbish.

4 out of 5 stars Adventure without pretense.......2006-10-12

This is needed in any James Horner enthusiast's collection. Horner is definitely one of my favorite musical 'artists' of the 20th century, no question, and though I've been fairly apathetic of late getting familiar with all of his individual works, 'The Perfect Storm' is one of the last that I took fully to heart.

Here's the gist of it: Horner creates a wonderful sense of Americana with a classy theme, but the album -- pounds -- it over your head for the first half an hour. Literally, crushes, to the point of suffocation; little variation or dynamic, utterly monotonous, and, in the end, a warm and dreadful experience.

Midway through track four, though, Horner's already demonstrated (a million times over) ability to write bracing themes and motifs for vivacious situations shines through. The orchestrations nor the performances within the ensemble might not be able to compare to some of his earlier, more inspired work ('The Rocketeer'; Don Bluth's animated 'An American Tail('s) and 'The Land Before Time'), but the bottom line is that he writes such elaborate, exciting music with amazing drive and passion, melody and a captivating sense of drama. He is a composer, especially this day in an age when, if asked to, how many composers could truly write a symphony if asked to? Half of Horner's scores could be described as such, and that's one reason I consider him one of my most treasured musical talents I've ever come across. This music could have been written without any subsidiary motion picture, and the (melo)dramatic emphasis on the particular subject and themes found here would be expressed with ease.

So basically, if you've heard and taken to some of Horner's intense scores within the genre ('action' is such a vague term), don't go without this score, even if it never really garnished much attention (and was lambasted by critics for its place within the film). Swirling strings, momentous brass, stirring bells... Work with it rationally, in this order; tracks 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and you're in for a pretty enthralling ride. And, if you want to hear how brilliant this man truly is at exposing the reality of Human emotions, just listen to 'Rogue Wave', meditating on the underlying text: the crew's final, desperate attempt to override the death-bringing wave of the storm; then, -- near 2:35 -- the unbelievably HEAVY understanding that Life, as they are soon to know, is over. It's done.; lastly, the gooey, romantic gates of acceptance open for those left (this one could have been done without, but it's still lyrical and, damn if I'll resist its sentiment, lovely.

Horner is a genius.

4 out of 5 stars One of Horner's Best!!.......2005-09-15

'The Perfect Storm' is what I consider one of James Horner's best. He has the talent of expressing the emotions that is portrayed in the film through his music. The first track on this CD is a perfect example(no pun intended). Listening to it, I can see fishing boats pulling into and out of the harbor. I've lived by the ocean and James captured the feeling beautifully.
This is a must-get soundtrack. The whole CD contains beautiful and brilliant music that will just captivate your mind.

1 out of 5 stars We have been conditioned to accept this kind of crap .......2004-12-06

I saw Perfect Storm for the first (and last) time last night. As I listened, all I could imagine was that some cousin of the director did the music. I eventually turned the movie off before I found out who the composer was. But my curiosity got the best of me today, and I was in shock to find out that I had been listening to James Horner...or at least that's what the credits tell me.
The truth is probably a bit different though; I would bet that a good share of this score was phoned in and susequently fleshed out by underlings while Mr. Horner focused on one of the other 10 films he was working on.
Hollywood has encouraged this kind of schlock filler music for so long that it sounds like it's good, only because that's what we're used to. Kinda like thinking that Starbucks is good coffee.
Mr. Horner is a talented composer, he's proven that. But he probably watched the dailies of this testament to overblown Hollywood values and punted the ball to someone below him...like his COUSIN!
Embarassingly bad music, but perfect for this film!

4 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect Listening.......2007-06-08

Another wonderful offering from Edie Brickell. If you're a fan, you'll want to enjoy it often. She never fails to please. And it's always a pleasure to have the bonus of Paul Simon along for a part of the ride.

5 out of 5 stars A Comforting Voice.......2007-03-20

If you've ever heard a song by Edie Brickell then you know how comforting her voice is. This is one of HER best CDs. My favorite song is "Green" - each song has a story to tell and will make you smile. It's a great cd to listen to as you relax or even lay on the beach. Make sure to add this cd to your collection!

4 out of 5 stars When Smokey Sings..........2006-01-07

I have listened to the song "Good Times" a million times, and I can't stop thinking it's Smokey Robinson. Listen to the long "goodbye" as she sings "I don't wanna say goodbye", and the way she sings the word "little" in "I want a little more".

But, as I say, I have listened to it a million times. The whole album is good, but this one song is worth the price of entry.

4 out of 5 stars The lady with the great voice continues to dazzle.......2005-11-21

Edie Brickell has a voice that is hard to describe. It can be cutting an edgy at times, but here on this record its soothing and seems to gel perfectly with the music in each of the songs. While this alblum may lack a # 1 smash single, it is a very likeable record with nearly all of the songs being quite easy to listen to. Starting with the jump start of "Tommorrow Comes" and ending with the playful "Lost in the Moment" this record continues to showcase Brickell as a steady force in women's pop rock. Hard Times, Green, and When the Lights Go Down are just a few of the fine tracks here. A record you can enjoy listening to multiple times with ease..without having to constantly press skip on your disc changer!

4 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect Imagery.......2005-01-25

Edie Brickell has proven she can combine the prosaic with the inspirational, and make rejuvenating even the most haunting lyrics. Her voice is wonderful and her intuition with lyrics is subtly brilliant. A very relaxing CD, but one that makes you listen carefully more than once.

4 out of 5 stars Over all great score........2006-10-23

I've been a fan of Harry Gregson-Williams for quite some time (and to a lesser extent, John Powell). Gregson-Williams is known for working with Hans Zimmer (they worked together on the soundtrack for The Rock) and he is also known in the video gaming community for his work on the Metal Gear Solid franchise (his take on the theme, not originally composed by him, is absolutely breathtaking in both the second and third games).

So it was no shock to me that I absolutely adore his work on the Shrek franchise. I can't say much here that hasn't been said by other reviewers, but I will say that the strongest work on the soundtrack involves the more serious, epic pieces (of which there are far too few).

Stand out tracks, for me, are "Fairytale", "Escape the Dragon", "Ride the Dragon", "I Object", and "Transformation/End".

The action theme of the film is used perfectly throughout the film, but it shows up far too rarely on the disc. I'm not sure if it's actually present less, or if it was a less-is-more kind of thing when it did play in the film. Regardless, it's a beautiful composition (though it does remind me of the "hero" theme from Deep Blue Sea).

You can feel Gregson-Williams' influence on "Escape the Dragon", as there are similar pulsing electric beats that are reminiscent, to me, of his arrangement of the Metal Gear Solid 2 main theme (which to this day remains one of my favorite pieces of soundtrack music ever - it's exciting, it's patriotic, it's epic. What more does one need?)

There's also some beautiful solo guitar work on this score that's a bit reminiscent of Trevor Rabin, but excellent regardless. My only gripe is that the disc feels a bit short in running length, but I think that's because a portion of the soundtrack was dedicated to pop and rock tracks, which show up on the second album.

If you're a fan of Gregson-Williams, Powell, or just film music in general, I strongly recommend picking this disc up. It'll make you sad and it'll get your blood racing.

5 out of 5 stars Completely surprising.......2006-05-24

Harry Gregson-Williams is a fairly new composer, but despite that, he is beyond comparison. (Except for John Williams and Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer). This is supposed to be an animated film, where music doesn't matter AS much. But this composer goes beyond all expectations, putting forth all his best efforts, bringing out the best in Shrek. You can hear some links from this CD to the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Harry's later work. Even by listening to the samples you can tell this music is hard to beat. I don't think Shrek would have won Best Animated Film if Gregson-Williams had not composed the music. BUY THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best animated film music ever!.......2004-03-19

Although the other reviewers are right in that there isnt a lot of music on this disc, a little over 40 minutes, it's worth the price just for the first and 25th tracks. There are so many awe inspiring tracks on this cd it's impossible to pass up. The disc opens up with a very serious and magical theme on the strings and oboe. This theme is the same one that the princess sings in her fatal duet with the bird, that track is on here too. Also, there's the memorable Welcome to Duloc theme with the child choir. Also, the fight with Robin Hood theme with some riverdance in it is on this disc. The best theme on the disc is first introduced in the escape from the dragon track, with a funky beat behind it. It's presented in it's full orchestra and choral glory in the Ride the Dragon track which is guaranteed to give you goose bumps. All in all this is a very wide ranging score with some of the most light-hearted/goofy music ever along with some of the most inspired and passionate heroic music. I can't recommend this soundtrack enough. The music of Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell added so much to Shrek, making it the best animated film I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad to have it!.......2003-01-12

I'm so glad I got this score. Such a humorous film like Shrek doesn't sound like it would have so much beautiful music, but this score proves it does. The music is absolutely stunning, sometimes powerful, sometimes scary, sometimes sad and sometimes just beautiful. There are a few recurring themes, but they are great themes and sound nice in every song. Although most of the soundtrack is pretty serious, there are a few funny songs placed in, which only add to it's greatness. If, while watching Shrek, you happened to notice some of the nice themes like I did, then I suggest getting this score. It really is a great CD and I'm happy to have this part of my collection.

3 out of 5 stars didn't get enough time???.......2002-12-21

This is the third score that Harry Gregson Williams and John Powell composed together and after buying "Antz" and "Chicken Run" I had high expectations. Unfortunately this score is by far not as good as their previous ones. Still good though, but especially less comfortable to listen to. Most songs are just too short. By the time the theme had captured you the song is over. Strongest part of this album is the humor Powell and Williams have used. Some endings of songs are quite "unusual", like "farquaad's speech" and "merry men", which can crack me up if I'm in a funny mood. Strongest tracks on the album are "escape from the dragon" and "fairytale". The rest of the album kinda sounds as if the composers didn't get enough time to compose the music, so they just put the pieces they already had behind each other. Too bad, because this is a duo that has a lot to offer and hopefully they will soon again, with less, but much longer tracks.

4 out of 5 stars A techno soundtrack that many should hear.......2004-08-25

I still have yet to see the movie, but have heard the music now, and I can say I am pleased. Disc 1 starts off well with the first 2 tracks, then it thins out with stuff from Fatboy Slim and Elton John, which made the first half of disc one bad. Then the title song "One Perfect Day" comes in and lights everything up again as a magical rock song. QOTSA song "No one knows" I don't care for at all, but the U.N.K.L.E remix made the song sound so dark and great. Underworld's Two Months Off was shortened but that's alright, I don't mind, and then an interesting track from a group called Futureshock comes with the track "Late at night" which was great. The version of Ordinary World on this was great as well, after that the rest of disc one isn't too listenable.

Disc 2 moved quite well and mixed track into track unexpectedly in a nice way. Once we came to Orbital's last epic "One Perfect Sunrise" things started closing down, I wish this version was a bit longer for an edit, but it was good none the less. Paul Van Dyk's "epic" dance mix of the title track had me with high expectations...the beat started out great, but then the vocals kicked in and it started to suck. The vocals for this were not mixed in well at all, and I was quite dissapointed with PVD on this, and the way the song ended didn't sound like it was in the trailer, it just did a couple of symbol smashes and a dust out...that's not what I was looking for. Then the cd ended with the scores from David Hobson which I didn't care for...the cd loses a star for a poor outing in disc one and a bad remix by PVD, that got me down, but none the less if you are a major listener of music and love electronic, dance and wanna hear groups from the other side of the globe by all means go for it, but I warn you, it is expensive so be sure about your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars One Perfect Soundtrack.......2004-03-11

The new Aussie film "One Perfect Day" is about love, death, drug, but mostly, it's about music. This two-disc album, featuring songs and music adapted&made for the film, is as spectacular as the film itself. Take a look at the soundtrack's list of artists: it is an international gathering of names and talents. Of the various genres integrated into one work, you will find contemporary music in all kinds of forms and sounds: beating trance, dance techno, tribal groove, classical and electronic - all sensationally entwined to underscore the drama.

Disc One features mostly songs, including the up-tempo dance tunes from Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, Underworld; mesmerizing Sandrine and The Cardigans in soft percussions; and fresh-voiced Lydia Denker in the uplifting, ear-catching title song "One Perfect Day". Concluding Disc One is the OPD remix of Rob Dougan's "One And The Same" in a bold and unique blend of Rob Dougan's rasp vocal and anthemic orchestral accompaniment. Disc Two focuses mainly on instrumental pieces, starting with floor-banging dance techno, alternated with tinge of sentimentality from vocal pieces of Lamb in "Gorecki" and Grandadbob in "Just Show Me", also Lisa Gerrard in a dreamy aura of the two made-for-film tracks from Orbital and David Hobson, along with Paul Van Dyk remix of the title song featuring Ali McGregor. The whole album is then finished on well-composed classical instrumentals from David Hobson.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect rocks!.......2003-12-14

Why isn't this girl a household name? She can sing soooooo good. I love all her songs. The original version and remixes of Picture Perfect are just so good! There's one really good remix called Sundafu's Boy Wonder Remix. It's sort of slow...very RnB like. You won't regret buying this CD! I mean it! :D

5 out of 5 stars as good as any of them.......2002-04-17

Rich Mullins' music grew out of a heart that earnestly sought to be God's. Rich saw them largely as Christian entertainment. Yet as Jesus said, we know a tree by its fruit--and much fruit has come from the music of this remarkable man. Never Picture Perfect contains some of Rich's greatest songs. "First Family" was a song Rich wrote for his Mom and Dad on their anniversary. If it does not move you, nothing will. "The Love of God" is possibly the greatest song Rich ever wrote. "Somewhere" and "Bound to Come Some Trouble" are also up there in the pantheon of Rich's songs. Rich Mullins made some remarkable CDs in his time. Never Picture Perfect is as good as any of them. The greatest thing I can think to say about Rich or this disc is that he, like his parents, "worked to give faith hands and feet--and somehow gave it wings."

5 out of 5 stars The Love of God.......2001-01-19

"Somewhere amidst these ins and these outs, there's a fine line of purpose I follow even now. Through the haze of despair that confuses and hurts us I look to see that You're there; and I run toward Your light "... Rich Mullins sings these lines on the song "Somewhere," which is the tenth track on this remarkable recording. Each song on this disc expresses some aspect of God's light shining down upon us in our everyday lives.

I'll be right up front and tell you that I love all of Rich Mullins' CDs. He is my favorite singer/songwriter type of guy. Now that we've established that fact, let me tell you why you should get a copy of this album...

The songs. Never Picture Perfect is FILLED with good songs. From the opening rendition of the hymn "I Will Sing" to the reprise of "Love the of God" Each of these songs are individually worthy of multiple-nay, repeated listenings (although "The Book of Love" really, really, doesn't fit in sonically). Besides the afore mentioned "Somewhere," three songs really strike me as being particularly great.

The first is "Hope to Carry On." It describes the change that the Love of God brings about in the world. As Rich says in the song: "Love could make a beggar rich, He could set a prisoner free. I know He could do it for you-God knows He did it for me." The most moving part of the song for me is when Rich talks about love causing Peter to put away his sword. This strikes a cord in my life because I am the kind of person who is all too often ready to go to war over every little thing...Yet Jesus has called us to something much higher. Or, as Rich so skillfully notes: "Love has come-and He's given me hope to carry on."

The second song that blows me away is "First Family." It is awesome just from the standpoint of being a nearly perfectly written song. It is a song about Rich's own family that he wrote for his Mom and Dad's anniversary. It has caused me to take personal stock of the family God has blessed me with.

My favorite song on "Never Picture Perfect" is "The Love of God." It is truly a GREAT song. I give this CD my highest recommendation-and leave you with the words of the last verse of "The Love of God"--may they take root in your soul:

"Joy and sorrow are this ocean and in their every ebb and flow-now the Lord a door has opened that all Hell could never close. Here I'm tested and made worthy, tossed about but lifted up in the reckless raging fury that they call the love of God."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent, powerful poetry.......2000-08-24

I have every one of his albums, I admit. But if you can only buy one or two, you should probably start with this one. The songs are so powerful and true.

This is the album that has meant the most to me out of all of them...I made it through some difficult times singing in tears to, "Bound to Come Some Trouble." "Hope to Carry On" still picks me up everytime I listen. This music has a way of touching you where you hurt and helping you heal. I don't know of another artist who does this without resorting to cliches or sickening sweetness. These songs remind me of God's love and truth that will always sustain.

What means a lot to me is that Rich didn't cover up poor musical abilities with "God-lyrics." He combined amazing talent and skill with powerful poetry and gave us beauty.

    5 out of 5 stars Rich Mullin's Masterpiece.......1999-04-21

Nowhere in his legacy is there a more perfect example of the humility and power of Rich Mullin's songwriting. The subjects range from simple family life to larger issues of politics and war. Rich never fell into the trap being too dogmatic though...even when he takes on the world's governments in "While The Nations Rage" or when he lays bare his own and our shortcomings in "My One Thing."

Beautifully produced by Reed Arvin, this CD is akin to having a modern day book of Proverbs to pop in the player and listen to the wisdom of a man who loved God.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly Good!.......1999-03-16

I've found in the world of "Christian" music that people tend to "strain at gnats and swallow camels". There is nothing on this disc that I can't very highly recommend but I think my absolute favorite is "Higher Education and the Book of Love". This song is pure genius. It's scary kind of modular "Star Trek" oration that begins with a "what does it mean to be human?" This piece in and of itself is more than worth the price.

For those who love Mullins music, this is a MUST add. This is as fine a collection of music as any Master ever put together and Mullins was a Master Musician.

The students I work with love it! It is ageless and timeless, like the man himself. Breathtakingly good!

5 out of 5 stars The absolute BEST song Ever!!!.......2001-02-09

I first heard this song on my computer radio. When the name came up (Angela Via - Picture Perfect) I thought "oh, great, another Britney..." but I was wrong! Angela Via is a great singer with a great voice who can Really Sing! When the song started, I almost skipped it, but I stopped myself after a few notes. I really liked it! So I turned the sound way up and listened. When it was over, I was dissappointed that it didn't last longer. So I made up my mind to buy the single, and I must say, I am not dissappointed with the single. It's soooo good. If you think Anglea is anything like Britney, think again. She's sooooooooooooooooo much better!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars She is an amazing singer.......2000-12-31

Angela Via is a hip new artist with a great voice. You know how Mariah Carey goes on high notes?? Angela does it even better. I can't to see her grow up to be famous. So, if you like Mariah Carey you will LOVE Angela. I hope you like the cd! I recommend this to anyone who likes Mariah Carey. See ya!

5 out of 5 stars The Angela Via Remixes are "Picture Perfect".......2000-12-08

Angela Via is a new artist and it's great that she understands how much her fans like remixes. I am the biggest remix freak, so when I see them I take advantage a get them. There are 7 remixes on this single, one for every one's taste. The remixes really made me like Angela Via even more, I can't wait for her debut album, but for now enjoy the remixes.

    Track Listing:

1.) Album Version (3:27) = This is the video version and the one that is played on the radio. The has the spanish lyric at the begining.

2.) Jack D. Elliot Radio Mix (4:01) = This track is like that of a crazy club mix except it is not one of those tacky 10 min club mixes, it is a radio edit, which I must say is great and uptempo. So sad, they took the spanish lyric out of this one!

3.) Jack D. Elliot Club Mix (7:31) = Now this remix is one of those long club mixes, but it is so great I have not one complaint about it being long. They took out the spanish lyric out of this one, so I was a bit sad. but this one is a total club mix, you can tell by just the beat. So this remix is for all you club folks

4.) Eddie's Perfect Dance Mix (Extended) (6.20) = Now this track is great, it has some latin beat to it but it says mostly on the dance/club beat of side. The begining starts out kind of cheap, but than it get all good, and you figure out why this remixes is extended and you just want more. This remix is deprived of the spanish lyric as well, but its all good.

5.) Eddie's Crossover/ Rhythm Mix (3:54) = Your probably thinking since this remix is made by the same person as that of track 4 that this remix will be similar to that remix. Well this remix is completely different, it has somewhat of a disco beat to it and they slowed down Angela's voice. Once again this remix is missing the spanish lyric, but it the beat is to disco for it any way, but its a really good remix.

6.) Sundafu's "Boy Wonder" Mix (3:41) = This remix is by far my favorite, all because Angela Via recorded this song over just to make this remix. When an artist goes out of their way to record a song over again just for somthing as simple as a remix to please their fans, that is worth a whole 5 stars. This remix is very much R&B, and Angela Via voice sound's so urban, that you would never guess she was latin. All the remixes on this CD are great, but if this single had just this remix on it, I would pay for just this one. This remix has the spanish lyric on it, and even that was recorded over again.

7.) The Flamingo Remix (3:28) = This is probably the only somewhat latin sounding remix on here, but it sounds great. They also slowed down Angela's voice for this remix to, however, it is also featuring the spanish lyric.

Angela Via is a great singer and as long as she keeps up with the remixes that she'll make it in the business. This single is worth so much more than what it is priced, so get it, because it is worth the money. If you don't get this single it isn't my lose it is your my friend, if only you knew what you were missing out on, so go buy this single.

5 out of 5 stars Angela Via is the next Selena!.......2000-04-06

Angela Via is an excellent new singer whose vocal talents areawesome. Especially in this great song "Picture Perfect" If you love pop music or if you want to see another rising pop star that does not have blonde hair, then this is the girl for you. This isn't Angela Via's first appearance in the music bizz. If you own the pokemon soundtrack you'll notice that she has a song there called "Catch Me If You Can" which she wrote. Angela Via will definitely be the next Latin Super Star. So support her in buying this awesome CD-SINGLE. Also if you like Spanish music, Angela has also recorded this song in Spanish. It's called 'Retrato Perfecto'

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Song.......2000-04-05

If you like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and/or Mariah Carey, you will definately like this song "picture perfect". The 1st time I heard it I actually thought it was Christina or Britney. It's an upbeat song. I absolutely love it! Hmm...she(meaning angela) was just on Rosie the 3rd of April. I mean this will probably be a TRL #1 as soon as there is a video out. You HAVE TO BUY THIS CD! bye!
